1 Check out e website! April, 2016 Congratulations! We had seven Kansas Award Portfolios sent on to ate competition. Congrats to BreAnn Anshutz, Kayleigh Bitter, Kaerine Hicks, and Payton Mauler for working on e KAP and a 5-minute video! The written KAP and a video presentation about e project were viewed by judges in different parts of e ate. We do have a ate winner and more information will be available soon! We also have some ate scholarship winners in Barton County! If you would like to learn more about reporting your project work on e KAP, plan to attend e training on Monday, April 18 at 7 pm at e Extension Office. RSVP s by noon on at day would be greatly appreciated! Heading to State - April 23 rd Congrats to our air rifle members who have qualified for State Competition. Alivia Bautia, Will Clark, Dalton Dicks, Parker Dicks, Collin and Evan Hammond, Ryan Kohman, Lake Lyman, Katelyn Reh, Parker Smi, Jace Schwager, and Caleb Straub will be representing Barton County. Thank you to our shooting sports leaders for spending time wi our project members - your work and encouragement is so appreciated. Congrats to our Regional 4-H Day participants! Barton County was well represented at Regional 4-H day on March 11 here in Great Bend. Results were poed on Facebook in Barton County 4-H members group and e scored sheets are in e office. Thank you to Kaerine Hicks for helping monitor e model meeting room door. The public speaking and presentation skills learned in 4-H will be used roughout your life. Thanks Brenda Office Professional s Day is April 27. Be sure to say THANK YOU to our office professional, Brenda Walton, for all she does for e Barton County 4-H program. Project Changes due May 1 May 1 is a very important deadline! To exhibit in e 4-H division at e County Fair, you mu be enrolled in e project you are exhibiting in. Dropping & adding projects needs to be completed by May 1. A 24-hour grace period is allowed. So e absolute, no exceptions, deadline for project nd enrollment is May 2 by 5 p.m. Project changes need to be completed by you in 4H Online. Kansas 4-H Online is at Call e Extension Office at or Brenda at bwalton@ksu.edu if you need assiance. Kitchen Concoctions Sign up for is fun SPIN club to be held on Thursdays, April 14 rough May 19 from 3:30-4:45 pm at e Extension Office. We will share recipes and directions for fun and inexpensive ings to experiment and try in your kitchen. Many of e experiments will be non-edible but at e end of e program, we will share food and baking experiments at you will love to eat! Please sign up by Tuesday April 12. The funds for is program will be rough e 4-H Expansion Grant. Junior Leader assiance is always welcome! Dairy Goat and Rabbit meetings Kaerine Hicks will hold a dairy goat meeting on Saturday, April 9 at 6:30 pm at eir farm. Address is 451 NW 70 Ave. Bring a clean glass pint size jar wi well fitting lid if you want to take milk home wi you Rabbit Project Meeting Sunday, April 10, 4:30 at e 4-H Educational Building. Breeds of rabbits will be discussed. You are invited even if you are not in e project.

2 4-H Discovery Days Discovery Days is a excellent opportunity to try out a mini-college experience. This event is May 31 - June 3 on KSU campus in Manhattan. It is open to all you years old by Jan. 1, In addition to e classes and tours about 4-H projects, careers or hobbies, ere are fun evening activities. Regier online at by April 29. Classes are filling fa, so check out e information online very soon. Campference - What is it? This event is for you, ages and is June at Rock Springs Ranch. Participants will experience e feel of a conference while enjoying some of e camp activities at RSR has to offer. Check out for specific information. A limited number of campers will be accepted for Campference, so when at limit is reached, regiration is closed. Co is $270. Heart of Kansas 4-H Camp Join us for 4-H Camp at Rock Springs Ranch June 8-11, A camp regiration form is included in is newsletter and is on our website The deadline for camp regiration is May 1 (24 hour grace period allowed, so e very late regirations will be nd accepted is May 2 ). Co is $175. Those attending mu sell 10 BBQ tickets to help pay for e bus to camp. Wanted: Camp Counselors If you are 15 years old or older we need you! Camp is June 8-11 and counselors would need to attend training at RSR on June 7. A camp counselor application is poed at our Barton county website Application is due May 1. You mu also have your Volunteer Service Application completed and bo background checks complete by June 1. Kansas Range You Camp If you are intereed in plants, liveock, or wildlife, you should consider attending is camp on July at Camp Mennoscah near Murdock, KS. High school udents should contact eir local