3 Commodore Charles Barclay Aloha Members, Congratulations to all the yachts, skippers, crews, families and hosts of Transpac! July was probably a $60,000 week for the Club compared to what is typically a $90,000 month. It was very busy, and very exciting. Elsewhere you will read about the accomplishments and the fun and frolic of the 2011 Transpac. I want to briefly take the time to recognize just a few (I only have 500 words) of the many, many people who made this event quite special this year. First, Carl Gehringer, aka Gilligan, was the Vice Chair for the Honolulu Committee. He worked tirelessly, got frustrated at times with the impending deadlines and the size of the to-do list, but when it all started, Carl was magnificent. All the hard work done ahead of time was evident. Carl leads the Honolulu Committee in Vice Commodore Ron Pestel worked like a demon for days on end; Ron, you got it done! Miles Anderson and Barbara Silvey made sure all the boats were hosted, and sent out progress updates once the race started. Thank you, without your efforts, the racers would have arrived at just another island in the Pacific. Howie and Barbara Mednick, their voices were Transpac this year on the mic and around the Club. Hospitality starts with the welcome and Alohaaa from the balcony of the Hawaii Yacht Club. Norma Jean Cavell welcomed people to the Hawaii Yacht Club with her island charm. Many will remember Norma Jean and her hospitality crew. Sunni Danforth and her crew on the store did remarkable work bringing in goods and selling them. Charlie Danforth got the Officers On Deck and kept the Club property intact when the rum flowed. Chris Laletin, General Manager of Hawaii Yacht Club, brought his hospitality expertise to the Club and it really showed from the fruited water at the entrance to the set up of the facility for the Okole Maluna Party. Marienne McClure, Linda Powell, and Rob Santanello and the good ship Aurora for their escort service of nearly a fourth of the vessels into the harbor 12 altogether. And Michele Hanson and team for decorating the Club house. So many compliments came forth I was proud to be a member. A few items: The Lahaina Race is on. Joseph Shacat has been working with the Lahaina Harbormaster to accommodate as many vessels as possible. Enter early so we can forward a good count. Marty Loo has suggested and now it comes to pass there will be El Toro races in August. Also want to report a few personnel changes: Robbie Santanello has switched from Rear Commodore for Power to Port Captain; the venerable Al Bento is our new Rear Commodore for Power; and Rear Commodore for Sail, Joseph Shacat is resigning in August to pursue graduate school. Thanks all for your outstanding work on behalf of Hawaii Yacht Club. See you on the water. Questions or concerns, please contact me at (808) or kbh.harbormaster@gmail.com. 5 Rear Commodore for Power Robbie Santanello Fishing Aloha, Robbie here making my last entry into the bulletin as Rear Commodore, Al Bento the old man in the sea will be taking my place as I move on the Port Captain position again. They told me in the Marines you go where you are needed most to benefit your unit and so I am off to the pastures of Port Captain one more time. Before I go I want to mention some things, the winner of the last fishing contest was Mahalo with a nice size Ahi way to go Art. Next is all of the volunteers that made Transpac what it was this year, spectacular, what an event! Ron Pestel and his Crew through the best party I ve seen in years here, all of the Transpac sailors raved about it! Hawaii Yacht Club members should be proud of this event because it was epic in every, portion, from entertainment to hospitality, I listened to many great compliments. Please take a minute to think about this club and what it means to many of our members, take the time to do something special for the club, volunteer, sign a new member up or just make a positive change in the club. Remember every little bit helps a past president once had a great quote ask not what your club can do for you; but what you can do for your club. Help out make a difference if we work together it will only get better. One last thing Hal Rainwater and his Crew need to be recognized for there contribution to the docks and the time they puts in. Also Pete Richards, his Crew, and so many more that really put in outstanding efforts you know who you are THANK YOU ALL! Robbie Santanello Rear Commodore for Power

