7 Commodore Tony Miller November 2014 Aloha, I urge all the members to attend next month s General Membership meeting on Tuesday November 18th as this is our election night; we will be voting in our new commodore, vice-commodore and board of governors. You will also be voting to fill in the seats on the board of governors; last year s governors have chosen to run for their vacated seats with other members running for the extra seats. Other flag officers positions are RC for Power and RC for Sails. All of these positions are volunteer positions and require a lot of time, effort and yes, sometime, sweat and blood, but that s what we do to keep this club afloat. All we ask of you is your support, a few volunteer hours a month and to used the club as much as you can. One way, an easy way you can really help the club is by sponsoring as many new members as you can. By raising the membership roster, we will become financially solvent and start making all of the improvements and upgrades that we need. Also on the ballot for a vote are a few amendments to the by-laws, one is about a very much needed, actually, very necessary increase in our quarterly minimum. It has stagnated at $75 since it was first implemented 8years ago. Most clubs have double or tripled their minimums, even though we are more in need than those clubs, we have not budged our amount, we need to keep up and this is the only way, with the least impact that we can do it. Please come out on election night to support your candidates and your club. Aloha, Tony Miller Commodore HYC 7

9 Vice Commodore November 2014 Tom Gebhardt Aloha Members, This past month we had a Cowboy night event at the club on Sept 20th. This was a nice night of country line dancing lessons and two step kicking round. We introduced a great Country band called Hi Country. They kept us all going. Well done to the galley crew, bar staff and members who wore their country boots and hats. In Oct. 04 we had our annual Oktoberfest party and the band played some German oompah-pah music. We held games and contests including the chicken dances and beer games and all had a good time. Thanks the bar staff as well as the members here at HYC. October 23, we invited JMG Crew they did a free performance for the club. We were also joined by the US Power Squadron who had come over from their convention at the Ala Moana Hotel. It was a crowded club with both the bar and galley ringing up the sales. A special thanks to Chef Eddie, Commodore Tony Miller, Cory and Nicole and the galley staff for working like crazy to keep up with the unexpected crowd by pulling together it all got done. The US power Squadron held their Hawaiian Luau on Saturday night Oct 25th with entertainment by Absolute Joy with pretty and talented Hula Dancers to keep the theme going. The whole club was buzzing about the Hawaiian Luau and the event should be repeated again soon. Thanks to Eder for helping in planning the entertainment and decorating the club. I think it was both nice yet simple. Good food and entertainment planned well done galley, and Eder On Sunday Oct 26th The USCG Auxiliary held a safe boating class where 37 boaters, mostly HYC members got their State certifications well done to all Sterling Lau, Tom Sullivan and myself. It was the biggest single class we ever had at the club. Thank you for supporting us. Halloween is set for Friday October 31st and is going to be a blast with rock music by the 11th Hour and costume contests for children and adults a big mahalo for the queen of party Beth Melvestiti she and her crew are putting up the decorations and it looks very nice. SeaFest on Nov 1st at the HYC we will have a bake sale, dunk tank with live silent and live auctions and other booths and events it should be a good time to raise funds for the Hawaii Youth Sailing Foundation and support the future of young sailors. Nov 27th is Thanksgiving here at the club and to thank all the members and to share the spirit of the season we will have our annual thanksgiving dinner potluck at the club we will be asking all to bring precooked turkeys and sides to share. Watch for the e-blast and posters mahalo. Let s all thank and support those who are stepping up to take new offices. May they serve with honor and pride. Aloha. Tom Gebhardt Vice Commodore HYC 9