Conservation Dirict office for possible financial assiance by May 1. Barton County H.O.T. Class (Tractor Safety) Barton Co. Hazardous Occupations Training (also known as Tractor Safety) will be held on Thursday, April 28 and Saturday, April 30. The Thursday evening class is from 6:00-8:30 pm at Straub International and Saturday e class is from 8 am - 5 pm at Barton Community College. $15 charge for e class for a workbook. Lunch and snacks are provided. Put is date on your calendar. Regiration is due April 21. If you age are planning to do farm work for someone oer an eir parents per e Dept. of Labor requirements, ey mu take a tractor safety course. The class is open to anyone years of age. State Sewing Camp During Discovery Days Come join us for e 5 annual State 4-H Sewing Camp! It will be held on e K-State Campus in Manhattan. This year s Specialty Camp is designed for you at have maered basic sewing skills and are ready to challenge emselves to learn new and more advanced skills. The camp offers 4-H members and eir friends an opportunity to learn and build confidence in e Cloing and Textiles project. Participants should all know e basics wi pattern layout/cutting and basic sewing machine operation. Participants will choose eir project when ey arrive on campus. More info on e ate 4-H website Dog Meetings Remember at members mu attend a minimum of 8 meetings to be eligible to exhibit in e 4-H dog show at e Barton County Fair. This is necessary to have your dog ready for e show at e fair. There will be meetings on Sundays at 2:00 pm and on Monday at 6 pm. If you are enrolled in e project and ill want to show at e fair, you mu attend nearly all e meetings. As in e pa, if ere are tornado warnings or severe lightning, e meetings will not be held. 3 National Volunteer Week April Have you said ank you to your 4-H leaders lately? If not, please take e time is mon to let em know how much you appreciate em! We have some wonderful volunteers in Barton County and e 4-H program would ju not happen wiout em sharing eir time and talent. We do need all community leaders and all ose working wi you to enroll as a leader at Kansas 4-H online and complete e volunteer screening process. Call if you need assiance 4-H Council Meeting discussed T-shirts for 2016 The 4-H Council met March 21. The eme submitted by e t-shirt committee was If life is a highway, en 4-H is where you learn to drive. The shirts will be charcoal grey and e printing will be white and green. The bids will be in soon and e price will be announced but e price has been in e $6-$7 range for you and adult S to XL. Larger sizes have an added charge. If you are NOT at your April club meeting it would be YOUR responsibility to contact your community leader (or e person from e club taking orders) to order a t-shirt. Your T-shirt will need to be picked up from your club contact. The next 4-H Council meeting will be held Monday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. at e 4-H Building. If you cannot attend, PLEASE contact your club s alternate council representative. We have a few members who have not attended any of e fir ree members. Please take eps to get to e May and Augu meeting. If you are an alternate council member and are asked to attend, please fulfill your duties. BBQ committee will meet at 6:45 pm to make plans for e Ticket selling blitz on Saturday, June 18. Tickets should be available by May 1. Can I join 4-H now? As you know, December 1 is e deadline for all returning 4-H members to re-enroll and March 1 is e deadline to get new members enrolled. By now, e 4-H year is half over and ere have been lots of club and county activities. We underand at some families may not be aware of e deadlines set (e fir year ey join). So, we are doing our be to accommodate everyone and at is time, if a member enrolls after e deadline, e 4-H member and a parent will be asked to sign a second chance form at verifies at yes, I know is is after e deadline and next year I will not have is second chance opportunity. MAY 1 is a drop/add deadline for all project changes. Sewing Dates Second Saturday Sewing will meet on April 9 from 9:30-11 am. They are tasked wi taking care of and making decisions about e buildings and e 4-H grounds between Great Bend and Hoisington. 4-H Council pays $2500 each year to have use of e building roughout e year. To use e building for 4-H purposes your club or project group mu ill contact e Extension office to put your date on e calendar. There may be times at e building will be rented and because we need e rent money to pay e bills we may ask a 4-H group to change eir location, etc, but normally 4-H has priority. 4-H is also responsible for eir own clean up ju are ose who rent it. All families involved in e activity or e club mu help clean up.

