5 Ol Joe s Tall Ship Sail and Trip to Barbados By Joe McGauran I start this at the end of my trip. On my last day on Barbados I woke up to the sound of pouring rain. I got dressed and headed for the restaurant for a buffet breakfast. By the time I finished the sun had appeared and it started to get hot. I grabbed my notebook and headed to the pool to catch some rays. I was so hot in the sun, I was soon in the pool. Early this year I sold some trees on a small piece of land I own in Marinette County. I haven t found a way to take it with me, so I called the Star Clippers as advertised in the Reef Point but was unable to find the cruise I wanted. I called my travel agent, Kathy Grant, and she soon found this cruise from Barbados to the Grenadines and back to Barbados for 7 days. I had always wanted to see Barbados so I opted for two more nights on the island. I flew to Miami and changed planes and landed in Barbados at 2300 hrs. (Atlantic time is 2 hrs. ahead). I was picked up at the airport and taken to my hotel. I asked the driver (right hand steering) why there were no ads for Mt. Gay rum and she replied, We don t have to. The next day I had breakfast and headed to the pool. The Savannah Beach hotel was beautiful, located on the ocean with two large pools and three restaurants. Soon I was in a cab headed for the cruise dock. I had a few hours to kill before I could board. So I read, watched people and had ice cold smoothie. As we boarded the Royal Clipper (RC) the Captain greeted us and the crew passed champagne. I was soon checked aboard and found my cabin; aft on the port side. The Royal Clipper is the largest square rigged sailing ship still in use. She is 439 long: her five masts carry 42 sails that total 56,000 square feet of sail. She carries 226 passengers with a crew of 106. I changed clothes and headed to the bar for a rum punch. Dinner was served at 19:30 and you were able to sit where you wanted. That night I chose to sit next to a beautiful English nurse. We had a few choices each of a five course dinner. Salads and desserts were delicious. My cabin was beautiful with a double bed, head with a shower, marble vanity, hanging locker and a TV that had one English speaking channel (CNN World) and GPS. We also had a DVD player and you could get a variety of movies from the Purser for free. The next day I found myself awake at 4:30 and craving coffee. I found coffee, croissants and fresh fruit. I walked the deck and noted that we were powering downwind with the staysails set as steading sails. I went forward to the bridge and found the Executive Officer standing his watch. After a buffet breakfast, I was going to relax on the deck when I noted the swim platform was down and there were two small sailboats, paddle boards, kayaks and small rafts. I spoke to the attendant and asked if I could take a sailboat for a quick sail. I changed into sailing clothes and added another layer of sunscreen and off I went. Great sail! After my return I sat in the shade and read. It was sure nice to be warm! That evening we sailed to Grenada. I had signed up the day before to take an excursion called Shadowfax Sailing. We got on a tender and went ashore and boarded on a bus to take us to another pier where we were loaded onto a 40 catamaran. We powered out of the harbor and set sail for Hog Island on the south end of the island. At Hog Island we anchored and snorkeled to a nearby reef. After a short swim we were back aboard (only two band aids) and sailed for home. We were served rum punch which I did not decline. We got back to ship after dark but in time for diner. On Tuesday morning we arrived at the Tabago Cays. I just laid low and enjoyed the sun, water and scenery. At noon we were taken to the beach for a bar-b-que. They served salads, fruit, chicken, ribs, hamburgers and hot dogs. As always, the desserts were great. That evening I went to the bar for a drink before dinner. I sat next to Chuck a professed red neck living in Vero Beach, Fl. Chuck and I started talking and he had been on all the Star Clipper lines and many other cruise ships. When he was working, he was an insurance adjuster for major claims such as the Exxon Valdez. Chuck never stopped talking. The following morning we found ourselves anchored in the bay at Kingstown, St Vincent. I had signed up for the Garden of Eden Tour. A small group of us took a tour of the island. It truly was the Garden of Eden. I probably drove our guide crazy with my questions regarding the island. We reached a public garden and had a rest stop. As we loaded back on the bus we were offered a rum punch. I don t know what the rum was or how much was in the punch, but it hit me like a ton of bricks. Upon my return to the ship I had a nap and headed for the bar for a non-alcoholic 5

6 Ol Joe s Tall Ship Sail and Trip to Barbados, cont d drink. I met Chuck and we had dinner and then went to the deck to watch the crew unfurl the sails. The next morning we were moored at Fort de France on the island of Martinique. I had gone to the gym and worked out and after my breakfast, I went ashore and went to a pharmacy and bought the most amazing French shaving gel and then on to a super market with great looking produce (some things I had never heard of) and a fish section. All the fish were frozen. I stopped at a small Mexican restaurant for a beer and to use their Wi-Fi. The ship always seemed to be having trouble with their system. When I got back on board, I had a light lunch and then laid in the shade and read. That evening we sailed to Marigot Bay on St. Lucia. A very new island geologically with very sharp peaks. decongestant so I asked a young man for directions to a pharmacy. I then needed a notebook and he took me to a dime store. I offered to buy him a beer so we went to a nearby bar and each had a cold beer. Drinks were really cheap. Two Appleton Rums were 7.00 EC (Eastern Caribbean) which is $3.50. I went back to the pier to wait for the tender and noticed a small bar at the foot of the pier so I had a fruit punch. I spoke to the manager of a resort and he said most of the island was prosperous. That evening we set sail for Barbados. I woke up and we were sailing south at 3 knots. Soon after I felt the ship turn and head east and then the motor started. After breakfast I disembarked and stood in the chaos of the customs line, I found a cab and was whisked back to the Savannah Beach. While I had a beer at the beach bar, my room was ready; a beautiful room, a few steps from the pool, Caribbean, and beach bar and restaurant. I had a swim and nap in the shade. I had dinner at the beach restaurant. told me that there was a surfing competition on the Island each year. It was marvelous tour and our four-hour tour had turned into a six. I thanked Fernando and gave him a generous tip. Then I had a cooling dip and a nap followed by an overcooked fish dinner. Wind mill to crush sugar cane In the morning I went for a sail on the Pico and was soon warned that I could not go to the beach and had to stay in sight of the attendants. That afternoon we drifted along the coast to Soufiere also on St. Lucia. The most prosperous area of Soufriere There were tenders running every ½ hour to the shore so I jumped at the opportunity to go ashore. Soufriere is a very poor village located on the shore. I needed some This is where Mt. Gay is distilled The next morning I had arranged for a guided tour of Barbados. Fernando showed up promptly and I was his only passenger. We arranged for a 4 hour tour of the island. Our first stop was at an ATM so I could get Barbados dollars to pay for my tour. At that point I was carrying four different currencies; US dollars, Euros, East Caribbean and Barbados. I bought both of us a bottle of water and off we went. Fernando and I circumnavigated the entire Island. Some of the island was incredibly poor while other parts were very wealthy. Fernando said that the sugar industry was not doing well due to the low cost of sugar. When we got to the windward side of the island, it reminded me of the Pacific Islands with wide beaches and big surf. Fernando Marina Windward side of Barbados My Fernando trip & home I circumnavigated was uneventful the entire and Is everyone was on time. 6