16 Cruising & Voyaging Cindy Scheopner The focus of any race is on the results, but sometimes the trip to the starting line is a more interesting story. Three members of the Cruising and Voyaging Society shared their recent experiences on both sides of the line at the monthly membership meeting on Tuesday, October 7. Bill DeRego, Rick Denton, Todd Rasmussen and Tim Stouffer told the story in shifts, just as they had sailed Kamahele to Maui for the 71st Annual Lahaina to Honolulu Race. Kathi Saks was also a member of the crew. As with most boating stories, there were surprises from the wind, waves, and passing vessels. This one included a close encounter with a shipping barge. The crew was joined by Amy Stouffer and Cindy Scheopner for the Maui activities and return race. On the way to the starting line, Kamahele gave a race crew a lift to their boat because their shuttle didn t make it. Coming in from the finish line, they also gave a tow to a race boat with engine trouble. It was the first Lahaina race for the boat and entire crew, and a great Labor Day weekend! 20 Membership Linda West Aloha Members Near and Far, I feel like putting the brakes on the year is going by so fast, whoa Nelly! Granted, we ve accomplished a lot but still plenty to do, oh well; we ll put it on next year s agenda. What we have been able to do is recruit new members, thanks to the members bringing in friends to the club and to the promotions we ve had. One of the more popular specials we ve introduced was the Open House Membership Drive introduced by Governor Leslie Moore on November 5th. This was by far, one of our most successful membership drives, we signed up 14 Regular members that day, 1 Intermediate, 2 Associates and 3 Socials. All 6 Board of Governors were present, including Commodore Miller, Staff Commodore and acting RC for Power Al Bento. Our facility manager, Madeleine and her assistant were there to meet and greet. Chef Eddie had lunch for everyone on the BBQ and former bar manager and now member Fred was pouring the complimentary beer. We hope to follow up with all of the new members from 2014 with another gathering, like a family reunion, in the near future. Norma Jean Cavell has volunteered to chair these gatherings. In the meantime, please continue bringing in your friends, family, co-workers and anyone else you think may enjoy being part of the Hawaii Yacht Club Ohana; our membership is the lifeline and the heartbeat of the club. Aloha and don t forget to vote at our November General Membership meeting on Tuesday, November 18th. Absentee ballots are available from the office. 22 Facilities/Office Madeleine Noa Aloha Members, I am happy to report that upgrades to the internet have been completed! We will be instituting a policy that will prevent non-members and other individuals from unauthorized use, ensuring this service is reserved for paying members only. Another bit of good news is the arrival of new t-shirts in the ship store. These t-shirts are lightweight, 100% pre-shrunk cotton and come in new designs. Priced at $15 each, these shirts make great Christmas gifts! Stop by the Ship Store during office hours to make a purchase or call the office to purchase a gift certificate. These purchases go towards your $75 per quarter minimum spending requirement. Please note that the Galley by the Sea restaurant will be closed from November 24th until November 27th, and will re-open on Friday, November 28th at 11 am. I want to remind everyone that we are a volunteer based club, which brings us close together for the fun of it. The success of the Hawaii Yacht Club is dependent on the help of dedicated volunteers. If it has been awhile since your last contribution or if you have yet to volunteer, please take this opportunity to sign up and help make the club a better place. Volunteering promotes personal growth and self esteem, gives you a chance to give back, encourages civic responsibility and allows you to make a difference. We are in dire need of a Ship s Store Chairperson, a Recording Secretary, Gate Watch and Membership committee volunteers. I am grateful for your time and support of the Hawaii Yacht Club. Please contact me directly at (808) ext. 10 for more information. Come and get involved. In closing, I want to share that the club has enjoyed increased popularity as new members have been drawn to our unique combination of friendly competition and casual activities. I wish to thank all of you who continue to lead by example in displaying the aloha spirit. Until next time, Madeleine Noa, Facility/Office Manager hyc-gm@hawaii.rr.com 22

26 Hawaii Yacht Club 2015 Officer Candidates Commodore Hello Members, I am running for Commodore for My nautical background started when I joined the Navy and served ten years as Petty Officer. I moved to Hawaii in 1991 and learned to sail. In 2004 I joined Hawaii Yacht Club. A USCG Auxiliary member since 2004, served as Vice Flotilla Commander for two terms. I am a USCG certified safe boating instructor having taught hundreds of Hawaiian boaters and club members. I am USCG Auxiliary Vessel Examiner and a member of the Honolulu Sail and Power Squadron. Tom Gebhardt I am a founding member of the Cruising and Voyaging Society, served as the Fleet Captain for (3) consecutive one year terms. I am proud to say that the Cruising Society has never had a budget or used any club funding while providing a positive venue for all HYC members, to attend meetings, monthly presentations, brunches, parties and boating trips. I was instrumental in establishing an official presence of the Honolulu Sail and Power Squadron at the club thus improving membership value by enhancing educational opportunities and adding new members. Last year, I stepped down as Fleet Captain when asked to run for Vice Commodore, where I have been actively serving since Dec As Vice Commodore, me and my hard working wife Eder, have continually brought great events and entertainment while reducing the costs all along the way. My vision is to see the club cut overhead, while adding value and benefits to your membership. Maintain our facility as a world class destination. Increase our membership. Bring all our ideas and planning together to improve the club and have more fun. I honestly thank you for being a member and supporting me and our club. God Bless Hawaii Yacht Club and it s members. Sincerely Yours, Tom Gebhardt, HYC- Vice Commodore 26

