Race Day This guide is fr a 2 pm start 1. Onshre setup Arrive at 12 nn Bats and spars ut n deck and check fr: Wrn rpes Lse fittings Water ut f the tanks (which shuldn t be there but check anyway) Rig bats by 12:45 am Briefing with cach at 12:45 am What went wrng with each crew last week Review phtgraphs and vides t shw the rights and wrngs Attitudes f skippers and crews Questins frm the crews Understand and memrise the curse Get changed and sign n Hist and check spinnaker Duble check everything else Remember that it is the jb f the skipper t make sure the bat is crrectly set up t prevent any mishaps n the water. 2. Persnal clthing and equipment Research weather and traffic safety n the day man.shtml Descriptin f the right clthing: Ht weather: Life jacket (well fitted under rash vest t prevent catching n bat fittings) Rash vest Shrt wetsuit Sunscreen Glves Bties Hat Bttle f water Cld weather, as abve, plus: Lng wetsuit Waterprf spray jacket (well fitted) Page 1

3. Safety, leaving and returning t the beach (Applies t M16FSSC) Never return t the shre unless a rescue bat is ntified and can assist crssing the ferry lanes The ferries and jet cats have right f way Bat Maintenance A well-packed up bat Hull and fixtures Fresh water wash ff and dry after use All rpes t be tied up ff the bttm f the bat Buyancy tanks remved Bm lays acrss straps Spars All wires pulled dwn straight and tied ff (nt wrapped arund the mast) Dn t kink wires Tie up stays with halyard and up t tpping lift arund the mast step and tie it ff Fils Sails Check that the centerbard and rudder fit prir t launching the bat. Never leave in the sun because it will cause the fils t warp Freshwater wash, dried and place in bag and laid flat Dn t put away wet as this will cause smsis Care fr the edges, they re very fragile! Care fr sails is paramunt fr fast sailing Where pssible place the jib inside the mainsail and then rll square t the battens fr strage this helps prtect the jib and stps wire print int the fabric als helps t prtect the leach f the jib and keeps the clth flat Buyancy hatch cvers When n shre, remve the buyancy hatch cvers. Otherwise n a ht day the air will expand and blw the jins apart. Buyancy hatch cvers shuld have a 1mm diameter hle drilled thrugh the middle t help expanding air escape. Page 2

4. Rigging the bat: 1. Place mast in step. 2. Attach side stays. 3. Run spinnaker halyard and tie the tail t the tw ring. 4. Always tape up the quick-release pins. 5. Turn bat ver n its side in the cradle and attach the bat bender t the mast and bw. Nte:- Bat-bender tensiner is made up f a triple blck with a becket and cleat with a stainless-steel hk, and a triple blck. Bat bender must have track slide t prevent crushing the sail track. 6. Attach the tack f the jib t the bw Page 3

Nte:- the duble purchase fr the jib-luff tensin. 7. Tensin the bat bender. Nte:- Never ver tensin rig, when rigging (indicated by the mast inverting as in pht). 8. Fit the head f the jib t the mast and tape up. Nte:- Shck crd must be fitted frm the side stays thrugh the jib vernier t prevent the spinnaker frm being caught between the mast and the frestay. 9. Pull mainsail up mast frm bat up. Page 4

Nte:- Twist the rpe n the head f the mainsail until the head is level with the black band and attach t quick-release pin. Never attach the mainsail withut the twists as the sail will slide dwn the mast (see pht). 10. Stand the bat back up and pint bat int the breeze (never leave the bat unattended and keep an eye ut fr changes in wind directin). 11. Fit bm t gseneck. 12. Fit clew f mainsail t uthaul fitting n the bm. 13. Run the mainsheet. The pht ppsite shws the crrect way t tie ff the mainsheet s that the blcks can cme tgether easily. Tensin the mainsheet making sure that the bridle blck and the bm blck g blck t blck and that the tensin in the leech f the mainsail is such that it is nt ging t cause the sail t stall in light air if the sail is ver sheeted. 14. Fit the vang Page 5

