4 Commodore Sterling Lau Hi Folks! As everyone in our club knows, the keystone to the success of Hawaii Yacht Club lies in the willingness of our members to volunteer their efforts in the accomplishment of worthwhile goals. One of those goals was recognized as the restoration of the upper deck Ladies Room by members Tim Ryan and Bob Cochrane. Both members saw the necessity for the work to be done and offered their skills with which to do it. I accompanied them to the Ladies Room and saw that in sizing up the job, they didn t use special tools to figure out what they were going to do. They simply looked at the walls, the ceiling, mirror, lighting, toilets, partitions, and floor. In addressing each item they would say a few words as to what was necessary, where they could get such item (which might even have been in the possession of another member), and how they would install it. We walked out of the Ladies Room 15 minutes later with most of the plan in their heads. This occurred a little more than 2 months ago and the restroom is already in use. I saw Tim and Bob carrying new partitions into the Board Room yesterday. I believe that they had been waiting patiently for those so that they could finally apply the Coup de gras to their fine project. The following members were identified by Tim and Bob as other fantastic volunteers who jumped into the project to help their brothers to get it done: Jim Byxbee, Marcia Anderson, Richard Tatz, Tom Bashaw, Jim Sharp (Aloha Counter Tops), Jim Schmidt, Steve Stock, Linell Kam, Steven Hiestand. Aloha, and thank you all. Another big-time volunteer walks around the club dressed in humble 1960s Surf Jams, but like a Pied Piper accomplishes the most difficult job of recruiting new regular members into the club virtually all by himself (close to 12 so far this year). This feat is only one of Rear Commodore of Power, Robbie Santanello s vast array of talents within his quiver. Besides promoting the HYC Fishing Tournaments and bringing revenue and business interest into the Club, I recently saw him get down on his hands and knees to epoxy-coat and paint the Aloha Dock to make it safer for the Jr. Sailors, and to make it last until it can be replaced just prior to the next Transpac. The other night, Mr. Santanello sponsored a huge Cast Party which included movie star George Clooney, with all of the glitz and glamour that these events entail on the lower deck, QUIETLY, until upper deck musician Ron Miyashiro and all of his retinue of singers had fulfilled their services to our club and left the premises. Then the Cast Party really began. I had remained on the upper deck to assure that East didn t meet West as our By-Laws required, but I know that HYC earned excellent revenue and that our more mature members at the upper bar wore huge grins on their faces and appeared to be quite garrulous in their conversations about the supporting cast and their fashions. That is another story and Robbie Santanello would probably be happy to tell you all about it. Ain t volunteers great! 4 Sterling Lau Commodore

5 Vice Commodore Patti Naiyoke Hello Everyone! The month of May started off with the popular Don Conover and singers at HYC. The bar fills up with members and guests who like the easy going ambiance of a Saturday evening at the harbor, with the sounds of the piano and talented amateur singers providing great entertainment. If this scenario appeals to you, check the HYC entertainment calendar on the upper and lower deck walls of the club for Conover s next performance date or your HYC Activities & Events ing. The HYC Cinco De Mayo celebration was planned and hosted by member Marsha Lewis, who decorated the upper deck of the club and set the wheels in motion for the enjoyment of our members, who revere this event as one of their favorites. Aku Compehos provided the musical background for the event, while Chef Alfredo provided his special Mexican favorites for those with tastes which forage South of the Border. Thanks again Marsha! Mother s Day Brunch was built around the time-honored traditionalist values and expectations of Patty Naiyoke, the General Patton of events such as Valentines Day, Easter, and Mother s Day. Everything has to be just right, or it s not going to happen at all. Well, it did go off in splendid manner. Patty and her friends had the tables, coverings, napkins, and decorations set out wonderfully. The buffet offered all of the special breakfast foods found at finer eateries, but was topped off in this instance with a crispy skinned roasted porkster, local style, on a platter. Chef