5 February 2014 Commodore Tony Miller Aloha, Thank you to all of who helped with the Commodore s Volunteer Appreciation and Recruiting Party, special thank you to those who signed up to help the club in Eddie outdid himself again with ono sliders and other scrumptious pupus. If you haven t tried the galley lately, there s a new menu that s sure to appeal to everyone. When the galley is closed, the bar will have readymade platters and sandwiches available so that no one will go hungry. New bar chips are available for 2014; they are blue and available for purchase at the bar. All passed chips, whether small blue, white, wooden, plastic, etc will be null and void on March 31, 2014, the end of the 1st quarter. Thank you for your patience with this; it was an accounting nightmare to deal with old chips showing up and the BOG, after thorough discussion, agreed that this was the best way to handle this. I can t impress on you the need for new members; please introduce your family, friends, co-workers or clients to the benefits of being a member at HYC. We have a terrific group of people here, ready to welcome new members. On a sad note, the past several months, we ve seen the passing of close friends. I m happy to report that my recommendation to have long-time member Dave Thomas fill the vacant Board of Governor s seat was unanimously approved by the BOG. Dave brings a wealth of knowledge and management, he has a real, can do attitude. The appointment is for 1 year and hopefully he will throw his hat in for next year s elections. I d like to apologize to all of you who have received erroneous HYC bills or not received it yet, we ve had a glitch in our computerized billing system. If you wish, you can come down to the club to pay and pick up your new cards or call the office to make an over the phone payment and have the cards sent to you. For those of you, who have received your billing, please send your payment so that we can send you your new card. In closing, I hope to see you all at the General Membership meetings, the 3rd Tuesday of the month, so that you can get first hand information on what the Board is doing for you and the club and to hear from the different committee heads. Food will be served and the bar will have specials, so there s no excuse! See you all at the club, Tony Miller Commodore 5

9 R.C. Sail Lyn Silva February 2014 Ahoy there... Hope everyone has recovered from the holidays and are getting their boats ready for season opener weekend on February 15 & 16!!!! The Waikiki Yacht Club Beer Can Bash will take place on Saturday 2/15 and Hawaii Yacht Club Koko Head Race will take place on Sunday 2/16. The Koko Head race will be the first race in the HYRA series, so be sure to register on Regatta Network and start racking up the points! All our races, except Friday night, can be found on Regatta Network. This central location will have the NOR, SI, view who has already registered for the race, make payments and it allows Race Committee to accurately calculate standings for better accountability. Check out the website at and click on Calendar. This lists all the races in the county! Pretty cool! Unfortunately, the Sweetheart Race has been postponed for another date. Stay tuned Our Friday Night Races are still a success; however, the wind has not been our friend. At 5-7 knots, it makes for a long night! I m glad to see it has not squashed the enthusiasm of the boats & crew from stopping by HYC to enjoy burgers on the grill and dancing the night away to our lively bands! (See calendar in this bulletin for band line up) On Thursday January 23, the HYRA Spring Meeting took place. At this meeting, the HYC delegates voted to have Koko Head, Rabbit Island and Pokai Bay as our clubs races that will count toward season points. During this meeting several topics of importance were discussed that you should be aware of All boats owners must be a member of US Sailing. Rule 55 Trash Disposal. Broken sail stops made of yarn or rubber bands that fall into the water are trash, even if they are biodegradable. Putting sail stops in the water breaks rule 55. However, rule 55 can be changed in the sailing instructions to permit their use; see rule 86.1(b). The change should also be noted in the Notice of Race; see rule J1.2(1). HYC supports sustainability for our oceans but there is technically not a biodegradable sail stop on the market and by not banding, it may become a safety issue for the crew and boat. US Coast Guard Boating Safety Course Any boat that is operated with a 9 hp motor and over, the individual driving must have a Captain s license as of July This is a one-time license and administrated by the Coast Guard. Keep an eye out for classes at HYC. On March 29 & 30, 2014 will be the Annual Pokai Bay Race. As in years past, you can either raft up in Pokai Bay with your fellow sailors or dock at Ko Olina Marina for a fee. The cost to dock at Ko Olina will be $2.00 per foot and you can call the Marina with your credit card information. No charge to your card until after you have pulled into the slip! Details will be in the NOR and at skippers meeting on March 26. Be sure to let us know your plan, so we can make reservations ahead of time for your boat. Lyn Silva Rear Commodore for Sail US sailing ratings All boats ratings were sent to US Sailing in an effort to eliminate local PHRF committees and become more transparent. IF you have not received an from US Sailing as of yet, contact them with your US Sailing member number and they can assist you to obtain a Certificate. 9

