4 Commodore Charles Barclay Aloha Members, Aloha Boaters! Two Sundays ago Hawaii Yacht Club held the Rabbit Island race. Seven Class B and three Class A boats participated. Good winds, moderate seas, plenty of food and drink at the end. Even with moderate seas and a refractory chop from Portlock to Makapuu, people got sick, and the sun burned our skin, it was just another day on the water, no big deal, right? Why do we ocean race? Many of us race simply to compete, others to test themselves, and still others to test nature. Whatever the reason it is what draws many of us to the Hawaii Yacht Club. The Rabbit Island race, the Lahaina Return Race, and the HoloHolo around the island are medium distance ocean races, they test sailors and gear. Honokohau, Kawaihae s small boat harbor, and general berthing shortage point to a suffering boating industry caused by inadequate harbor management. DLNR s boating division (DOBOR) realizes it currently lacks the structure, money, manpower, and skills to develop its small boat harbors. SB1555 should brighten prospects for Hawaii s long suffering boaters it has instead, yet by splicing together different issues, it provides ripe targets for discontent and possibly litigation. Under SB1555 DOBOR can create a public corporation like the Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA see hcdaweb.org) to permit 65 year leases of submerged and Thus, we treasure these events and we learn from them. fast lands (the lands surrounding the harbor). It works at Another event in which sailors test themselves is the Transpac, this year s event is big with more than fifty-five boats likely to start. It will be a big event for us too. Sunni Danforth and crew are stocking up in the Ship s Store. Ron Pestel and Joseph Shacat have great entertainment lined Kewalo Basin Harbor ( In short, privatization should be good, unless they turn the whole damn harbor into a wedding chapel. Questions or concerns, please contact me at (808) or kbh.harbormaster@gmail.com. up with a sure to be remembered Bacardi Party (who needs a red hat when you can have a white one?). Barbara Silvey, Miles Anderson and Beth Malvestiti have us hosting a fleet of boats. So come enjoy the spectacle of Transpac during Charles Barclay Commodore HYC July. Call or us if you want to get involved. Recently, I saw s urging the Governor to veto bills HB 931, HB 1566, and SB Many have asked, so here is my take: HB 931 mandates quarterly demonstrations of seaworthiness by exiting the harbor. Buoy runs are a poor test of seaworthiness and enforcement is unlikely. Without consequences, these rules are only a suggestion. HB 1566 permits commercial operations in the Ala Wai. As a sailing coach, father of two HYC junior sailors, and harbormaster of a nearby mixed use harbor, this will create conflict between the time is money commercial operators and the time is for recreation sailors and paddlers. We need to prepare for it. SB1555 allows private development to improve harbor 4 facilities. Overdue repairs at the Ala Wai, Keehi, Lahaina,

7 General Manager Chris Laletin Dear Valued Members! The summer sailing season is rolling in and for good reason it seems that all the buzz in the air is Transpac preparation. Transpac requires tremendous planning with hundreds of volunteer hours all working together to insure HYC presents itself well and that our visitors are welcomed with HYC s tradition of Aloha. Our employees are paying extra attention to each and every detail that it takes to keep our house & grounds in good order. In case you haven t noticed, our lawn and gardening is looking better than ever. We have removed a lot of items (junk) that has collected around the property. Our members are beginning to use the To Do clipboard in our lower galley to inform me and the employees of items that need attention or repairing. The chef is putting together his plans for expanded menus and hours of operations during the TP event as well as creating catering menus for our visiting yachts to request on board their boats. New TP merchandise is on the shelves in our Ship s Store and our members and guests are already snatching them up. A special Mahalo goes out to VC Ron Pestel and HYC member Suni Danforth that have been working closely together in the design, ordering and display of the new merchandise. Come on in and take a look while the best selection of sizes and styles are on the shelves. From the Operations perspective one of my prime objectives is to review and understand the many existing vendor contracts presently in place. Are our contracts appropriate in today s environment, are we getting the best prices, and should we be considering new options to improve our services while reducing costs? For example, HYC has been renting the beautiful plants that were up in the Galley dining room. We have good staff that can care for