Alfredo kept saying I cooked it myself, I cooked it myself, as he strutted by the platter. He was as proud as a brand new father. The HYC tradition of Staff Commodores handing out roses and pouring bottomless glasses of champagne to diners was scrupulously observed in this case, and was carried out by Staff Commodores Howie Mednick, Frank Lange, Bob Heidrich, Hank Mulligan, and Commodore Sterling Lau. It was a peaceful, classical HYC Mothers Day, which faded into a quiet afternoon to the strains of soft guitars by 20 Degrees North. Thank you Patty. Music coming up in June will include another session of Johnny Rock, who got the crowd crazy with desire last Friday, May 21st, Green Flash, Ghost Band, and others. Saturday night bands will also include the Conover Singers, 20 Degrees, and perennial favorite, Ron Miyashiro. Aloha! Patti Naiyoke Vice Commodore HYC 5

8 Rear Commodore for Power Robbie Santanello Fishing Hi Folks! Well if you ve been around the club lately you have seen a lot of changes. The Aloha dock is starting to looooook pretty nice, good job Curtis Collins and the structural caps of the dock are looking great, thanks to George Longshore and his welder. The big thing this month was the Wrap party for the movie The Descendents with George Clooney and Robert Forester, quite a crowd; the Producer was nice enough to open the party to HYC members. Ted Trimmer, Steve Heistand and Linell Kam said that the entertainment was fantastic, four separate bands entertained us, I saw Doug Allen and Tom Bashaw also enjoying themselves and Al Bento dancing the night away, he told me it was the party of the decade. But the best entertainment of the night was provided by George Clooney he decided that Fred Samuels needed a bar back at the lower bar and jumped in and gave help, needless to say Fred really enjoyed the help. George told me when he left that if he didn t have some new movie to shoot that he would wash glasses for Fred any time. The most important part of it all was that everyone both HYC members and the movie cast had a great time. Guess I do throw a pretty good party after all!!!! The money that we raised for the club will be well used to help with our monetary needs in the coming months. In closing I would like to thank a few people that have helped in the past few months with the clubs repair of the Aloha Dock and 8 Above _Robbie, Clooney & Calvin

9 Right _ George Clooney & Fred, working the bar at HYC the clubs social events. First off George Longshore for his hard labor welding on the Aloha Dock you saved us a lot of money! Another is Ed Osborne for the countless hours of hard work you have given freely I will never be able to repay you for your kind consideration that you have given this club. Last and not least Calvin Madea of Steinlager his unbelievable generosity to the club made it possible for us to succeed beyond our wildest dreams so thanks Calvin! What s amazing all of these people have been members less than a year and contribute so much. I am very proud to say that I brought them to HYC and that they make a conscious effort on a daily basis to help HYC and that they care so much. Please to all members come join us for our fishing tournaments or our parties in the future. Remember bait on your hooks and hooks in the water. 10 Junior Sailing Scott Melander Aloha! Thanks to all the sailing assistants who made the spring season so much fun! Laura Hughes, Aneka Lizotte, Tristan Stenek, Ailana Warren, and Jessica Rohr really made the season great. The sailors who completed the spring program were: Kubik Beckett Tomas Beckett Dylan Adolpho Taylor Freitas Malia Selman Antoine Fratzke Akira Kumagai Ruby Shuman Mallory Kracher Orion Helligar Alicia Ward Kukii Falahee Conor Gilson Mitchell Woodrow Dennis Kumagai We had a very windy Laser District Regatta and it was also the qualifier for the US Sailing Single Handed Nationals for the ODay Trophy. HYC sailing instructor Laura Hughes qualified for the nationals in Florida in July. the day for first and second. As the day went on the wind increased in velocity, on the start of the sixth race the RC clocked a puff of 30 The regatta was held on Saturday May 8 in waters off of Waikiki in very windy conditions. The breeze was knots with large shifts and lots of current running right to left. Seven races were held with courses 15 to 30 minutes in length. Thanks to PRO Ted Miller with help from Jeff Hossellman, and Woody Woodrow. Safety boat drivers were Jessica Rohr and Roscoe Fowler. Congratulations to all the competitors for sailing in such challenging conditions. The first race the pin was favored but there was also a big right shift so both sides worked for the fleet. The double windward leeward course helped spread out the fleet. Morgan Merrill and Lance Miller were battling most of 10

