1 Mark your calendar: February 4-12 Valentine s Day Dinner/Dance February 16 Thoughts for Food March 2 St. Patrick s Day Party March 16 REEF POINT For the encouragement and promotion of yachting and the creation of a spirit of good fellowship (RYC Constitution, Article II) February 2013 Racine Yacht Club Racine, Wisconsin Commodore s Report Strictly Sail marks a nice halfway point between a season s end and the eternally hopeful Spring (where all cruising is reaching or downwind in flat water, and spinnaker douses aren t a cluster). We made a great showing at the booth and would like to personally thaånk Nick Ponsonby for his efforts at helping create a new booth look. We had a great turnout of volunteers that included Jack Pickup, Jim and Jane Stewart, Charlie and Joan Rice, Tina Dunn, Chuck Perkins, Mark Lukow, Blaze Arena, Cynthia Laboy, Larry Wilkins, Doug Wells, and Steve and Kris Gancarz. We would be remiss not to personally thank Judy Cook and Sue Beres for their efforts to work the crowd for early-bird HOOK Race entrants. Our booth staff was well versed and sold the benefits of the Racine Yacht Club and the programs that we run. I also had a nice time with the Scouts. We had nine Scouts at the show and I know they always look forward to looking at the boats and attending one mandatory seminar. Maybe not so much on the seminar, but they do like the mandatory Gino s East pizza. Transport to and from the train station is new and different every year. Checking the bus schedule (via the very modern text messaging!) allowed us to know the bus would be at our stop in 20 minutes. As soon as we were out of the cold, literally moments, we saw the bus race past the stop. I guess one of the corollaries of instant information is that it is, on occasion, instantly wrong. We might as well mention some other news in Scouting. It is anticipated that sexual orientation will no longer be a national policy matter, but, left to individual Chartering Partners. To that end, I believe it to be the correct direction for the Boy Scouts of America to match the vast majority of the World Organization of the Scouting Movement in adoption of a non-exclusionary membership policy. From the standpoint of Council fundraising, membership, and partnerships we will see big improvements. Relative to Ship 5750, this is a decision that s left to the Ship s Committee; however, I would anticipate that we would not act in an exclusionary manner. It is interesting to note that I did have the parents of a Scout withdraw his son based on this overt form of discrimination. This is as good a place as any to talk about the HOOK Race. We anticipate that we will have more boats than last year, and despite our best efforts to have deep water in the spring, it is unlikely that deep water will be available in Menomonee RYC Awards Banquet Carolyn Rand (top center) and the Endurance crew celebrate the 2012 season. Photo by Warren Nitz Marina. Our best information is that they will not be dredging until next fall. We all have our fingers crossed for the remote possibility that we could have one of those 39 days/nights of near Biblical proportion precipitation events. But hope doesn t let one tie up to cleat or a piling. We are prepared to dock the majority of the HOOK racers up the river. In discussions with our HOOK Chair, Scott Lewis, we will have a shipment of ply sheeting as fender boards and ladders to assist us in safely accommodating racers up the river along the sheet piling. We have started some conversations with the Kubers and other operators along the river. We will also be prepared to provide transport from the river to and from M & M Yacht Club. Don t worry, we ve got this. is the operative plan. Here s the past cast: We had about 150 people at the Awards Dinner. That s a record for the last decade. The food and service was superb. I am delighted that we were able to accommodate this number within the confines of the four walls. We were joined by a relatively large contingent of the Catamaran Racing Association of Wisconsin (CRAW). The CRAW crowd is lively and fun to have around. I think they exist as a distinct group of suspects (that s the step before prospect ) for membership. If you see somebody in a wetsuit in the hallway, be nice to them, ok? Money. I think we are doing fine. We have budgeted for a profitable year to the tune of about fifteen large. Our cash flow situation is in great shape thanks to some early slip payments and some 3 year contract deals. We have money that we could put in a CD but the current interest rate isn t sufficient to cover Continued on page 3 Racine Yacht Club One Barker Street Racine, WI N W Phones ミ General: (262) Office, 7:00am ミ Noon: (262) FAX (262) Web site: office@racineyachtclub.org View the Reef Point in color on our Web site!
