4 Commodore Ron Pestel The Commodore s Comments The NEW ALOHA DOCK is in place as well two new side docks and all have new ramps. What a coincidence.hyc had its 111 th BIRTHDAY OCT. 11 th, 2012 and the NEW ALOHA DOCK was being installed that same day. What a wonderful birthday gift for the good old girl to have fresh / new docks to grace her beautiful waterfront. We have many cruisers at sea contacting your Port Captain Ron as well local yachts that want to come back to HYC that were displaced during the renovation. HYC is getting back in gear to generate income from the new docks. The Dock-Zilla Team will be working the installation of the utilities. I was remiss last month in by not recognizing two members who designed the plans for the docks and obtained the permits. Doug Allen and Jim Schmidt are the silent volunteers that deserve all of our thanks for the support. Both are past Board of Governors. MAHALO! Awning Replacement: The rebuild {long awaited} is being completed by longtime members / supporters / unsung heroes George Machado & Company Carey Johnston, Richard Ally and Carlton Kauahi. The plan is to have it completed by mid-november. This will make the side lanai and lower deck inside much cooler for all to enjoy as well reduce heavy rains from rolling under the sliding doors. MAHALO! Marketing Committee Chair: We ALL must thank Janet Scheffer BOG. She has the Living Social Membership Drive rolling and we are in the queue to be advertised on the web site. This is another {outside the box} effort to stimulate potential members to join the club and at no cost to the club for the advertising. Janet also set up a radio show for HYC this year, arranged for public press releases and announcements via all sorts of print and web media. Janet also designed the New HYC trifold information folder for potential members. She designed the HYC New E Mail Blast layout and set up to match the trifold colors and layout continuity folks in advertising. Most recently HYC on Oct PM enjoyed having Captain Simon Avery & Crew of the famous {Whale Wars Discovery Channel show} brief the Cruising & Voyaging Society / club members on their efforts to save whales and all other marine life. They were in port for repairs of the Brigitte Bardot and our own Lynn Silva was doing the work. Lynn Silva was instrumental in asking Captain Simon & Crew to visit the club. Janet Scheffer, again came through with arranging for local TV media coverage that night. HYC was on TV folks! Election of New Officers& BOG: October 16 th General Membership was the time to be at the club. Election Committee Chair Michele Hansen invited all of the candidates to say a few words of introduction. It was a good idea to have them come in early vs just the night of the election. Please come to the November 20 th General Membership meeting election night and you will again have the opportunity to meet the candidates and VOTE your choice.

5 I thank you all that stepped up to be a candidate! WHEEL & COMPASS POPCORN machine: Yes this deserves to be in the Commodore s Comments. The most complaints were when the old machine died after years of popping that fragrant/ tasty snack. Bob and Netta Stillman are lovers of popcorn and donated the Red machine that keeps it fresh & warm. More beverages are consumed when eating that salty snack. That s a Good Thing as Martha Stewart would say. A BIG MAHALO! Christmas Boat Parade December 15th 2012: This has a history of being a fun event started by long time member & past Chair Barbara Silvey. The run down & back to Aloha Tower Market Place was sometimes smooth but more than often rough & wet coming back and delays caused by the cruise ships. Because of the economy the Aloha Tower folks have not been able support the event as in the past. This year the yachts will Parade in their home basin {The Ala Wai} where all of the HYC & WYC members / guests / visitors at the restaurants / hotels can enjoy the beautiful decorations and the crews will not have to endure the challenges of the ride out at sea in the dark.. Stay tuned for more to come on this as time gets closer OUR MEMBERS AND GUESTS DERSERVE ALOHA! Choose being kind over being right, and you will be right every time. Commodore Ron The mission of Wheel & Compass is to pass on the heritage of classic wooden boat stewardship through preserving historically significant yachts and conducting educational workshops through outreach programs. 