4 Dear Unit Leaders: The Klndike Derby is a trek f discvery fr the participants, and each year, many f the statin prblems are based n real- life events surrunding the derby s theme. This packet cntains infrmatin yu will need t prepare yur unit. Be sure t read this packet carefully, as there are many changes year t year. Please remember t fllw the instructins belw when planning t arrive at the derby.! Yu may pre- register fr the derby. See page 1 fr details f hw t pre- register. On derby day, it is planned that yu will be able t mve thrugh registratin faster.! Medical frms are lnger be cllected at registratin. Unit leaders ill retain the frms.! Nte that the Klndike Derby start time is 8:30 am. S that ur staff can get in t pen the statins n time, please plan n arriving clser t the start time t help ease cngestin. Registratin will nt pen until 8:00 am, s being there at 6 am will gain n advantage.! The derby is a very large prgram, with ver 1,000 participants, staff, and visitrs, filling the camp t capacity. This request includes thse units staying in camp fr the weekend. Our parking staff has the authrity t restrict the number f vehicles ging back the camp rad. Derby staff will be given pririty in parking in camp.! If derby traffic is backed ut n the highway waiting t enter the camp rad, PLEASE pull ff the rad as far as pssible, get in line, and put yur hazard warning flashers n. 5 Iditard The Great Race f Mercy Many peple regard the premise f a Klndike Derby (nt just urs!) as lsely based n the Klndike Gld Rush f But there is anther lesser-knwn premise, taken frm a race nearly a century ag, in which the win was saving lives. This year s derby will tell the stry f that race, knwn as The Great Race f Mercy. It is a stry f dgged determinatin and f herism, f bth man and dg! It was als the last great Hurrah fr a mde f transprtatin sn t be rendered bslete by the airplane and snwmbile. In the early days f 1925 an epidemic f diphtheria threatened the village f Nme, Alaska. Dr. Curtis Welch first thught it was 4

6 tnsillitis, but after several children died, he realized it was mre serius. All f nrthwest Alaska was sn put under quarantine, and ne millin dses f diphtheria anti-txin were called fr. With Nme just belw the Arctic Circle, and the harsh winter cmbined t make reaching the twn nearly impssible. After cnsidering and rejecting several means, it was decided the nly way t get the serum t Nme was by dgsled teams. While the serum was gathered and shipped t Alaska, 20 lcal dgsled teams were runded up and made ready. On January 27, the first team left Nenana with the first shipment f serum. Alng the way, the serum was passed frm team t team, which ran day and night in a race t get t Nme befre the medicine spiled. Running thrugh sub-zer temperatures, raging winds, and exhaustin, the teams pushed n, and arrived in Nme via the Iditard Trail n February 2. The mushers had cvered ver 600 miles in just 7 days. The village was saved, and deaths were kept t a minimum. The stry f the race was perfect fr the new medium f radi, and the mushers and their dgs became natinal heres. The final lead dg int Nme was Balt, and a statue f him was erected in Central Park in New Yrk City t hnr all the dgs in the race. Balt became as famus as anther dg f the era, Rin Tin Tin, thugh many claim that the true her dg shuld have been Tg, wh cvered mre miles in the wrst part f the race. Tday, the spirit f the Great Race lives n in the Iditard Trail Dg Sled Race... and in this year s Juniata Valley Cuncil Klndike Derby. Hpe t see yu there!!! MUSH!!!! 5

7 Registratin, Check- in & Trail Registratin Infrmatin: 1. PRE- REGISTRATION - Units may pre- register fr the derby. See page 1 fr details and fee structure. Yu may als register at the derby. 2. REGISTRATION FORMS - Submit the cmpleted KLONDIKE DERBY REGISTRATION FORM and prper TEAM ROSTER (Scut r Webels), bund in this bk, t the Service Center fr Pre- Registratin r at registratin at the derby. 3. EXTRA FORMS are available n the website. D nt use frms frm previus years. Check- In Infrmatin: 1. DERBY HEADQUARTERS - is lcated in the Dining Hall. Check- In pens at 8:00 am. 2. INFORMATION PACKET - Each unit will be issued a packet f infrmatin at check- in, including the Instructin & Screbk, and map f the trail 3. EXTRA PATCHES may be purchased at the Trading Pst table. 