1 Mark your calendar: Al Henning and Great Lakes Laser Championship Regatta August Blue Star Championship August REEF POINT For the encouragement and promotion of yachting and the creation of a spirit of good fellowship (RYC Constitution, Article II) August 2012 Racine Yacht Club Racine, Wisconsin Commodore s Report Why I m a member and why I sail... A couple of things happened this last month that made a real impression on me. Both are related to the HOOK Race, one being more personal and the other a more public observation. First, the public part. Simply put, it was very inspiring to see the level of involvement and dedication of so many members in making this a successful event. Despite our best efforts to place a few volunteers in the trick bag, we had another increase in racers this year. The trick bag was changing the NOR to more carefully reflect the equipment requirements for Category 3 Offshore rules. We have always had that spec, but we more carefully outlined some of those items in the NOR. It cost us some racers, (in light of a number of sailing incidents during the last year) but we had an obligation to review our requirements. I guess the point is that we were able to manage those changes and run a heck of a race. It s hard for me to describe the pride I have in HOOK volunteers and the Racine Yacht Club. I raced in the HOOK in the Doublehanded division with Bill Haliday. (Bill Erdmann was my double on the Queen s, but wouldn t do the HOOK because he can t stand more than 12 hours of NPR podcasts.) For those of you unfamiliar with the race, we turn left at Death s Door for the sail down into lower Green Bay. This year, it was close hauled after the left turn at Chamber s Island. A million stars of the Milky Way and the western shore provided a back drop to the night. The wind was 20 over the deck but the chop seemed to make the boat glide. Sailing in that immediate blackness, the water dead ahead was without definition and featureless. There were no reference points other than the lights on the shore a dozen miles away and the feel of the boat, absolutely alive and graceful. Nick Hayes writes about sailing through the moorings at South Shore on a dark night in his book, Saving Sailing. He captures that enchanting moment when sailing is reduced to just pitch darkness and the sense of the wind and the pressure of the helm. His description is flawless and included in the chapter entitled Why we sail. This week I m on the Sea Scout Long Cruise. The itinerary is simple. Go north and miss the rocks and the thunderstorms. HOOK Race 2012 Fred Stritt and the Hasten crew celebrate their 3rd in section/4th overall in the HOOK. See full results at racineyachtclub.org. Photo courtesy of Danielle Dickert We are a fleet of four boats, thirteen Scouts and four adults. We have had some great sailing days but have battled a balky Atomic. Some ignition parts and finally draining a quart of water out of the tank seems to have done the trick. Yesterday we were headed south to Sheboygan but a 20 knot breeze turned us back at the half way point. We lost a starter in the old Columbia, Courteous, and we towed her in from the inner harbor to Alpha dock in Manti (Manitowoc). An observer commented that the Scouts should be able to dock that boat under sail... downwind in 20 knots with only two jibes and a couple million dollars of targets (including Twister). I offered a concise retort to his ill-conceived suggestion. So, at this very moment we will go to the Maritime Museum while some weather passes by. Tonight, a night sail down to PW. Double handing is perfect if you like boats and sailing but aren t crazy about people. The Sea Scout long cruise is just the opposite. Regatta is coming up and we are looking forward to a weeklong racing program. The Star boats and Lasers are running regionals with the Catamaran Racing Association of Wisconsin joining in on the fun. I like the camping/tent thing in the front lawn. I think it adds vitality to the Yacht Club. I m headed to the Maritime Museum, and, with some luck, will return one hundred percent of the Scouts to their parents in a couple days. 2 RYC News in Brief Meetings/Club Hours From the July Board meeting minutes: Treasurer Frank Randall presented the June financial statement with the comment that the Club lost a little money this month. However, the YTD statement shows the Club ahead by $14,000. No major expenses were incurred in June. Great Lakes water levels continue to fall. Current Lake Michigan reports show water at DATUM. COMMODORE S REPORT: No report. Vice Commodore Gregg Henning led a discussion