7 R.C. Sail Marty Loo Aloha Sailors, Thanksgiving is only weeks away and the year s racing season is coming to an end. Holo Holo Around Oahu Nonstop was held on October The race started in the turning basin and went around Oahu, either direction, it was the skipper s choice. This is a grueling race as the boats leave the harbor in the afternoon and arrive back the next day some 12 to 16 hours later. This year we had 4 yachts willing to make the trek and the first boat to leave the harbor departed at noon with the last one heading out after 3:00. Out of the four boats who entered two boats didn t start or had to come back due to mechanical problems. Two boats completed the race, Heartbeat, who went west, finished at 5:33:30 and Trois Amis finished at 6:38:38. As a reward, the crews of the competing yachts were treated to a delicious breakfast buffet prepared Hawaii Yacht Club s Galley Restaurant and send home to sleep. I want to especially thank the Galley Restaurant who once again came to my rescue. When Bob and Dave saw me carting in the provisions to cook eggs and things for Sunday morning they asked what I was doing and after finding out I had planned to cook the breakfast in the lower galley at 6:00AM they told me to take the provisions to the upper galley and they would prepare everything for me. This Galley is the absolute best they did this for the sailors at no charge for their time and came in earlier to get it done. We are so fortunate they are here with us. Results from the Lipton Cup 1 competition will be announced next month as the competition was held the last weekend of October. WYC holds the Beach Fleet and Beer Can Championship November 11 and HYC holds the Kaneohe Rum Run on 11/2-3. Boats wishing to go in the Rum Run leave Waikiki around 10:00AM and arrive in Kaneohe in mid afternoon. There, they get to relax at KYC and then come back the next day for a broil their own burger and some rum shots. Next year the race will be on Veteran s Day weekend in order to have some quality time in Kaneohe Bay. Although this racing season is coming to a close keep coming down to watch the boats on Friday night as they race towards Diamond Head or Honolulu Harbor. Watch the start and finish and stay for the fireworks and a great dinner. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving and see you around the club. Marty Loo Rear Commodore for Sail Ikaika, Heartbeat & Trois Amis

8 Rear Commodore for Power Gary Brookins Fishing I seem to have stayed under the radar for the last couple of months. But between a two week trip to the mainland, two outer island passages on 8-Ball, work demands, working to get my own boat back in my HYC slip, and no fishing tournaments since August, I haven t had much to say except How the Hell are you? I m doing fine thank you for askin! With Trick or Treat behind us, it ll be Gobble Gobble, HoHoHo, and Happy New Year! before you know it, and 2012 will have slipped away and if you don t sign up for the Do or Die Tournament on November 10 th and 11 th or volunteer for to assist the Wounded Warriors Tournament in early December I m gonna leave your name out of the HYC history book! How do you get in it? Read on We started the year out right, with the Jr s Tournament to put smiles on the faces of six dozen kids, and put 15 year old Reno Young s name on the Perpetual Trophy. It was his final year to go for it! 15 is the cut-off age limit to enter. It had been on Reno s list of Things to Do Before I Turn 15 since the age of 5. Wow! Right on Reno! The two memorable moments of Mitch s Suushi Shootout Tournament was Lee Severs flogging the Nemo piñata at the Banquet in behalf of all the skunked anglers, but more importantly the Fresh Catch of the Day.i.e. Mitch Sr. latched onto three pieces of Pilipino chum see photo.* This would be Mitch s final tournament sponsored by his son, as he joined the anglers in the sky several weeks later. We ll miss him and hope this most favored HYC tournament continues in memory of pop. If you didn t get asked to take some women fishing for the Senoritas Tournament do so next year! If you don t have a boat, put on a mini skirt or get a sex change and sign up! The only thing more fun than a Barrel of Monkeys is a Boat Full of Women reeling in the big one! We had three virgin anglers onboard the 8-Ball and they all lost it by landing a Mahi Mahi each. The belated 2nd birthday celebration of 8-Ball (8/8) came on 8/18 and was worth the wait for entering the Aloha Memorial Tournament. While Suzanne and I were asleep for a hot August nap, what should come a biting, but a 153 lb marlin! Bingo! We finally won a tournament! $1,500 prize-money and $517 for the fish at the market. Not a bad day in the office! Makes ya wanna quit your day job doesn t it? I can build you a boat! Whoever said taking bananas or a woman fishing is bad luck hasn t fished a HYC tournament! In July, Patty Naiyoke onboard her Mahalo Jim scooped the Cockeyed Mayor Tournament with a lb Ono with Banana-heads Al Bento and Tom Falehee onboard. $500 and another first for a Wahine! Do it again Patty! If I don t make the Do or Die Tournament I know I m gonna die cause Lyn Silva will kill me if I don t take her fishing on a Makau 23! She helped with all of the tooling and build out of two Makau boats, but has yet to fish one. Since I covered the die part, you (Lyn) gotta cover the do part DO catch us a winner fish! We can t wait, so here is your chance (Mr. and Ms. HYC member!) to come on down and weigh a fish, because Lyn has been our tireless Weigh Master all year long and can t do the job this time! Someone else needs to take her place at the scales.call me! And Thank You Lyn and all the other volunteers who have helped make these events flow flawlessly in Thank you. I still have a pocket full of bar chips ask me for some! Now you know how to get in the HYC history book. It s easy, so I m gonna give you just one more chance