Make sure that the pen part f the hk is facing frward s it wn t catch sheets! 15. Run the jib sheets Put a thumb knt in ne end f the rpe, run it thrugh the eye f the jib, dwn thrugh the jib blcks, back up thrugh the eye f the jib in the ppsite directin, and then tie anther thumb knt, making sure that the knts are n the windward side f the jib fr each tack. 16. Set the spinnaker up. a. Tie the head t the spinnaker halyard and spinnaker sheets t the clews making sure that the brace and sheet are thrugh the tweaker blcks and utside the side stays. b. Always hist and set the spinnaker t make sure it is set up crrectly befre leaving the beach (this will minimise the chance f muck ups n the water). c. Spinnaker shuld always be set n the leeward side (i.e. mst cases n the prt side). d. Attach tpping lift and kicker t the spinnaker ple, and tape up the G clips. e. Velcr shuld be fitted t frnt tank t keep the spinnaker frm flying verbard when the breeze increases. Page 6

5. On the Water - Prceed t the start line a. Always take nte n the way what the breeze is ding ver the curse b. Sail t windward t make sure the bat feels balanced c. Check the line fr bias d. Make sure yu get a transit e. Hang arund the start bat s yu can set yur watch f. Never sail t far either side f the start line during the cuntdwn, especially in light air, as yu ll have prblems getting back t the favured end f the line g. Always check fin and rudder fr weed prir t the start h. Make sure yur bat is dry at all times! 6. Start-line preparatin 1. Always get a transit f the starting line, by: a. G t the windward f the start bat and line up thrugh the starting mast n the start bat thrugh the leeward-end pin t a fixed pint n the shre. 2. T find ut which end f the line is favured, there are number f ways t check this ut: a. Use the start bat and its flags as a wind indicatr b. Have tw bats, set their watches fr ne minute in the middle f the line, ne sail ut t the bat end, the ther sail ut t the pin end and start n zer, with the bat-end bat starting n starbard, and the pin-end bat starting n prt tack as sn as yu can see wh is ging t crss wh first, pull away and nt shw the ppsitin c. Luff head t wind at the start bat and check the angle ff 90 degrees f the line, and d the same at the pin end d. Sail dwn the line n starbard ease the mainsail ff until it just backwinds hlding it at the mainsheet blck, tack arund, and if yu have t ease it ff as fr the starbard tack, the line is biased t the pin, alternatively if yu have t pull it n, it is biased t the start bat e. Start-line bias is secndary t gd psitin n the line, especially if the line is shrt 3. Always stay clse t the start bat befre the warning signal, s yu can get an exact time rather than being away frm the bat and lsing time due t the time it takes fr sund t travel Page 7

4. It is imprtant that yu understand hw t stp the bat dead in the water and hld it n the line and be able t sail it backwards if necessary. 5. The frward hand when hlding the bat still is ready t back the jib shuld the bat try t g beynd head t wind this will really mess up yur day, and prbably a few thers t bt 6. When appraching the line lk fr a hle t leeward and be prepared t fight t keep yur psitin 7. On a large line, be mindful that generally there is mid-line sag and n ne is ever really clse t the line, as can been seen in phtgraph 8. The start has timed the start perfectly as can been seen in bth the phtgraph, and particularly in the vide where the cunt-dwn time can be heard clearly 2. Always be aware f bias in the starting line frm the warning signal t the start can vary dramatically. As yu can see in the vide, Prt tack start, the starbard bats can t even get acrss the line, and there is nly ne bat (1362) that started apprpriately Start 5 Prt tack start Page 8

