It was an informative JPYC event. Commodore Karen Harris not only informed the membership of this year s past events and plans for the future, but kept the meeting moving at a tolerable pace. Introductions were brief; Committee reports were brief and a huge amount of information was disseminated in a short period of time at times, it felt like a pep-rally...another testament of Karen s contagious enthusiasm. 3 Boats, Burgees, and Beaches by Beverly Serrell (Des Jardins) My father, Peter Serrell, was an active member of the Balboa Yacht Club in Southern California in the 1940s and 50s. He raced an International 14 called Green Dream. He was always interested in sailing and grew up with boats at his family s winter home in Florida. There are probably many trophies in the Balboa Yacht Club clubhouse with his Peter Serrell s name on them, and I m proud to see the BYC burgee at JPYC in his honor. I grew up playing on the beach in Balboa and Newport, California, but did not take to sailing due to my tendency for sea sickness. I discovered sea kayaking in 1985, and have been enjoying casual paddling in Lake Michigan since then.

Director JPYC Foundation Youth Sailing Program hosted more than 50 young sailors during the inaugural summer.

Race maneuvers and techniques were discussed and practiced.

Gaining confidence through responsibility and teamwork, patience (low wind days), sportsmanship, respect and perseverance.

5 Just Add Water and A Few Sailors and Sailboats Summer 2017 was a spectacular summer! Jackson Park Yacht Club Foundation hosted the first season of Youth Sailing and it was AWESOME Michelle Bartlow - Sailing Director JPYC Foundation Youth Sailing Program hosted more than 50 young sailors during the inaugural summer. Our Youth Sailors and the 12 Bugs were put through the gauntlet of rigging, launching, towing, tacking and gibing. Race maneuvers and techniques were discussed and practiced. Classroom and land instruction proved to be helpful with on-the-water drills, aided by lines, knots, cleats and rigging. Gaining confidence through responsibility and teamwork, patience (low wind days), sportsmanship, respect and perseverance. Fun times included ice cream parties, end of session pot luck and burgee design. A thank you to all our supporters, our instructors Taylor Thompson and Ki- ara Coreas-Rosada. Our counselors-in-trainings, Cora Star, Peri Cooper and Rachel Ward. A big thank you to my assistant instructor who stepped up and be- came a very important member of our staff, Edmond Gueringer, instructing, guiding and mentoring our Youth Sailors. NOTES FROM THE BIKE GHURU Bryan is charging both the women s and men s electric bikes. NOTE: Do not ever let the batteries DRAIN totally. When you take a ride, check the battery power when you return it so that it will be charged for the person riding after you. You can leave bikes hooked to electricity because they DO have an automatic CUT-OFF. Both bikes are in the men s locker room.

Stanchions Safety By Mark Corke Nothing lasts forever, and that includes stanchion guard wires. What sailors should know when it comes to preventive maintenance.

When new, these wires look perfect, the white plastic coated sheathing enhancing the look of almost any boat. But there could be danger lurking, literally, below the surface.

This works perfectly when new, but over time, water will find its way under the core, where time and an absence of oxygen sets up crevice corrosion, slowly eating away the wire.

The weight of a person being thrown against the wire is sufficient to cause the wire to fail, and the crewmember ends up in the drink. A great idea for refurbishing the interior of your boat.

6 Stanchions Safety By Mark Corke Nothing lasts forever, and that includes stanchion guard wires. What sailors should know when it comes to preventive maintenance. Many sailors have deck-edge stanchions interlaced with plastic coated guard wire on their boats. When new, these wires look perfect, the white plastic coated sheathing enhancing the look of almost any boat. But there could be danger lurking, literally, below the surface. That s because, to attach the turnbuckles required for tensioning and adjustment at the ends of the wire, the plastic has to be stripped back exposing the wire core. This works perfectly when new, but over time, water will find its way under the core, where time and an absence of oxygen sets up crevice corrosion, slowly eating away the wire. This corrosion often goes unseen and unnoticed until, one day, the guard wire is called on to prevent someone going over the side. The weight of a person being thrown against the wire is sufficient to cause the wire to fail, and the crewmember ends up in the drink. A great idea for refurbishing the interior of your boat. Use thin vinyl bead-board (HomeDepot) you can cut it, glue it. And it leaves a professional-looking, water-resistant, easy clean surface. Guard wires don t last forever, and they should be periodically inspected. A little rust from weeping from under the ends of the plastic coating may be OK, but if extensive, or the plastic coating is bubbled, a sure indication of extensive corrosion beneath, they should be replaced without delay.
