3 COmmODORE Richard Perkins Last month, I mentioned the repair to the Upper Deck was in progress and the repair should take a couple of weeks. Well, I apologize, it is still on-going as in addition to the dry rot and cracking under the railing posts, live termites were uncovered by the stairs near the Long House. This caused the delay in completing the Upper Deck repair. Since our contract with Terminix was expiring we ve contracted with another company to address the live termites. The Upper Deck repair will be completed by the time you receive this Telltales so member parties/meetings can continue in the Upper Deck. There will be additional repairs started for the termite damage to the Long House but that will not affect the use of the Upper Deck. The termite damage that has been identified so far appears to be focused close to Upper Deck and the galley side of the Long House. We will keep the members updated as we investigate the extent of the damage. The plans for the E-Pier Repair are still scheduled to start in November as we are still working with Sea Engineering to determine an exact date. In advance, I want to thank all members who have slips on E-Pier for your understanding and co o p e ration. G-Pier Repair will also start soon after E-Pier Repair starts to avoid two mobilization charges so more detailed information will be sent out as soon as we have the start dates. Please contact me directly if you have any concerns. For those who missed the Oktober f est Beer Tasting event with Karl maruyama, we had a great turnout and everyone had a fantastic time. We will not have First Friday music next month due to the Annual General membership meeting but we will have one more Friday night music on November 18. We are also working with the Entertainment Committee and galley to have more member events similar to this Oktoberfest event. With the holidays coming up fast we are trying to schedule at least one more member event this year based on the current activities we are running out of available dates. A very successful Lipton Cup One Design Regatta was just held at the club with ten HYRA member clubs from all over the state represented in this regatta. makani Kai Yacht Club was defending champion but they requested that KYC host the event. The weather conditions, with the gusty trade winds, created many challenges for all the boats. Hawaii Kai Boat Club with Lars Von Sydow at the helm, crew Harald Von Sydow and Ken Kaan won this prestigious event with some great sailing. Katie, Jeff Cruise, and Luke Kudray representing KYC came in second with some very close racing. Congratulations to Hawaii Kai Boat Club. A BIG THANKS goes out to Tom Pochereva, the Primary Race Officer (PRO), and all of the members who participated in Race Committee for running a great regatta. Eric Aakhus, KYC Regatta Chair, as well as representing makani Kai Yacht Club in the race deserves a lot of credit for organizing this successful event. I would be remiss if I didn t remind everyone that the Annual General membership meeting is scheduled for November 4. There are more details regarding this meeting later in this Telltales. Please plan on attending so we can establish a quorum early. Happy Thanksgiving and stay safe during the holidays. VICE COmmODORE Tom Wood Aloha all. Often, as we approach the end of the current year, we find that the calendar actually gets busier and that is certainly the case this year. The next two months are filled with a wide variety of activities at your club. First and foremost is our Annual General membership meeting coming up on 4 November. We have a full slate of new officers for next year and two additional members have thrown their hats in the ring as well, so you will have an opportunity to choose amongst multiple candidates for two of the positions. All of the candidates are highly qualified and we are fortunate to have such significant interest in contributing to the management and oversight of club operations. The meeting is a great opportunity to get together and talk about the club and its future, and I hope that many of you can make the time to participate. All Club members are welcome, however only Senior and Life members may vote on issues before the membership. We really need a good turnout so we can establish a quorum and move on with business. The business of the club doesn t start and stop with the elected officers. We have numerous standing committees and a variety of ad hoc committees throughout the year that support the day to day operation as well as the future planning for the club. If you have a desire to be involved in supporting the club and helping to shape the future, please consider giving some of your valuable time to one of those committees in the coming year. We typically need more volunteers than we have so we are happy to have additional people step up. make sure you check the calendar included here in Telltales for more events, and also make sure that your address is up to date at the office. The office sends out a variety of notices to membership, and if your address is not current, you may not be getting all of the information you should. Be safe and have fun at the club and on the water. I look forward to seeing you at the Annual meeting on the 4th. There is a new updated version of BMPs" (Best Management Practices) for boat maintenance at the club. The new "BMPs