6 Notice to Members of Proposed Hawaii Yacht Club Bylaw Amendments In the Commodore s July 13 th letter to members that was included with the last quarterly billing statement, one of the changes to reduce costs was to publish proposed amendments to our Bylaws in the Hawaii Yacht Club s Bulletin instead of separate mailings, whenever it was possible, while complying with existing Bylaws. With that in mind, in this issue of the Bulletin, the following proposed amendments have been approved by the Board of Governors for your consideration. Each boxed paragraph is the justification for the amendments that would require a single yea or nay vote. Underlined text is new. Deleted text is bracketed and struck through. To make it easier to skim and find proposed text changes, the text requiring change is slightly larger. At a designated General Membership or Special meeting (in this case, August 16, 2011) a ballot will be issued only to Voting Members in Good Standing. To be in Good Standing, members must be current with financial obligations to the Club (dues, moorings, etc, paid up), not in violation of Club Bylaws or Standing Rules and not suspended. On the ballot issued at the meeting you will vote on 4 proposed changes: #1 is to increase dues #2 is to allow members, who volunteer, to receive Club mailings electronically such as or fax. #3 is to add a new membership category called International #4 is to change how intermediate member dues and initiation fees are applied #1 The Commodore has written in previous Bulletins and his July 13 th letter to members that our circumstances require that we increase revenues and continue to control costs. The Board of Governors wants you to consider a dues increase of $15/month for Regular Members to be applied proportionally to other member categories (resulting in a $27.27% across-the-board increase). XV. FEES A. Dues and initiation fees. I.Fee for the payment of membership dues quarterly and semi-annually shall be $10 (Ten Dollars) payable at the rate of $2.50 per quarter or $5.00 semi-annually. The annual dues costs for Membership in the HYC shall be as follows: a. Regular Member $ b. Senior Member $ c. Life Member $ d. Intermediate Member $ e. Social Member $ f. Associate Member $ g. Junior Member without voting member parents $ h. Corporate $ i. Military $ II.The Membership initiation fees for the Hawaii Yacht Club shall be as follows: a. Regular Member $ b. Senior Member $ c. Social Member $ None d. Associate Member $ e. Junior Member without voting member parents $ III.The Temporary Membership fee for a visiting yachtsman shall be $55.00 for each 30-day period. a. Temporary Membership for yachtsmen affiliated with a recognized yacht Club for the purpose of mooring is $8.00 per week. b. Temporary Membership for yachtsmen NOT affiliated with a recognized Yacht Club for the purpose of mooring is $15.00 per week. IV. Corporate Membership: No initiation fees and dues of $ per year for four (4) non-voting membership cards plus $ per year for each additional member. #2 The purpose of amending the bylaws in these three sections is to reduce postage costs of mailing to members - who volunteer to receive them - using an electronic method such as or fax. 6

7 in Article I, Section 1, D. Provisions for Removal and/or Filling vacancies of Officers. II. An elected Officer may be removed from office by a motion or impeachment, or petition, approved by a two-thirds vote by secret ballot of the Voting Members present at a meeting identified for that purpose. Notification of such action shall be electronically transmitted or mailed to all voting Members at least ten (10) days prior to the meeting. The Officer shall be first presented with a letter setting forth the charges as stated in the petition. Said petition shall be signed by at least ten percent (10%) of the Voting Members. This letter shall be delivered at least ten (10) days prior to the meeting. Before a vote may be taken, the Officer shall be afforded a reasonable amount of meeting time to answer such allegations. in ARTICLE IV, SECTION 1. Regular and Special Meetings C. Special meetings of the General Membership may be called by the Commodore, three members of the Board of Governors or by petition signed by at least twenty-five (25) voting members, and upon fifteen (15) days notice to the Membership electronically transmitted or by mail. in ARTICLE VI AMENDMENTS, SECTION 3 Submission to the Membership. B. Proposals for changes in the Bylaws shall be printed, together with the Board of Governors recommendation of the proposed changes, and electronically transmitted or mailed to the General Membership at least fifteen (15) days prior to the date of the meeting at which the proposal or proposals shall be voted upon. #3 The purpose of this proposed International membership category is for revenue generation purposes. The reason for not just bringing in the new members as associates is that we can provide certain elements of membership differently to this class, as well as the increased cost to maintain their memberships with foreign addresses. C. International Membership V. International Members are non-voting members and shall be granted the privileges of: c. Inviting guests to the Club within the limits stated in the Standing Rules. d. Participating in all recreational Club activities and attending any Regular or special General Membership Meeting as a non-voting participant, except as a committee chair person. e. Using the Hawaii Yacht Club facilities for thirty (30) days each calendar year. f. Issued a hard Hawaii Yacht Club card. VI. International Membership may be conferred upon applicants without previous status as a voting member by the Chairperson of the Membership Committee, subject to the following conditions / requirements: g. Applicants must be 18 years of age. h. Applicants must prepare and submit a Hawaii Yacht Club membership application to the Membership Chair. i. Applicants