2 RYC News in Brief Meetings/Club Hours From the January Board meeting minutes: Treasurer Frank Randall presented the December financial statement commending the Office Manager on good management of the Club s funds during this difficult period. The Club did not exercise its line of credit nor did it tap into savings in the CD. Dredging expenses to date are $154,928. Randall reported water levels continue to be a concern with December level one inch below the previous 1965 December low. It is expected to drop another inch within the month. VICE COMMODORE S REPORT No report. Manning commented that Vice Commodore Henning will be meeting with the Long Range Planning Committee shortly Office Manager Kim Shortess reported she has completed all required year end reports. She presented a request for a donation to a fundraiser from the Junior League. The Board recommended the Club donate a certificate to the Youth Sailing School. MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY S REPORT Shortess presented the Membership report in Secretary Ponsonby s absence: Plans for Strictly Sail were in progress. Ponsonby requested photos to display in the booth. STATUS CHANGES: New Members: Rob and Nicole Jossart, Active, In county Inactive to Resigned: Katherine Hermansen, Candace Herriot, Chick Veenstra All status changes were unanimously approved. Membership count is at 269. House Director James Rooney, Jr. led a discussion on plans for Club shutdown, February 4-12th. The Club will reopen for lunch on February 13th. Plans include thorough galley cleaning, painting the galley and beer cooler room, carpet and window cleaning in the dining room, repairs to tables and chairs. There will be plenty of work for volunteers at any time during the shutdown. Rooney led a discussion on promoting Club events, suggesting advertising more Visit RYC s Website at for the most up-to-date information, events and race results. aggressively events to which we can invite the public. Pier Director Mark Lukow submitted a written report: Executive Summary Ice eaters are running. Lake is low. Finger piers may be dropped. Slip contracts are out and due January 31, For the good of the Club: One of the biggest contributions you can make to the Club is to help promote and sell out the slip system. Ice Protection I am running ten ice eaters vs. our benchmark fifteen. I expanded last winter s experiment with lateral flow. With lateral flow we are keeping more surface area open with fewer units. So far this strategy has not been challenged with sub-zero temperatures. Three units have been taken out of service. Water Levels On Friday, January 4, a sand bar appeared in our North basin. The noon Milwaukee water level was ~2.1 feet below LWD. There was lots of exposed bottom under the pier and between the pier and crane. The 6 month forecast projects May water level of 2 over LWD and June water level of +5. That s about the same as our 2012 October and September water levels. Worst case projection for May is -4, best case projection is +9. We may be dropping some finger piers this winter. I will wait for thicker ice and feedback from slip holders before making the call. Dredging Post dredging survey is on the bulletin board. Depths are from LWD, so you need to add/subtract based on current water level. Currently you need to subtract ~1.2 feet. I put the Walker property fence back together before the ground froze. Professional finishing may be required. I ve seen some evidence of stacking and hauling of our tailings. Our liability there may be shrinking. Main remaining task is repairing damaged turf. Slip Contracts Slip contracts are out. The rate is $1300 and the deadline is January 31, Lukow comments that he had received 28 contracts to date (January 10). He commented on an incident with an electric cord on the docks, which led to a See this month s calendar on page 4 for additional coming events. Yard Director Jack Landwehr submitted a written report: The RYC bird abatement program will begin the end of February when new lines are strung to ward off seagulls and geese from the RYC lawn areas. With the success of this program last year, I suggest that we do not hire a company to control geese population along the basin. Again, I will encourage dog owners to walk their dogs along the basin shore line to discourage adult geese from nesting in the basin area. We are replacing the electrical box south of the pavilion. 3 Commodore s Report, cont d the gas money for the trip to the bank. We also had some of our members revert to payment by check as opposed to credit card. As I have previously mentioned, merchant swipe fees were about nine grand last year. (I m not going to mention that the law prohibiting the pass through of swipe fees changed last week.) Do what you can do, please. If we can watch the dimes, the dollars will watch themselves. On the docks, I am pleased to say that we are just about sold out. Deep water doesn t hurt, but neither does having the social capital that s present at the Club. Yard Director Mark Lukow indicates that ninety percent of our slips are now contracted. By the time you read this, if you have not renewed please contact Kim or Mark to avoid disappointment. I have a couple things for your calendar, cause they re on our calendar. The first is the shut down. For the new guys, the shut down is that span of time where we clean, fix, and rejuvenate the Club. I always thought it was as much fun as much work and there s a job for everybody. House Director Jim Rooney, Jr. has a signup sheet in the hall. It starts a few minutes after the Superbowl and reopens for lunch on February 13th. A couple days later, please come down for a wonderful meal and pleasing entertainment at the Valentine s party. Kurt Lasson promises that there s prime rib and lobster and lamb and some very nice entertainment. News in Brief, cont d On the 2nd of March, consider joining us for Thoughts for Food. If you have never been down for this event, wow, the Club is rockin. We have moved up the list over the years and now draw some pretty tight groups. This year we have Total Conformity, Flat Pocket, Mesnard Location, and Mean Jake. Last year the music was outstanding and we greatly expanded the beer selections. It costs 10 bucks for the night and it goes to a great cause. Bring a can of food. But don t take a can of food out of the barrel for the Soup on Sunday the following day. Consider bringing down soup to serve 8-10 people or a dish to pass. That s a low key event that allows ample time to recover from Thoughts for Food. See you there (at all the events!). Charlie Manning, Commodore a few weeks from removal of the existing electrical box and structure and installation of the new electrical box and enclosure. Once the electrical box is removed, we may have to use extension cords from the Clubhouse or a temporary hook up from the old electrical supply box to supply electricity to boat owners in the dry sail area and slip system. On the day of launch, due to the weight of the new electrical box, the crane will be used to position the new electrical box in place. The powering up of new electrical box and its enclosure should be completed within a two week period after launch. Some RYC members have already volunteered to work on the electrical box project. Other member wishing to volunteer to work on this project should contact the Yard Director. A planning meeting for this project is scheduled for Saturday, February 16th at 1100 hours. Snow and ice removal from the parking lot will continue as last year with the addition of salt spread in the parking lot area as needed. Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson reported a light turn-out but a great time for the revelers on New Year s Eve. He is working on the menu for the Valentine s Dinner, February 16th. Lasson led a discussion regarding the fund raiser for the Pink Paddlers on April 13th. He and Rooney will coordinate. Race Director Bob Sample reported 100 reservations received at meeting for the Awards Banquet. He announced that the 2013 Race Schedule has been published. He is in discussions with Area 3 race management regarding a joint event. Sample will have copies of the 2013 Racing Rules booklet available for sale at the Club. He thanked members who worked on the HOOK document preparation. All forms are now posted on the website. REPORTS OF COMMITTEES Adult Sail: Cook reported registration is open, with entries already received. Youth Sail: Stanley and Shortess planned to have the schedule posted in time for Strictly Sail. HOOK: There will not be a cruising division in the race this year. NEW BUSINESS Randall led a line-by-line discussion of the 2013 budget. Adjustments were made as required. After discussion, Stanley moved to approve the budget, seconded by Landwehr. The motion passed unanimously. The budget will be presented to the membership at the February General Meeting. GOOD OF THE CLUB Jack Landwehr Jr. is now an adult leader with the Sea Scout Ship. He joined the ship when we was 12 years old (officially 14).