apply not only to Haul Out but all boat maintenance all year long. Copies of the "BMPs" are available at the front office. REAR COmmODORE Frederic Berg Your B oard of Directors ha s been at work this year with an exceptional number of administrative issues to tackle. We are happy to have Norman Cote on board as our manager now for the past several months. The search for our manager took precious time for the search committee to work on. We continue to work on reducing the impact of Club operations on our neighbors to minimize any opportunity to complain about the very essence of what we do as a Club. To address this you will likely see sound barriers going up for winter maintenance operations this year and there are some new restrictions on the use of water for sanding and cleaning hulls. As some may recall, in February of this year DLNR was in the media regarding their handling of revocable permits. The result of the backlash is that we are now in negotiations with DLNR for a fixed long term lease for the Club s submerged lands. This process may take up to a year to complete as DLNR works through its procedure on long term leases. For those members who use the north hoist, please be assured we have put together a work party to realign the hoist so that gravity will no longer pull boats into the bulkhead as the load is increased on the hoist. We had hoped to complete this work before the winter maintenance commences in the area, but we missed the window and will target February 2017 for getting this work done. The A nnual G eneral m embership m eeting is just around the corner. I would strongly encourage all members to attend this meeting. Individual members care enough about our Club and have had petitions signed to present themselves to run for offices in addition to those presented by the nominating committee. If these members have enough interest in the operations of the Club, then we should all show our support and vote on November 4. This year the galley contract is up for renewal. Now is a good time to voice your opinion on the type of food, the quality of the food, the quality of the service and the hours of operation of our galley service, so the board understands the members perspective of the galley. Please be reminded that inquiries on mooring, wet or dry, waitlists should be addressed to the office and not the Port Captain. The office is hard at work updating the lists, so please have some patience when making your inquiries. The Port Captain serves in a volunteer capacity and is there to assign slips, mostly the temporary assignments for those wanting to remain in the water over night or slip hopping for a bit of time, but also the permanent slip assignments. We are looking for a volunteer to help with triaging maintenance on the sailboats the Club owns. This person would work closely with our Sailing Director, Jesse Andrews on what needs to be done to keep our mostly Junior fleets up and running. This person would find the resources needed to ensure all the necessary maintenance is attended to. If interested, please call me. There is a working draft 2017 schedule that s continued on page 6 3

8 US Sailing Adult Championship, The Clifford D. mallory Cup By mike Van Woerkom Hawaii sailors maddy Kennedy, mike Van Woerkom, morgan Stephenson, and Patrick manuel recently competed in the US Sailing Adult Championship, the Clifford D. mallory Cup. The event is open to one team from each of the eight US Sailing districts, and is an annual regatta hosted by a different club, and sailed in different boats each year. This year it was hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club in beautiful San Francisco in their fleet of J/22s. The event took place October and in that five day period teams experienced five very different sailing conditions; the wind ranged from 1.5 to 20 kts., clear skies to strong rain, and the flooding and ebbing of very strong currents, peaking at nearly three knots. The first day started with morning registration followed by practice in the J/22. We spent the day sailing and learning as much as we could about the boat and the current, the latter being a huge factor to sailing in the bay. The practice day was the most pleasant weather; sunny, in the 70s with 7-10 kts westerly breeze. The team took advantage of the beautiful weather and conditions by sailing out under the Golden Gate Bridge and back into the bay rounding the south tower. Day One of racing was quite a bit colder, with a westerly wind in the 7 kt. range building throughout the day to about 12 kts. Due to a bad weather forecast for the later part of the week and with the intention of completing 20 races in the regatta, the Race Committee squeezed in 8 races on Wednesday. The conditions and racing was great, although very challenging. Calling the lay line to the windward mark was especially difficult with the current, and we had to continue to re-evaluate as the current changed from ebb to flood. Another six races were completed on Day Two. The weather was beautiful with wind building up to around 12 kts by the time we finished racing. With the steady high wind conditions we were expecting the Race committee to run a few more races. The crew was pleasantly surprised when racing was called as it was getting harder and harder to keep up with the changing conditions while keeping a high level of focus on the