9 the Wounded Warriors Tournament the first weekend of December. This fishing event ends the year with the same powerful community service atmosphere the Juniors Tournament starts the year with. Come celebrate our nation s Purple Heart Veterans, as they enjoy a half-day of fishing and BBQ to follow in the same vein & spirit as the kids do in February. It is a touching and moving event you do not want to miss! In closing, I want to say thank you for allowing me to serve as your RC Power in I mention this prematurely because I know I am not a hard act to follow and no one has, but someone must step up to the plate to orchestrate these wonderful fishing events for the New Year. If I were not relocating my entire business in 2013, I d do it again! The tournaments are a blast and the camaraderie is priceless. Help make some fishy history and tell the Commodore I do RC Power I ll gladly brief you on the details as needed and share files I have created. Mahalo go fish! 11 HAWAII VOTING PROCEDURES Elections As the rest of our nation prepares for and completes the Presidential elections, we, the members of the Hawaii Yacht Club, have the opportunity of electing in our new Commodore, Vice Commodore, three Board of Governor officers and welcome back our Rear Commodore for Sail at our November General Membership Meeting. The Chair will certify the election results as official and inform the membership that evening and post the results, including ballot counts for 30 days after the meeting. Refer to Article V-Election Section 4 Voting. All members should take the opportunity, in these weeks before elections, to know these members that are volunteering their time, efforts, and team spirit towards a positive progress at our beloved club. We have the voting ease of no side politics, no groups to lay claim and associate with other than just all of us H.Y.C. members. We, and the candidates, are all in it for the big picture. The scene of Hawaii Yacht Club members supporting the club s events, ocean activities, meeting with ohana and world travelers at the bar and restaurant and having fun at our Hawaiian paradise here! 12 Commodore Vice Commodore Aloha Hawaii Yacht Club Member s, With a member number of 508 it means I ve been around here a long time and served on just about every committee and office that our club has (except Commodore). I was recently petitioned by a lot of the active and old members to serve as your new commodore. I will accept your nomination for commodore. I only ask that those of you that signed my petition help me when called upon. For those of you that I don t know I look forward to meeting you and hearing your ideas and getting your support. My goal as your next Commodore is to foster more communication and member participation in our club. I will strive to make our club a FUN PLACE TO BE! You ll hear more of my ideas for our club at next month s meeting Tony Miller RC Sail Aloha Fellow Members, I am running for Rear Commodore for Sail again this year. Last year I learned a lot and updated my skills. This coming year I know will be full of excitement with Transpac, our defense of the Lipton Cup and the many events planned for all the sailors. As your RC Sail I would like to invite you to volunteer for either the Friday night Race Committee with Frank Lange or with me for the weekend racing events. This coming year we will have the use of Foundation s boat Puhi as the race committee boat. It s fun to get out there and work the flags or spot or time. Just ask my two constant volunteers, Dan and Rita Marvel who might want a break in The coming year is going to put fun back into the club. With your help as volunteers we can make 2013 a successful year. Mahalo, Marty Loo 12 Aloha HYC Members, I look forward to serving HYC as your 2013 Vice Commodore and humbly ask for your support and help during my tenure. The VC position is time consuming and yet so much fun; it s consuming because the VC is in charge of all club activities and entertainment. It s fun because of the volunteers who come out to help and turn it into a group party even before the event takes place; that s when the real fun starts, when all of the members and guests show up. So, members, please keep a close watch on the bulletin, the club postings, your HYC newsletter (thank you Janet S.and webmaster) and your calendars for upcoming HYC events in I welcome your input and suggestions, please contact me anytime. Mahalo for your support throughout the years and please help me support our 2013 Commodore and Board of governors. Aloha, Linda West BOG , Commodore 2006, Vice Commodore 2005, Membership Chair , Membership Co-Chair 2002 Board of Governors Aloha HYC Ohana, I am the right candidate for a position on the Board of Governors. I am an island born and raised boat owner who lives on his boat here in the harbor and am an accessible member who frequents the club daily. My behavior as your board member will be accountability with transparency, empowering the membership and keeping members in the know, all prior to decisions being made. I bring the following professional experiences to the job: financial consultant, grant writer for nonprofits, real estate speculator, coach, and school teacher. I believe collaboration within our community is essential for positive change. Mahalo, Jeff Karolle