must not reside on the Island of Oahu for more than sixty (60) days each calendar year j. Applicants must not be legal or permanent residents of the island of Oahu. k. Applicants must pay all initiation fees and dues stipulated in the Standing Rules. l. Applicants must pay the pro-rated dues for the remainder of the year. Any dues already paid will be credited toward the applicant's International Membership dues. #4 Presently the Intermediate membership category is structured so that it is too expensive for younger members. The goal is to bring them in younger with a reduced membership fee but keep them as members over a longer period of time. For example, if the membership dues were $30 per quarter, and we also charged $30 per quarter for initiation fee, they would have paid in their initiation fee in five years. They could continue to be an intermediate member until age 28, but after paying in the full $600 (at today s initiation fee) they would no longer be charged the $30 quarterly initiation fee. They still would pay their dues. This vests their interest in the Club. 7

8 D. Intermediate Membership VII. Intermediate Members are non-voting members and shall be granted the privileges of: m. Paying 50% of dues and initiation fees paid by Regular Members. n. Inviting guests to the Club within the limits stated in the Standing Rules. o. Holding only appointive offices within the structure of the Club and serving on all Hawaii Yacht Club committees unless specifically precluded by these Bylaws. p. Participating in all recreational Club activities and attending any regular or special General Membership meeting as a non-voting participant. Intermediate Membership may be conferred upon an applicant by majority vote of the Board of VIII. Governors, subject to the following conditions / requirements: q. Applicants must be between 18 and 28 years of age. r. If the applicant is not currently a Junior member, he / she must: s. Submit a completed Hawaii Yacht Club application form. t. Be a full-time student or a member of the Armed Forces or obtain the written endorsements of two Voting Members who are in good standing and have been members of the Club for six (6) month or more. u. Be posted for thirty (30) days for review and comments by the General Membership. v. Applicants must be endorsed and recommended by the Membership Committee. w. Applicants must pay current initiation fees and dues. IX. Junior Members who apply within two months of their 18th birthday will be given a credit toward the initiation fee of $50.00 per complete year of Junior Membership. The total amount of this credit cannot exceed 50% of the current initiation fees. X. Intermediate Members must convert to Regular Membership before their 28th birthday or relinquish their membership in the Hawaii Yacht Club. 9 Aloha Members and Visitors Alike! General Manager Chris Laletin Adrenalin is a wonderful thing. Some of us are adrenalin junkies and it s fantastic what you can accomplish when you are pumped up. Imagine the sailors setting up for the starts in California, hearts pounding, everyone wanting to be in the same spot at the same time for a perfect start with clean air ahead, screaming commands, grinding wenches, calling distances and rights of way, the count down is ticking and KABOOM the cannon goes off. We are on our way to Hawaii. Then the adrenalin rush is over, for the moment at least. Everyone settles down and into his or her rhythm and then the reality sets in: we have 2200 miles to go, better pace ourselves. Get ready for the Adrenalin pumping sleigh ride through the Molokai Channel to the Diamond Head Buoy. The big guns hit the start line on July 9th, and the pressure to be first over is tremendous. These monster sleds of the likes of Magnitude 80, Bella Mente, Pendragon 6, Medicine Man and others, are the rocket ships or our mono-hull fleets and the excitement of pushing them over the limit is certainly not for the faint of heart. Or should I say they are for the adrenalin junkies. For the racers it is an exciting time. But lets not forget all of the volunteers here in Hawaii that were also in a race to make sure everything was ready to welcome in the boats in with our Spirit of Aloha and Hospitality. We could not pull off a flawless week of organization and entertainment without our volunteers. I guess you can say that most of us volunteers who were on deck 24-7 are adrenalin junkies too. It was truly amazing that we accomplished everything we had to. I am so proud to stand alongside the many HYC members who stepped up, dug their heals in and put in the spectacular efforts to once again show the world that our Members and our Aloha Dock and HYC is the club of choice for cruising and racing sailors alike. No body does it better! By all accounts this event was a record breaker for HYC with the Aloha Dock full, lots of hosted parties and a sold out Luau, exactly what we needed. Thank you to everyone that participated. Like all adrenalin rushes, there is that afterwards feeling when it s all over that leaves you a little blue. So lets all take a few days to savor the memories, talk lots of story, rest our weary bodies, and get refreshed, so we can be ready to take on the next