4 Commodore Howie Mednick Hi Folks! Once again, I d like to convey my Aloha to you all for the support and enthusiasm you have shown in welcoming me as your Commodore for I will keep your hopes and expectations uppermost in my mind as I cooperate with my fellow Flag officers, Governors. Club Staff, Committee volunteers, and our membership as we work together in behalf of the Hawaii Yacht Club. During the Installation ceremony at our Membership Meeting this past week, I uttered the same words that I used during the planning of the HYC preparations for TRANSPAC 09. I said it at the beginning of every meeting we had, and say it again at this time: It s not about you, and it s not about me. It s all about the Hawaii Yacht Club, and what we can do to make it successful. Having realized this, we can go on and not worry about our ego s and our individual personalities getting in our way because we will focus on a common goal. The improvement and success of our House! I m very optimistic about our prospects this year. Yes it will be challenging indeed, but I believe that our members are ready to meet these issues and move the Club forward during the course of this year. Our Flag Officers are definitely movers and are all determined to make a difference. Further, we have the impetus and spirit to make good things happen with volunteer leaders who have the wherewithal to do so, steadily stepping forward to take on key Committee positions. There s plenty of room for more Committee members and I urge those of you who are tired of staring at the four walls and wondering if you too could have an exciting life, to see me and I will saddle you up and get your horse moving. There s no one to stop you, and there are mentors to help you. Our reconstituted Board of Governors have been reinforced with 2 new members who will be adding to the experience and fair thinking to keep the club and its membership on an even keel. Yes, this year will involve all of the volunteer participation any member could want, as well as many new ideas and activities for having fun at our club. So get involved in the club activities of your choice, and we will see you at Your Club. Sterling Lau Commodore 4

5 Vice Commodore Patty Naiyoke I finally made it; I am your Vice Commodore of HYC. Have we got a great year planned for all the members. Of course we have to have all of you volunteer to help make the club profitable. 10 Scott Melander Jr.. Sailing The last event of the year was the 420 States in Kaneohe and the wind did not cooperate. It was very light and the sailors ended up making some interesting sun shades with the main and spinnaker. Three races were sailed with some light wind techniques that were amazing to see. Congratulations to Dylan Ale and Rinchen Harrsion for winning the event. It was good to see Jesse Winterbottom out with Ailana Warren and Mitchell Woodrow and Katherine Hughes. The end of the year banquet was on Dec. 5 and its nice to see people dressed up for the night. Winners in the jr. division were: El Toro Club Champs Gold Fleet: Mitchell Woodrow and Conor Gilson Silver Fleet: Mika Geringer, Tommy Hite, Mallory Kracher, Taylor Frietas, and Malia Selman George Pelgrim Perpetual for Most Improved Junior: Alicia Ward Valerie Hanna for Jr. Sailor of the Year: Morgan Merrill Thanks to all the sailing instructor staff: Ailana Warren, Laura Hughes, Victor Pulsifer, Tristan Stenek, and Jessica Rohr. Thanks every year to my advisors for the program: Gordy and Marilyn Fowler. Thanks to the flag officers, board members, and HYC members for a great year. 11 Fleet Captain Bill Beadle Cruising & Voyaging Below _Cruisers with Natasza What a fun year! Cruises galore, educational meetings, great presentations by cruisers, jam packed Sunday brunches and several parties made for an exceptional year. The Cruising and Voyaging Society is a group of people who don t like politics or structure. Everyone participates at their own level... Come to brunch, come to meetings, give a presentation, coordinate a cruise, take your own boat or crew on Above _Circumnavigator Natasza Caban someone else s boat, lots of options for fun. There were seven cruises this year by one to eleven boats and one to thirty crew, depending on the destination. Anchorages included Hickam Harbor, Pokai Bay, Makua, the Sandbar, Haleiwa, Hanalei, Pinnacles, Manele Bay, Makena, Lahaina, Hale O Lono and the Waikiki Bight was the best year yet for participation and range of travel. The monthly meetings were well attended for a very good reason - Great presentations and workshops! Skipper Nelson Liu of the Princess Tai Ping, Kaiulani Murphy navigator of the Hokuleia, Dave Cooper of Swan Song, Natasza Caban of Tanasza, Mike Salomon on anchoring, Dotty Bates on monk seals, Skip Riley s Yachtsman Series with Rick Shema (The Weather Guy) on Hurricanes, etc., etc. The lower deck was full on several occasions, with over fifty people in attendance at several of the presentations. Just this past month we had over fifty in attendance for Natasca Caban. Natasca gave a very entertaining slide show presentation on her solo circumnavigation. This trip made her the youngest female Polish national to circumnavigate and she was very proud of the fact that she flew the Polish flag in so many diverse and remote ports. Congratulations and mahalo to Natasza for a great presentation! The CVS First Sunday Brunch brought over two hundred and seventy customers to the galley this past year. At our Anniversary Party in April, we had over thirty-five on the lower deck for a great dinner party. Every meeting function creates a large demand on the barkeeps (according to my credit card company and Kevin). The Cruising and Voyaging Above _Bill Beadle, Patti & Mike Salomon Society is, and will continue to be, a great asset to the Hawaii Yacht Club. It has been a delight to be the Fleet Captain for the Cruising and Voyaging Society this past year. Many people stepped up to coordinate cruises, arrange presentations, organize parties and events, too many to thank in this report! Two people are deserving of special recognition Mike and Patti Salomon are the heart and soul of the Hawaii Yacht Club Cruising and Voyaging Society. They are webmasters, audio visual technicians, photographers and administrators of the group. Mike and Patti made it happen! Steve Dixon is taking over for 2010 and will raise the bar for leadership of our leaderless group. Come join us and add your energy to our fun times! 11

12 Barbara Silvey Special Events Happy New Year Members! The Special Events Team would like to welcome our new club officers and members. HYC offers a wide range of events for your participation. Please join us in the following: JR./KEIKI FISHING TOURNAMENT will once again be held January 31,2010; this is a joint venture between HYC and WYC. Children from both clubs are encouraged to participate and are welcome to bring a friend. Under privileged children from Palama Settlement and Kuhio Park Terrace will be invited. A new addition to the tournament will be the Police Activities League program known as PAL. This program brings the media, prizes, snow cone machine, volunteers and of course children. Anglers start out at the Hawaii Yacht Club for a fishing and boating safety briefing instructions, board boats volunteered by club members and boaters, depart for fishing off the Waikiki Shore (this is not BIG Game fishing), return for weigh-in which most fish are weighted in on a postage meter scale. As fishing results are calculated anglers are shuttled across the channel to Waikiki Yacht Club for swim relays, a BBQ, and a BIG trophy presentation. Every angler is a Winner and leaves with a prize and a smile on his/her face. See the Jr../Keiki Fishing Tournament Flyer for more information. Rods, reels and life jackets are provide by the clubs; although if you have your own, please feel free to bring them. The event needs to replace rods and reels this year, and we are asking for donations. Contact Staff Commodore Al Bento at for more information or to make a donation. There is no cost to you or your child; although prizes and food donations are always welcome. This event has held as many as 210 children. If you and/or a friend own a boat, the committee would welcome boat participation; mooring arrangements can be made with the clubs port captain. If you are interested in having your child/children participate, contact Mey at the HYC Office or Barbara Silvey at to reserve space. The committee is looking forward to another successful event.
