1 6 th Divisin Flyers/Orillia Aermdelers Wings Prgram The 6 th Divisin Flyers/Orillia Aermdelers Wings Prgram is an Instructin prgram with tried and prven methds f teaching newcmers t the hbby/sprt f aer mdeling t becme prficient Pilts. This training prgram has been designed t prvide a basic standard f flight instructin and safety. We believe that cnsistency in the maneuvers being taught and attaining a high level f flying skill, while at the same time keeping interest high, is f prime imprtance. Our hbby/sprt is n different than any ther hbby, as far as learning envirnment is cncerned. We have a requirement fr learning a mtr skill that begins usually at Level Zer, and prceeds thrugh varius levels f cmpetence, while gaining the ability t perate a new piece f machinery (yur miniature aircraft). Ntice the use f the wrd "Level". The ultimate result f any training effrt must be devted t a final level f cmpetence in the skill being taught. In ur case, it is nt nly the sl flight f ur R/C mdel, but flying safely, cnsistently, and with cmplete cnfidence. Attaining the final skill level is nt a single, unique, giant leap which can be taught singularly, but rather it is the fitting tgether f an assciated series f intermediate attainable skill levels, each f increasing difficulty. All Students MUST fly with the assistance f a Club apprved Instructr until such time as he/she has passed his/her Wings Test. The Wings Prgram is divided int five levels fllwing the initial pre-flight apprval. Level 1: is devted t pre-flight and pst flight prcedures including airwrthiness, engine starting and tuning, radi range check, use f the cntrls and first flight check by the Instructr. Level 2: gets the Student int the air and cncentrates n basic straight and level flight, shallw turns and race track patterns. Level 3: sharpens the Student skills f Level 2 maneuvers, steepens the medium bank turns and adds tw basic aerbatic maneuvers demnstrating cntrlled flight f the aircraft. Level 4: adds the take-ff, stall recvery at altitude and a rectangular traffic pattern and apprach (n tuch-dwn). Level 5: the Student learns the final landing prcedures, crss wind landings and frced landings. Pre-Flight Apprval 1

2 The chice f aircraft fr the beginner t train n is mst imprtant. The high wing, tricycle landing gear cnfiguratin is mst desirable and recmmended. Tday we have many gd aircraft t chse frm such as: Gldberg Eagle 63 Gldberg Eagle 2 Hbbic Superstar 40 Sig Kadet LT 40 Thunder Tiger Trainer 40 Hbbystar 60 MK III r any ther " cabin" type airplane with a flat bttm r semi-symmetrical airfil. Prir t arriving at the field t begin flight training, the student shuld present his aircraft fr the initial pre-flight check t any qualified Club member fr an apprpriate airwrthiness check. This check will include: Center f Gravity in the prper place. Flying surfaces warp free Radi, tank and engine prperly installed. Cntrl surfaces hinged prperly and wrking smthly withut binding. Nse wheel (if installed) prperly aligned and wrking smthly. Mtr preferably run-up and tuned prperly. It has been the custm that mst new students "shw up" at the field with their planes "ready t fly", hwever these checks are better dne in the hme f either the student r a qualified member. This makes any necessary changes easier and eliminates the waste f valuable Instructr time at the field. Fllwing cmpletin f the abve inspectins the Student is ready fr flight instructin and shuld call an Instructr t arrange a mutually agreeable training schedule. All students will be prvided with a prgress chart. (Please dn't frget t bring yur prgress chart t the field. ) Level 1 Task Descriptins and Measurement Criteria The Student shuld present his apprved aircraft t the Instructr at the field ready fr flight instructin as fllws: 2

