The Club is busy with sailing classes, racing, socializing and generally enjoying our Second home on the lake. With the HOOK and Mac races coming up, I thought I might share a story from last July. I have been sailing with the Duda family on their Santa Cruz 52 Sin Duda (trans: Without Doubt) for several years. A few years ago we headed out west to do some coastal races in California. Included was some long distances from LA to Cabo, Newport to Ensenada, and Newport to Puerto Vallarta. The latter was just over 1,000 miles. With the completion of this race and the fact that the crew stilled liked each other, we committed to the 2017 Trans Pac Race, from LA to Honolulu, 2,600 miles. We had a year and half to finish upgrades including new winches and pedestal, new rudder, longer pole, new deck hardware, water maker, bigger sails and final crew selection. All was finished, tested and ready when we returned July 3rd to Newport. On the 4th, we completed the final preparations: loading food, safety, sails, etc. by early afternoon. The crew could now relax and enjoy a cookout, boat parade and fireworks for our last night on shore. Up early on the 5th, and we headed up to the starting line off of Long Beach. Starting just north of the harbor we headed out, with our next waypoint, Hawaii. Well not really. Due to the Pacific High off the coast of California, we headed south for about 2 days in upwind and cold conditions. Slowly we got lifted westward and by the end of day 2 we had a reacher up. Off with the 3 layers of clothes and foulies, and into a downwind routine. For the next 8 days, we did not see a headsail, so they are bricked up and stacked on the weather rail. The race started under a full moon, making nights easier to work the boat. As the days passed, the moon rise came up later and later, making for some spectacular star gazing. Crew had settled in: sail, eat, sail, sleep repeat. The weather was warming up and the spinnaker has been changed several times. Routine rigging checks and line replacement is done every day. We had a spin sheet blow after 3 days of constant load on the new winch drums. In the middle of the Pacific, stars from horizon to horizon, sailing down waves at 20+ knots truly magical. We had plenty of wildlife visiting us day and night and unfortunately we are seeing a lot of garbage from fishing boats. Lost nets and buoys are the worst, as they can wrap around the keel. But we were constantly looking out for milk crates and buckets. One night, I saw white water breaking just under our bow and thought it was a container, but it was a sperm whale seeing what was up. After six days on starboard tack, we finally jibed. Very odd feeling after being on one tack for so long, muscles didn t seem to like it. All the drivers were suffering from soreness, but we recovered. As Racine, Wisconsin we got closer to the islands, the weather pattern changed a bit, evening clouds build and we have spectacular lighting storms. Just before dawn, rain pours and the wind in front of the cloud builds. The plan is to be in the right spot to take advantage of the wind boost without getting caught in the windless zone behind. Most mornings we did well, only once did we sit for a couple of hours with no wind. Once the sun comes up, the clouds warm and sky clears and whales seem to love it as they breach the surface in a type of dance another day in paradise. On day 10 we saw the shape of Molokai on the horizon. All crew were up for the final push thru to the finish between Molokai and Diamond Head on Oahu. The photo boat and helicopter swung by to document our arrival. The Duda family and Teri met us a couple of miles from the finish and followed us in as the sun is setting over Waikiki beach. Cheers and hugs all around as we passed the finish mark, and more importantly, cold beer is tossed over from our spectator boat. Never has a cold beer tasted better. We are escorted to our slip in the harbor, cheered by the members of Hawaii YC, greeted by our family and treated to cold pineapple rum drinks and real food. The crew enjoyed the party until late night, and the hotel bed that is not listing to port felt awfully comfortable. Close racing for our division of 14 Santa Cruz 50 and 52s. First was a couple of hours ahead, 2nd thru 6th, on corrected time, was only 40 minutes after 10 days and 2,600 miles. We ended our first Trans Pac in 5th, 15 minutes out of 2nd. That s yacht racing! We may be back, Hawaii is one very memorable finish. What are you going to do this July? I wish all our RYC family a save and enjoyable 4th of July John Stanley, Commodore SUMMER CLUB HOURS Open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 1PM Open Wednesday and Friday at 11AM; Saturday at 9AM; Sunday at 8AM Lunch available Wed/Fri/Sat 11AM - 2PM Bar Menu Available Tues, Thurs 5PM to 8PM; Weds til 10 Sunday breakfast 8AM - noon Bar Menu noon - 4PM Racine Yacht Club One Barker Street Racine, WI N W Phones: General (262) Office 7:00am Noon: (262) FAX (262) Web site: office@racineyachtclub.org View the Reef Point in color on our Website!