exciting challenge before us. And that would be to grow our membership as we continue the volunteer efforts while we renovate and repairing items around the club. We need to make this place shine like the trophies in our display cases. I am seeking volunteers that can help to refurbish the lower galley kitchen cabinets. Even though Transpac is over, our race at HYC is in full swing. Like all races, my adrenalin is pumping; I m excited (and with your support) to drive the Hawaii Yacht Club to the top of the leader board. Every race crew works as a team, with a common goal. Our race team, and by that I mean you the HYC members, are in the race. The finish line goal is to put HYC back on the top of the leader board; in appearance, in Aloha Spirit, in Teamwork and in O hana. We are doing it together. My and cell phone are now activated and you may contact me at or HYC-GM@hawaii.rr.com Mahalo and happy sailing. 14 Junior Sailing Scott Melander The US Sailing Junior Olympic Festival for Honolulu was held July in Waikiki in the 420, Laser, El Toro, and Topper Fleets. The first three days fourteen 420s sailed 10 races with the spinnaker and trapeze. The wind was a little light so not much trapezing happened but all boats flew spinnaker. The race was also a qualifyer for the US Sailing Junior Nationals which will be held in New Jersey in mid-august. The last two days of the event included the Laser, Topper, and El Toro fleets. On Thursday the regatta is named after Margaret Haig, a great volunteer for youth sailing in HI and on Friday the regatta is named after Connie Smales. The Laser race was also a qualifyer for the Nationals and congratulations to Morgan Merrill for the win. To follow all the sailors headed to New Jersey, check out the US Sailing website at: ChubbJrChampionships.htm Warren for the great dinner. The prizes were donated by US Sailing and Art Nelson Sailmaker. The qualifyers for the Triple Handed Youth Sailing Nationals were hosted by Pearl Harbor YC on July 20/21. The regatta was in Rhodes 19 with spinnaker and it was breezy for the practice day and regatta. Congratulations to Zachary Kaan for winning the event with the HYC team of Mitchell Woodrow, Katherine Hughes, and Kukii Falahee coming in 2nd. The summer sailing classes are ongoing and we are having a good time with our sailing fleets. There are lots of opportunities to sail, come on down and join us! Upcoming events include the Kaneohe YC hosted trapeze and spinnaker regattas on August 3rd and 4th and the Laser races at KYC on August 6 and 7. The Banquet for the event was held July 17 at Hawaii Yacht Club with Commodores from HYC and WYC in attendance. Awards were given out for each division and the dinner was great too. 16 Membership Marty Loo Aloha and Welcome Aboard! It has been so busy the last few months I missed getting my column in for the July Bulletin. Since I wrote my last column Twelve New Members have been interviewed. Unfortunately, with the 30 day posting requirement these members had to wait till the August meeting to become full-fledged card carrying members. All new members names and photos will be posted in the September bulletin. They have been issued temporary cards and were reminded about Transpac and the need to volunteer. And volunteer they did! They have been on the gate, in the ship s store, hospitality so I would be surprised if you hadn t seen them around the club. Check out their bios on the New Members board, they will all be introduced at the August General Membership Meeting. They are a great bunch as are the other members who have come on board. By the way, if you do see any of the new soon-tobe members walking around the club, please try to introduce yourselves and help them to get involved. New members won t know how to help unless we get to know them and give them some advice on where help is needed. If you have a spare place on your boat during your Sunday sails, try asking them to go. Club membership is a family of sorts and everyone likes to be included. Transpac was great, I wish we could do it every year. The beautiful boats and the members getting out to help in droves, just like we always have. This month will be extremely busy, besides me introducing a slew of new members, your nominating committee will be seeking out members to run for office, let s all get involved again. Joseph is reintroducing Adult El Toro Racing on the first three Monday nights in August so if you want to be a part of it, get your dinner together, come down and bar-be-que and race an El Toro. I have offered my assistance in getting it off the ground. More details have been posted about the race and it should be fun for both the participants and spectators. I will see you on the start line! I hate to sound like a broken record but we have to all get involved, keep our club rolling in the right direction. Each time I talk with one of our new members I get excited about the future of our club. They are friendly, nice people who are experiencing our Aloha Spirit for the first time and it is such a treat to watch, by the way, talking to them will give you the same feeling. We will be having our second Meet and Greet for prospective new members on August 27th. This