2 Cub Scut Klndike Derby 2019 Welcme t the Cub Scut Klndike Derby! Teams will push/pull their sleds thrugh 8 Klndike Themed challenges, cmpleting each task that will teach scuts new skills and test thse that have been learned during their scuting experiences. This year we are adding a few elements t this cming Cub Scut Klndike Outing. There will be a ptluck lunch this year. All Packs are encuraged t bring sharable chilis, chwders and stews as well as sides such as crn bread r chips. There will be a separate cmpetitin with judges sampling yur favrite recipes. We will als have a Flag Retirement Statin which will be facilitated by Bys Scuts frm Trp 48 ut f Carver. They will als be helping parents and ther leaders by serving as Safety Officers fr the event. Camping reservatins fr Friday the 18 th and/r Saturday the 19 th and RSVP thrugh the Cuncil Website. 3 Cub Scut Klndike Derby 2019 Schedule: 8am 8:45am Sled Check-in/Registratin/Crck Pt Plug-In 8:45am Opening Ceremnies 9am Statins Open (Prceed t yur units assigned statin) 9am-Nn First 4 Statins Nn 1pm Lunch and Ck-Off Judging 1pm 3pm Last 4 Statins 3pm 3:30pm Sled Race, Mre Fd and Ranges 3:30 Awards/Recgnitins and Clsing Ceremnies

4 Sled Teams Each team will be respnsible fr their sled and items required n the sled. Items MUST be fastened in/n the sled and be available fr use at the statins. Plans fr the Klndike Derby Sled: pdf Teams shuld cnsist f 6 Scuts per sled. Each Team Member MUST push/pull the sled t each statin. Each Sled must have a team flag with team name written n it. +5 pints fr a Team Chant will be given at time f Sled Check In. Please watch the weather reprts fr the day f the event and dress apprpriately (hats, glves/mittens). The Klndike can be a COLD and WINDY place. Class A unifrms are nt required. Scuts will need t wear bts t the event, NO SNEAKERS ALLOWED! It is always a gd idea t pack extra scks, hats and glves in case f inclement weather. Any changes in schedule, due t weather, will be cmmunicated as sn as pssible. Dens are encurage t bring a crckpt f their favrite chwder/chili/stew r bread. Alternate Lunch will NOT be prvided.

6 Plar Bear Attack (First Aid) Knwledge/Task Cmpletin: What are the tw mst imprtant things t d t stp a cut frm bleeding? 5 pints: elevate the arm 5 pints: apply pressure What is universal sign fr chking? 5 pints fr crrect answer Hw d yu assist a chking victim wh cannt breathe? 5 pints fr the answer Heimlich Maneuver Scuts will lcate ne f its team members in the wds. This team member was attacked by a Plar Bear!! Sled teams will need t place the victim s arm in a sling, stp bleeding, and create a stretcher t carry the victim ut f the wds t safety!! 10 pints fr a prper sling, 5 pints t stp the bleeding, 20 pints t carry the Scut ut f the wds n a stretcher. (Best times fr this task will be displayed n a leader bard. 10 pints will be added t the winner s ttal.)

7 Shelter Building Knwledge/Task Cmpletin: Name 2 ways t prtect fd frm the predatrs at night 5 pints fr each Name 3 ways t make a campfire safe 5 pints each (examples wuld be: clear debris, keep tents away, create a ring f rcks, keep water and sand nearby) Search the wds and use items n yur sled t create a shelter big enugh fr all f yur team members 5 pints if large enugh 5 pints if appears t be able t prtect the team frm rain/snw 20 pints if stable enugh t prtect against predatrs!!! (judge will gently shake the structure t make sure it is stable and wn t EASILY fall apart)

8 Bear Prfing yur Supplies (Knt Tying) Knwledge/Task Cmpletin: Demnstrate the fllwing knts: Overhand, Square, bwline, clve hitch, duble half hitch and slip knt 5 Pints fr each knt Each Scut will take turns thrwing a 25 ft rpe ver a branch, securing a weighted bag with a square knt n ne end, tie a bwline arund the ther end and lift the bag ff the grund. 25 pints The best time will be recrded n a leader bard. 10 pints will be added t the leading sled s ttal.

9 Escaping the Plar Bear!! (Team building) Knwledge/Task Cmpletin: Yur sled is being chased by a Plar Bear!! Escape by using blcks f ice (wd planks) t crss the cean frm ne glacier t the ther!! Using nly the (3) wden planks, yur whle team must crss a finish line 40 feet away withut stepping int the cean. 35 Pints if successful Yur team member is suffering frm snw blindness!!! Get them t safety by giving verbal cmmands and leading him t the rest f the team. A Scut starts 50 feet away. He is blind flded and must navigate arund 4 bstacles and make it back t the team using nly the verbal cmmands frm his team mates. 20 Pints. Subtract 5 pints fr any bstacle missed. The fastest time achieved by all teams will be displayed n a leader bard. The fastest sled will receive an additinal 30 pints.

10 Plar Bear Hunt (Range Sprt) Knwledge/Task Cmpletin: Plar Bear target will be set up at the Archery Range. Each Scut will have 2 pprtunities t thrw 3 Spears at the targets. Pints will be determined based n the lcatin f hits 30 additinal pints will be given t the team wh utilizes a hme-made Atl-Atl and blunted darts (t be given t the range fficer directly after sled check-in. Will be returned after awards/clsing remarks).

12 Escaping the Klndike Cmpass and Wildlife Identificatin Knwledge/Task Cmpletin: Scuts will match phts f wildlife t their tracks (7) 5 Pints fr each crrect identificatin Name the Cardinal Directins n a cmpass 5 Pints Name the Ordinal Directins n a cmpass 5 Pints Each Scut will successfully mark a given pint n a cmpass chart 10 pints (n assistance) 5 pints (with assistance)

13 String Burning (Fire Safety/Fire Cnstructin) Knwledge/Task Cmpletin: Scuts will be presented with a frame with 2 strings. The bttm string is 12 inches frm the grund; the secnd is 18 inches frm the grund. The Scuts must build a fire frm NATURAL materials, frm their sleds and frm the surrunding area. It cannt be any higher than the bttm string. After a WEBLEO r ADULT lights the fire, it will need t burn the tp string. Fuzz sticks/ hmemade NATURAL fire starters can be used. 50 Pints fr burning the string in the alltted 30 minutes. An additinal 10 pints will be added if the WEBELO uses flint/steel (It is BSA plicy that nly Webels and Adults may light a fire, s these additinal pints will nt be btainable if there is nt a Webel n the team)

14 Crssing the Glacier Crevasse Knwledge/Task Cmpletin: Scuts, using materials frm the sled and items fund arund the site, will need t crss a crevasse (shulders n either side f an access rad r gully). The team may start with ne member n the ppsite side f the crevasse t assist tying ff thrwn rpes etc. 10 Pints fr each Scut wh successfully crsses the crevasse withut tuching the grund. 30 additinal pints will be awarded any team wh can als get their sled acrss in the alltted 30 minutes.