on repairing the silt fence, comparing various materials and techniques. Henning announced he is working to get a NOAA weather station with WebCAM install at the Club. Rear Commodore John Stanley reported youth sailing classes are going well. Manning indicated he has received compliments of wonderful experience due to our fine instructors. MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY S REPORT: New Member: Nicolet DeRose, Associate Status Change: Herb & Judy Kelstrom, Active to Senior All status changes were approved unanimously. Membership count is 264. House Director Jared Shortess reported the caterer/galley has passed the recent Health Department inspection. There were several minor issues which were promptly addressed. Shortess reported on the incident of under-age drinking at a private party at the Club. RYC does not tolerate underage drinking on the premises, addressed the issue at the event and sent a letter to the Club member who sponsored it. Pier Director Mark Lukow provided a written report: We ve applied for a permit to apply herbicide to our north harbor area to Visit RYC s Website at for the most up-to-date information, events and race results. control Eurasian water milfoil (an especially undesirable invasive species.) I ve had grounding reports from two east pier boats (with drafts of 5.5 and 6.3 feet). I question if it is wise to play roulette with water levels. Your Commodore and Pier Director refurbished six electric pedestals with help from Ryan and Abby. All sixty slips will soon have up to code 30 amp service (or better.) Transient fees are the same as last year, but we are now offering 7 nights for the price of 5. (Did you know members get reduced rates? Just $15/night vs $25-35/night for non-members.) I piggybacked on Pam Jobson s idea and bolted two plastic Adirondack chairs to the end of the main pier. It s a nice têteà-tête space. I recently enjoyed a game of backgammon and an adult beverage on the picnic table on the east dock. The dice were kind, the beer cold, and the breeze pleasant. Check out the amenities on the east side of the pier! Commodore Manning announced that the Club has received a donation of a used electrical panel which should serve perfectly for the pier system upgrades. Yard Director Jack Landwehr provided a written report: We are continuing to water the lawn once a week for 4 or so hours per area. We are also providing water for the new plants that the Harbor Commission put in by the hand dock and dingy storage rack south of the Sea Scout Storage area. Garbage is emptied daily. We had a few issues with raccoons.. I wonder if raccoons are afraid of fish line...? It works on birds! We have washed out the sand from a few bushes; a few more to go. I will wait until the weather cools down before I ask for yard volunteers to work on the bushes. I have the name of the boat owner from IL that has his boat in the yard. We don t know which RYC member now owns the boat. I ll work on this during the week. I See this month s calendar on page 4 for additional coming events. No issues. Due to the warm weather the crowd was smaller than past years. We are ordering a port-a-potty to be on-site for the HOOK Race and following weeks. We had two for the 4th that seem to work well. We had hand wipes by each door for sanitation. 3 News in Brief, cont d Entertainment Update A section of the chain link fence needs to be repaired. Long term plan: We need to determine a schedule for coating the parking lot and dry sail area. Mid- to late September seems to be a good time when 4 days can be used to complete the blacktop and mark the lines on the lot. Any suggestions? After discussion, the Board recommends the work be done between Yard & Dock Day and Haul-Out. Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson reported all plans for Regatta in August and the Shrimp Boil in September are underway. Lasson reminded Board members of the Tri-Club event scheduled for the coming weekend. Race Director Bob Sample provided a written report: The RYC 2012 Race Week is August This will be a very busy 10 days. My goal of establishing the Al Henning Regatta as the beginning of a week long event is coming to fruition. The schedule for the week s activities are: August 10 Laser and CATs start arriving with registration August Laser Great Lakes Championship Regatta (25-30 boats) and the Al Henning Regatta PHRF, STAR, BUCs, CATs (30-35 boats)2 racing circles, north and south August 16 STARs start arriving August BLUE STAR Championship Regatta (20-30 boats) These events require manpower and boats. With the exception of the Al