9. Sailing t windward Accelerating in Waves a. Once yu ve started, yu shuld knw where yu want t psitin yur bat n the curse. b. In light air, crew psitin shuld be well frward and ppsite each ther. c. Never ver sheet the mainsail, and always make sure yu have a little bit f mainsheet in reserve t help accelerate the bat remember if yu hld the mainsail n hard, yu will nt give the bat a chance t get up n tp f the water. d. The jib shuld be set s that the ft f the headsail is nly just tuching the gunwale, nt laying ver it. e. Always be cnscius f breeze lines and be ready t make rm fr yur crew t cme acrss t help swing the bat flat rather than ease the mainsail ff t far. f. Always try t ensure when bth crew are n the windward rail leaning, that they are psitined clse tgether (dn t ever get separatin). g. As the breeze increases abve 15 knts, the centerbard can cme up t assist in keeping the bat flat. Light air tacking Light air tacking slw mtin Tacking in Breeze Tacking in Breeze Slw Mtin 10. Tacking Frm the vides the key pints are: a. Skipper allws the crew time t cme t windward t uncleat the jib and assist in rll-tacking the bat. b. Yu ll ntice there is minimal rudder mvement turning the bat is dne by the mvement f the crew c. In light air, the crew after helping rll the bat thrugh the tack, will slide back dwn t the leeward side and pass the jib sheet t the skipper t cleat d. In medium and heavy air, with bth crew n the rail, the frward hand will use the nearest hand t the cleat t let the jib ff and the ther hand t take the new sheet frm the blck and g acrss the bat withut letting it g (this ensures that the jib is autmatically pulled n as the crew arrives n the new windward side. e. It is imprtant that the skipper ensures that as the breeze increases that the bat is tacked mre slwly t allw mre time t cme ut f the tack n the right angle and the crew being able t hit the new windward side at the same time t accelerate the bat n the new tack Page 9

Spinnaker set 3 Reaching, drpping, and runding bttm mark Overtaking Overtaking when reaching 11. Histing the spinnaker a. Tweakers shuld be pre-set fr the curse t be sailed b. Spinnaker must be set frm the leeward spinnaker bag c. If at all pssible, always try t apprach the tp mark, s that yu can pre-set the spinnaker ple d. Frward hand place the brace int the beak f the spinnaker ple and pull 0.5m f ple ut e. Skipper hists the spinnaker halyard t the tp f the mast f. Frward hand pulls the ple-launcher rpe g. Skipper t pull n the spinnaker sheet and hands t the frward hand h. Frward hand shuld be psitined t best bserve the leading edge f the spinnaker i. Crew gets c bard up then grabs spin sheet 12. Reaching a. After setting the spinnaker b. In light air crew are well frward and acrss the bat frm each ther c. Leeward tweaker shuld be ff, and windward ne pulled n d. Jib shuld be eased e. The spinnaker shuld be just getting a gentle rll n the luff f. The centerbard shuld be up g. As the breeze increases, the centerbard can cme up further h. The crew weight can be psitined further aft accrding t strength f breeze but never shuld yu get any fre-aft separatin between the skipper and the crew i. The mainsail shuld be trimmed s the leeward telltale in the middle f the sail, is always flwing aft. j. The vide shws: i. Gd crew psitin, and minimal crew mvement ii. gentle mvements with the tiller and mainsail iii. It is far better that the spinnaker is given every pprtunity t get as far away frm the rig as pssible s it is nt a bad thing t see the spinnaker flding every nw and then Page 10

