4 Commodore Howie Mednick Aloha! I want to thank everyone for such a great turn out for the Pancake Breakfast on Memorial Day. And thanks to our volunteers, Robert Sheets, NormaJean Cavel, new member Paula (I m sorry I don t know your last name), Lorraine Tobin, Cindy Stenek and her friend Melanie Hite, who is not a member, but who will be hint hint! And Thanks to Frank Lange for the MIA flags. We were expecting around 80 and had 130. NOT BAD. We will be doing this again for Veterans Day, so mark you calendar. This time, we will plan for 130 or more. Wine Society met May 27th and 20 were in attendance. Microphone didn t work, so things were a little chaotic. But don t let that stop you from participating in the next meeting where we will be enjoying another choice of wines. The wine and beer societies will not be meeting this month due to Transpac. Speaking of Transpac. This is it! It s show time! HYC has been busy dusting off the red carpet and anxiously awaits the arrival of the yachts participating in the race. Besides being a great racing event, Transpac is also a great opportunity to make new friends and renew old friendships. If you haven t volunteered yet, don t think it s too late. We need all the volunteers we can get. You won t regret it....please come to the club, enjoy the galley and enjoy the food. There is a full menu plus specials. I want to thank everyone for their support of the Galley. More and more people are coming in, appreciating the food, and sales are up, but we still need more participation. Watch for a new menu. Chef Alfredo has prepared a great catering menu for Transpac boat hosting. There is a great selection to choose from. To those of you who have voiced your dissatisfaction with the prices in the galley, I don t know what to tell you. We are lucky to have a galley and when you factor in the quality and the size of portion, the prices are not out of line. If the galley was full every day people eating - Prices could come down. Fresh food that doesn t get eaten stays fresh only so long before it has to be thrown out. The lunch menu is limited because there is not always a crowd. In fact, some days I have seen only two people eating. So please come to the club, enjoy the galley and enjoy the food. There is a full menu plus specials. I have spoken with other commodores from other yacht clubs on Oahu who frequent our galley, and they believe we are extremely lucky. Please support your club, your bar and your galley. The beautiful new Ala Wai Docks Obviously, it is impossible to please all the people all the time, but I really had to chuckle the other day because someone who was complaining about the galley said I don t know good food because I eat at McDonald s. That is probably the one place in the world you will NOT find me. You know who you are. Howie Mednick Commodore

Vice Commodore Sterling Lau 5 Hi Folks! On Memorial Day, May 25 the Hawaii Yacht Club hosted another year of an All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast at the club s lower deck. Howie and Barbara Mednick were assisted by friends in cooking and serving the meal which included scrambled eggs, bacon, and the perennial pork and Portuguese sausages. Barbara is known for her proficiency in turning out those pancakes perfectly every time. There s nothing better than eating pancakes on a beautiful morning at the club with good friends at every turn. That s what it s all about. Photos_Pirates Night with a big band when called upon. Yes indeed, we aim to keep you entertained so keep Saturday nights on your calendar. What? You mean the state of the economy is pulling at your purse-strings and causing you to make vital decisions? Well, like President Bill Clinton once said: I feel your pain. that is why Pirate Night was moved from Saturday night June 13, to Friday night=2 0June 12. Everybody likes Pirate Night as evidenced by the large crowd which danced to the music and stayed until the end of the night with the Jumpin Johnny Rock Society. I will move heaven and earth to make sure that you get the best chance of having a fun night with the funds available in your wallet at any given time. Stimulating yeah? I will move heaven and earth to make sure that you get the best chance of having a fun night with the funds available in your wallet at any given time. Stimulating yeah? Two new one-man bands, Lenny West, and Roshan have been providing toe-tapping, danceable music to the HYC faithful who amble on down to the club on Saturday nights in search of adventure. Folks have not been disappointed as smiles appear on their faces after hearing a few bars of the musical fare. Other solo performers who regularly entertain you on Saturday nights include: Gabe Aku Compehos, Ron Miyashiro, and Carrie Nichol, a sweet young girl who can easily belt out Rock & Roll The TRANSPAC Committee has been growing with 73 members signed up at this time, and signs of more growth every day. If you are feeling the itch to be in on the action and want to make sure that you re there, get in touch with me or Patty Naiyoke, or just sign up on the board located on the lower deck next to the office. Be sure to write your name, telephone number, and address legibly. If all else fails, show up at our dress rehearsal meeting next Saturday, June 27, from 3pm to 6 p.m.. If this is your time shine just do it! On June 21, 2009, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. we celebrated a Father s Day Picnic at the lower Deck of HYC and had a grand time. We did away with the Chili this time around and opted for fare such as: Steak, Western ribs, baked beans, Arizona corn salad, red potatoes with sour cream, corn bread, and cake. The food was fabulous and the fellowship shared by HYC members will be memorable for a long time to come. Aloha my friends and see you at the club! Sterling Lau Commodore