Henning north course races, which only need a committee boat and race committee, the other events need a committee boat, mark-set boat and at least two chase boats for safety. We need help for the three regattas mentioned here, especially chase boats and operators. The committee boats are covered with Romey and Race 2. We have Racer Chaser, which can be one mark-set boat. We need an additional mark-set boat for the Cat circle. This is going to be a very busy week. On Wednesday night, July 11, the Park Board approved our use of the north and south parking lots for our use for the regattas for storage and camping. One request from the Board was that they be included for Officers Night on the Water. The Board recommended the request for boats and operators be included in the blasts. 5 My Experience in Sailing Camp By Zoie Rae Weiss Day one July 9th Today was my first day at Sailing Camp. I have been sailing my whole life with my Pepa, (Ron Weiss) and have recently been in three of the regular sailing sessions RYC provides sailors. Today we went straight to sailing. The wind was perfect for the first day of Sailing Camp. There were seven people in the camp, so five people got to use the Optis, and the oldest boy and girl (fifteen and seventeen) used one of the 420s. We were planning to go out to practice tacking and sailing downwind. I am pretty good at doing that from past years experience, although practice wouldn t hurt. Once we were comfortable doing this, we headed out towards the green buoy. A lot of people got stuck at the mouth of the harbor, but Spencer and Nicole were always there to help us. I feel safe when I sail, knowing that they will always be there if I need help. Once we got out onto the big lake, the waves started rocking our boats back and forth. Off in the distance I saw the two people in the 420 start to tip and realized that they capsized! I don t think they work so well together. During the whole sail, they capsized three times. Although it was a fun sail, I got soaked! At least we could go inside, eat lunch, and dry off. The lunch that RYC provided us was either a turkey sandwich or a ham sandwich. They also packed us some Starbursts! Yummy! My new friend and I started to make towers with the Starbursts. After that we headed out to sail again. For the rest of the day we were practicing tacking and going downwind. While we were sailing on the river near the Main Street Bridge I saw my Grandpa sailing his boat Z-Rae! I can t wait for tomorrow to come. Day two, July 10th Today, Spencer and Nicole told us that we were doing a scavenger hunt! We got a list of stuff we needed to find and we were off searching. All of the materials that were on land were around the Yacht Club. I found my sail and daggerboard. The only thing I didn t have was my sprit and rudder. The sprit was the hardest to find. They hid it in the corner of a fence! It was really hard, because the sprit blended in with the color of the fence. The rudder was located in the water tied to a buoy! My friend and I didn t want to go in the water so we asked the boys to get it for us. Once I found all of the sailboat parts, I rigged the boat and headed out to find the objects in the water. Once I found numbers one through six and the Sweetish Fish, (the objects we needed to find were in the water) Nicole secretly handed me a water balloon. I threw it at one of the kids in the class. After we went inside to eat, we took a bumpy ride over to the beach. It was really hard because when you got close enough to shore, you had to take out your dagger board and rudder so you wouldn t get stuck in the sand. Some of the kids and I played games in the water like trying to jump over the waves and Marco Polo. When we done at the beach, we got the pieces of our sailboat back in and headed back to the harbor. Day three, July 11th When we came into class today, Spencer and Nicole handed us each a bag filled with big red straws and lots of tape. We were making can-amarans. Can-amarans are mini catamarans made out of cans. It took us a while to build and make adjustments, but we were all satisfied with our boats when we finished. We let them sail off one of the piers. Then we could catch them on the other pier that they were floating to. They were really fun to build and watch. At the end of the race, I got 3rd place. We also sailed bigger boats. The boys got to sail in the Cal 20 and the girls got to sail in the Hunter 22. We sailed around the lake for awhile. When the two sailboats got close to each other, Spencer jumped on to our boat! I guess he needed a break from the four boys. When