our own plants so last month I canceled the rental contract and purchased our own decorative plants. With all the desired TV channels and sports available on the standard Oceanic Cable offerings, we have eliminated the extended channel cable package. HYC has maintained memberships in various organizations, some required, some optional and a few unnecessary. Obviously we have discontinued several. Just these few changes will save HYC over $3000 per year. I know there is a lot more low hanging fruit to be picked as we tighten our belts. Hawaii Yacht Club is here for the members, no other reason. You have my commitment to insure that each month we improve our services, reduce unnecessary costs, and manage our facility the very best we can. However, our membership plays a significant role in the success of the club. Most important we need our members to utilize the club facilities and support our events. If every week could draw in our membership like the chef s fantastic Easter and Mother s Day events, wow, the facility would be hopping all the time. There are many regular events that you should come to and join in the fun. How about the Monday evening BYO BBQ, or the Friday evening race celebration, or the great music and dancing every weekend. We need you to come on down and bring a friend or two with you. Here is your ultimate opportunity to support the club, sponsor a new member application. If just one out of four members brought in a new member this summer, we would grow our membership to historic levels. It s my goal; make it your goal too. My and cell phone are now activated and you may contact me at or HYC- GM@hawaii.rr.com Mahalo and happy sailing. Chris Laletin Club Manager 7

8 R.C. Sail Joseph Shacat Aloha Sailors & Racers, Rabbit Island The Rabbit Island Race was held on Sunday, May 15. This race was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 7, but was postponed due to the rough conditions and threat of lightning. As it turned out, the 15th was a beautiful day, with wind ranging from 8 15 knots. We had 10 boats on the water, with a very respectable B-fleet of 7 boats. We had a lot of volunteer support for race committee and galley crew. Special thanks to Barbara and Howie Mednick for doing the start from their boat, Kula Kai Momi. It was their first time starting an offshore regatta, and they got to see first-hand how competitive and close the starts are. One of the racers came so close to the committee boat that Howie said the skipper might have to clean his underwear! Congratulations to all who competed. The top finishers are listed below: Class A 1st Cazan (Scott Bradley) Waikiki Yacht Club has to be commended for putting on an excellent regatta. The race committee work was excellent, and they provided a wonderful banquet, with champagne and takehome prizes for all participants. We had a large network of race crew and support crew. Ikaika s victory is truly a testament to the excellent teamwork and support from the club. Below is a listing of crew members that we d like to thank. I apologize in advance to anyone who may have been inadvertently left out. Team Ikaika dominated the regatta with four 1st-place finishes and one 2ndplace finish. We had great conditions, a well-prepared boat, a skilled and practiced crew, and excellent performance on the water. Nonetheless, the competition was stiff. With six boats on the water (including Nawiliwili Yacht Club and Maui Boat & Yacht Club), this was the highest turnout that the Lipton Cup has seen in recent memory. 10 Cruising & Voyaging Thomas Gebhardt Greetings HYC members, Well the trip to Makua over Easter weekend April was a great hit and the boats and their crews were all rewarded with a peaceful anchorage and a great pot luck dinner. Well done to the vessels and their crews. Sunday May 1st was the Cruising and Voyaging Society s annual celebration with a brunch at the Galley by the Sea. Thanks to the Barb & Howie and the decoration committee for beautiful May Day flowers. The attending 40 plus members enjoyed fine food thanks to Chef Alfredo and his staff. Special thanks go to Leslie Moore who was able to get generous gift cards donated from POP and West Marine as prizes. The coveted Cruiser of the Year award went to Dave Cooper and Nancy Terrell aboard the P/V Swan Song. This couple is always available for boaters in need. They are great hosts, and quick to offer a shuttle boat ride, a warm story and some kind words. Congratulations Dave and Nancy. Well done. and we hope they come back to visit often. Our last meeting ended with a presentation from sailor Erwin Tik Spitzer and was primarily a slide show of his voyages of the Pacific aboard the Ketch Ariel, now on F dock. Our thanks to him for taking the time to share his experiences with the Cruising Society and other Hawaii Yacht Club members. Our next group cruise is set for