HOOK and Mac were both very challenging races with high winds and big seas testing crew and equipment. I know that in last month s newsletter I said that Wind is our friend. It s still true but maybe we could have done with a few less friends out there. I was sailing on a different horse than most for the Mac. The Volvo 70 was designed and built to race around the world in conditions very much like what we had. Safety is paramount as the boat speed can be well into the 20s and if someone goes overboard, you can be miles past the MOB before returning. Every time we head out for a distance race, we practice man overboard drills, sail changes and reefing the main. This year was all beating and for the first 12 hours, crew was kept on deck, hiking. One, it helps boat speed to keep all the weight on the rail; two, it was very uncomfortable down below. Boat speeds in the low teens and huge waves made it deafening down below. As the seas flattened out farther north, we were able to send crew down for a break. Halfway up the lake we tacked away from the Michigan shore searching for more wind, we crossed the lake and tacked short of the Wisconsin shore and headed north of the Manitou islands. One tack from there all the way to the finish, but many sail changes as the wind lightened. Early evening finish in flat water was a real treat along with some cold beer and fresh burgers. Wizard, a 74-footer from the west coast, finished 2 & 1/2 hours later and corrected over us by 15 minutes for class win. We settled for second place and fifth overall. Congratulations to all the crew that placed and finished the HOOK. It was quite an accomplishment. If anyone has any good stories to share, please write it up and we can share in the Reef Point. On a more somber note: We enjoy a vast sea outside our Club, but our sailing community is small. We are all brothers and sisters with our fellow sailors and that bond is thicker than blood. A boat from Chicago lost a crew overboard shortly after the start of the Mac race. Several boats along with Chicago police, fire and US Coast Guard searched for hours for Jon Santarelli. We all lost a friend that day. Jon was from Kenosha, racing on Imedi from Chicago. He went to adjust a line in the aft cockpit, boat jarred and he slipped over. He was wearing all the safety gear but the jacket never inflated. A few years ago, I was racing on Imedi and we had just set the boat up with the latest inflatable life jackets with all the safety gear, knife, light, leg straps, personal EPRB and tether. What we know is that the jacket did not inflate and due to that, the EPRB did not activate. We are still waiting to hear about how or why the jacket failed. We don t sail in these conditions very often and Labor Day Relaxation Racine, Wisconsin The Corporate Downsizing Quartet entertained on the patio. Photo courtesy of Sandi Fox I know some seasoned sailors (even me) don t take all the safety precautions that we should. I ll just run forward to grab that just running down to adjust the jib I m in the safest part of the boat- no worries we have all done this and we have to remember that it is just one slip away and you re overboard. Jon was a triathlete, and a very strong swimmer, but without a life jacket in these conditions, he was lost. Please take time to inspect your safety equipment, inflatable life jackets, and review your man overboard procedures. Talk to your crew, make sure they are trained for an event like this. US Sailing has Safety at Sea courses available online. It s good advice to take a look. Good to see members recycling aluminum, using refillable containers and thinking twice before using disposable cups. Thanks. This is your Club, and everyone needs to take care of it. A little help goes a long way. Our summer help is returning to school so it upon us to pick up. If you see an empty cup pick it up; empty glasses return to the bar; full garbage empty it or ask for help. We all can take pride in our place and make it welcoming to our new members. Good Sailing! 2 RYC News in Brief Meetings/Club Hours From the August Board meeting minutes: Treasurer Frank Randall reported: Our adjusted income for the month was down and for the year is down. It doesn t appear there was one reason why we were down this month. The month had many activities at the club. We returned about $2200 in work or pay and had some repair expenses for house facilities. All expenses are current. We may have seen the peak seasonal water level. All the Great Lakes except Superior dropped during the last month. Lake Michigan dropped an inch and is actually an inch below last year s level. Lake Michigan is expected to fall two inches in the next month From Commodore John Stanley: There were issues with Regatta food service and Stars racing. It is suggested to enlist a Regatta Chairperson to coordinate all aspects of this next year. Thanks to all who participated in the HOOK. The Andrea T. Nielson regatta went well for the youth. From Office Manager Kim Shortess: We need a new copier. There (was) a poker run from Reefpoint Marina on August 25 from 3-7 PM. From Vice Commodore Fritz Wichman: Absent due to traffic. No report. From Rear Commodore Amy Cermak: Absent, report as follows: Andrea T. Youth Regatta Sailed in memory of Andrea T. Nielson, Friday, August 3, youth total: 9 Opti, 9 (420) Clubs represented: Racine Yacht Club 12 youth, South Milwaukee Yacht Club 9 youth, Sheridan Shores Sailing School and Wilmette 6 youth Winners: Opti - Tied for 1st place: Dash Temple-RYC and George McShane- Sheridan Shores (8) Two firsts and two thirds. 2nd place: Jimmy McShane- Sheridan Shores (8) Four seconds 3rd place: Norah Paffrath (19) 420-1st place: Lexi Chigas-Skipper and George Barton-Sheridan Shores (4), 2nd place: Chase Temple-Skipper-RYC and Tatum Pasnic-South Milwaukee (11), 3rd place: Margarita Merlo and Sophie Merlow-Sheridan Shores (14) From Membership Secretary Sean Fox: Sean thanks Jim Seitz, Jim Metzger and Pam Jobson for all their help at the past two prospective membership meetings as he was unable to attend. They were able to sign a few new members up and continue to do a phenomenal job! For anyone that is interested in becoming a mentor to new members there will be a short meeting September 20th at 6pm, before the September general membership meeting. Watch your s as Sean will be reaching out to those who have volunteered to serve as mentors. Also watch the e-blast for reminders as we approach that date. Sean is considering a welcome party for new members. Member Roster: Active NEW Peter and Karen Stein Associate NEW David