Dwnwind Gybing wing mark 13. Running a. As a guide fr ple psitin, have sme wl attached t the side stay and set the ple square t the wl b. Windward tweaker shuld be half ff t allw the ple t be pulled square enugh, hwever if the ple starts t bunce arund, the tweaker needs t be pulled n harder (leeward tweaker shuld be cmpletely ff) c. Always make sure yu try t keep the bm and the spinnaker ple lined up d. As in reaching, the spinnaker shuld be always eased ut as far as pssible, allw the leading edge t rll in and ut e. Depending n the wind and sea cnditins, the centerbard shuld be used t assist in the stability f the bat (i.e. in heavier air the bat will becme uncntrllable with t much centerbard up, s as a rule f thumb, the centerbard shuld be pushed dwn mre as the breeze increases) f. In extreme cnditins, the leeward tweaker shuld be pulled n hard, and the centerbard pushed all the way dwn. 14. Gybing a. Set the tweakers set fr new directin b. Skipper takes the spinnaker brace and sheet c. Fire the ple ff the mast and at the same time, brace the spinnaker aft d. Flat the spinnaker thrugh the gybe e. Skipper turns the bat t gybe f. The crew thrws the bm acrss; skipper assists if required g. Crew re-sets the ple n the new windward side h. The skipper passes the sheet t the crew i. In fresh breeze, always d the tweakers after the gybe, t prevent the bat frm slwing up and putting t much pressure in the mainsail as the bat gybes 15. Drpping the spinnaker a. Skipper pulls n the brace as the frward hand remves the ple frm the mast b. Skipper uncleats the spinnaker halyard and the crew pulls the spinnaker dwn int a bunch and then int the bag. It is imprtant that the skipper desn t cmpletely let the halyard g because the spinnaker may fly frward ver the bw and g under the bat. c. Once the spinnaker is dwn, the launcher rpe frm the spinnaker ple has t be pulled dwn t the bm level s it desn t interfere with the ft f the mainsail. Page 11

Race management by Baz Atkins. 16. Mark rundings general a. When appraching the tp mark, always try t give yurself enugh time and distance frm the mark t allw the spinnaker ple t be pre-set b. After runding the tp mark, find the wing mark and decide whether the reach is ging t be tight r free Try t d this prir t windward mark. c. If it is tight, always sail abve the wing mark in the light air, and dwn t the wind mark in the pressure d. If it is free, always sail belw the wing mark in the pressure, and cme up t the mark in the light air e. If it is free, yu knw that the next reach is ging t be tight, therefre yu can cme up earlier and abve it, s allw t square away and gybe early t allw the ple t g frward runding the mark f. At the bttm mark always make sure that yu have enugh rm between yu and the mark s when yu rund it, yu cme right up n the wind, right n the mark (if yu apprach t tight, prir t runding the mark yu ll cme ut lw and wide) g. Always be aware f nn-verlapped bats and make sure yu call yur rights n them early h. When appraching the finish, always ensure that yu get yur bat acrss the line, at the first pprtunity (this culd pick up places in tight finishes, as well as make up time n yur ppsitin) This is a guide t the best way t set up and assist the crews befre starting. During my time as caching, I have never been afraid f giving the sailrs as much infrmatin as I can pssibly gather, t assist them t achieve the results they all desire. I am yet t see a hrse trainer, ftball team, r swimmer, wh is nt given race tactics prir t the race and the latest infrmatin n the curse. This I believe assists the sailrs in being able t sail their bats ptimally. It is extremely imprtant as a cach t be n the same level as the peple yu re caching, i.e. there is mutual respect and n fear in being able t apprach ask questins. Steps t success 1. Get ut n the water early 2. Check the wind, the breeze angles, the tide, hw t best use it t ur advantage 3. Always g ver varius parts f the curse t ensure yu get true wind readings 4. Yu can use such things as mred bats, cmpasses, smke, wl stick, etc 5. Each bat prir t the start cmes arund, shws me their sails n the wind, s we can make sure they are set up ptimally fr tdays cnditins. 6. Give them the favured side f the curse, the favured side f the start line, the tide, and wind phasing 7. Make sure they are prepared t put in a 110% 8. Always leave de-briefs until the next day r befre the next time n the water, as I believe de-briefs are cunter-prductive immediately after racing as the kids just want t get their bats away, get changed and enjy themselves. Have pen discussins n what went right and wrng last time. Page 12