4. HEALTH FORMS - Unit leaders MUST have health frms fr all participants. ALL YOUTH Use Part A and B. Leaders are t retain these recrds. Registratin will n lnger cllect them. Derby and Trail Infrmatin: 1. NO PETS - - It is cuncil plicy that pets are nt permitted in camp r at cuncil events. {Certified guide dgs and "seeing- eye" dgs are permitted per the Americans with Disabilities Act.} 2. COMPETITION BEGINS - Teams start in grups f 10 at 2- minute intervals, beginning at 8:30 am. 3. COMPETITION ENDS - at 3:30 pm. Any teams still n trail at that time are t finish up. 4. DROPPING OUT - If ne f yur teams drps ut, ntify Headquarters immediately. 5. PUT EQUIPMENT IN BACKPACKS - All equipment must be packed int backpacks and carried n the sled until yu finish. Items t large fr backpacks need nt be packed in backpacks. 6. SCOUT OR WEBELOS HANDBOOK - Yu may use yur handbk, unless specified therwise. 7. LEADERS/PARENTS OBSERVE ONLY - Unit leaders and ther adults, althugh encuraged t bserve, MAY NOT help r hinder any teams. The penalty is disqualificatin f their unit s teams. Leaders accmpanying Webels teams may help shrt f ding the prblem fr the bys. 8. PENALTY FOR NOT HAVING STATED EQUIPMENT - There is a scre penalty fr nt having equipment stated in the equipment list. 9. TIME ON THE TRAIL - is nt figured in the team scre. 10. FREE COCOA - Each participant will receive a tken as a suvenir f the derby. Present the tken at the kitchen fr a FREE cup f cca fllwing the finishing f the team. 11. WAX RUNNERS in case f n snw. REMEMBER, the derby runs - - SNOW OR NO SNOW! 12. NO WHEELS Wheels are nt permitted n the sleds. 13. NO TRAIL MARKERS - The trail is nt marked. Statins are lcated at r near camp landmarks, such as cabins, campsites, r activity areas. A map is prvided in the Infrmatin. 6

8 Team and Sled Specs Team Specificatins: ALL TEAMS: 1. Ideally, teams shuld cnsist f natural patrls r dens frm within their units. This allws the patrl r den t succeed r fail based n the strength r weakness f its members. Quality patrls r dens exhibit teamwrk t cmplete a task. 2. Teams may cnsist f any number f Scuts/Webels between 3 and 12. Hwever, it is recmmended that teams be made up f between 6 t 8 team members. 3. Unit leaders are respnsible fr making sure their bys are adequately clthed fr the derby. In the event f inclement weather r a cld expsure emergency, teams r individuals can g t any ne f the buildings in camp t get warm. Units in camp are asked t shw Scut Spirit by allwing cld participants t warm up in their cabin. MALAMUTE DIVISION (fr Webels): 4. Malamute teams cnsist f Webels dens. 5. Webels team members MUST be registered as Webels. Bys wh have already crssed ver t a Scut unit MAY NOT participate as a Webels. 6. Webels teams must have Tw (2) adults and can have ptinally ne den chief with each team. They may wrk with the team shrt f ding the prblem fr them. 7. In rder t create a level playing field, additinal adults/parents may accmpany the team as bservers, but may nt assist in any way at the statins r n the trail. IDITAROD DIVISION (Fr Scuts, Varsity Teams, Venture Crews, etc.): 8. Iditard Teams cnsist f Scuts enrlled in a Scut Trp, Varsity Team, Venture Crew, r ther prgrams fr yuth age 11 t 18. Age limits fr Special Needs units, Learning fr Life, etc. are subject t the requirements t participate in these units. Webels teams may nt enrll in this divisin. Sled Specificatins: MALAMUTE DIVISION (fr Webels): 1. Yur chice f design: Webels Sled - RECOMMENDED- 4-1/2 feet lng by 18 inches wide. Scut Sled feet lng by 18 inches wide. 2. Wheels are nt permitted n the sleds. Wax runners in the event f n snw. 3. The design and decratin f the sled is up t yu. A generic sled plan is available upn request. 4. The sled must display team name (flag r lg), pack number and Webels emblem. The emblem may be a flag, banner, sticker, r painted n the sled. IDITAROD DIVISION (Fr Scuts, Varsity Teams, Venture Crews, etc.): 1. The sled must be at least 6 feet lng and 18 inches wide. 2. Wheels are nt permitted n the sleds. Wax runners in the event f n snw. 3. The design and decratin f the sled is up t yu. A generic sled plan is available. 4. Sled must display; patrl flag r lg painted n sled; and unit number. 7