team s strategies. As predicted, Day Three s weather was not ideal with rain, light wind, and very strong currents upwards of 2.5 to 3 kts. Only two races were completed after being postponed on shore until Race Two on Day Three provide the team with one of the most stressful yet exciting starts of the regatta. The wind was light with max speed about 5 kts. blowing directly against an ebbing 2.5 to 3 kt. current. The fleet found themselves doing everything they could to get above the start line. Unfortunately, as the five minute sequence was sounded, we were about 4 boat lengths below the start line on starboard headed downwind very near the pin. With about 2:50 to go we had not tacked or gybed and were about 2 boat lengths below the line, still headed downwind on starboard and could not make any headway against the current. As the clock ticked down, the stress levels went up, as our boat still was below the start line. With a cool head our skipper called to set the spinnaker as it was our only hope to get above the line before the start of the race. With 1:00 to the start we still had the spinnaker up, on starboard about 1 boat length below the line and 2 boat lengths from the pin. By now the rest of the fleet that had gotten above the line and were setting up on their final approach to the start. The clock continued to count down and at 45 seconds we raised the jib, gybed the spinnaker, dropped the spinnaker pole, dowsed the spinnaker, tacked to starboard right below an oncoming boat, and had a clean start just feet away from the pin at full speed - all thanks to a very calm helmsman and excellent crew work. Though that method of starting isn t recommended it made for a great story and plenty of amazement and laughs from the crew. The evening was capped off by a formal dinner hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club. To promote the spirit of meeting new people crews were split up and given assigned seats which lead to the making of new friends. The final day, Saturday, left us with four races to complete. The wind was very southerly preventing the use of the standard race course directly in front of the St. Francis Yacht Club. This provided the Race Committee with some challenges as there wasn t enough room to set up a race course between the club and the south shipping channel. Instead, a course was made much further out in the bay just west of the iconic Alcatraz Island between the north and south shipping channels. This again posed challenges to the sailors as the currents and conditions were much different than any previous days of the regatta. With another pending storm predicted for late afternoon, Saturday gave us the strongest winds of the regatta with steady kts. occasionally gusting over 20 kts. Generally the wind favored the left side of the course and the current favored the right side so there were some difficult decisions, but it made for a tactically challenging day of racing. As the wind built throughout the day we saw a couple near wipeouts by other teams and one man overboard (the skipper) just 50 yards from the finish line. Overall, we had a great time representing Hawaii. We learned each and every race with the changing conditions, attended a very well run regatta, sailed better each day (even though the results don t exactly show it), and got to experience the challenging and unforgiving conditions of the beautiful San Francisco Bay. Maddie Kennedy, Mike Van Woerkom, Patrick Manuel, and Morgan Stephenson represented the Hawaii Region in the 2016 Mallory Cup. The team raced J22s in San Francisco Bay the week of October 10 finishing 8th after 20 races and a wide range of conditions. Mike Van Woerkom, Maddie Kennedy, Morgan Stephenson and Patrick Manuel 7

9 TENNIS FLEET Donlei Darnell The holiday season is quickly approaching and planning for the fleet holiday dinner will start soon. The fleet dinner will be held in the Long House and catered by the galley. The date is Friday, December 30. There is no tennis tournament in December but the trophy for Season s Points will be awarded at the dinner. In October the theme for the potluck was Oktober Fest and the German food was wunderbar! The tournament earlier in the day had some great hard-fought matches and the winners were: First for the ladies Linnea Brooks; 2nd Lynn Pease; and tied for 3rd Jean Fernie and Sherri Phillips. First for the men was no surprise Greg Siok; 2nd Wayne Jackson; and tied for 3rd Bob meierdiercks and Steve Brooks. November will find the fleet cooks perfecting their chili recipes for the Chili Cook-Off. Last year there were at least eight entries with Steve and Linnea Brooks winning top honors and Linnea told me she is ready to enter again! Watch for the on details and who to call to contact to be a chili entrant. Our very wonderful fleet is always ready to welcome new members, tennis players or not. Spread the word about our fleet so we can share the fun! The Tennis Fleet will miss our long-time fleet member, Jack Aaron. Our sympathy goes out to Sissy Aaron. 