4 Aloha Members, Commodore Tom Gebhardt June is here and it seems the things are moving right along. First off, I want to wish Eddie and his galley crew farewell from everyone here at the club and wish them all good luck in the future. We are looking forward to welcoming the new galley as soon as they are able to get set up and running. Please support the incoming new galley. They have a new menu, fresh food and fresh start to impress you. They are looking forward to meeting and serving us all. They will be starting as soon as possible please call the galley for more information. Secondly, the concrete repairs on the walls are completed by Riley and company. The job grew but they did the extra work without charge. Well done guys! A fresh coat of paint and other repairs on the floor tiles and patching were done by Noah, also many thanks to Steve Eder and others who helped out where they could. Thanks to the bylaws committee for getting the final updates ready to enter and finalize the bylaws update this month. The case against the club regarding the former Manager is being finalized and the matter is being settled by the insurance company. We must remain diligent going into the future and avoid any situation in which there is the possibility of sexual harassment, foul or abusive language toward club employees, vendors and other members. We are ohana, treat everyone with kindness and respect. Thanks to all those involved in the membership drive we had a great success and handed out dozens of applications and are busy processing them. Special thanks to Leslie Moore, Linda West, and George Berman for doing a great job. The new gate card readers are on order and we will be installing and upgrading the system soon. The new system will be able to track attendance dates and limits and more. Also the new cards will be permanent so we will save on issuing new cards every year. If they expire or a member leaves they can be turned off by the system. Thanks to Manger Steve Berkoff for getting his ideas, put together it will save us thousands in the long run. We should have the new electrical meters for the 30 amp service and be installing them in the coming weeks. This will allow the boaters to pay for the fair use of electricity. We are still seeking a solution for the 50 Amp service slip holders. By now I hope you have met our new club office administrator Teresa she is learning all there is to know in the club she has an accounting degree and a background in management she is thrilled to be onboard and is learning the club and its operation. She is a great asset to the club we expect great things from her. Hope you all have a great summer and get some time on the water. Having fun is what this club is all about. Yours truly, Tom Gebhardt Commodore HYC

6 Aloha, Vice Commodore Patti Naiyoke Hawaii Yacht Club still is a very active club this month. Things are still moving and shaking. First I would like to wish Tuuili our very dedicated Ship s Store chairperson a speedy recovery. If anyone could find a few hours a week to help in the store, let the office know. George, Tuuili s partner has his hands full with Tuuili s illness and Membership. Let someone know if you can help him also. Much love and appreciation to both of you, from all members. Mother s day was a little slow, but enjoyed by all who attended. Eddie s menu was great, food delicious. Thanks to Eddie and staff for their efforts. Tuuili and Bonnie came in at 7AM and helped me decorate tables with real spring flowers and flower petals. Staff Commodores Frank Land, Sterling Lau served Champagne, while Al Bento gave a long stemmed Red Rose to each lady. Absolute Joy played beautiful music. Thanks Eder great choice of bands. Open House day (Membership drive) was great. Leslie Moore and George planned it and we all carried it out. The Chef for our new galley Vanessa and staff served prime rib sliders ONO. Wine and beer was also available. All board members, officers, Steve our manager, Theresa, Jo Jo the office staff, Scott Jr sailors participated. Sorry if I missed anyone. Tesla car distributor joined us. They brought 3 cars to view and demo. The also sent out invitations to their customers, donated money for food and drinks. Bill Taylor opened his boat LEA LEA for walkthrus with snacks and water. Linda West and George help perspective members fill out membership forms. All in all it was a great success. This will be my last column until August as I am traveling with my family and friends on the mainland. I will be available on phone and . JB Bransford will be standing in for me while I am away. Hope I have covered everything. It s been quite busy. VOLUNTEER, VOLUNTEER, VOLUNTEER Thanks Paul and George. Please use your club. Show our volunteers, BOG, and officers how much you appreciate their hard work. Have something you would like our club to provide or promote, tell someone. Don t like something the club is doing, tell someone. Think we are doing great; tell your friends and family they should join. Become a Volunteer (gate watch for entertain, special events is desperately in need of volunteers). Signing Off with Happy Thoughts, 6 Patti Naiyoke Vice Commodore HYC 2016

