1 President s Letter!!""$%&() Volume 3, Issue 3 Fall 2013 by Brad Colwell It was afternoon on the first nice day of spring in The students of St. Agatha s grade school in Meadville, a small city in northwest Pennsylvania, were leaving school for the day. I walked with the other first graders to the corner of Pine and Liberty where a lady crossing guard escorted us across Pine Street. I was prepared to start the four block walk to my house when I saw five second graders lined up at a crack in the sidewalk along Liberty Street. Yes this was a time when six year olds were instructed to find their own way home after school. Mom was home with my younger sister and baby brother and dad had taken the only car to his job on the railroad. My older brother and sister had departed the same school earlier. Everyone found their own way home and no serious incidents ever occurred. As I looked at the five big seven yearolds lined up one of them yelled go. They all took off running as fast as they could down Liberty toward Poplar Street, about 100 yards away. This was one of the most awesome sights I had ever seen. The next couple days this scene repeated itself as I my amazement continued. On the fourth day I approached these five speedsters and asked if I could join them. They were more than happy to have another competitor so I lined up at the crack. At the word go I blasted out as fast as I could. I don t remember where I placed in the group. It didn t matter as I was having more fun than ever. This race continued every day until the end of the school year. After a few weeks I actually started to win some of them. I was hooked on running. The next school year only one of the five runners was interested in resuming these one block races which we did for only a short time. Over the next several years I ran while playing baseball, basketball and other sports but no pure running races. Occasionally my neighbor Bill would ask me to race against him and Bill always won. I went to Meadville High School where I considered going out for the track team. When I found that my friend Bill was on the team I decided there was no point in joining. This was a mistake I regret as Bill broke the High School mile record, running about 4:40. My senior year I heard that Bill was no longer on the team so I decided to give it a try. By the end of the season I had moved up to the 2 mile spot with a 5:07. I really enjoyed the running and the competition and wished I had started sooner. After High School I ran occasionally for the next 18 years. College, three children, coaching kid s teams, night school and working second jobs got in the way. I did manage to win a mile race in Virginia, on the Navy base where I served, in In 1984, at age 35, my schedule finally cleared and I started to run again. This time I have never stopped, so far accumulating almost 43,000 miles. In 1988, at age 39, I lowered my mile PR, set in High School, to 4:54. That year I also qualified for my first Boston Marathon. In 1990 I achieved a major goal of winning the Masters division of the Harrisburg Mile with a 4:55. However, none of these accomplishments, the hundreds of races run, nor the completion of 19 marathons will ever replace the exhilaration of running that first 100 yard competitive race at age six. HARRC s Annual Fall Picnic will be held at Adams Ricci Park on Sunday, Sept 29, The festivities will begin with a free 5K starting at 1:00 PM (this will be the Sunday club run for that week). After the 5k run is over there will be hamburgers and hot dogs prepared by master chef, Steve Whittle. We are also asking that those that attend bring a covered dish or dessert of some kind. After everyone is stuffed we will then present the AGCS awards and Participation Points Certificates

He began running in high school competing in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m races in crosscountry. Sturek credits his determination, a will to never give up, and a good pair of sneakers to lower his times. Running off and on during college, Sturek began running again this year and focuses on 5K races for now. He participated in his first HARRC Sunday Club Run and says there are a lot of faster people. "The free Sunday Club Runs have been a great way to meet people who live in the Harrisburg area and have an interest in running. Running is a fun and healthy exercise for all ages and abilities. I joined HARRC as a member because of its many benefits from socializing and competing to the discounts on races and apparel at select retail stores." Sturek is married and has one son. 3 HARRC s Secretary, Nikki Bell, recently completed her PhD in Administration and Leadership Studies with IUP. Her dissertation topic examined runners motivation(s) to run in races, specifically their motivation to participate in 5K races. Her findings were extremely interesting and Nikki has summarized them below. Congratulations, Dr. Bell! What motivated individuals to participate in 5K races in Central Pennsylvania? By Nikki Bell In my experience and throughout my study, I found that individuals who participated in 5K races enjoyed talking about why they run. In fact, I had over 600 responses to my running motivation survey and interviewed more than 20 local runners. Here are some of the most significant findings. Primary Motivators for Running Competition/achievement, health/fitness, altruism, and social affiliation were prominent positive predictors of 5K race attitudes Of these, altruism and health/fitness had the heaviest influence on runner s attitudes In my study s ranking question, men did rank competitive reasons to run 5K races higher than women, but both men and women had four health/fitness reasons in their top five ranked motivations. The support and encouragement of friends and family was a common response in the interviews, with many of the participants claiming that knowing their friends and family would be cheering for them at the finish line motivated them to keep going during the race. I am a Runner When a person identified as a runner, they were likely to have positive attitudes towards 5K races, a supportive network of friends and family, and a perception that they can run a 5K race. Also, if a person identified as a runner, they were more likely to intend to engage in running activities. Through the qualitative interviews and the identity literature, I found that a runner s identity was a personal and intimate choice that only the individual could make, with or without the support of their social networks. Participating in races helped individuals develop their runner identities and become more dedicated to the events. Also, the more often a person participated in a 5K race, the more comfortable they were with the event and the more likely they would be to run more 5K races. Past participation also prompted loyalty to certain 5K events for some of the participants due to their good experiences and future intentions. Preregistration as an Incentive In the context of 5K race participation, people who intended to participate in a future 5K race had the benefit of preregistering in the event to provide an added incentive to get to the starting line on race day. Preregistration in a race guaranteed certain items for the event (e.g. t-shirt, gym bag) and sometimes came at a lower price. These incentives were enough for the participants in the interviews to advocate for preregistration and the benefit of planning out their race calendars months in advance.!"!"$%&()*((+,*-./) & )*170)$809)$5::713),;54)! /01!!! +0/0123!! /240CPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!09C= ! 2;;+0!!C PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP57+:6;2:0CPPPEPPPEPPPPPP!
