Opening day was absolutely lovely in all respects. From the standpoint of those of us on the dais, it s a tough assignment. The notion of spring and a renewed outlook is a challenge to balance with the solemn recognition of departed members. I think that the best solution to this is to charge the membership with the task of maintaining the legacies of those who have passed. Maybe you have a different strategy to deal with our losses. To the specifics of the day: The Star Spangled Banner was a delightful addition to the ceremony as sung by Kaisa Herrmann, simply and perfectly performed in a cappella style. The Sea Scouts got off easy as we could not find the Wisconsin or Racine flags at the bottom of the box in which they are ALWAYS stored. It was a very nice invocation by Homer Kohn, a retired U.S. Army Chaplain. And, it s always our pleasure to hear the Racine Choir (Diane and Ken Luedtke and Lynn and Jack Landwehr) sing Amazing Grace with the pipes. A special thank you to Fred Stritt for his cannon shot at the end of Amazing Grace. A cannon shot is nothing extraordinary in itself, but the timing was impeccable. Later that day we added the Open House to our opening day festivities. I will start and finish with the single word, success. Shortly after the Opening Day ceremony we had the informal fashion show. Sandi Fox did an absolutely professional job in her selections. Further, she makes a statistically significant contribution to the bottom line. I met some visiting members from other yacht clubs burdened with bags of RYC apparel. That s interesting in itself and says more than faint praise for her skillful taste. Mary Joe Rode demonstrated scarf tying techniques with the aid of a video loop projected in the dining room. I did not know that was a science; but if you see me with a scarf, please understand that I am new at it. Open House Part 1: Special thanks to the Committee for the Promotion of the Racine Yacht Club Through the Methods of Open Housing. We had a great open house. Thanks to Nick Ponsonby for organizing the day. Sandy Mott did a beautiful job organizing the printed materials with the creative genius of Paul Tobias for classy final product. (Here it comes.) Had I taken the time to read the program proofs more carefully specifically the part about Saturday, May 31, 2014 I would not have shown up in blazer and tie and white pants Commodore Manning proudly thanks Kaisa Herrmann for her beautiful rendition of The Star Spangled Banner on Opening Day. Photo courtesy of Amy Cermak on Saturday, May 24th ready to go. We can now put that to rest, OK? Open House Part 2: On that CPRYCTMOH crew we had Tim and Patty Strandell, Marsha Connet, Kurt Lasson, Steve Paulson, Pam Jobson and Cynthia Laboy. I purposely left out Kim Shortess because she is on every committee, sometimes as chair. Gosh, the weather was beautiful and the music was great and the food was awesome and the company was delightful. Trudy Strand took the helm with the children s activities so their parents could have some peace. It was superbly planned and executed. A big part of the success for the open house was the auctions. Special thanks to Reefpoint Marina, Racine Riverside and West Marine for their generosity. Thanks to all who helped out. Open House, Final Act: Six new members, a couple of new slip holders. No bar fights. Peace on Earth. It was a long day. When you re a Jet: We had some ice damage this year, mostly as a result of the ice jacking the pilings out of the earth. To make a short story somewhat longer, we have rediscovered the ancient art of jetting in pilings. I bought a thing called a trash pump. Not that it is used to pump trash, but it s a pump that does survive if it swallows a little trash. The process is simple. Assemble about thirty feet of 1-1/2 PVC pipe and send it down to through the top of the piling. At 150 gallons a minute, the bottom is eroded out of the base and the piling descends towards the center of the planet. Works a charm! Saves money. The first Jet Award goes to our pier director, Mark Lukow and our blue nose wrench operator, Frank Gall. 2 RYC News in Brief Meetings/Club Hours From the May Board meeting minutes: Treasurer Frank Randall presented the April financial report with the comment that the Club is over budget. This is because the $10,000 payment to move the dredging spoils was paid, as well as the $2,000 payment due on the race boat exchange contract. Randall reported the good news that water levels are still up and continuing to rise. They are now above chart datum. Office Manager Kim Shortess reported that Club tax reports have been prepared and will be filed on time after signature. Shortess presented two requests for donations for non-profit events. These will be filled with a youth sailing certification and an offers for a two hour sail from the Landwehrs. Rear Commodore John Stanley reported he was still seeking youth program instructors. (Positions have now been filled.) Membership Secretary Nick Ponsonby presented the following requests: NEW MEMBERS: Active: Michael and Jackie Krueger, out of county Associate:Jon and Tiffany Behrends, in county; Herman and Susan Morgan, in county STATUS CHANGES: Active to Senior: Jim and Gretchen Romanshek Active to Social: Bob and Karen Sturtevant Active to Inactive: Kathy Treacy and Roger Lieski; Dave and Else Milaeger Social to Inactive: Louis Finch Active to Resigned: J. Kim and Maureen Gillen; Gordon Owens Senior to Resigned: John and Pat Heinrichs; Greg and Theresa Zamites After discussion, all status changes were approved. Membership stands at 264 members. His committee has met and is working on recommendations for new membership classifications to attract more members. Discussion followed. House Director Jim Rooney reported on his recent meeting with the caterer. Topics Visit RYC s Website at for the most up-to-date information, events and race results. included new menu, promotions and specials, galley reorganization, convection oven, comment cards. He requested that members who wish to comment on the caterer/galley services address their written comments to him, rather than directly to the caterer. He also requests members to refrain from entering the galley during service hours as this poses a distraction to the staff as well as a potential injury to the member. He requests comments be channeled through the server. Rooney led a discussion on finding a contractor to open the spit in the north basin now that we have permission to do so (This work has now been completed). Manning also reminded the board that our current dredging contract continues for only two more years, so