13 Board of Governors Board of Governors In the way of an introduction, my name is Peter Pawling. I m very excited to be one of the nominee s for a position on the Board of Governor s for the Hawaii Yacht Club. In short, I retired from the military a few months ago and was looking for a venue where I could better support the Hawaii Yacht Club after my years of lack luster participation. At the same time a friend of mine mentioned they were seeking positions for the Board of Governors. Perfect! Very briefly I arrived on the islands in 1967 on my Dad s power boat. We lived in slip 660 at the Ala Wai. After graduating from the University of Hawaii in 1971, I left Hawaii to attend pilot training for the Hawaii Air National Guard. I returned to Hawaii in 1973 and furthered my flying career. While my primary aircraft was fighters (F-102, F-4, and F-15), I also flew our transport airlift and tankers. I ve became Brigadier General and Wing Commander in 2004 for one of the largest and most complex organizations in the Air Force. I was promoted to Major General June From 2009 to 2012 I served as a Special Assistant for the Commander of U.S. Pacific Command. My tour at U.S. Pacific Command was the capstone of my career as I often represented the Commander for many high level meetings and events around the world. I retired 30 Jun 12. Every step of the way, I m proud of my service to our country. Other than my career, my other passion is sailing. I ve had a sailboat in Slip F-22 at the Ala Wai since 1973 and currently own a Catalina 320. I feel the skills I learned during my 41 years of military service, working with and leading great people, setting priorities and managing large complex budgets will be of value to the Hawaii Yacht Club and our club members. I look forward to your favorable consideration. Mahalo. Pete Pawling Board of Governors Aloha kakou, As you know by now, I am running for the Board of Governors of HYC. Because you should make an informed decision as to who will be on the board, I would like to give you a bit of information about me and to let you know why I am running. I have been a member of HYC since the early 1990 s but my activities at the club have predominantly consisted of racing on Friday nights an in the HYRA schedule. I first came to the club from WYC with Bill Alexander and his yacht Gerontius in those days of ardent racing that included Transpac, a number of Kenwood cups, and all the other fun races. I later (much later) moved on to several other boats and currently am in semiretirement from HYRA racing, pretty much only participating in the Friday night fun and on the Lahaina returns. Although I have been a member for about two decades, I have mostly been a user and not much of a volunteer around the club, although I have helped on some occasions, usually when asked. Now I think it is time to give a little more back to the club that has provided me with lots of opportunities for fun over time Hence, I am running for the board. I have some experience in organizational governance. I have served on the executive boards of various 501-c-3 non-profits. These include the Hawaii section of the American Chemical Society (secretary, and president for two separate terms), the Hawaii Academy of Science (treasurer for 4 years, then president), Malama o Manoa (a community organization in which I was a board member for 9 years and president for two). These positions have provided me with experience to help me contribute to the Board of Governors at HYC. I am currently a Professor of Oceanography at UH Manoa (and run a research program with over a half dozen employees) with a strong interests in coastal water quality. I focus on the impact of land-ocean interactions on coastal productivity and on coral reefs using a network of in-water sensors (e.g., the yellow buoy off Magic Island) and I also do some work with the US Army carrying out environmental studies at sites of discarded military munitions. Enough of my background. My vision for the club is to try to return to the days of collegial times when the prime interest was to promote sailing, fishing and getting along! There has been some divisive activity lately and we need to re-unify to promote our club and help it flourish. I also believe that we are an aging group and that we need to do more to draw youth to the club. Our junior sailing program is great, mostly due to Scott