21 boats fished with us, and all the wahines that entered we want to thank you for making this another successful senorita tournament at Hawaii yacht club. A tournament cannot be successful unless you have great sponsors and volunteers. It takes months and months to plan a tournament of any size. We would like to thank all the volunteers that help make this legendary tournament a great success year after year. 1st of all, a big mahalo to Jim O Hara of money box team, Jim put in long hours each day on the radio and many hours in the planning of the 30th annual senorita jackpot, for those you who got a copy of our program, Jim is responsible for this program this year and years past, with wonderful photos, grid map, cover sheet, fishing rules & schedule of events, mahalo Jim for all you do for us and hyc. On his team of radio crew and early morning boat check in and evening check in, thank you to, George Machado, Dave Grimm, moon, and Todd smith. More thanks to these folks that make it happen for us: Howie Mednick/Commodore, Al Bento/one of the tournament founders, Nick Woytendo/club manager and his team of Zoli and Mey, Port Captain/Robbie Santanello, mike ells/weigh crew captain and his crew, Kathy Ells, Rainbow T-shirts, Mitchs Fish Market, Norma Jean Cavallo, Nash of margaritas, Barbara Silvey and Tiffini/registration. If I missed you, mahalo, you know who you are. Here is how it all began... The story of the mermaid: In the spring of 1979, Hawaii Yacht Club board member Bill Walters attended what was described as a monotonous and cumbersome meeting at the club. Also in the room during that unpublicized meeting was an 18 year old recording secretary by the name of Skippy Turek. Taking meeting notes and completely unaware of Bill s agenda, Skippy became the target of his wandering mind, and got the urge to memorialize his thoughts by drawing her. After the marathon meeting was adjourned, on a sheet of paper laid what would become the cover for the July 1979 Hawaii Yacht Club bulletin, which in turn promoted that year s transpac yacht club race. Who would have thought then that the little mermaid bill drew to pass time in a board meeting would eventually become the logo of what now is Hawaii s most famous women s event: the Senorita s Jackpot Fishing Tournament. 14 14 Sailing Tony Miller Rear Commodore for Sail Aloha Racers! We had no ocean races in June except, of Aloha sailors! We had no ocean races in June except, of course, our Friday Night Races. These races are a fun way to end the week and/or start your weekend. Our dedicated Race Committee headed up by Mark Olsen is out there each Friday night to start and finish the race. Did you know that each and every week boats sail? Kudos to them. Please volunteer your boat for one, just one, Friday night as RC boat. You will much appreciate what it takes just to run these short fun races. Coming up 10, 11 & 12 July is the 3 day Mesick Series which has taken on new popularity. The night race which is the first in the series is a challenge and adds another dimension to racing. Look for the NOR and SIs via soon. Down the race track we will have our annual Labor Day Regatta from Maui to Honolulu. We have given much thought as to moving the starting line back from Honolua Bay to off of Kapalua. Give me your input on what you think. In the meantime, Transpac will be in full swing during July. The club will be filled to the brim with Transpackers their friends and families. Please make them welcome at HYC. Our Mt Gay Party is sure to be a blast on 15 July. Sail safe, Tony Did you know that each and every week boats sail? Kudos to them. Please volunteer your boat for one, just one, Friday night as RC boat.