11 CAL 20 FLEET Jeff Cruise Aloha from the Cal 20 Fleet! We ve had a busy last few weeks during the tail end of the season. State Keelboat Championships took place on October 8 and 9. This was the largest regatta we ve had in several years, with 15 boats out racing for the weekend! Eight races were completed in a shifty 8-12 knots, and in the end, only four points separated fourth and first place. Hotel California (the Hocharts) took third place, Lucky Bucket (Andrew meade, Kerri Schweibert, and Craig Schifferns) took second and Pilikia (Katie and I) took First! It was a fun weekend, with a great party on Saturday night with live music. And a huge thank you to Phillip Katzman and crew for taking care of Race Committee duties for the weekend. Two weeks after State Keelboat Championships, makani Kai Yacht Club hosted the Lipton Cup One Design Challenge. The regatta was held out of Kaneohe Yacht Club in Cal 20s, with ten boats participating from yacht clubs from around Hawaii. It s been a while since the Cal 20s have had some heavy breeze for racing, and this weekend surely made up for it. The boats competed in knots both days, so there was plenty of action out on the course (as well as a few breakdowns). Eight races were completed, and in the end Hawaii Kai Boat Club took First Place (Ken Kaan, Harald Von Sydow, and Lars Von Sydow). They will be hosting the regatta next year. A huge thanks to makani Kai Yacht Club for hosting the regatta, and hosting the event party on Saturday night at their boat club. And a huge thank you to Tom Pochereva and crew for taking care of Race Committee duties for the weekend. Now it s time to relax a bit for the off-season, and get some work done on the boats. A big mahalo to everyone who volunteered throughout the year and helped make all of our events run so smoothly. And as always, if anyone is looking to get involved with the Cal 20 fleet, please me at Cal20KYC@gmail.com. 14 FISHING FLEET Captain Bill Atherton Aloha Fishing Fleet Well another month passes and another great FF event passes us by. Once again if you missed out you really missed out on this Year End Sand Bar Party. We had great food, friendship and FUN. The best volleyball competition that we have had yet. Not to mention the most attractive volleyball competition to date. Lot's of fun!!!! In fact I still have the sunburn to prove it. Charlie Schmucker's engineering marvel of a volleyball net for the Sand Bar was a huge success. Not only did he manufacturer the volleyball set up he even raised $$'s for the Wounded Warriors!!!! A huge mahalo to Charlie and Diane, and all who took the time for their efforts!!! Well we have one more great event left and that is our season ending Crab and Brisket Party. Because of the logistics and location we will be asking those who plan on attending to RSVP. The RSVP will be mandatory to attend the festivities. There will be more info forthcoming. We hope to see you all at the Crab n Brisket Party on November 12th. SAVE THE DATE Crab n Brisket Party November 12th 6:00Pm more info to follow Until then, Hanapa'a Captain Billfish Photos: Charlie Schmucker 13

15 INTERNATIONAL 14 FLEET Andy Bates I-14 Fleet sponsors Skiff Sailing Clinic Dec 9-11 A number of younger sailors have expressed interest in the I-14 fleet. As a result the fleet is hosting a winter clinic Dec There will be a boat building, repair and maintenance evening session at KYC starting at 5:30Pm with a hosted pizza dinner. I-14 Boat Builders Kim and Kris Henderson are flying out from Seattle to do the presentation. On Dec 10 an ashore and afloat tuning session starts at 10Am. And on Dec 11 select junior sailors can have rides on the boats. The fleet will then participate in the Bulkhead race at 2Pm. See attached flyer. I-14 Fleet Season Wrap-up The I-14 fleet had 16 scheduled races this year, and for a variety of reasons was only able to complete 11. We have a make-up day scheduled for Nov 20. The Fleet has two season series. Andy Bates and maddy Kennedy won the Spring series and Tom Pochereva and Yovo won the Summer series. The season points winner will be decided on Nov 20th. The fleet hosted the Pasha Hawaii PAC RIm race in 2016 with 22 I-14s participating in moderate breeze. We sadly paid tribute to Clarky who had run our race for the last 7 times. We will miss him. Doug Gordon made beautiful half model trophies and the young fire dancers were very entertaining at the banquet. Our new sponsor Pasha line was very supportive and the Eco flag once again flew during the races and was on display on the boats. 14

16 Annual KYC Christmas Tree Decorating Party Wednesday November 30, 6pm Kaneohe Yacht Club traditionally holds a Christmas tree decorating party in the bar on the Wednesday following Thanksgiving Day. Members come with a lovingly-created homemade ornament and a pupu. The ornament is tagged with their name and year before it is hung on the tree. Everyone helps to decorate the huge Norfolk Island pine tree that is sometimes donated by a member. It is fast approaching that time of year again! First on the agenda: WE NEED A TREE! Does anyone have, or know of someone who has, a 12 to 15-ft. Norfolk Island pine that they would like to donate (or get rid of) to KYC? Please contact Sue McBride, Lani Brandt or Laura Kelley. We must secure a tree no later than Sunday, November 27. WHAT: KYC Bar Christmas Tree Decorating Party WHEN: 1800 hours (6:00 p.m.), Wednesday, November 30, 2016 WHERE: Inside the KYC Bar HOW: Bring an ornament (preferably hand-made) and a pupu to share. All members are welcome! Sponsoring members should bring their new member friends and introduce them to this fun tradition. Wear something festive and prepare for holiday cheer! 15