it was time for lunch, Spencer jumped back on the Cal 20 and headed back to the harbor. Everyone got into the chase boat and headed to the restaurant called Spinnakers. We had very good pizza there. After that we sailed all the way to the lighthouse and back. The whole time we were on the boat, I had my shoe in my hand because of how many spiders were on the boat. At least it was a fun sail. Day four, July 12th Today everyone (besides Spencer, who was going to be in the chase boat) was going to be sailing in the Hunter 22. We sailed all the way to the lagoon. Once we got there we went swimming. The water was freezing!! I got out, but all of the boys stayed in the water playing football and Frisbee. When everyone was done swimming we had lunch, and sailed all the way to the Sugar Shack to get ice cream! I got Moosetracks. When we were done, we headed back to the harbor. It took a long time to sail to the lagoon and back, but it was fun. Day five, July 13th Today we were playing the watermelon game. The object of the game (while sailing) is you have to try to pick up a watermelon that is floating in the water. The hard part is that they greased up the watermelon so it was hard to pick it up! Two other people and I were in a 420 and the other three boys were in the other 420. When we started sailing it was a race to the first watermelon. The boys got it first. Nicole threw in another watermelon! We got it before the boys. We kept playing the game until it was time for lunch. Since it was the last day of Sailing Camp, we had a cookout! Spencer cooked us all hamburgers. One of the boys brought a steak for Spencer to cook for him. We then got to eat the watermelons that we were playing with earlier. It was all very good. After we ate, we sailed all the way to the beach to go swimming. Spencer and Nicole anchored the chase boat, and we had to sail to them. It is way hard, because we had to tack to get to them. The first time we tried we got stuck in the wind. We tried again and finally got to them. We started swimming while the boys tried to get to the chase boat. We were waiting for a very long time. When we finally got impatient, Spencer dropped Nichole off in the boy s boat so she could help them. I don t think it was a good idea to let three boys go in one boat alone. While we were swimming the sky started to get cloudy. We could also see that it was raining in the distance. We hopped into our boats and headed back to towards the harbor. While we were sailing the wind died so Spencer towed us with the chase boat. Right when we got the boats out of the water, it started to rain. Overall, today was one of my favorite days. I am glad that my Grandma and Grandpa sign me up every year to go sailing. I always have fun and enjoy all of the fun activities that Spencer and Nicole plan for us. I also enjoy using the different boats. I had a great time this year and am excited for next year to come. 5

6 RYC Cruise to Milwaukee By Susan Cain On Friday, June 22nd, eight boats cruised to SSYC in Milwaukee. The following people gathered for a pot luck dinner. Dick and Barb Salisbury, John and Joan Balthazor, John and Barbara Nowak, Iras Sramek, Steve Tennis and Bonnie Smith, Bob and Carol Beilfuss, Ernie and Judith Simon, Bob and Carol Kunath, and Rich and Susan Cain. The weather was cool and breezy, so the pot luck moved from the patio to Logical Order. Everyone enjoyed the many delicious foods. On Saturday morning, Dick and Barb Salisbury departed for their summer cruise, Bob and Carol Kunath participated in activities from another group, and the remainder of the group was joined by Ray and Nancy Olson. Saturday s activities included an enjoyable and informative tour of the Harley Davidson Museum and a very entertaining tour of the Lakefront Brewery (which is not located on the lake!). All participants received four tokens to be used for beer both before and after the tour. Sam, the tour guide at the brewery, had many questions for the participants. Correct answers were rewarded with a token for a free beer. Ernie Aloysius Simon received a token for living the farthest distance from the brewery (Africa, actually Illinois, but the guide didn t know!). Joan and John Pistol Pete Balthazor were called upon to help demonstrate how the yeast must eat to brew the beer (see picture). 7 th Annual Port Washington Rendezvous Saturday, September 1 st, 2012 Port Washington, WI SHEBOYGAN PORT WASHINGTON MILWAUKEE SOUTH SHORE RACINE Promoting PHRF CLUB RACING 3 Open to PHRF Racers, Club Racers, NEW Racers, and Visiting Yachts 3 PHRF Sections and Jib & Main Sign up now!