Wind Start Nte bttm 2 battens n leach f mainsail are straight, and that the head is twisted ff a little Training drills 1. Set up a shrt curse 2. Have three-minute starts and as many races as pssible 3. Make sure yu get bats used t being up n the line well befre the starting signal 4. Check crew psitin and sail psitins during the racing, and assist them where pssible 5. Hw t wrk the waves upwind (the psitin f the bat t the wave never be afraid t sail a lwer angle if it helps get n the wave quicker) 6. Changing gears with the vang a. Adjusting the vang as the bat speed increases t help t keep the bttm tw battens in a straight line (see Figure 2) b. In light air, ease the vang ff t build apparent wind speed 7. When ding windward-leeward legs, get the crews t sail square runs withut the spinnaker ple, gybing cntinually t get used t wrking the brace and sheet at the same time 8. At the gybe marks, make sure they are using the right techniques t get thrugh the gybe safely n matter what the cnditins are 9. Appraching the bttm mark make sure the bat is nt t clse, s that it prevents ging t wide after cming n the wind 10. As the breeze increases, make sure that bth upwind and dwnwind, the crews are squeezing as much speed ut f the bat as they can, i.e. anticipating and wrking the puffs and lulls, using the waves, etc 11. Make sure when running, g up t chase breeze, and away in the pressure 12. Never ver trim the mainsail 13. Always encurage the crew t put in mre effrt, get them t accept that the amunt f variables in bat racing is mre than any ther sprt, and everyne is ging t get a spade in the face at sme time in the race, and whever gets ver it the quickest and encurages each ther, will beat the guys wh want t fight amngst themselves 14. When a prblem arises with yur bat, never raise yur vice t yur crew, srt the prblem ut as sn as yu can quietly, as this will assist yu in getting back t the race quicker 15. Remember - an upset crew is n gd t anyne Page 13

Twing Receiving a tw: 1. Drp the mainsail if pssible and rll up 2. Furl the jib arund the frestay if pssible 3. Take the tw rpe thrugh the ring n the bw and arund the base f the mast three times and hld in hands (dn t tie ff) 4. Crew mve aft and balance the bat 5. Always steer directly behind tw bat and make sure yu allw enugh rpe t keep clear f the tw bat s wash On the Water (visual signals) Page 14

ISAF Rules regarding Pumping & Prhibited Actins: PROPULSION 42.1 Basic Rule Except when permitted in rule 42.3 r 45, a bat shall cmpete by using nly the wind and water t increase, maintain r decrease her speed. Her crew may adjust the trim f sails and hull, and perfrm ther acts f seamanship, but shall nt therwise mve their bdies t prpel the bat Prhibited Actins Withut limiting the applicatin f rule 42.1, these actins are prhibited: (a) pumping: repeated fanning f any sail either by pulling in and releasing the sail r by vertical r athwartship bdy mvement; (b) rcking: repeated rlling f the bat, induced by (1) bdy mvement, (2) repeated adjustment f the sails r centrebard, r (3) steering; (c) ching: sudden frward bdy mvement, stpped abruptly; (d) sculling: repeated mvement f the helm that is either frceful r that prpels the bat frward r prevents her frm mving astern; (e) repeated tacks r gybes unrelated t changes in the wind r t tactical cnsideratins Exceptins (a) A bat may be rlled t facilitate steering. (b) A bat s crew may mve their bdies t exaggerate the rlling that facilitates steering the bat thrugh a tack r a gybe, prvided that, just after the tack r gybe is cmpleted, the bat s speed is nt greater than it wuld have been in the absence f the tack r gybe. (c) Except n a beat t windward, when surfing (rapidly accelerating dwn the frnt f a wave) r planing is pssible, the bat s crew may pull in any sail in rder t initiate surfing r planing, but each sail may be pulled in nly nce fr each wave r gust f wind. (d) When a bat is abve a clse-hauled curse and either statinary r mving slwly, she may scull t turn t a clsehauled curse. (e) If a batten is inverted, the bat s crew may pump the sail until the batten is n lnger inverted. This actin is nt permitted if it clearly prpels the bat. (f) A bat may reduce speed by repeatedly mving her helm. (g) Any means f prpulsin may be used t help a persn r anther vessel in danger. (h) T get clear after grunding r clliding with a vessel r bject, a bat may use frce applied by her crew r the crew f the ther vessel and any equipment ther than a prpulsin engine. Hwever, the use f an engine may be permitted by rule 42.3(i). (i) Sailing instructins may, in stated circumstances, permit prpulsin using an engine r any ther methd, prvided the bat des nt gain a significant advantage in the race.
