1 From the President Hello Colorado CattleWomen, It is officially Fall here in Colorado and I am loving the cooler days. Here on the Eastern Plains, we are weaning calves and getting ready for corn harvest. I m sure each of you are busy doing all your fall roundup work as well. Personally, this is one of my favorite times of the year. Maybe you saw on our Facebook page the funny letter a rancher received from his newly acquired city neighbors asking him to please keep his cows voices down, as they were disturbing his children s sleep? Funny how a ruckus to some is beautiful music others. The sound of balling calves means our year has been successful and we have made it three-quarters of the way to a pay check. Don t forget that October 15th is the deadline for your Colorado CattleWoman of the Year applications and also Rookie of the Year. I know there are several outstanding ladies in our organization and it is so inspiring to see them recognized for all of their amazing accomplishments. You can find the applications on our CCW website: The chosen ladies will be recognized and awarded during the Tuesday night banquet at Mid-Winter Conference in January. Speaking of conference, keep your eyes peeled, as registration will open soon for the 2019 CCA/ CCW Mid-Winter Conference, January 21st 23rd at the Renaissance Hotel in Denver. Our CCW meetings are always during the National Western Stock Show and on the Monday of Martin Luther King Day. Please join us! We will have business meetings in the morning and in the afternoon Brent Young, PhD and Regional Extension Specialist Agriculture & Business Management from Colorado State University has a presentation on growing women s roles in agriculture, Colorado agriculture and markets. Come prepared to be fully informed! See more about Brent and his presentation in the following pages of this newsletter. January is also renewal for our Colorado Cattle- Women dues. Remember, dues are now $25.00 but can still be paid through your local or mailed in directly. The membership dues page is included in this newsletter also. Be sure to get us a good address so you can continue to receive all things Colorado CattleWomen every quarter! Happy Fall, CattleWomen and I hope to see you in Denver this January! Heather Hays Stinnett
2 Local Happenings Black Mesa CattleWomen Host Several Summer and Fall Activities Submitted by Black Mesa CattleWomen The Black Mesa CattleWomen have remained very active this quarter of the year. Work continues on our cookbook with an anticipated release date of December 1-just in time for holiday gift giving. Our cookbook is a tribute to our Charter Members and in addition to their recipes, includes their histories and photos plus recipes and histories of past and present members. We have installed another Beef sign provided to us by the Colorado Beef Council on Colorado Highway 92 close to the entrance to Crawford State Park and the turn-off to reach the North Entrance of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. We have spots located on which to replace the remaining signs in the next few weeks. At the Farmer s Market in Crawford this summer, one of the beef vendors agreed to hand out beef bags to attendees which we stuffed with recipes and literature printed with our check-off dollars. During our Delta County Fair, we manned a booth for three days featuring the Beef cuts and By-Products Steer and posters of our Charter Members and their histories. Both displays were a huge success with many fairgoers expressing surprise at the many by-products obtained from beef. Some members also provided desserts and helped the Delta County Livestock Association serve their annual beef and lamb barbecue at fair time. With the Delta County Livestock Association providing the funding, we designed and printed a brochure outlining proper etiquette for moving through a cattle or sheep drive, the definition of a legal fence in Colorado and other information for being a good neighbor or visitor in ranching country. Our president, Christy Hawk, has given these to local Chambers of Commerce, realtors, and tourists destinations for distribution. The initial printing was 500 copies, and we are almost ready to do another printing. Contact Us! Like Us! Follow Us! coloradocattlewomen@gmail.com Website: Facebook: Colorado Cattlewomen Inc. Moffat County Cattlewomen Celebrate Moffat County Fair 100th Anniversary Submitted by Stacy Gray, Secretary Moffat County CattleWomen In August, the Moffat County Fair Celebrated 100 years and the Moffat County Cattlewomen (MCCW) were busy supporters! To commemorate we compiled recipes and sold our cookbook, Blue Ribbon Recipes. The customized cookbooks highlight local agriculture and our community s history. With support from the Moffat County 4-H Foundation, each buyer at the Junior Livestock Sale received a complimentary copy. Limited number of cookbooks are still available from any MCCW member or ing mccattlewomen@gmail.com and are $20. During the beef breeding show, members served Milk & Cookies to participants and viewers. We also sponsored cash awards for breeding participants. For market beef contestants we handed out 45 brochures Understanding Your Beef Checkoff Program provided by the Colorado Beef Council. Again, we sponsored and organized the Bucket Calf and Cowboy Baby Contests. Three entries in the bucket calf contest received trophies and beef bags. After an article ran in the local newspaper about the baby contest at the first county fair, this year s Cowboy Baby Contest was very popular! Over 20 cowboy themed babies showed their stuff to a large crowd. Each participant received a farm animal storybook, toy and beef bag with recipes. In addition to our cookbook/beef promotion booth, our brand board with recipe rack was on display in the Hall of Education. We sold several new tiles and signed up three new members! Other beef promotions so far this year include, Soil Conservation Dinner, Cattlemen s meeting, Republican Assembly, Craig Chamber of Commerce Taste of Craig/ Business Expo and NW Regional Economic Development Conference. 3 Local Happenings Lincoln County CattleWomen Promote and Serve Beef to Pedal the Plains Participants Submitted by Kelsey Pope, Beef Promotion Chair, Lincoln County CattleWomen Eastern Colorado was host to the 2018 Pedal the Plains bicycle event that traveled through Kiowa, Bennett and Limon, Sept The three-day tour took bicycle riders on a 200-mile adventure as they cycled through the countryside. The Lincoln County CattleWomen (LCCW) were grateful to be chosen to serve beef at the community dinner on Saturday night of the event in Limon. LCCW saw this as a great opportunity to promote and serve beef to the bicycle riders and their families. We chose to serve Hot Beef Sundaes that featured locally-raised hot roast beef on top of mashed potatoes, topped with sour cream, shredded cheese and a cherry tomato to top it off. The meal also came with a fresh green salad and dinner roll. Just over 250 meals were served and several conversations took place about ranching in Eastern Colorado and the important aspects of beef in a healthy diet! CCW Signup for NWSS Booth Submitted by Cindy Mangus, NWSS Chair Plans for the 2019 NWSS are underway, and back by popular demand is the cutting board and meat case! Bring the whole family, your local group, come alone, but come support our industry and help work at the CCW booth at the NWSS. While you are there, enjoy the livestock shows, draft horses, go shopping, and tell your story. This year to make it simple for us to coordinate volunteers, we re using SignUp.com where you can find dates available to sign up. 6 State Fair Beef Carcass Contest Awards Sponsored by CCW This Colorado CattleWomen took on a new role with the Colorado State Fair by sponsoring the market beef carcass contest that coincided with the Jr. Livestock Sale. Each year, the top placing 40 beef exhibitors and their animals make the Jr. Livestock Sale and because the sale is terminal, all 40 animals are sent to harvest. The Colorado State University Meat Science team judges the carcasses and places them using a formula including, but not limited to, hot carcass weight, fat, marbling, ribeye area, yield grade and quality grade. The results are returned to each exhibitor, and this year, included a check and congratulations to the owners of the top two placing carcasses on behalf of CCW. The carcass contest has not had a previous sponsor and CCW stepped in as the sole sponsor to provide the cash prize to the participants. The first place prize of $100 was awarded to Cal Sidwell, Gill, Colo., the second place prize of $50 was awarded to Kade Schweitzer, Wellington, Colo. Congratulations to the Market Beef Carcass Contest winners at the 2018 Colorado State Fair! COLORADO CATTLEWOMEN, INC. C/O HEATHER HAYS STINNETT 303 Beech Kanorado, KS 67741