27 November 2014 Hawaii Yacht Club 2015 Officer Candidates Commodore In the way of an introduction, my name is Peter Pawling. I m very excited to be one of the nominee s for the position of the Hawaii Yacht Club Commodore. Peter Pawling Very briefly, I arrived on the islands in 1967 on my Dad s power boat. We lived in slip 660 at the Ala Wai. After graduating from the University of Hawaii in 1971, I left Hawaii to attend pilot training for the Hawaii Air National Guard. I returned to Hawaii in 1973 and furthered my flying career. While my primary aircraft was fighters (F-102, F-4, and F-15), I also flew our transport airlift and tankers. I ve became Brigadier General and Wing Commander in 2004 for one of the largest and most complex organizations in the Air Force. I was promoted to Major General June From 2009 to 2012 I served as a Special Assistant for the Commander of U.S. Pacific Command. My tour at U.S. Pacific Command was the capstone of my career as I often represented the Commander for many high level meetings and events around the world. I retired 30 Jun 12. Every step of the way, I m proud of my service to our country. Other than my career, my other passion is sailing. I ve had a sailboat in Slip F-22 at the Ala Wai since 1973 and currently own a Catalina 320. As Commodore I d focus on the following: 1. Preserve and promote the 114 year history and culture of the Hawaii Yacht Club 2. Increase membership satisfaction 3. Increase revenues by increasing club membership and participation 4. Engage the political process for support to expand the Club with added parking and moorings I feel the skills I learned during my 41 years of military service, working with and leading great people, setting priorities and managing large complex budgets will be of value to the Hawaii Yacht Club and our club members. I look forward to your favorable consideration. Mahalo. Peter Pawling 27

28 Hawaii Yacht Club 2015 Officer Candidates Board of Governors Leslie Moore Aloha, My name is Leslie Moore and my husband and I have been HYC members for 12 years. I have been an active member with the Cruising and Voyaging Society since its inception and have hosted the annual potluck at our home in Kailua for several years. I have volunteered my time helping host arriving boats at Trans Pac and with the awards ceremony for several years. I was recruited by BOG Dave Cooper to fill his chair when he and his wife Nancy moved to Florida in February. I did have some reservations but after the first Board of Governors meeting, I realized I wanted to be a part of the team to make HYC an even better Club. I ve been well received by the existing Board of Governors and have some exciting ideas I would like the opportunity to implement. Most recently, I spearheaded a One Day membership drive, resulting in 7 new regular members. I introduced a Sponsor a Bar Stool fundraiser at our last General Meeting, to help build our cash flow for our programs and some necessary upgrades to the Club. Besides sailing, I have been active in fundraising for the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, Chairing a fundraiser that netted over $60K at the Obama holiday vacation rental in Kailua. My knowledge of the needs of HYC, leadership skills and your support will help me continue to improve our Club. I hope you all will support me. Leslie Moore 28

29 November 2014 Hawaii Yacht Club 2015 Officer Candidates Board of Governors Aloha Members, I had a fun year volunteering as the club s membership chair and enjoyed recruiting and personally meeting all of the new members but when the opportunity to serve on the board of governor was proposed to me, I saw an opportunity to contribute even more. Linda West I have sat on the board for many years and feel that my knowledge of the bylaws and the administrative rules of the club is my strength, and the fact that I am a strong advocate of members rights and concerns makes me an ideal candidate. My main goal is to help all of our elected officers and chair persons become successful in their respective programs and aims, which we fortunately all agree on; to make Hawaii Yacht Club a vibrant and financially viable place we call home, beaming with new docks, flowing with hundreds and hundreds of new members coming in every month. Together we can get there, it takes work and the last two years, the BOG has made huge strides, so we are already on our way. 30 Hawaii Yacht Club 2015 Officer Candidates Board of Governors Marty Loo Aloha, I am running for a position on the Board of Governors. For those of you who don t know me, I originally joined Hawaii Yacht Club in My first time out of the Ala Wai was racing in the spring Pokai that year and I decided I wanted to be around like minded people and joined the club two months later. I have raced everything from an El Toro to a 50 yacht and even spent a year teaching basic sailing. Since 2010, I have been Nominating Committee Chair, Membership Chair, Rear Commodore for Sail 2012 & 2013, and temporary Recording Secretary nine months of These positions have placed me in the Boardroom where I observed three separate Commodores and Boards. I believe our Board has a duty to manage the club and make well informed decisions which will make the club a better place for all members. I feel the Board owes the members transparency for their actions. Guidelines the Board governs by must be clear and concise and everything the Board does must be fair and just. If elected I will keep an open door policy with the members. You will be able to call, text or me with your concerns anytime. I will actively investigate anything that is brought to my attention. I will advise the remaining Board members of my findings so we are all well informed prior to making any decisions or voting on any motions. As a retired legal secretary, full charge bookkeeper and having owned and operated a successful business, I know what it takes to run a business and will bring that knowledge to the Boardroom table. I hope you will trust in me and give me your vote for this important position. Mahalo Marty Loo #792 30