20 Junior Sailing Scott Melander The last youth sailing regatta for el toros and lasers was held on May 7 in the harbor due to the surf on the south shore, there were 31 el toros in attendance! Ten sailors from Nawiliwili Yacht Club on Kauai came over for the day to make a great turn-out. Akira Kumagai, Steve Abe, Sofia Zarella, and Chris Adam sailed for HYC in the afternoon race. The laser class had 21 boats on May 14th for the Laser Districts. The easterly winds off shore made for a steady breeze for the seven races. Ryan and Nolan did the entire series which made for a long day. Thanks to Art Nelson Sailmaker for the prizes for the day. Coming up include our summer sailing classes beginning June 6 and the Pearl Harbor Youth Sailing Invitational on June 18. Scott Melander Jr Sailing Akira in Slim Lambert Invitational 20

24 Aloha Cruisers, Cruising & Voyaging Bill De Rego By: Marybeth Purvis It was another exciting month for the CVS membership, beginning with a Pokai Bay cruise and ending with the Around the Island cruise on Memorial Day weekend (more on that next month). Two vessels made their way to Pokai Bay this past month. Jim Byxbee on POINT GIVEN (along with Eric, Vikki, Charles, Teresa, and others), and Tom Gebhardt aboard GIANT TURTLE with Riley the concrete guy. Tom reported that it was a quick day sail over and right back the next day, but they did get some nice sailing in. Eric Gold on Jim s vessel added that they saw lots of paddle boards and encountered a canoe race of about canoes in the Bay. They spotted a few dolphins and trolled for fish on the way, but no nibbles. The weather was near perfect and the seas were normal and the friendship was awesome. White puffy clouds... warm breezes etc... as always the Pokai Bay anchorage was fine. One of the advantages of joining the CVS is meeting cruisers from around the world who share their adventures with us. At our Potluck & Presentation on May 3rd, we had the pleasure of meeting Wendy Hinman. Wendy and her husband, Garth Wilcox, went on a seven- year Pacific odyssey aboard their 31 vessel, VELELLA. Garth Wilcox, Wendy s father and well-known to the HYC, proudly introduced his daughter and her book, Tightwads on the Loose. Wendy shared with us via slide show and delightful narrative their voyage covering 34,000 miles and visiting 19 countries. Wendy grew up sailing in Hawaii which obviously prepared her for such an adventure, and she met a guy who had already sailed around the world as a young boy, so the dye was cast. They thought they would be gone a year, but were hooked on cruising and kept on going. Their adventures began in Seattle, down the coast to Mexico, over to the Marquesas, Tuamotus, Tahiti, Bora Bora, Tonga, New Zealand tracing WWII history to the islands of New Caledonia, Kwajalen, Pohnpe, Saipan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Okinawa and finally to Japan. After a grueling 49-day nonstop ocean crossing from Japan, they made the return voyage to Seattle. A truly remarkable lady and an inspiration to all of us. Their adventures are best told by Wendy in her book a must read for all cruisers! Her book is available on-line at Please mark your calendars for the following upcoming events: Tuesday, June 7th, 6:30 p.m., Potluck and Presentation: Find out how the Around the Island Cruise went. Sunday, June 19th, 9:30 a.m., Brunch upstairs at HYC. Until next time see you on the water and at our beautiful club! Marybeth Purvis HYC Cruising and Voyaging Society 24

27 June 2016 Hello Hawaii Yacht Club Members My name is Vanessa Enomoto. I am a local girl that graduated from Roosevelt High School. I come from a very supportive family who helped me raise my twin boys. I have 30 years of experience in the culinary industry. I started working at a private country club as a dishwasher and through the years worked my way up through the entire kitchen to become the executive Sous Chef at Waialae Country Club. After several years in that position, I felt it was my time to move on and create my own menus and execute my own ideas. I love creating new dishes and making off the wall creations. I have had the pleasure for cooking for some of Hawaii s most influential people. I ve also had the pleasure of working side by side with some of Hawaii s Top Chefs. I am very excited to call HYC my new home, and can t wait for all of you to experience what my crew and I have prepared for you. Galley Liaison Tracy Eder - Chef Vanessa Enomoto and Vice Commodore Patricia Naiyoke Mahalo, Chef Vanessa Enomoto JUN 4 CLOSED JUN 9 Hawaii Yacht Club members are invited to bring POT LUCK Saturday June 4th and Sunday June 5th while we are in the middle of this transaction bringing in Chef Vanessa - the Galley will be closed from June 4th though June 9,