Melander and his volunteers efforts, but there seems to be a gap between that age group and the rest of us older folk. What I think we need is more 20 and 30 somethings around the club, not only on Friday nights but as participating members. To that end I hope to bridge this (age) gap by improving (and potentially formalizing) contacts with UH and attempting to involved more formally their sailing team and others who have more of a sailing club attitude with HYC activities and to recruit these bright young minds into our club If you are a skipper in need of new and enthusiastic crew, this may be of interest. I know that many of you already bring in young racers onto your boats, but maybe we can make this a true pipeline of new members with relatively little effort. I thank you for reading this long diatribe and for the consideration of your vote. Good sailing and fishing to all Aloha, Eric The Hawaii Yacht Club is truly a special place and if we re to be successful we must embrace all those things that make us special --- as defined by our members (old and new), our history, and our traditions. Anyone who serves on the Board of Governors must understand what we are and represent ALL the members. Serving on THIS Board requires skills specific to this job -- the ability to work with other strong opinionated board members and caring, engaged, and involved members. And most importantly you have to know what we are and still care enough to serve. Board of Governors Michael Ray I received a call from the Nominating Committee in September asking me if I would like to serve in some capacity as a volunteer for the Hawaii Yacht Club. The timing was good, because coincidently, I was planning on retiring and was thinking about what I could do to keep me out of trouble. I met with the committee and after some discussion; I said that I thought I could best serve HYC as a member of the Board of Governors. What could I bring to the party? Well I ve been a member in some capacity since 1969 or so with membership number 474, so I ve seen a lot of history. In those days, there was a waiting list to join and no such thing as a social membership. Growing up in Honolulu, graduating from Punahou Academy, I understand the Island culture. I learned to sail on a variety of boats, including a Sun Fish, Lido 14 and a Cal 20. I even had the privilege of participating in a Cal 20 National. Obtaining a BS and MBA from the University of Southern California, gives me a basic understanding of how to read a financial statement. During the summers, I worked at Keehi Lagoon Dry Dock, commissioning new boats and doing repairs. No travel-lift in those days. When I could, I d go cruising on our family boat throughout the Islands. At USC, I taught sailing on K38 s. After graduating, I worked for very large restaurant companies such as Lawry s Foods (Lawry s the Prime Rib, Ben Jonson) in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Bobby McGee s in Newport Beach and Honolulu. I also opened the Honolulu Club as the General Manager. So I learned a little bit about the food and beverage business. I wanted to try something different, so I went to work for the Mauna Loa Macadamia Company as the Business Development and Marketing Manager. I went further and became the President of the Hawaii and International Divisions. In 1993, I bought a Luhrs Open Express Fisherman and spent my spare time fishing the boat and scuba diving throughout the State. However, I wanted to expand my horizons, so I purchased a Lagoon 42 Catamaran in 1998, fully equipped for long range cruises and my first Trans Pac crossing from San Francisco to Honolulu. It was a memorable crossing with a few 250 mile runs. In , I moved my family to Carlsbad, California to facilitate my spouse s business. This included moving my Lagoon 42 back to California for another Trans Pac the hard way. However, to keep busy, I was honored by being elected as Carlsbad Pop Warner Football President with some 600 boys and girls participating. I also worked as the Financial Officer for the San Diego California Conservation Corps (similar to the Hawaii Conservation Corps). During my spare time, I did a Baja Ha-Ha and cruised the Channel Islands. Unfortunately, things didn t work out as well I had hoped, so back to Hawaii and another Trans Pac with my boat in I then worked as the CEO of a nutriceutical company in Silicon Valley, so I spent most of my time commuting. After a few years doing this, I decided that I wanted to stay put for a while and helped a friend start a new company in Honolulu, which brings us up to the present. So back to what am I bringing to the party? I bring a disciplined and diverse experience from a variety of businesses and non-profit organizations, all of which applies to the operations of the HYC. I believe that my familiarity with Sail and Power, as well as cruising and racing that I have done throughout Hawaii, allows me to relate to the interests of all the HYC members. Our club is in a flux of change at this writing and our ability to adapt to the new environment will be crucial to the future wellbeing of the club. My mission statement as member of the Board of Governors will be to provide the best guidance and resources possible to support the Commodore, Vice Commodore, Club Management and the Committee Heads in the operations of the Hawaii Yacht Club for the future. 