FEB 16: Valentine s Day Specials MAR 3: Thoughts for Food REEF POINT For the encouragement and promotion of yachting and the creation of a spirit of good fellowship (RYC Constitution, Article II) February 2018 Racine Yacht Commodore s Report What a winter so far, bone chilling cold for what seems like weeks followed by 50 and sunny. This freeze thaw cycle is getting old. One nice thing is the ice boating has had the best looking ice we have seen in many years. Delavan Lake has 12 inches of crystal clear ice and a view to the lake bottom in 15 feet of water. Sailing was outstanding and now we are back to snow. Not much different than summer sailing around here, hurry up and wait. Your Board has been working hard and have passed a budget for this next year. We are planning on a big repair job on our pier system. This winter has not been good to us in the harbor. Insurance has been contacted along with steel suppliers and a work barge. Along with this, our membership committee has proposed an update to the membership classifications and dues structure. For many years we have increased the dues by a small percentage each year. With a large expense like our pier fix, we are proposing a onetime increase of dues (Active approx. $50) and holding this dues rate for some time. This helps the with immediate dollars to keep our pier up and running. Other changes to membership combine Associate and Social. This new class Associate, will be a year-round membership with full use of the but limited boat access. Please see details in this Reefpoint. Looking to get your work or pay in? We are looking for some good workers for our annual. If you would like to help, please come down to the any day February Pat and his committee will have plenty of chores to fill each day. A white board in the entrance will have the many jobs posted, just pick 1 or 5 and do your best to make your BEAUTIFUL. Adult sailing program is just around the corner. This does fill up, so tell your friends and neighbors. This has been a good source of new members and we need to support this. Thanks to the many volunteers for their time and boating skills to making this successful. A reminder regarding making payment with your credit card. We are all trimming budgets and looking for best return on our investments. One thing to cut expenses is to minimize use of credit cards. We are still paying about $5,000/yr for credit card charges when members pay their bill by credit card. We know this is convenient, but when you turn in your points for Nites on Delavan Lake Nites waiting for a breeze and adventurous sailors. Racine, Wisconsin free miles, it s costing our real money. This money can be used for improvements that benefit all of us. Please consider online bank payments or call Kim, she can easily set you up with your bank. One more thing that can help with our pier cost is to take advantage of the long term slip lease. The gets money up front and you get a discount over the three years. Please see your slip lease agreement. We have a great looking wall across from the bar with many beautiful boats the problem is that some of these boats/ members are no longer with us. Let s get these photos updated. All you need to do is ask, get an appropriate photo of your boat and you can be on the wall, part of the s history. Let s get this wall updated. I wish the many members that are heading south, as I will be shortly, warm winds and smooth seas. Don t forget, this is your get involved! 2 RYC News in Brief Meetings/ Hours From the January Board meeting minutes: Treasurer Frank Randall reported: We had a loss in adjusted income for the month of December. Our yearly lease payment to the city resulted in this monthly decline. Our adjusted income for the year is much better than the loss for the same period last year. I hope we can free up some funds in the budget toward our expected pier repair costs this spring. Lake Michigan went down three inches during the last month, but is eleven inches above January 2017 levels. It is projected to drop one inch during the next month. From Commodore John Stanley: John asked the Board to set the goal to focus on income and expenses while facing the cost of pier repair. From Office Manager Kim : Kim received a call from the health department regarding Pink Magnolia registering for a permit for catering service. From Vice Commodore Fritz Wichman: I would like to continue the membership discussion in two main areas: Increasing new membership and the type of memberships we offer. When I look at yacht clubs with larger memberships such as Chicago and Milwaukee I ask myself what they are doing differently, and the answer I find is not much. I feel that our offers more benefits at a better price making RYC a better return on investment for our current and perspective members. So the difference I see between Chicago/Milwaukee and the RYC is that they are pulling from a larger population pool. So how do we increase our population pool? We add a corporate option for new members. Within 50 miles of the we have several large companies, SC Johnson, FoxConn, Walgreens, Case, and Allstate all come to mind. If we offered a membership that basically mirrored the Associate membership but at a discounted price say $100 off, then these larger companies would offer it to their employees as a employee perk much like a gym membership or discounted cell service. I would suggest that we limit this discounted membership to first year new member only. They would have to switch to an Associate or Active membership for second year and beyond. Their rights and monthly spend would be the same as an Associate. We could also offer this type of first year discounted membership to military and municipal employees as well. The benefit to this would be to increase our exposure of RYC to thousands of younger working class people in the area at no real added cost to the. We need to be thinking about different types of advertising and promotions. Whether it be plugging the itself or related activities, we need a larger presence on Google search and social media. I am aware that this is added expense which may be difficult with the damage to the pier system, but the topic warrants further discussion. From Rear Commodore Amy Cermak: The US Sailing Small Boat Instructor Course will be held at RYC June and has 1 person signed