Memorial Day Weekend, the annual cruise around Oahu, with stops planned for Kaneohe and Makua Bay and/or Pokai Bay. We always have a good turnout for this popular annual group cruise, and look forward to an enjoyable three to four day trip. Some lucky members can even stay longer as their schedules permit. Above_Barbara Mednick, Kimmie Apo and Normajean Cavell Above_Michael & Patti Salomon Another award for recognition was given out to our Communication officers Mike & Patti Salomon. Without them we would not have been able to receive reminders about planned cruises and upcoming meetings, which helps hold the group together. They set up and ran the website site; if you haven t seen it you must visit hyccruisingsociety.com and check it out! Unfortunately we are losing them to a move back to the mainland. As I write this they are securing and preparing their high tech replacements. I personally will never be able to say enough nice things about them. They will be sorely missed Any members wanting to buddy boat with Capt. Steve Dixon (author of: The Hawaiian Voyages of the Ono Jimmy ), he is planning to go to Kauai in mid-june. Please contact him for more details. That is the summary of the past month and a glimpse of the future. Have a great month and hope you ll join us for Brunch on the first Sunday of each month, or our regular meetings at 6 pm on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. Submitted very respectfully, Submitted very respectfully, Thomas Gebhardt 10

12 Membership Marty Loo Aloha and Welcome Aboard! Another month is coming to a close. I was fortunate to meet with our newest member and post his picture and bio just in time to bring him in at our May Board Meeting. I still have several members without sponsors and have had talks with the Commodore about having a meet and greet session so we can get these future members in line for membership this summer. If you want to be a part of this keep your eyes out for a notice on the new member board by the office. Let s all work as a team to get people to join. The inquiries continue to come in and I answer each inquiry individually and invite the prospective members to come in and see the club. I have also noticed an influx of visitors from Down Under who are coming up for a holiday. Let s get in practice with our Aloha Spirit. For the prospective members, I know that if I can get them here they will see just what a great place and great club we are. At the last board meeting I announced what our member numbers were, they should have higher but weren t. Unfortunately, members who had already resigned months and months ago had not been taken off the rolls. Now with the office running much more smoothly we will get a clearer picture of where we are. As for our newest member, Allyn Woodcock is new to the islands but that didn t stop him from signing up for a slip and getting it prior to placing his application with us. Allyn is a very busy person with a full time job at Kewalo during the day and some evenings at Morimoto s. He owns a Santana 22 and is learning how to sail as he goes. Since placing his application with the club he has volunteered in the Ship s Store as well as helping Chris fix items in need of repair. Introduce yourself even though I am sure you have seen him around the club. His sponsors are Charles Barclay and Linda West. Transpac is rapidly approaching and if you haven t placed your name in to volunteer somewhere do so now. We are closest to the racing yachts and will get to have their crews visiting us a lot more than the other clubs. I am sure they will want to share the stories about the race. Remember, if you find new boat owners out on the docks, walk up and say hi. Invite them in for a soft drink and tell them how neat we are and how much fun they would have with us. Much Aloha, Marty Loo Membership Above_New member Allyn Woodcock Left_Vice Commodore Ron Pestel showing the club s Transpac ad 12

17 Before The Mast by Mark C. Olsen- 5/19/2011-#3 Two women across the channel OC-1 relay race, May 5, 2011 Gary Brookins and I aboard his new Makau 8-Ball, were honored and privileged to escort two ladies with team #61, Hawaii 5-0 to paddle across the Kawii channel. This was for the worlds one man outrigger canoe relay race, Kalulakoi, Molokai to Ala Moana Park, distance over 40 miles. Our team consisted of Kelly Fey, and her childhood friend Pauhi Loane (Princess), they also brought their support coach as well. Kelly who has won these races over twelve times before. She just recently had bought a new Scorpios canoe on Maui the week before. Instead of shipping it back, the new canoe was launched for the first time at Fleming s beach on Maui. Kelly then paddled it over to Molokai, down the slot, and on to the start at the West end of Molokai. You do the math on that course traveled. The start had over 100 canoes