This made for tough upwinds and lots of capsizes downwind. There were several chicken jibes at the leeward mark, most of which were good tactical decisions. The last race of a triangle course was great as the reaches were really fun. Good luck to Lance and Laura at the nationals. It was a fantastic regatta with wonderful conditions. The racing was very tight and came down to the last few hundred yards on the course to determine a winner. This year s race had conditions in the 15-20kt range with higher gusts and a decent sea state. We thank all the participants for coming out and racing. We had 10 boats (6 A and 4 B) come out. Rabbit Island Results: Scott Bradley s CaZan sailed a hard fought race and battled their way to a great victory in PH A. Runners up in PH A were Bondi Tram and On The Edge respectively. Introducing HYC s Morning Coffee Klatch: All of our HYC members who live close by or on their boats in the harbor or on property should know about HYC s morning coffee klatch. The lower deck of our club begins stirring around 0530 as early risers and not so early risers gather to talk story, read the morning newspapers, drink coffee, crank up the computers for our free internet WI- FI connection, watch the news and stock market reports on TV, snack on whatever goodies good Samaritans occasionally drop off for all to enjoy, and get our body clocks ready to face whatever the day may bring. You are certainly welcome and invited to join us, just walk in and say aloha and you will get to meet some of the regulars around the club. 14

15 The coffee pot is located in the galley but as it is a self-supporting venture, we ask everyone to donate $0.25 per cup - in U.S. currency of course. Cups are provided, you will find them over the sink - however, as it is a self-service galley we ask that you wash your cups and put them away when you are finished. Liquor Commission Rule Reminder As a private club, the HYC also must comply with two other regulations. One of them is that no beverages may be removed from the club premises - that includes coffee, soft drinks, and even water. Along the same lines, we are not allowed to drink our own alcoholic beverages while on the club premises. Whatever alcohol is consumed in the club or on the club grounds must be purchased from the bar. Nothing, however, prevents you from enjoying your libations while aboard your own yacht, or from transporting unopened containers from outside to your yacht. The other rule we should mention is that we operate a self-service bar, so please bus your own table and return all bar glasses to the bar - even after dinner. HYC loves Animals However, animals are not allowed on club premises other than taking them from outside the club to your yacht, or visa-versa. Please do not tie them to trees, or otherwise secure them around the club. No Soap allowed in the Harbor It is always nice to be able to hose the salt off your vessel when you come in from sea and you are welcome to do so here. You are also welcome to wash off your foul weather gear, life jackets, safety lines, etc. We do ask, though, that you remove them from your lifelines and store them away when they are dry. If you have not noticed, the Coast Guard has posted signs through out the facility warning members not to discharge detergent in the harbor. If you are caught you will be fined. Nick Club Manager

16 Cruising & Voyaging Patti Salomon Aloha Cruisers! Left_Jack Durham Time seems to go by so quickly, and this April it was time once again to commemorate the 4th Anniversary of the founding of the HYC Cruising &Voyaging Society. So on the evening of April 25, 2010 we gathered on the Upper Deck of the Hawaii Yacht Club for an evening with lots of camaraderie, food, door prizes and fun for everyone. And, as we do each year, we honored our Cruiser of the Year. We enjoyed pupus and a buffet dinner, all catered in for the event. And of course there was cake! The tables filled up fast; in all we were 40 members, all laughing and eating in the soft evening air. Many Thanks are owed to the generosity and helpfulness of our members, who responded to the call for assistance. Our members are the best! They offered their time and money, donated door prizes, and brought foliage and flowers to make the tables festive. They stepped up to help with the set-up of the dining room and