up. Plans are in the works to present an intro to sailing at Red Apple school this February to showcase our summer sailing camp. Buck Mercer is planning a C420 and Laser racing clinic at RYC on Feb 20th. We are poised to replace the halyards, sheets, control lines, and some hardware on the four 420s. Plans are to rig them the same as the two new boats. The boats are inside at Riverside so the work can be performed this winter. From Membership Secretary Sean Fox: The Board approved Stewart Doty - active member and Anne Swanson s Visit RYC s Website at for the most up-to-date information, events and race results. See this month s calendar on page 4 for additional coming events: February 1 7:00pm New Member Meeting 8 7:00pm Board Meeting 15 7:00pm General Membership Meeting March 1 7:00pm New Member Meeting 8 7:00pm Board Meeting 15 7:00pm General Membership Meeting WINTER CLUB HOURS Mon., Tues. Total number members 269. Planning for open house(s) dates. Other events that Sean is exploring RYC involvement include: Party on the Pavement, Reef Point events and getting out information during race events at RYC. Sean is currently finalizing details with the membership committee regarding structure changes to membership which will be presented at the next General Membership Meeting. This requires a change to bylaws. Mark Lukow has agreed to work on this. From House Director Patrick Sullivan: Grease trap is leaking. The plumber has been here to see the problem. Continued on page 3 In Memoriam Margarete Hendrickson passed away in early January. We extend sincere condolences to Gary and family during this difficult time. 2

3 News in Brief, cont d haven t received a formal quote yet from him, but the estimate to replace is between $1200 and $2000. Eddie made a request to us to get the flat top griddle back up and running in the galley. Because of code, the char broiler and griddle don t both fit under the hood in the galley. We called in a firm to give us a quote to extend the hood so that both pieces of equipment would fit under it. They said the type of hood we have cannot be extended we would need to replace the entire thing with a longer one. The quote came back at $37,060. This seems to be an impossible expense for us at this time. We are looking into used equipment. This may allow us to purchase a stove with a built-in griddle or char broiler so that we can have all of our equipment fit under the current hood configuration. Shut Down will be February We have several projects (mostly cleaning type work) to be completed during that time. Carpet will be cleaned, equipment will be cleaned, floors, bathrooms, etc. The grease trap replacement will be completed during this time frame. From Pier Director Frank Gall: The pier has sustained major damage. Frank has already contacted Big Lake Marina to plan on repairs in March or April. Estimates for materials include an estimate for pilings at $8,600, and frames at $5,700. The insurance agent has been contacted. The most that can be received from insurance coverage is $13,000. From Yard Director Mike Frietag: Request for quotes to provide spring and fall (possibly summer) lawn maintenance for the RYC were sent to four companies: Milaeger s Lawn Care. Lakeshore Lawn. Chapman Lawn Care. Horizon Landscape. As of now, only Milaeger s came back with a quote. The prices are reasonable. I will contact the other companies closer to spring. I created an informational sign for the proposed paddle dock with rules for use of the craft along with the code of Federal regulations regarding the requirements for life jackets. John Stanley and Scott Lewis reviewed the information and thought it was acceptable. From Race Director Fred Stritt: Fred was absent but submitted the following report: The application to the state for X Mark placement has been resent. RYC will be hosting the Blue Star regatta during RYC regatta August 4-5. It is a qualifier for their district. I contacted Tony Karwowski and Gary Chu regarding the catamaran group. Gary had no new information other than what Bob had relayed to us, at the last board meeting. Gary is going to try to get in touch with other people in the group. It s a work in progress. I am working with South Shore Yacht to get their Racine race changed to August 3 (Friday night) date so they would be at RYC regatta. And possibly stay and race! RYC has yet to receive payment for the damage caused to the committee boat last summer. The Sea Ray 26 is up for sale. Proposed race fees for 2018: All Races $160 to $190 RYC Regatta $60 to $75 Blue Nose $35 to $50 Combo $115 Regattas $115 Single race $20 From Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson: New Years was a well-attended event. About 60 couples had a great time. January: 1st. Thursday Karaoke night is off to a great start. 27th The Pizza Bake Off Rules include: All pizzas baked here at the. Chef Mike in charge of the oven. Voting details put forth the day of the event. February: Karaoke Show, Thursday, is Feb. 1st. Valentines will be Friday the 16th. Shakin Not Stirred will be performing a lounge act from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. Eddie s Valentine Special will be announced soon. March: Rick and Laurie Hennig have brought it to my attention that after 20 plus years of doing the St. Pats Party, that they are through. The Board agreed to have Eddie put on the meal. Kurt will need to enlist people to decorate. From Staff Commodore Bob Sample: No Report Committee Reports By-Laws: Mark Lukow Mark is in the process of making the necessary changes to the bylaws with regard to changes in membership which is proposed (see proposal in this issue). Hook: Scott has prepared a video of the Hook. There are already two entries for the 2018 Hook. RYC Youth Sailing Program: Proposed schedule is out. RYC Youth Foundation: Aaron Cruthers donated $9,500 for naming rights of a 420. Communications Nancy Catrine wrote to thank Jack and Jason for a job well done at the Splash and Dash. RYC received notice of the Canada Cup This notice is posted on the bulletin board. RYC Youth Foundation: There will be a fundraising event in the next few months. It will be designed to expand scope to the community. UNFINISHED BUSINESS The budget was discussed and approved. NEW BUSINESS Members are asked to provide new boat pictures for the wall in the bar.