14 Junior Sailing Scott Melander Aloha! We ve had a busy fall regatta season with the last two Hawaii Youth Sailing Association Regattas and the last two Laser sailing races of the year. The last two HYSA regattas were held by Kaneohe YC and Makani Kai Yacht Club in light winds on Oct 6 and 7. Sailing in the events were Kukii Falahee, Alicia Ward, Colby Curtis, Dylan Adolpho, Ryan Murray, Nolan Laramore, Marley Cusick, Halana Genest, Paris Sato, and Hamilton Barclay. The Makani Kai shell trophies are really nice and the sailors look forward to the race every year. The last two Hawaii Laser events were held on Oct 13 and 14 with very shifty winds on Saturday and steadier breeze on Sunday. Thanks to Kelli Meskin, Sophie Harris, Ailana Warren, and Benton Widlansky for running the races. Kukii sailed very well in the laser division as well as Halana Genest in the el toro. 16 Whale Wars Makes Pit Stop In Hawaii Captain Simon Avery and Crew to Speak at Hawaii Yacht Club Tonight October 17, 2012 (Honolulu, Hawaii)---Some familiar faces of Animal Planet s hit show Whale Wars have made a pit stop in Hawaii. Captain Simon Avery of the Brigitte Bardot and his crew will be giving an impromptu talk in Honolulu tonight at 7 p.m. at the Hawaii Yacht Club. The high-tech Batmobile of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society s fleet is currently docked at Kewalo Basin for repairs. Lynn, Simon, Marina, Nancy Whale Wars documents the exploits of the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd. The show follows 42 crazy die-hards with a mission to end Japanese whaling off the coast of Antarctica. The show has helped to raise the group s profile and their ocean wildlife conservation efforts that don t just focus on whales. Visit the show s official website for more information at animal.discovery.com/tv/whale-wars/. Sea Shepherds, Brigette Bardo Our new Aloha Docks 16

17 Cruising & Voyaging Thomas Gebhardt Greetings Cruisers, This month, our Brunch was moved to the last Sunday of September due to the galley closing for repairs. We did have a decent gathering on the Sept. 30th brunch and got caught up on all the latest news. We had planned a trip to the Kaneohe Bay air show, but it was cancelled due to cruise leader Bill Tailor changed his mind. The cruisers decided to abandon the trip and some went via land routes to see the show anyway. The result was, there being an impromptu dinner party at Bill s new place in Discovery Bay. The sailors and guests from the skippers meeting were all invited to come up and consume his provisions at the party. It was a warm affair of good friends and we talked into the night. Well done to Bill and Lil for throwing a great little party Mahalo. At our regular meeting we covered the regular topics and hosted the Sea Shepherd organization as a guest speaker. Captain Simon Avery gave us a presentation of the activities that they have been involved in over the years. Many of our group thought very highly of the work being done by them. Some of the others had mixed emotions about it, but as a non-political group we cruisers were all warm hosts and thanked them profusely for their hard work and efforts of saving whales and other sea creatures far and wide. I was very proud of all of us who showed the greatest aloha and the best manners. I personally thank all those at the club who asked us to host this event; Janet Mandrell, Lynn Silva, Beth Malvestiti, and Janet Scheffer for getting the event organized and covered by the news. We did earn a few positive words about the club which is always welcome. Well done to all of the cruisers and other club members who attended (67 people I was told). I would like to mention other club news in which the cruisers had some part in. Well done to those who participated in the dock replacement it looks great! The Cruisers had paid to replace the missing BBQ parts and now we have a complete working BBQ. The cruisers will gather for another Land- Locked Party hosted by Dave and Leslie Moore on Sunday November 4th 2012, and we will again gather for another party. If you would like to get involved with cruising society and getting underway with us in the future just start attending our meetings and first Sunday brunches. We do not require our new cruisers to be members, but offer them to participate in our events. This is part of our outreach for the general public to get interested in the club and become active members. Our next meeting is on Nov. 21st 2012 at 6:30 pm lower level. Our next brunch will be on Nov. 4th at 9:00 am at the upper level. See you there! Thomas Gebhardt, Fleet Captain HYC Cruising and Voyaging Society Brigette Bardo