buffet table, and then the clean-up afterward. The old adage is very true; many hands do make light work! Now, to the Cruiser of the Year. Every year the staff of our web site hyccruisingsociety. com selects a society member for the Cruiser of the Year Award, based on that member s dedication to the ideals of our society. promoting cruising as a safe, fun and environmentally responsible recreation. Our Cruiser of the Year for 2009 is Tom Gebhardt, an individual who has given an extraordinary amount of his time and effort to boating in general and acknowledged for his always-ready enthusiasm, and his good humor. On May 20th the Cruising Society hosted a well-attended presentation by Kaneohe YC member Jack Durham about his experience in 2009 on the Princess Taiping, a Chinese 16

After more than 50 days at sea that voyage ended tragically when she was run down by a freighter in the dark of night and left adrift, less than thirty miles from their destination port. Fortunately no one was lost and all eleven crew members were rescued by the Taiwanese Coast Guard after about 5 hours, thanks in part to the EPIRB which Jack had thoughtfully taken with him. Jack did a terrific job telling the story of that voyage and sharing his experience with us. Our next event is the Around Oahu group cruise over Memorial Day Weekend. We hope for a good turnout and pray to the Weather Gods for favorable winds and seas! More details in next month s Bulletin. SeaYa out there! 20 Honorary Member Franklin Bamboo Opperman Exemplary and e x t r a o r d i n a r y accomplishments of Hawaii Yacht Club Member Franklin Bamboo Opperman Born Nov 17, 1924 Joined the Hawaii Yacht Club in years of membership Golden Marlin 1 was purchased from a consortium of owners, such as Dr, Flowers and Bruce Carter, of Lets Go Fishing. The Pre- Golden Marlin vessel sank during a hurricane in Kewalo Basin. The boat was raised in 1983 by Bamboo Opperman and refurbished by Tim Rhea and Monti Opperman. It had a brief history in fishing...tr and Monti were the original characters seen today in The Deadliest Catch. In 1985, Frank Bamboo Opperman dedicated the Golden Marlin 100 percent to the combined HYC and WYC race committee programs. Golden Marlin continued this dedicated service for nearly 20 years when in 2004, Golden Marlin 1/ Frank Bamboo Opperman, finished its long history as the committee boat for the Off- Shore events which were designed to compensate for the loss of Kenwood. Bamboo Opperman donated the Golden Marlin, a 50 ft. Haole Power Boat to WYC with a built in allowance to cover maintenance. Golden Marlin 1 was eventually sold and the dollars were then donated to both Junior sailing programs Clipper Cup - Kenwood Cup The Golden Marlin / Frank Bamboo Opperman was the committee boat for the vast majority of the Clipper Cup / Kenwood cup races and this is where he gained a great deal of his international notoriety. Golden Marlin was indeed an ICON on the international racing scene. 2Golden Marlin was a highly versatile vessel on both the start and finish lines. Golden Marlin required not only a crew, but a great crew. The prime reason is that most exclusive race courses are set in relatively shallow waters, thus considered a simple task. Americas cup is totally different. One should be aboard the Golden Marlin when you are setting a finish line in feet of water. You have various conditions which consists of waves, counter currents and winds. You are on one side of the line and AL Bento is on the opposite side. You drop your weights and up wind, you have yachts from France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan and the US blazing down the course. You wait for Al Bento to indicate that his respective weights have hit bottom,. You cut, hold a line that is over 1000 ft., and with your HAND, tie a bowline to a second set of counter weights. Over goes both the counter weights, marks and you wait with your fingers crossed. Bento s mark stands straight and the second mark reaches for the sky. Its a perfect set and within 3-4 minutes you have yachts from around the world, with full spinnakers, flying across the finish line. It is an adventure that few will have the chance to experience. Bamboo Opperman was the Skipper who developed the finest Kenwood cup race committee that consisted of Tim Rhea, Nancy Mulford, Bob and Sq Heidrick, Mellette H.Smith, Munch, Monti Opperman, Jim Ferris, Miles Anderson, Sandy Bell, and Victor Redding. Ken Morrison was the Race Committee Chair for Kenwood Cup and he was always amazed as to FT Bamboo Opperman abilities to maintain a constant hold on both the finish and start lines during Kenwood events. This was an absolute must requirement, otherwise Ken Morrison was not able to detect an over early when the field was over-loading one side of the line. I will never forget filming the very close start of a Kenwood race while a Japanese yacht nearly T-Boned the Golden Marlin. Hawaii Yacht Club and Waikiki Yacht Club Golden Marlin / Frank Bamboo Opperman was additionally the main committee boat for nearly 20 years of joint racing with both the HYC and WYC. Each race required courses to be established and marks to be set The Golden Marlin and Frank Bamboo Opperman was always acting as the lead 20