9 Scring and Awards Statin Scring: 1. SCORING - is based ttally n pints earned at the statins. Each team's scre is added, and the tp seven teams win awards. 2. Each statin is wrth 100 pints, with rare exceptins. 3. While each statin scre is based n perfrmance criteria, the statin mayrs have the judgment t deduct pints fr bvius lack f teamwrk. 4. Teams have nly ne chance t cmplete a prblem. 5. Teams need nt be present at the awards ceremny t win. 6. TIE- BREAKERS - are used nly with the place teams. In case f a tie, the fllwing prcedures apply: a. If bth (r all if three r mre) teams are present at the awards ceremny, a questin based n the derby is given t each team. If all answers are crrect r all incrrect, anther questin is given. This cntinues until ne team gives a crrect answer and the ther team(s) gives an incrrect answer. The winning team is given 1 pint. If multiple teams, incrrect answers drp frm running, and will be placed in reverse rder. b. If nly ne team is present, then a questin is given. If crrect, the team is awarded ne pint t break the tie. c. If n teams are present, then a cin tss is used t break a tie. d. In n instance can a team "bump" their way t a higher place. That is, if a team, in breaking a tie by the additin f the extra pint, ties with the next higher team, then it is nt cnsidered a tie. 7. Statin scres are cnsidered final and unchangeable at the derby headquarters. ONLY the mayr issuing the scre may change statin scres. If a scre is entered in errr, yu must return t the statin and talk t the mayr in questin. If yu still feel that yu did nt reslve the dispute, yu may appeal t either f the Derby Chairmen. Hwever, the chairmen will nt change a scre withut verificatin frm the statin in questin. NO EXCEPTIONS. Place and Special Awards: 1. All awards will be custm- designed plaques that can be hung n a wall. 2. NOTE: It is derby plicy that the sled judges have full discretinary cntrl ver the judging, and establish their wn criteria. They are as impartial as is pssible. The derby chairman CANNOT and WILL NOT change the results f the judges. PERIOD. IDITAROD DIVISION: PLACES: Tp 7 teams. 10 Malamute DIVISION - FOR WEBELOS SPECIAL INFORMATION: 1. Webels Divisin teams have a chice f tw sled designs: Full size Scut sled, r the scaled- dwn smaller Webels sled. Wheels are nt permitted n the sleds. 2. Each Webels team is REQUIRED t have TWO respnsible adults and OPTIONALLY ONE Den Chief participate with the sled. They may help the team shrt f actually ding the prblem fr them. NOTE: T create a level playing field, additinal adults/parents/den chiefs may accmpany the team as bservers nly, but may nt participate with r help the team in any way. Remember that teamwrk is what the derby is all abut. All participants are t have an pprtunity t wrk n each prblem. 3. Webels teams are nt permitted t register r cmpete in the Iditard Divisin. Due t staffing r the nature f the prblem, Webels teams may participate at a cuple f the same statins as Iditard Teams, but are scred separately with a different prblem. Webels teams may, after cmpleting their divisin, visit the ther Iditard statins t bserve nly. 4. Due t liability insurance and Natinal BSA plicy, nly registered Scuts and Scuters 11 years f age r lder will be permitted t fire shtguns r 22 rifles, r thrw the tmahawks. Webels WILL NOT BE PERMITTED t fire these guns/thrw tmahawks whether registered r nt. 5. Many Webels prblems are taken directly frm the handbk. Bys participating can have their leader sign ff these requirements. WEBELOS LEADERS: The Klndike Derby is ne f the best ways t encurage yur bys t enter By Scuting. 11 Malamute DIVISION - FOR WEBELOS ACTIVITY AREAS: The fllwing utline will help yur team better prepare fr the statin prblems at the Klndike Derby in the Malamute Divisin. Part f yur scre will be based n hw well yur team wrks tgether. COOKING Be able t d the fllwing: " Prepare and ck a breakfast r dinner cnsisting f: Breakfast: Meat (r meat substitute); pancakes, French tast, biscuits, eggs, r equivalent item; and ht tea r cca. Serve with a fruit (need nt be cked). Nte: Brwn and Serve sausage is permitted fr scring. Dinner: Meat (r meat substitute); ne vegetable; dessert; bread; and ht tea r cca. Nte: Ht dgs are permitted fr Webels. The dessert need nt be cked. " NOTES: The cking statin prblem dubles as their meal n the trail. Enugh fd must be cked t serve everyne in yur team. The chice f the menu is up t yu, but it must be cked ON- SITE. The list f acceptable meats can be fund n the Klndike Derby page n the Cuncil Website. The tw adults and ne den chief n the team may assist the bys with cking their meal withut penalty. Yu may serve anything beynd the requirements withut penalty. Cking fires will be prvided at the statin. Yu will nt need t build a fire. After cking, prperly dispse f yur garbage, clean utensils, and leave a clean cking area.