4 Liveock and Ag Important Date - May 7 Market Animal Weigh-in As ated in e fair book, all market animals to be shown at e Barton County Fair in e 4-H classes mu be identified and weighed in on or before e Official Weigh Date. Not reading e newsletter or not getting your animals on time is not an acceptable excuse. The date for tagging and weighing in sheep and meat goats is Saturday, May 7 from 8-9:00 am at e 4-H grounds nor of Great Bend. Even if you are going to be out of town at day, you mu make arrangements to have e animals eartagged on or before May 7. Market hogs mu be identified and can be eartagged on e trailer. Contact Alicia about getting your pigs eartagged by May 7. If you are not enrolled you mu get e project added to your enrollment by May 1 at 4-H Online. Market Liveock Sale Guidelines In order to sell rough e Sale of Champions at e Barton County fair, e 4-H member mu: Attend a liveock quality assurance training annually or pass e written PQA te. Attend a minimum of five 4-H club meetings during e year. Turn in a medication form at includes e eartag number of e animal and a complete li of all medications at have been used since e animal was purchased. The form is to be turned in at e fair weigh-in or when e Intent-to-Sell card is turned in. Deliver BBQ tickets to previous liveock buyers before e scheduled date. Show your animal AND walk your animal rough e ring at e Sale of Champions All Liveock Projects mu be in your sole ownership by May 1, 2016 for you to be eligible to exhibit at e county fair, ate fair, & oer shows. Some shows will require regiration papers on regiered animals & ey mu be in e name of e 4- H member. Dates for Spring Shows We are conantly receiving flyers from across e ate about spring shows for liveock. IF you would like ose forwarded to you by , please bunruh@ksu.edu. We do not print each of ese out as we receive em, so if you come into e Extension Office it will take some time to find and print. Horse ID Papers May 1 Deadline Horse Identification forms are available at e Extension Office and online. If you are using e same horse as la year, ey can be signed again and dated. Remember, we need pictures as ated on e horse ID papers. If you plan to compete at dirict horse show, you need to have passed e appropriate knowledge and skill te by June 1. The dirict horse show will be held on July 1 in Hutchinson. KJLS/KSF Liveock Nomination 2016 Liveock Nomination guidelines include: * * DNA hair samples required for each nominated animal for ALL species. * All nominated animals mu have an EID tag. On e forms, ere is a place to ick e EID icker. * All Market eer/ heifer nominations are due May 1. * All oer species and commercial animal nominations are due June 15. *There is an annual fee. This is for nominations at have to be returned to e family for any reason. For more nomination information, check out e Rookie Guide for fir-time ate nominating families, and all forms are located on e You Liveock Program website visit Golden Belt Beef Classic Saturday, April 23 rd The Barton County Fair Association invites you to e annual Golden Belt Beef Classic to be held on Saturday, April 23rd at Expo III we of Great Bend. Information is at Regiration mu be pomarked by April 13 to qualify for e advanced lower pre-entry fee. This is a ate-wide event, but ere are special awards for e top eer and heifer from Barton, Ellswor, Pawnee, Rice, Rush, Stafford County.

6 Heart of Kansas 4-H Camp County 4-H Camp is a four day, fun-filled, learning experience for children who have completed grades 1 ru 7 and counselors 15 years of age and older. Activities include canoeing, horses, swimming, archery, air rifle, climbing wall, nature centers, crafts, and more! Workshops include fishing, catapults, robotics, rocketry, compass course, animals/ creatures, & more! Highlights include camp fire, night swim, talent show, night hikes, a dance and more! Kansas You from Barber, Barton, Edwards, Ellis, Finney, Ford, Gray, Haskell, Kingman, Kiowa, Meade, Midway Dirict, Pawnee, Pratt, Seward, Stafford, Stevens, and Walnut Creek Dirict will camp togeer at Rock Springs. After regiration & payment, you will receive e Heart of Kansas Camp Chronicle. It will explain what to pack, travel arrangements to and from camp, prescription medication inructions and many oer details pertaining to 4-H Camp. Rock Springs 4-H Center Rock Springs Center is owned & operated by e Kansas 4-H Foundation. Located in e heart of e Kansas Flint Hills off interate I-70, 13 miles sou of Junction City. 735 Acres of tall grass prairie on rolling hills, neled in a valley surrounded by creeks and woodlands. Cooks provide hearty home-cooked meals. From chicken fingers to pulled pork, not to mention eir famous dinner rolls, you won t go hungry! Cabins provide bunk beds, baroom facilities, and common living area for campers. Groups of 8-10 campers live and learn togeer, under e supervision of two trained counselors. Regiered Nurses are on aff to diribute any medications, as well as handle any illness or accidents.