3 The Student will learn and demnstrate crrect range check prcedures fr his/her radi, per the manufacturer's recmmendatins. He/she will als demnstrate prper use f all cntrls. The Student will learn and demnstrate hw t start and tune the engine t assure full pwer at all flight attitudes and check fr reliable idle. The Instructr will flight check the aircraft fr airwrthiness. The Instructr will be certain the Student is aware f MAAC and Club rules. The Student will learn pst flight prcedures and clean up. Level 2 During this level the Student shuld cmplete all pre flight checks, including a radi range check and cntrl surface checks. He/she shuld start the engine and tune it prperly. He/she will learn t slw taxi t the end f the runway in preparatin fr take ff. The Instructr will perfrm all take ffs and landings during this level and assist the Student during air wrk when required. The Student will learn and demnstrate the ability t cntrl the aircraft in straight and level flight with help frm the Instructr as t the attitude and altitude when required. Grund track will be rughly parallel t the runway heading. The Student will learn and demnstrate a 15 degree banked turn (shallw turn) with help frm the Instructr as t altitude and prper angle f bank. The Student will learn and demnstrate the ability t cntrl the aircraft in Square Figure 8 and Rund (lazy) Figure 8 patterns. These maneuvers shuld be executed in such a manner that the turns are made in directins away frm the pit area. Right hand patterns will be flwn t the right f and left-hand patterns will be flwn t the left f the Pilts bx. The Directin f flight is OUTBOUND in the center f the pattern in frnt f the pilt s bx. The full imprtance f this practice will be fully understd when the Student starts learning landing patterns. 3

4 The Student will learn an Oval RaceTrack Flight, then Oblng Track bth clckwise and cunter clckwise in a "circuit" arund the field. The Instructr will explain the terms "Int wind", Dwn wind", "Crss wind" and Base leg". All Dwn wind and Int wind legs will be parallel t the runway heading as required. The Student will learn and demnstrate his ability t slw taxi his aircraft. Level 3 The Student cntinues t demnstrate all pre flight checks, engine starting and prper engine tuning The Student will demnstrate the angle f bank t 30 degrees fr turns, Oval Racetrack and Figure 8 patterns. The Student will practice the Figure 8 patterns with special regard t maintaining a cnsistent altitude and grund track, despite wind drift, and withut Instructr crrectin. The Student will learn the Prcedure Turn maneuver, bth clckwise and cunter clckwise, with emphasis n a cnsistent grund track. 4

5 The Student will learn and demnstrate the Lp and Split-S maneuvers. The Student will demnstrate the ability t maintain prper cntrl f his aircraft during high-speed taxi n the runway at 1/3 t 1/2 thrttle. N weaving shuld be bserved. Level 4 The Student cntinues t demnstrate all pre flight checks, engine starting and prper engine tuning. The Student will shw his/her ability t maintain a prper runway heading during high-speed taxi runs. The Student will learn and demnstrate prficiency in take-ff. He/she will learn the necessity t maintain a climb ut angle f nt mre than 15 t 30 degrees until a safe altitude is reached befre the first turn utbund. 5

6 The Student will learn and demnstrate prficiency in slw flight using 1/2 t 1/3 t 1/4 thrttle, and bserve the behavir f the aircraft in bth near stall and stalled cnditins. These prcedures will be cnducted at altitude until the Student is cnfident flying his aircraft under these cnditins withut incident. The Student will learn prficiency in recvery frm straight ahead and turning stalls in slw flight. The Student will learn and demnstrate prficiency in the landing pattern with respect t slwer flight and 15 degree maximum bank. Aircraft MUST arrive ver the end f the runway, n the runway heading with wings level t cmplete the maneuver. 6

7 Level 5 The Student will learn and demnstrate the ability t land the aircraft and bring it t a full stp n the runway. The Student will learn and demnstrate the tuch and g landing. The Student will learn and demnstrate the ability t land the aircraft n the runway frm an unexpected frced landing frm altitudes as lw as the nrmal traffic pattern. The student will learn the crsswind landing. When The Student can fly safely n his/her wn withut being a menace t the ther pilts r spectatrs he/she will be permitted t fly "sl" fr a shrt perid f time in rder t practice his/her air wrk and take ffs and landings. The Instructin staff and ther pilts will bserve the student flying under varying weather cnditins. After a perid f a cuple f weeks, r when Student r the Instructr feels he/she can satisfactrily fly the Wings Test, the Student shall be prvided the pprtunity t try the test. The Student will demnstrate all requirements f the Wings Test which will include: prper pre-flight prcedures, the take-ff and climb t a safe altitude, tw square figure 8's, tw rund figure 8's, tw prcedure turns(left & right), ne pwer n landing, and ne dead stick landing. If successful, the NEW PILOT will be awarded his/her Pilts Wings Badge and will be permitted t fly n his/her wn at the Club apprved flying site. 7
