1 Mark your calendar: Too many August events to mention here see calendar on page 4 for details! REEF POINT For the encouragement and promotion of yachting and the creation of a spirit of good fellowship (RYC Constitution, Article II) August 2013 Racine Yacht Club Racine, Wisconsin Commodore s Report It was a busy month. While some of us were on the Queen s Cup, the Club hosted the Tri-Club party and we were joined by one hundred other visiting yachtsmen from our neighbors to the south, the Chicago Yacht Club. Word around the campfire was that nearly two-hundred-fifty people were at the Club enjoying the music, the food, and the perfect weather. Some of the more experienced members were reminded of the old LMYA Open Houses of the 70 s. I would have liked to have attended but opted for 17:16:17 hours of cold and wet close-hauled sailing with my good friend, Wild Bill Erdmann (and a flag!). Rather true to form, Kurt ran a great gig. Again. HOOK Race 2013 The HOOK Race started and continued with light breezes. Photo courtesy of Bob Kunath And then two weeks later, the HOOK Race! Let us start by saying that our new Chair for this event, Scott Lewis, organized a perfectly run race. I am certain that he would tell you that his volunteers were motivated, experienced and took ownership of their individual responsibilities. Our committee s hospitality and friendliness was overwhelming and inspiring. Once again, the Friday night party went perfectly and registration was smoothly executed. Special thanks to our sponsor, Larsen s Bakery for the kringle and custom designed HOOK COOKie. Nice touch. The fifteen percent reduction in participants was vexing. Sure, the Queen s was down and some attributed that to a longer distance. Was it the threat of low water? Less interest in racing? I sure can t put a finger on it. As for the HOOK Race proper, most I can say is that the M & M Yacht Club is a great partner, and a great destination. For some of the racers (the author included) light air and flies were the preponderant theme. Arriving at the top of the Bay at dawn was like entering a vacuum under a sun lamp. The other half enjoyed some steady breeze that got them to M&MYC by mid morning. That s racing. As it turns out, even if you arrived by motor, you could still enjoy a Black Beard Rum punch or a Death s Door vodka cocktail. This week I depart for the Sea Scout Long Cruise. I think it is the fourteenth. One of the (First World) problems that we are facing in the foundation is a little too much money. It is not the defined mission of the organization to accumulate reserves. I have asked our Sea Scout Board of Directors to determine how we can effectively use this for the good of the youth members. I would also be interested in hearing ideas from our RYC members. In my own mind, it s a significant challenge that requires some serious thought. Spending money is easy; spending money wisely is a whole other matter. I gotta go. The Sea Scout equipment is running but I have to get my boat ready. I am tired of starting it with a set of pliers resulting in a shower of sparks. PS: Say a Novena for the America s Cup. Who would have thought that boats going 40 knots would be so boring. Maybe it will pick up when we get out of the Vuitton stuff and into the actual race. 2 RYC News in Brief Meetings/Club Hours From the July Board meeting minutes: Treasurer Frank Randall gave a preliminary report as the June books have not been closed. The office was extremely busy with the HOOK preparations. HVAC replacement is much less expensive than anticipated. The Club should also see some decrease in operating expense. Water levels are up at least an inch over last year s level. Office Manager Kim Shortess announced new directories are done. They will be prepped for delivery the week after the HOOK. Membership Secretary s Report: NEW MEMBERS Active: Clifford Opatken and Emily Stoddard Associate: David and Claire Holland Social: Brian and Carol Duffy Status Changes: None All new member applications were approved unanimously. House Director Jim Rooney reported the new HVAC unit is in place and running as expected. Defective windows in the bar/ dining room have been replaced. Minor maintenance is being done as needed on the bar area. By August Rooney will have an RFP in place for catering. Rooney led a discussion on recent catering concerns. Lukow requested information on the Club s percentage of lunch revenue. Since the Club gets no revenue from lunches, if a member pays by credit card, the Club is taking a loss. Discussion followed. Yard Director Jack Landwehr presented a written report: Two materials have been looked at for the wind/sand screen to be installed on the north fence. One material is used for