Drake Cookie and Garry Gorr Bruce and JoAnne Jensen Dayne and Katie Szymandera CHANGE Chris Lie - Active to Senior INACTIVE Carol Cooney - Associate to Inactive Resignation Gary and Mary Feest - Active to Resigned From House Director Patrick Sullivan: Things are going well in the house. The only thing to report on is the carpeting. We have had some observations that the carpet in the Clubhouse is bad! We will be researching different methods of cleaning and trying to find the best option for getting it to look presentable again. When the budget is better, it should be replaced! From Pier Director Frank Gall: The Hook race has concluded and things have returned to normal. I would like to thank Mark Lukow for his assistance in getting the race boats to their assigned slips. Currently work is continuing on piling extensions for the East Pier. We will need to raise the finger piers out of the water before winter. Volunteers for assistance on this project Visit RYC s Website at for the most up-to-date information, events and race results. Working on a plan for building steps that will be usable over time when the water level changes. Construction of the steps will be completed over the winter. From Yard Director Mike Freitag: We survived the Hook race and Racine regatta in fairly good shape. People need to clean up after themselves. And of course we had the normal runaway paddle boards and kayaks. Mike will place small stick on letters and will put RYC on each kayak and paddle board to identify them if they get away. Recycling: I am still finding a lot of aluminum cans in the garbage. We have one recycling can and we still have people using it as a trash can. I made copies of the original sign from Sue and Kim laminated them. I will purchase some inexpensive plastic and aluminum can recycling signs and prepare them for next year. Sue Beres just contacted Continued on page 3 2

3 News in Brief, cont d me and said the fellow to pick up the aluminum cans is scheduled for Fridays. Dry Sail Area: We gained another Star (member Stuart Doty). I completed the summer dry sail list, but I would like to review it with the board members to finalize. Frank Gall brought to my attention a discrepancy in dinghy storage prices between the dock storage area and the dry sail area. Lumber Adjacent to Ice Machine: The House Director had asked that we move the metal rack adjacent to the north pier fence and stack all the lumber back on it. I talked to one of our members and when the weather cools off, we ll start by cleaning the sand and garbage out of the area prior to moving the rack. Signage: The paddle craft rules sign has been received from Fast Signs. It has been placed adjacent to the stairs leading to the beach. Charlie delivered the RYC Members Only signs to replace the worn out ones at the north and south ends of the Club. I m also looking at getting a sign made for the east door (wording similar to that on the main entrance door). This is to try and keep non members from coming in to the bar (I ve witnessed three events of this). Chase Boats: Picked up plastic milk crates for racing mark anchors for Chaser 2. I was given a GPS receiver for use with the new multi-function gauge on Chaser 2. One of Evinrude s techs is going to come down and adjust the cable friction on Chaser 1 as I noticed a clunk when moving it slowly into gear. I m also going to create a folder with a reference collection of owner s manuals and instruction sheets for all the Evinrude outboards, controls and gauges. We still need to get the consignment engine on the Wahoo to put hours on it to show we are using it. Miscellaneous Yard: Replace or repair the steps to the beach adjacent to the swing set. Replace the line on the main walkway and beach stair handrails (may wait for 2019 on that one). From Race Director Fred Stritt: The Hook was pulled off, though the weather was terrible. The Hook Committee did a great job despite these adverse conditions! Wednesday races have been well attended, although the race staff has received a lot of criticism from members. RYC Regatta (Racing) went well, thanks to the on the water volunteers! Tony Kowalski will provide a chalk talk class to members of the Race Committee this winter. Matt Pederson will be coordinating with the RC regarding the Star fleet. From Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson: Labor Day Weekend plans are in the works for Hog n Dog. Entertainment is being arranged. Next: Blue Nose Regatta Saturday, Sept. 15th with Shrimp boil. From Staff Commodore Bob Sample: Along with the HOOK Race, the Racine Regatta is one of the Club s premier events. I have attended over 25 RYC Regattas and this is the first time no food was available for members, crew members and guests on an individual service basis. There is no reason for a reservation-based sit-down dinner at this regatta as the only food available. There is no way that crew members, friends and guests can be properly informed they need reservations. Cathy and I drove 3 hours to come to enjoy food and drink, only to find out that even members and guests that made reservations were unable to have anything to eat at the Club. What was wrong with the food plan we have followed for 25 years? In addition, why weren t the wrist bands intended for those with reservations passed out and checked for meal service, thus preventing individuals without reservations from eating food reserved for those who paid? In the future we need to do much better planning and execution. Committee Reports HOOK: A stormy success!. RYC Youth Foundation: Amy Cermak and her staff did an excellent job promoting and running the Andrea T. Youth Regatta, which included sailors from South Shore YC and Sheridan Shores. This recognition of Annie means a lot to Cathy and me as she was a member of our crew at the time of her accident. The Foundation is in the process of selling one of the donated boats which will provide funds for operational activities. It is suggested that foundation boats for sale be pictured/ listed on the bulletin board. COMMUNICATIONS There have been three requests for donations from RYC for fundraisers. A letter was received from the Village of North Bay thanking RYC for Evening on the Water. A letter from RYC member regarding issues with racing program was read and discussed. NEW BUSINESS It has been noted that instructors from the sailing school are going into and behind the bar. There is concern that many of them are under the age of 21. It was discussed that a small refrigerator in the classroom may help. This will be brought to Amy s attention. 3