going over to Oahu. Our job was to get them across safely, find them the current, and pick them up when transferring every ½ hour. We had to find Kelly at the start of ½ hour crew change. Not easy to do, takes good boat handling skills, and lots of patience. The first paddling team we encountered was 75 year old Nappy Napoleon paddling side by side with his 12 year old grandson ( he hulied twice). Very heart warming and historic. Like all the paddlers say wear da pain. Half way across the Kaiwi, making crew changes every half hour with no mishaps. Kaiwi was being kind to us today. She seems to be in a good mood. She allowed us to play with her swells. We caught her bumps, took her lumps, and surfed the swells up to 9 knots. It was a good day to paddle, surf, and swim in the bosom of the Kaiwi, at the Penquin Banks. Gary and I drove the girls with all the focus on getting them to Oahu, and staying on course. Our GPS went out, phone call to Lenny at West Marine took 1 hour. We still pressed on and paddled. Put the girls right on the track for Koko Head. No GPS-wayfareing-done it enough. GPS came on, our track was still straight. Took the girls across the finish line at Ala Wai in 61st place, in 5;57;38. Raced over 40 miles, canoe traveled over water 100 miles. Cheers girls. Nappy came in 62th, behind us. HYC won Lipton Cup!!! Aloha Mark C. Olsen FLOTSAM & JETSAM FLOTSAM & JETSAM is an appropriate title for this section, as it is a hodge-podge of goings on and news at HYC. I will give credit to Patti Solomon, as that was her suggestion. Unfortunately, that will be among her last contributions to HYC, as she and Mike will be leaving Hawaii to go back to their roots in California and be closer to family. I certainly understand the closer to family part. By the time you read this, Hawaii and HYC will be in their rear view mirror, however, our doors are always open for them. Our esteemed member, Peter Knutson is lucky, not only to be a member of HYC, but to be alive. He was riding his bike on the north shore and got into an accident. On a 28 mile ride, the accident happened around mile 25. He suffered broken ribs and punctured lung, among other injuries. But that didn t stop him from attending the HYC wine tasting on April 21, along with a friend. I understand at this writing, that while he is feeling much better, he still has to take it easy. The wine tasting on April 21 was attended by 38 members and guests. Everyone was treated to a chocolate bar to go with the wine. You chocoholics will be happy to know it is now trendy to pair wine with chocolate. Our most recent wine tasting was May 19, which featured, and organic wines, along with a Sangria demonstration and tasting. The next tasting is scheduled for June 16 and will feature robust wines celebrating Fathers Day. Barbara Dove was head over heels for the April wine tasting literally. On her way home, she fell and broke a rib. She is doing well now, but if any of you have ever broken a rib, you know how painful it is. Fortunately, I do not know the discomfort, but Howie can relate. We wish her a speedy recovery. Easter Sunday was well attended. While our VC and his family spent a much needed break on the north shore camping, before he left, he verified with the Easter Bunny that there would be no slip ups. Thanks to the Bunny s assistants, Linda West, and her daughter, Kukii, the keiki had eggs to hunt. The chef put on a great brunch buffet. While it may not look like it, the repair/replacement of our docks is moving right along. The divers for the insurance company have been out to make their assessment, and we should know shortly what happens next. Being all put back together by Transpac is looking more like truth than fiction. The Lipton Cup said Buh Bye to WYC and Hello to HYC. Congratulations to Tony Miller and his crew for a stellar performance. I know there will be much written by RC for Sail and others about Tony Miller and Team Ikaika winning the Lipton Cup so I won t comment further except to say CONGRADULATIONS!!! You deserve it for all your hard work and preparation. Howie and I were proud when Tony asked us to stop by WYC to pick up the trophy. It was a great feeling walking out of there with the trophy. In fact, we could have walked away with several others because their office girl gave us the key to their trophy cabinet and walked away. But we didn t! Mother s Day at HYC was full of champagne and roses passed out by the Commodore and several Staff Commodores. There was an excellent turn out and our Chef and his crew put on a great brunch buffet. George Machado brought a bunch of mothers and had pretty much most of his family with a table for 17! And what a fine family they are. Thanks to all who made this a special day. Transpac Get signed up to volunteer today don t wait. Barbara Mednick kmasda@aol.com Any news (gossip) gladly accepted