was tried last month and, considering the lack of advertising (my fault), we had quite a turn out. These prospective members didn t have sponsors and had the opportunity to meet members and get sponsored. They were then interviewed. If you happen to find someone that is interested in the club, stop at the office or grab me and get a business card, I will handle it from there. The more new members we get the more fun we can have. See you around the club! 18 Before The Mast ESCOURT VESSEL #4 fountain head Aloha yachtsmen. Welcome to HYC and the 46th TransPac Yacht Race. In 1969 all of Honolulu came to watch race boats, at the finish line of the TransPacific yacht race off Diamond Head buoy. People and cars lined the cliffs of Diamond Head Road near the light house, to get the best view of the 2,300 mile race. Local radio DJs, J Aku Head Papule and Lucky Luck came over the coconut wireless from KGMB with hourly RACE reports and updates. Islanders came from all over, da North Shore, Hauula, Pupukea, Nanakuli, Kahala, and Hawaii Kai. All to see these big sail machines racing the winds of paradise. At Ala Wai harbor in 1969 they would close the roads at TransPac Row. This was reserved for racers, families, volunteers, and locals to walk. and see, the visiting yachts. There was food booths set up with ono grinds. Lei sellers, t-shirts, Hawaiian music, parties, and parties, and of course lots and lots of Mai- Tai. I remember my Aunty saying to her friend Marge, ho all these haoles, they get really big boats YEAH!!! TransPac is the oldest and biggest sporting event in Hawaii for 100 YEARS. Bigger than the PRO BOWL. This has sometimes been called the Golden Age of Sail. Boats who came were: BLACK FIN, WINDWARD PASSAGE, RAGTIME, MIR, GREYBEARD, KAMALII, KAOLOHA You are all NOW part of TransPac history too. Remember to LIVE ALOHA. ALWAYS BE PONO. Aloha. Mark C. Olsen FLOTSAM & JETSAM Transpac 2011 has drawn to a close, and as usual, it was more exhausting than running a marathon for most involved. It was a solid week of switching between working and partying. Although there were those who mostly worked, and those who mostly partied. Everyone did a great job, but I have to single out Suni Danforth for her work with the Ships Store. I believe it is a safe bet to say that the receipts from the store for July 2011 will be a record. I must also mention Howie Mednick, the Voice of Transpac. He tirelessly called in each and every boat that entered the Ala Wai, no matter what time of day or night. Kudos also to Michele Hanson and her vision and execution for the decorations for the Okole Maluna Party. I will definitely be calling her when I have to give a party! The best story to come out of Transpac 2011 was the one about the kayaker whose kayak had overturned. His paddle broke, and he had been drifting for hours in the waters off Diamond Head. He was spotted by the crew of one of the Transpac entries who had the Diamond Head finish in their sights. Instead of heading for the finish, they turned around and rescued the kayaker. They may have lost some time, but they saved a life. Ironically, the name of the boat that saved the kayaker was Second Chance from Channel Islands Yacht Club. Also in this Transpac, was Katana, skippered by Dr. Laura Schlessinger. Many of you may know her from her call in radio talk show. She is on satellite radio, so we here in Hawaii don t get to hear her, but she broadcast two of her shows from the upper deck balcony of HYC, and gave several very nice plugs to her listeners about HYC. My grandson, Austin, who visits from Florida in the summer, signed up for junior sailing morning sessions and loved it so much, he decided to sign up for the afternoon sessions as well. Scott Melander and his staff do a fabulous job, not only teaching sailing, but making it fun, and it s the fun part that makes the students want to learn more. I would highly recommend putting your kids or grandkids in Junior Sailing. If you have no kids, at least support the Junior Sailors by coming out to Seafest and spend some money or make a donation. This year Seafest will be at HYC, on October 23, Webmaster Mike Phillips celebrated his 50th birthday at HYC the Sunday before the beginning of Transpac. The decorations for his party included some beautiful table centerpieces that he graciously left to be used for sprucing up the club for Transpac. I bet most of you don t know that Mike plays the guitar and sings. I didn t either until he was the entertainment for his party. Actually, he had other entertainment, but he opened the show, and it really wasn t bad, in fact, it was pretty good. Thanks for the great birthday party, Mike, and remember, 50 is the new 30. Salsa nights, which are usually on Sunday, have been a great boon for the club. The band is super, and they have a following of salsa dancers who are fun to watch. If you don t salsa, or dance, just come out to listen to the band (and have a drink of two). They have a great beat and you won t be able to keep your feet from tapping. The next wine tasting will be August 25, at 6:15 pm. Be sure to call Howie at to reserve your place. Barbara Mednick Marine Surveyors covering the Pacific since 1973 Mike Doyle, Ltd.
