4 Commodore Charles Barclay Aloha Members, During most General Membership Meetings the Treasurer assessments. That is the last thing I want to see happen. I gives a financial report. Rarely however, will you read cannot speak more plainly. the financials in the Bulletin. This month begins a feature regarding Club finances. The Commodore takes the first crack at it below. Hawaii Yacht Club Financial Situation: In the latter half of 2010 the Club lost $38,783. That occurred with $1.035 million in revenues and about $1.074 million in expenses. We still have little more than $100,000 in the bank. We had a net loss of 33 members or just less than 10% of the regular members. Since 2004, with some years better than others, our expenses dropped from $1.51 million to $1.074 million in Previous Commodores and Boards have certainly cut costs! However, at this stage we simply cannot cut our way back to profitability. Likewise our inventory has declined over the same period of time so that we carry fewer goods in the store, bar and restaurant. Currently we spend about $85,000 per month and take in around $78,000. None of the employees have exceptional compensation packages. Nor do we have expensive perks for executives (free coffee and soda). These figures vary each month with the number and success of events and timing of membership dues. Here are some particulars from our income statements and balance sheets: June 2010 YTD (as of 6/30/10) December 2010 YTD (as of 12/31/10) Net Income (8,042) 122 (4,286) (38,783.16) Approx Cash $164,000 $105,000 Reg. Members People make the argument that we are a not for profit (NFP), this is true. It is also true for every NFP it must make money in order to fulfill its mission. To avoid closing our doors or assessing members we need to do the following to fulfill our mission of promoting the enjoyment of and access to ocean recreation opportunities. 1. Make money [positive net income], 2. Replenish cash reserves 3. Fund a capital improvement fund 4. Invest in things that will make us more money in the future. That is a tall order, especially since we cannot run out of cash along the way. Our plan of action is to increase membership and pay attention to the details of the business. Several things we are doing to turn this ship around: 1. Everyone bringing forth a proposal will be asked the following: How will this impact revenue? How will it impact expenses? How much will it cost? 2. The Mooring Committee will propose fee increases to bring rates in line with the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor and Waikiki Yacht Club. 3. We started resource conservation including replacing inefficient light bulbs, and conducting a water leak test. 4. We are reviewing and renegotiating contracts were possible to better reflect our needs and current competitive conditions. 5. I am making the call to you to volunteer. We need your skills to enhance our offering and bring in more members. I have exceeded my 500 word limit. We will put more on the website. Please check out hawaiiyachtclub.org. Contact me at kbh.harbormaster@gmail.com or (808) with ideas, concerns or questions. Parties bolstered December s revenue and made our losses less. However, if we continue on this path the Club will be endangered by summer. At that point, there is no choice Charles Barclay Commodore HYC but to submit proposals for hefty dues increases and special 4

7 Membership Carl Geringer Dear Valued Members! We continue to add new members each month, and the quality of our new membership is outstanding! The new membership committee is being formed with a strong marketing focus. I will announce the new members of the committee next month. New Members: numerous boats, and presently owns an Ala Wai themed restaurant in Japan (it is beautiful by the pictures). His present boat is a 42 sailboat named Mamenchisaurus. They were both sponsored by Dennis Cooney and John Morton. For February we already have three members posted and a fourth will be posted shortly. During January, the Board voted to approve the following new members. Jim and Paige Beck. Jim and his wife just moved to Hawaii and he is involved in engineering projects in the pacific. He is the caretaker of a 43 Marine Trader and is interested in all aspects at the Club. They were sponsored by Ron DuBois and Brian Moore. Dietrich and Leila Lammers. Dietrich is a retired engineer from the European Space Agency and worked closely with NASA. They own a 24 Beneteau sailboat and have their new slip in the Ala Wai. They are both looking forward to being active in the Club. Their sponsors were Ron Uryga and Antje Grufwewald. At the December Board meeting I presented to the Board a list of annual honorary memberships for 2011 to be voted upon at the meeting. I am pleased to report that these invitations will be handed out shortly. We will keep you posted on those that have accepted. Mitch Burns and I are now getting down to the business of setting up our 501(c)3 organization. More details will follow, and we will announce the name of this entity in the next bulletin and provide more details. Looking forward to a productive Carl Geringer Masahiro & Rumi Nishikawa. 9 Rear Commodore for Power Robbie Santanello Fishing Aloha, It s another great month at Hawaii Yacht Club and the fish are biting. Presidents day tournament is coming on February 19th so get ready for a great fishing tournament. Mitch s Sushi Tournament is the following month of March on the 12th and 13th. By the time you read this the keiki fishing tournament will have been competed on January 29th. We hope all boaters participated in the contest. This past month we had the fortune of having two Marines from Wounded Warrior fish with us. Joe Serino and Elmer Ugarte from the United States Marine Corp wounded in Iraq were able to go fishing and surfing with Hawaii Yacht Club members George Longshore and myself. Although no fish were caught a great time was had, these men sustained almost fatal injuries in Iraq, it made us appreciate how lucky in life we all are with their great attitudes. We hope to have them return next year and make this an annual visit to Hawaii Yacht Club. Commodore Barkley is presently working on having Wounded Warrior visit us next month. It would be great if Hawaii Yacht Club members would participate in this event as it is a truly rewarding day for these men and women. Being a veteran I would like to ask all of you to come out and enjoy all these veterans smiling faces. Please remember that Senoritas Tournament comes on April 16th and 17th so get your teams ready and the wahines warmed up to catch fish. We will be capping the Senoritas at 40 boats so get your entries in early. Keep your lines in the water and your bait on your hooks. Well see you next month. Robbie Santanello Rear Commodore for Power