21 committee boat regardless if it was around Oahu, Around Molokai, or merely off shore triangles. I recall several weekend when we were the only committee boat on the course, because other yachts had mechanical or crew problems, During this period of time, if we ever needed a HYC Rear Cmdr of Sail, the first question each nominee would asked was... Will Bamboo Opperman, and the Golden Marlin remain on station. During these wonderful years, we had a marvelous group of Rear Commodores of sails such as Lynn Silva, Charles Barclay, Hank Mulligan, Sherry Vann, Tim Rhea, and others. Many served multiple terms. Americas Cup Bamboo Opperman was additionally one of the prime contributors to the overall construction of the Abracadabra, which was the first Americas Cub Yacht to be built in Hawaii. Length 80 feet with a weight of 50,000 lbs. Frank Bamboo Opperman contributed in the following manner. Golden Marlin surveyed Ko Olina Harbor for hull clearance Designed, built with Tim Rhea a massive oven, used to bake each of two, 80 ft. hulls When man power was low or non existent... Bamboo and his crew stepped up to the plate. When tools could not be found... Bamboo opened his tool box. Golden Marlin First Mate, Tim Rhea at 3:00 am in the morning stepped the 114 ft. mast, just hours prior to Bamboo Opperman towing the Abracadabra to Honolulu Harbor such that she could be introduced to the world. Bamboo Fed the entire Abracadabra construction crew on numerous occasions Bamboo Provided heavy equipment such as fork lifts and transportation Golden Marlin was the work horse of the Abracadabra construction crew. Funerals Bamboo Opperman and Golden Marlin 1 were additionally asked by many friends, families and guests to use Golden Marlin as a platform for spreading the ashes of loved ones. I remember several occasions, when at the last moment, Bamboo would call his crew and ask to assist with another family who s last wish was to visit a special spot off the shores of Waikiki. Fund Raising Bamboo Opperman was additionally one of the most well-know jokesters of all times and these skills were readily used to raise funds for projects such as: Cup and Junior Sailing Program Hawaii Yacht Club Race Week I recently received an from Phililp Katzman that stated the following: Aloha Miles, Sadly the Lahaina Race Week no longer continues. We tried again last year to revive it by having the Molokai Race. Only 3 boats entered and not all were in the same class (2 A, 1 B). It seems that people are too busy these days to take a week off for racing during the summer. Currently the only races are the 1 day of Lahaina Lights (offshores) and the Lahaina Return. Mahalo, Phillip Katzman Frank Bamboo Opperman and Golden Marlin 1 for several years had the same crew that participated in Lahaina race week, which consisted of the following events: Night race to Honolulu to Molokai Party at the Molokai Yacht Club Race to Napili Bay Maui 2 Days of Lahaina Off Shores Awards Banquet at Lahaina Yacht Club Lahaina to Honolulu Return Race Bamboo Opperman additionally volunteered to take the outside course of Molokai and act as both the communication and safety vessel for the return portion of race week. This was the prime reason we were always referred to as Golden Marlin FIRST boat out and the LAST boat in. Each year at the Lahaina Return start line... Golden Marlin and crew, would check off anywhere from yachts. Each year First Mate Tim Rhea, made his famous Fried Rice while allowing the aroma to slide across the START LINE Golden Marlin always posted a famous menu which stated... Free Beer Tomorrow. Richard Witte will always be remembered by his tennis family as warm, friendly and welcoming. Names of his yachting, fishing, and tennis family are too numerous to mention. They will certainly say in unison...aloha Richard Witte...aloha...we love you. We will always love you for your genuine kindness.
