1 From the President Happy New Year Colorado CattleWomen! I hope each of you had the merriest of Christmases and you are looking forward to an amazing We saw lots of highs and lows for both our state and the industry in 2018, and my hope is that 2019 will be a year of prosperity and peace and blessing beyond measure. That may be shooting for the stars but it s a great place to start. It has been a cold start to 2019 here on the eastern plains. Wind chills have made it below zero and chopping ice for the cows is quite a chore. Snow on the other hand has been in short supply. We don t see nearly the snow amounts that many of you do across the state. Honestly though, with 40 mile per hour winds it s okay if it waits for another day. As you all know, January is our CCA/CCW Mid-Winter meeting and I m looking forward to seeing you all in Denver on Monday the 21st. Our meetings will start at 8:30 a.m. and we have a full day of updates and presenters lined out. In the afternoon Brent Young, PhD and Regional Extension Specialist Agriculture & Business Management from Colorado State University has a presentation on growing women s roles in Agriculture, Colorado agriculture and markets. On Tuesday evening we will present our Colorado CattleWoman and Rookie of the Year awards during the Colorado Cattlemen s Foundation Banquet. Two highly deserving ladies will be honored this year, as they are evey year. Thank you locals for your nominations to CattleWoman and Rookie of the Year awards. After our meetings be sure to go over to the Stock Show and check out the Colorado Beef Council booth that CCW members volunteer their time for. We can t say thank you enough to all the volunteers this year! You all came out of the wood work and almost 100% of the shifts are filled. This year the Beef Council offered free entry to the National Western Stock Show for volunteers and their families, complimentary rodeo tickets, and money for meals and mileage. Also, they gave $ toward hotels if volunteers worked two or more shifts. If you missed out, be sure to watch for the chance to volunteer next year. We have been at this for over 60 years and it s a great partnership with the Colorado Beef Council. January is also the time to pay your CCW dues. If you have not gotten them paid, you will find our membership brochure in this newsletter. Colorado CattleWomen will turn 78 this year and I m proud of all we do for the beef industry in our state. It s your dues and continued support of CCW that make it all possible. Thank you for being a part of Colorado CattleWomen! Heather Hays Stinnett

2 Local Happenings Fremont County CattleWomen Serve 500 Bowls of Beef Chili Submitted by Kathleen Shoemaker For the 27th year, Fremont County CattleWomen prepared and served 500 bowls of homemade beef chili for Pueblo Bank and Trust s Customer Appreciation Day. The event took place in Canon City on Sat., October 20, This annual event is important to CattleWomen for several reasons, the first being that it is a fundraiser that supports our Scholarship Program. Additionally, it is an opportunity to promote our organization through positive interactions with lots of people. We as CattleWomen have the satisfaction of working together for a common goal and are proud that this tasty product is so well received by the community. Help Ag Groups and Food Bank of the Rockies Make Hunger Disappear Submitted by Sallie Miller A Magician Never Shares How to Do a Trick.Unless it Helps Fight Hunger Can You, Colorado Corn and CommonGround Colorado Help Food Bank of the Rockies Make Hunger Disappear? Food Bank of the Rockies (FBR) is excited to introduce its FREE mobile app Food4Change. This app lets supporters round up change from any credit or debit card purchase and regularly donate it to FBR. It s an easy way to support our mission, help feed those in need and make hunger disappear. FBR is the largest human service nonprofit in Colorado, serving 30 counties across state. Every dollar raised helps us provide four meals to hungry families. Food4Change is as easy as 1, 2, 3. Here s how it works: 1. CONNECT Download the free Food4Change app (available on Apple and Android devices) and connect a card or account you regularly use to make purchases. 2. The following link will give you access to informational tools - including social media images and videos. Hungry families are counting on us to Make Hunger Disappear!

3 Local Happenings Membership Tea for CattleWomen Submitted by Gerrie Colette On a warm Colorado autumn afternoon, Fremont County CattleWomen hosted the second annual membership tea in Florence, Colo. At the Faith Journey Nazarene Church community room. Guests and members enjoyed delightful fruit desserts and fine teas. A powerpoint titled Is it Meat? was presented by Virginia Lindley-Brann. Currently the status of meat substitutes in United States whether vegetarian or lab-grown, is still to be decided. The USDA tends to want to label it meat, whereas the FDA thinks it should be labeled otherwise. Many capitalist including Tyson Meats are investing in this effort. It is a world-wide effort including countries such as Netherlands, Japan and Isreal. This problem arises or is driven due to tremendous growth of population and the need to secure food for millions on this planet. Have you tried to Stump Chuck or used this site for recipes and information yet? 7 Why I belong to Colorado CattleWomen Submitted by Nora Gilstrap The counties of Colorado number 64. There are nearly 34,000 farms and ranches in Colorado. With more than 12,000 beef producers, the cattle industry is the largest Ag sector in the state. (Colorado Dept of Agriculture) I became active in Colorado CattleWomen as SouthEast Quarter Representative after our affiliate disbanded years ago. The SE Quarter has six affiliates whose goals are to educate consumers and promote our product; however, with great distances across this state, it would be challenging to share knowledge and experiences without a state organization. As a volunteer, at past holiday festivals, I joined in serving beef samples and recipes and consequently, made good friends. The January Midwinter Meetings, in conjunction with CCA, gave me the opportunity to join with my husband in learning about current affairs which affect our industry. This is the time when CCW holds planning meetings for the coming year. Our BEEF booth at the National Western Stock Show has been a mainstay for many years. While volunteering, I have come to admire Julie Moore s hard work with the Colorado Beef Council in set up and supplying resources. There again, I have made good friends from all over the state. Beef by-products and cuts of beef are represented on two interactive boards built by Scott Stinnett. These are invaluable at State Fair and for use by CattleWomen across the state for education. Also, at the State Fair 2018, CCW sponsored a market beef carcass contest with the Jr. Livestock Sale. If I had not been a member of CCW, I most likely, would not have known about a successful 5K Poker Run organized by Routt County CattleWomen in October to encourage beef consumption as part of a healthy lifestyle. Participants visited and learned about local ranch lands. When CCW hosted Region IV and V meetings of American National CattleWomen this past spring, I was proud to join with women from Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Sisterhood, that is why I belong to Colorado CattleWomen. CHUCK IS PLEASED TO MEAT YOU. From recipes to cuts to cooking tips and more, Chuck Knows Beef is your go-to guy for all the beefy answers.