sun screen on green houses and the other material is called Pet Proof screen. I am looking for a supplier for Pet Proof Screen. I think any home building center would have a sample. Pet Proof will be the material of choice if the cost is in line with the budget. Samples of the sun screen material is in the Yard Director s mail box for your viewing pleasure. I hope to have the material in house by the end of July and then installed the screen by the first week of August. Visit RYC s Website at for the most up-to-date information, events and race results. Thanks to all the members that have taken time to plant flowers and herbs on the RYC grounds. The grounds look great! Special thanks to Lynn Landwehr for donating the children s swing set. and thanks to the members for assembling it last month. Over the 4th of July the set got quite a good work out. Thanks to Ed Bergles for supplying the electric chisel hammer for helping break up the cement footings for the gate to the grey enclosure. The new posts for the gate are solid. The gate is good for another 10 years. The July 4th picnic and fireworks went off without a hitch. RYC once again provided parking on the RYC grounds or Rooney lot for all members and guests. There was still room for 15 vehicles on the RYC property as of 9pm. The Yard Director wants to thank all RYC members for their cooperation parking their cars on the 4th of July. People that left immediately after the fireworks said that next year they will wait an hour or so before leaving to avoid that the traffic jam going up the hill and traffic congestion driving through the city streets of Racine. The RYC lawn will be watered via water pumped from the lake. Since we have had rain this past week and today, the first watering is scheduled for Thursday, July 11th. The grass is in good condition considering all the dancing on the grass during the past two parties. Plastic lawn chairs are available on the south lawn. Please turn the chair upside down when finished. This keeps the chair clean for the next user. Canoes and kayaks are available. After using them, please place the water craft back on the rack and place the paddles under the rack. As a reminder, PFD s must in the craft when in use. Grills are available, but please be sure to clean them after each use. Valves on the grill propane tanks are to remain open at all times. Thanks to Judy Cook and Bill Jelinek for donating their propane Weber grill to RYC. Finally, litter on the grounds is everyone s responsibility. Please do your part as an RYC member and help pick up unclaimed litter. Smokers, please refrain from smoking on or near the ramp to the Club house door. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated by the RYC Yard Dick. Entertainment See this month s calendar on page 4 for additional coming events. 3 Chester Krusienski Celebrates the Century Mark! Chester V. Krusienski of Racine will celebrate his 100th birthday later this month. Krusienski was born on August 18, 1913, in Racine. Krusienski was married for 75 years to the former Julia Joo, who passed away in Krusienski began his love of boats and sailing at a very young age. He built his first sailboat when he was nine years old. At 13 he became the youngest member of the Racine Yacht Club. At that time the Yacht Club needed a third boat to receive its charter. Chet agreed to join and provide his boat. He was honored as a lifetime member 50 years later. Over the years he has captained his sailboats to numerous victories in a variety of Lake Michigan races such as the Mackinac and Queen s Cup. His home is adorned with a myriad of trophies earned over the years. He worked for the U.S. Government during WW II, using his boat building skills to assist the U.S. Navy construct high speed specialty boats in a factory alongside the Root River where the Main Street Bridge is currently located. He worked at the Douglas Theater, which was owned by his family and where he met his wife. The Theater was sold to the Fox Corporation in the early 50 s. Then, he and his wife, Julia, opened the Camera House on Douglas Avenue where they worked side-by-side, until they closed in He has built intricate wood models of sailboats and ships based upon extensive research he conducted. These boats have been purchased by people in England, France, Holland, San Francisco, Seattle, Racine, and other locations around the world. A number of members of the Racine Yacht Club and their families are owners of his models. Krusienski has three children: Brian of Chicago, Gale (Tom) Haakensen of Racine, and Joy (Gary) Vaillancourt of Racine. He has four grandchildren, and one greatgrandchild. Gary and Joy Vaillancourt, Chet s son-in-law, and daughter submitted this article.