10 Aloha! Junior Sailing Scott Melander Coming up on the are the opening day laser races on February 5, 12, and 20th. These are open to anyone and are invitationals. The first race is in Kaneohe and we hope for 20 boats on the line. Above Lydia going upwind January was full of clinics for sailors in the el toro and the Flying Junior in Kaneohe and Keehi. On the 8th and 9th there were twenty five el toro sailors in northerly winds on Kaneohe Bay. The sailors practiced boat speed, boat handling, and starting drills for the two days. Helping out with the clinic was Brent Harrill, a former University of Hawaii sailor and former Stanford coach. He also ran the double handed clinic with the help of the University of Hawaii on January 15/16. Ten Flying Juniors sailed in light winds in Keehi Lagoon and the skills really improved during the two days. Above Dylan Adolpho High school sailing practices begin the week of February 7 with 12 schools planning on hosting teams this year. Schools are allowed up to 16 sailors on Varsity and Junior Varsity in Toppers and 420s. Classes begin on Saturdays for novice, intermediate and racing sailors on Saturday February 19th. Applications are available on the HYC website and there is a discount for HYC members. Adult sailing classes are also offered in our 420 and Cal 20 boats. There is a description of the course and more information on the HYC website. Scott Melander Jr. Sailing Above Yassi Quon 10

12 Cruising & Voyaging Patti Salomon The year has started off in a relaxed way. Cruising opportunities have been dependent on weather. Some days were very nice, affording members with favorable conditions for some great whalewatching. Other times the rain, wind and surf all combined to deter cruising. A cruise to Molokai over the MLK long weekend had to be scrapped when it was predicted that another heavy rain storm would blow through the state during that time period. Disappointing everybody especially Leon, Tom & Rick on Alchemy, being the intrepid sailors that they are! recently sailed their CSY 44 Soggy Paws from Ecuador to Hawaii by way of the Galapagos Islands, Easter Island, Pitcairn Island and the islands of French Polynesia. The presentation was well attended and everybody enjoyed hearing of their experiences backed up by spectacular pictures. Left_ Dave & Sherry McCampbell 12 Above_ Minoru Saito & Eder Gebhardt On Friday Jan 7th we gathered at the club to help Minoru Saito celebrate his 77th Birthday. Saito-San has been sailing and racing for many years, and is currently circumnavigating the globe singlehanded, an amazing feat at any age, but to do it at 77 for the 8th time is truly note-worthy. He will be starting the final leg of his journey to Japan when conditions permit. In his honor we shared Birthday cake and pupus and drank to his health with Sake - his favorite we hear - and we wished him many more birthdays. Thanks to Naomi for the delicious cake, to Ed, Kimmie, for organizing, and to everyone else who contributed pupus to share. Our meeting on Wed. Jan. 19th was brief; we discussed and scheduled our next three cruises. Having taken care of the business part of the meeting, we then had a presentation by seasoned cruisers Sherry & Dave McCampbell, who have Next meeting will be held on Wed. Feb. 16th at 6:00. Following that meeting we expect to have well-known surveyor John Koon talk to us about rigging and rigging stresses. Check the website at hyccruisingsociety.com, click the Bulletin Board button for all the details, and look for posters around the club.