11 Junior Sailing February 2014 Scott Melander We had a windy and cool Hawaii Youth Sailing Association El Toro Clinic on Jan 4 and 5th in Kaneohe. The northerly winds kept things from getting too warm for the 24 el toro sailors on the bay. Ryan Murray had some great photo moments from the day and Nolan Laramore had a good regatta on the 2nd day of the clinic. We ve had new Associate Members Kent and Phyllis Adams with their son Chad taking adult sailing lessons in our Cal 20. They are from Alaska and will be visiting Hawaii in the winter. It has been a fun set of lessons and we ve had southerly winds almost every sail. Upcoming on the schedule are the beginning of spring sailing classes on Saturday February 15th and the beginning of high school sailing on Monday February 10. Schools practicing at Hawaii YC this year include Sacred Hearts, Kamehameha, UH Lab, St Andrew s Priory, and ASSETS. 12 Cruising & Voyaging Ed Abbot by Cindy Scheopner The Cruising and Voyaging Society opened the new year with New Fleet Captain Ed Abbot at the monthly meeting Tuesday, January 7. Former HYC Commodore Sterling Lau described his trip to the America s Cup in San Francisco, where he encountered several HYC members also enjoying the race. CVS members joined in the Volunteerfest on Sunday, January 12. The event was to thank HYC members who volunteer to help with events. The free food and music was a thank you for the past, while sign-up sheets were an encouragement to future projects. The weather discouraged some skippers but three HYC boats joined in the MLK weekend cruise to Moloka i: Jim Byxbee on Point Given, Leon Fedenczuk on Alchemy and Sherwood and Pam Brixey on Moku Lani. Well done to all cruisers! Those who remained on Oahu attended the brunch Sunday, January 19, which filled most of the tables on the lanai with lively conversation. After the food, some members migrated into the bar area to watch football playoffs on the large screen TV. Welcome to new associate members Kent Phyllis Adams from Alaska. Everyone is welcome to attend the next meeting Tuesday, February 4 on the lower level of HYC at 6:30 pm. Former club manager Chris Laletin will tell about acquiring 40-foot trimaran Jaz in Massachusettes, taking delivery, outfitting and a three-week sail from Cape Cod canal to Chesapeake via the Long Island Sound. The destination for a President s Day weekend cruise will also be discussed at the meeting. The February brunch is Sunday, February 16 at 9:30 am in the Galley. 16 One of the many faces of rules compliance My first experience with a yacht racing rule violation was with my grandfather on his S&S yawl, En Avant in June We drifted into a government mark at the head of the Chesapeake s Sassafrass river. He immediately sailed to the race committee to retire and took care not to interfere with anyone racing. Later, I saw a red streak of paint and learned two things the Racing Rules of Sailing were unforgiving; and two, the only choice of a Corinthian yachtsman, whether anyone saw the violation or not, was to withdraw. A year later, while racing Blue Jays at the Conancicut Yacht Club in Rhode Island, I was paired with an advanced older skipper who was a prominent son of the community. It was a morning race with fog, little wind, and an adverse current on the final upwind leg. I suggested we drop anchor to keep from going backwards on the final leg. As the time limit neared, Eric said he needed to win to stay atop season s points and would I paddle discreetly from leeward. I refused, and he said steer for the finish, and started paddling. I was appalled. The wind finally came up and we finished first and put the boat away. The instructor congratulated us and noted we were the only ones to drop anchor. It was a strange tense moment. We had cheated. Eric knew it--as did I. I left the club on the verge of tears, vowing never to sail with him again. On a recent Friday night race, winds were light and yet we scampered through the fleet rounding Diamond Head buoy first, but soon to be passed by Cazan, then Boomerang. The wind died altogether about 2015 hours. Yet, we drifted slowly by Firefly which looked aground-but we were just in a friendly eddy. By 2100 hours we were drifting sideways towards the ledge rather than the finish. A boat swept by us, with their main backwinded! Obvious to us their engine was on and engaged. Aye Carumba! They withdrew. I jibed the main a few times to get some steerage not enough to break the rules. The crew let it be known they were hungry and thirsty. I jibed the main a few more times (not more than once per wave/ripple). More talk about dropping out: hunger, missing dinner with family, and kid s bedtimes. We talked about our impressive record because we rarely, if ever, drop out. I flapped the main again soon it was fanning a clear violation. Then we saw three boats rocking behind us. We sculled a little (another violation), then started rocking like a baby in a basinet and began to move. We heard Commodore Lange on the bullhorn, YOU MAY WISH TO CONSIDER RULE 42 KINETICS! Was that a warning, had he seen us or them? A little breeze came up just enough it always does, by then we were pregnant and showing, but could not admit it hours. TWO PITCHERS. Saturday morning I thanked Commodore Lange for running the race. He mentioned he witnessed some wonderful Corinthian behavior when a boat dropped out for kinetics violations. I mentioned that we had been very kinetic, pumping the main to get steerage. I put my guilt aside because I had to get to work on an important project. No withdrawal--another mistake. I then forgot what my conscience was telling me. Our hearts tell us wrong from right, it s our internal righting mechanism just like a keel. On Monday afternoon I got a text from our skipper. I immediately called Commodore Lange to Retire After Finishing (RAF). I m not proud of the 66 hour delay, but also felt compelled to set the record straight and rectify the situation. I humbly beg your pardon for our actions Friday Night last. It was entirely my weakness. By the way, our instructor came to the house and asked why I was so upset after my first day in the program. I choked on my sobs, spilled the beans and withdrew for us. It was good to be 9. Sincerely, Charles Barclay and the crew of Whisper. 16