the future board will need to extend it well before expiration. Pier Director Mark Lukow reported east pier damage was repaired on Yard and Dock Day as well as the completion of other pier projects. The water backflow control has been repaired. The water system to the docks is now on. At the time of the Board Meeting, Lukow had three slips available for the upcoming season. He is working with Brad Strand on a pilot project to put small boat shore stations and a PWC floater in the north basin. Discussion followed. Yard Director Jack Landwehr presented a written report: Launch went well. A bit windy in the afternoon, but all went well with the exception of one mechanical issue that was resolved with 200 feet of anchor line stretch across the water from the boat slip to the floating dock. Thanks to Power Grip Jim Sittig; Jim did not let a 30 mile an hour puff pull the line out of his hand while he was rafting a boat from a west slip to the floating dock. John Stanley and Jack Landwehr organized 2014 Launch. We thank the boat owners for braving the cold spring and getting their boats ready for launch. We thank Mark Rode for ordering the crane, Greg Schneberger for overseeing the lifts, See this month s calendar on page 4 for additional coming events. GALLEY HOURS WED and FRI Lunch... FRIDAY Dinner...5:00-9:00 SATURDAY Lunch... SUNDAY...8:00-2:00 OFFICE HOURS 8 AM until 2 PM M-F and Jim Sittig for ordering the mast dollies. We also thank Charlie Manning and all the adult leaders and Sea Scouts that helped at Launch A special thanks for all the non-boat owning RYC Members who volunteer their time for work or pay hours to help with the launch. The additional volunteers improve safety and efficiency. Doughnuts, kringle and coffee started a great launch! There was quite a bit of erosion by the canoe rack. I plan to lay down barrier and hold it in place with rocks now located in the east parking area; and fill the void with sand from the parking lot. The rocks will keep the waves off the shore line and the liner will allow water to flow without letting the sand sift through. Continued on page 3 Off Watch Joan Tobias is recovering from a broken hip. RYC extends wishes to Joan for a full and speedy recovery. 2

3 News in Brief, cont d Commodore s Report, cont d Asphalt sealing will take place in the next two weeks if the weather cooperates. This will be a RYC DYI project. Any member who can push a broom or pull a squeegee can help. Wear any clothing you plan to throw away. I have devised a method to apply asphalt sealing that takes the mess out of sealing...show up and see how it works. Please call Yard Director Landwehr at (262) to volunteer. It will be fun and RYC will buy beer after the work is done. The parking lot will be done in two phases; with a few days for curing between the phases and after the second phase. Members, guests and vendors will have access to the RYC Club House during the sealing period. The large trash and recyclable containers are located in the Dry Sail Area and will stay there until the sealing project is completed. This job won t get done on time if only a few volunteer do the work; so please volunteer. The timing of the sealing project is controlled strictly by weather. Supplies will be ordered in a few days and we will just to wait for the weather to warm up and schedule sealing when there is a stretch of a few days without rain. The east lawn has been rolled with a two ton roller. This will allow for lawn games to have a true some-what flat surface for balls to roll and will make it easier to mow the grass. Croquet anyone? Lawn darts? For convenience, ashtrays will be located on tables in the patio area. The patio area is a designated smoking area, as is most of the outside RYC Grounds. The ramp with the blue carpeting to the Club house is not a designated smoking area. Please refrain and ask others to refrain from smoking on the ramp to the Club house. Any questions on smoking restrictions, please see the Yard Director. In addition, Landwehr reports he and Stanley are reviewing the checklist for launch for future use. He has lined up the summer yard help. Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson announced the sequence for the Tri Club party on July 26th: RYC... noon 5th Street... 2:30pm Harbor Light... 5:00 pm UNFINISHED BUSINESS 100th ANNIVERSARY: Manning s committee has a draft plan based on the historical archives prepared by the Hennings. It will be a twelve-month campaign, beginning in April 2015 and ending in April 2016 with a final party celebration. COMMUNICATIONS Cook read a letter from Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection regarding bottom painting licensing. It was determined this does not apply to the Club as we do not offer to paint bottoms as a business. A letter from West Marine regarding a recall of Raymarine equipment will be posted on the bulletin board. NEW BUSINESS Ed Bergles has volunteered to take on the Family Sailing program and will be maintaining the boats as well as certifying members to operate the boats. From the Hearth: We have had several meetings with our caterer, Roberta, during the last few weeks. Look forward to a new menu that features an honest to gosh Wisconsin Fish Fry for Friday night dinner service. Further, the addition of a convection oven to our galley has drastically increased our service options and matched the techniques used at Roberta s Out of the Pan restaurant. It was a long time coming and I look forward to the additional offerings. Firsts: The first Wednesday night race of the season was not cancelled. Nobody can remember the last time the first race of the season got past an abandonment due to God s meteorological wrath. It was however, foggy but all the racers made it back by Thursday. I want to make a special point to thank Ed Bergles for his owning the Family Sailing program. He has both the Hunter and the Cal in Bristol condition. Upcoming adventures: Every Thursday night Kurt Lasson organizes a jam session at the Yacht Club, you should come down and listen to the music, have some wings and enjoy yourself. See ya out there. Charlie Manning, Commodore PS: On July 4th, Barker Street will be closed to all traffic after 6pm. You will need a RYC membership card or Fourth Fest parking permit all day to enter the Yacht Club grounds. Wisconsin Badgers vs. Illinois Fighting Illini - October 11 We are invited to attend the Wisconsin Badger game this year. The cost for tickets are $100 per person includes bus to and from, food, beer, wine and much more, I will have a raffle and strip cards to boot. There will be 48 tickets available.