2 RYC News in Brief Meetings/Club Hours From the June Board meeting minutes: Treasurer Frank Randall reported: Our adjusted income was down for the month, but was still up for the year. There were no extraordinary expenses this month. We paid up front for spring merchandise, and Sandi had good sales for the month to offset this. As of the end of May, we still had a significant amount in savings, but with large pier repair bills, this will drop drastically. Kim had to move $20K from savings last week to cover current expenses. Try to keep spending down! The Lake Michigan water level went up three inches in the past month and is currently six inches above last year. The Corp expects it to only rise one inch in the next month. Lake Superior is four inches below last year and Lake Ontario is twenty two inches below last year. Maybe the trend is toward lower levels for us as well. From Commodore John Stanley: John suggests that we find a person to serve as fleet captain who would be responsible to ensure the maintenance of the race committee boats and those used in the youth program. This individual would not be responsible to do the actual work needed but oversee that problems are addressed. It was also suggested that Fred provides a training course of running the boats. Laminated check sheets should be provided to guide use of the boats. From Office Manager Kim : Kim requested review of the work or pay data sheets to ensure correctness. She is working on the RYC directory and hopes to have it completed in the next month. From Vice Commodore Fritz Wichman: Fritz reports that he and Sean Fox will be attending a marketing seminar in Brookfield. Fritz was advised to look up the marketing report written by Mark Lukow s son a few years ago. From Rear Commodore Amy Cermak: A safety boat/engine was needed for the youth classes which began on Monday, June 18. From Membership Secretary Sean Fox: We had a good month membership wise. Open house was busy and successful. It didn t hurt that we had perfect weather. I want to thank everyone that helped with open house - too many names to name, but everyone did a fantastic job. I heard from multiple people that day that everyone was welcoming, friendly and easy to talk to. I also want to thank Eddie and his staff for going above and beyond with the great food and hard work throughout the day. ASSOCIATE John and Lisa Caspers Joy and Greg Kaser Peter Kirch and Lisa Engelhardt Lori Manly-Hart John and Rose Nelson David and Sarah Pederson Caleb and Daniella Valdez CHANGE TO NRES Stephan and Tamara Hanig INACTIVE Jim and Conni Baldwin, Del Halvorsen RESIGNED John and Linda Mintier From House Director Patrick Sullivan: No report From Pier Director Frank Gall: The dock repair work is completed with the expected cost of $130,000. The leaking section of waterline was replaced. A part of the pier was found rotten and replaced. The east pier finger piers need to be raised. Carpentry help is needed to make transition pieces for the finger piers. Kim will put out an e-blast requesting help from members. From Yard Director Mike Freitag: Yard and Dock day was held on May 12. A hoard of volunteers showed despite the rainy weather and all of the yard work not requiring painting was taken care of. It was a good day. Waste Management: Luann at Waste Management contacted me and said their operations people reported that our trash container was consistently over filled. They offered to swap out our 6 yard container for an 8 yard one. They would waive the normal $300 Visit RYC s Website at for the most up-to-date information, events and race results. I approved that and the new container is in place. Speaking of trash, I have received several compliments regarding the aggregate concrete containers. One issue I noticed is that with the open sides, they do tend to collect rainwater and makes for heavy garbage bags. I m going to search for some new tops with spring loaded flaps. Recycling: We lost one of our Cans for Canines trash cans in one of the big blows. I let Sue Beres know about it and she offered to get a replacement. Richter Building Roof Leak: The roof sprang a leak in the northeast corner and was leaking into the Junior Sailing area. I got a quote from Carlson Roofing for $650 for repairs. Kevin at Carlson also said the whole roof was in sad shape and should be replaced sooner than later. He will quote on doing that. 2