Junior Sailing Scott Melander 15 Aloha! The Hawaii Yacht Club Summer jr sailing program is underway. We have novice sailors in the Topper in the mornings along with intermediates in the el toro and the racing class is in the afternoon with 420s and Lasers. The next session begins on July 6 and there is space available. The next session begins on July 6 and there is space available. The Pearl Harbor Youth Sailing Invitational was on June 20 and there were strong winds for the lasers and el toros. Congratulations to Morgan Merrill, Colby Curtis, and Laura Hughes who sailed in some breezy conditions. Thanks to our hosts at Pearl Harbor for the great day. There was lots of pizza afterwards! On July 6-10 Hawaii and Waikiki Yacht Clubs are hosting the US Sailing Association Junior Olympic Sailing Festival. There are applications available on the HYC website. Thanks to our assistant instructors who have been sailing with new students in the Toppers. They are Morgan, Tristan, and Colby; they are invaluable to have as they create a safe learning environment for the new sailor.

16 3 Days Around Oahu 2009 About a dozen boats started this year s Three-Day around Oahu race, after a few boats had dropped out due to the lack of wind. At the start of the first day however the winds looked more promising than originally thought, we had a nice sail passed Kokohead and that s where the floating started. The current was playing games with most of us, except those who were clear ahead. A wrong tack and everything would be lost. This was somewhat discouraging, but most were determined not to turn on their engines and made it to the finish line in Kaneohe. That night the Bondi Tram crew decided that something drastic had to be done in the hopes of more wind for the second day, our skipper Andy McDonald decided to let his hair be shaved only leaving a mohawk. We already had the keg ready to go on the boat the next morning, so the mohawk was just a nice addition to the talks on the dock. And at first it appeared to have helped in the search for more wind, as we had a nice start and race out the main ship channel of Kaneohe Bay. The race in the end for the day took about 9 hours, and about 12 hours from dock to dock. We were exhausted, having been in the sun all day, but had after all sailed well considering the circumstances of not having much WIND! The last day looked more promising as we all started the return to Waikiki, it also turned out to be much shorter than anticipated. Going outside however did not pay off, as the wind was not with us that day, but we all learn from our mistakes, and after all, with an average crew age of 25 for weekend. In the end, all that matters is that we had FUN!

This year s Summer Circuit was hosted by KYC on June 7th, 14th, and 28th, with of 4 races on each day, had a total of 22 boats entered, 6 Melges s, and 4 J24 s were among the fleet. It was an awesome time had by all! 17

20 Cruising & Voyaging Bill Beadle Fleet Captain Above_Cruiser s Raft Our Fleet Captain Bill Beadle, who usually writes an interesting column, is making a power yacht delivery from La Paz Mexico to Hawaii. He is expected back at the end of June and we look forward to hearing stories of his big adventure. In May we had a very interesting and well attended presentation by Kai ulani Murphy, a student of navigation with the Polynesian Cruising Society, and instructor of Hawaiian astronomy and history at the Honolulu Community College and Marine Education Center. Kai ulani was assistant navigator on several of the voyages of Hokulani. She also helped us break-in our new portable PA system, which worked very well and allowed the larger audience to better hear Kai ulani, while she was free to move about without a hand microphone. We wish to extend a very big Thank You to all the cruisers who contributed to the purchase. Also in May, our 3rd annual Around Oahu cruise, over the Memorial Day weekend, went off without a hitch. The winds were very light and we did more motoring than sailing, but conditions for anchoring were ideal for our stops at the Kaneohe Sand Bar on Saturday and Pokai Bay on Sunday. It was a relaxing get-away for the 5 participating boats and their crew members. We visited, fished, swam and enjoyed the company of our fellow cruisers, and even got to sail a bit on the return leg on Monday. Check out our web site at hyccruisingsociety.com for more photos and all the gory details. You say you don t have a boat, but you wish to day sail or cruise, and haven t met a skipper in need of crew? At the skipper s meeting for every cruise we do, one or more captain says I would go, but I can t find crew! That s sad, sad, sad. There are several opportunities for potential crew & skippers to meet. On the first Sunday of each month, at 9:00 am, members and friends of The Cruising & Voyaging Society meet for breakfast, upstairs at the HYC Galley by the Sea. Hit the Swap Meet at the fuel dock then stop over and meet some great people. 9:00 am on Sunday too early for you? We have our regular monthly meeting on the 3rd Wed. of each month, at 6:00 p.m. on the HYC Lower Deck. Stop by and check us out.