3 News in Brief, cont d Drysail Area: Moved boats, trailers and wood around to make more room. Still have trailers taking up space on the dock. There s a Star boat with no home. We also have the prototype dinghy dock and the floating dock hoists next to the crane where the Star could go. Also, I d like to have the family sailing boat moved to an open slip (if there is one) and the floater moved to make more room for the drysailers. I suggest putting the three trailers in the parking lot east of the Richter Building and move the Junior outboard chase boats to their area on the drysail area. I plan on revisiting the homeless boats list and also create a list of summer storage boats to insure they paid their storage dues. I know all of them out here other than the Stars and a 470. A couple of other thoughts: Take the metal rack next to the dumpsters and move it over to the drysail area and store Optis on it. Make an area on the lawn near the beach to launch catamarans. The Club Hobie has been stored there before. Outdoor Lighting: Joe Fox has repaired the globe lights and all but one of the lights on the building soffits. Parts for that have been ordered. Front yard floodlights have also been repaired. Also, one light in the parking lot and one in the drysail area is out. Joe says he has a contact (ex member Bob Graves) that has a bucket truck. Joe will contact him. Landscaping: Mileagers has thatched and completed the first fertilizing of the yard. Maddie Lyons has been cutting the yard. Flowers have been planted. Another project is to eliminate the compost pile in the northwest corner of the building. Miscellaneous Yard: - The No Parking-Fire Lane signs have been replaced as the old ones are faded. Charlie Manning is making replacements for the blue Racine Yacht Club Members Only signs. To do : replace the rope on the walkway, beach stairs and parking lot posts; replace the steps to the beach adjacent to the swing set; add stop signs to the entrance fence to aid in protecting pedestrians and bicyclist in the walking path; build the kayak rack. From Race Director Fred Stritt: Absent; his report is below. Romey has the winter cover removed and was painted by Yoge and myself. Canvas was installed. Is appears the batteries need to be replaced and the windlass needs to be thoroughly examined. Romey is now docked on the N side of the main pier. We need to buy a dock box of some sort to store race equipment on the dock. I might have a bite on the Bayliner, we ll see! Fred brought up two issues to be considered by the board. From Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson: Tri-Club Rendezvous Music/Feast Fest: June 30th Harbor Lite Noon; R.Y.C. 2:30, 5th Street 5 pm. Get your tickets now!!! 50 tickets left! $20 in advance $25 at the door. The 4th of July Tunes by Kurt on the lawn. Starting around 3 pm. From Staff Commodore Bob Sample: Congratulations to Amy and Rick Cermak, their crew and their fine tuned boat, Diamond Girl, for winning 1st Place at the Chicago NOOD Regatta. They carry on the tradition of RYC having racers competing at the highest level with great success COMMITTEE REPORTS HOOK: 42 registered RYC Youth Sailing Program: Today is the first day of the US Sailing Level 1, Small Boat Instructor Course. 5 RYCYF NOTICE FOR REEF POINT & PUBLICATION The Racine Yacht Club Youth Foundation s 2018 Summer Sailing Instruction program is off to a great start. Classes have been expanded because of demand and every effort is being made to accommodate all applicants. Amy Cermak and her team of instructors are extremely gratified to have students from past classes returning to continue their sailing and racing instruction. This will be a very exciting summer for the program. The Foundation appreciates those who donated funds that were the basis for our purchasing new Opti and C420 boats thus enhancing our ability to expand our programs. Expansion, however, requires additional investment for us to provide a proper environment of safety and instructional integrity. This year s goal is the upgrading of our support boats. The Foundation was able to purchase 1 new 50HP motor for our Wahoo boat. We do not currently have a motor for our small Boston Whaler, which means there is no safety boat available for our classes. The program needs a boat for each instructor, plus at least one boat for emergency and safety factors. The preferred support boat for Jr. Sailing Programs is an Inflatable Rib, which is our next contemplated purchase. Additional boats will be added as funds are available. The Foundation continues to need donor funds to purchase equipment needed for our instructional program. Naming Rights would be available for donors that furnished funds to buy a support boat. Again, we thank all for your support, Bob Sample Amy Cermak President Vice President
