COMING EVENTS Easter Fishing Tournament Friday 25 th Sunday 27 th March Earlybird Entries Close Saturday 12 th March Quiz Night Friday 15 th April 7.30pm Welcome Aboard To These New Members John Tilby. Philip Wilson Craig Metcalfe Derek Watson Jacqui Hornby Blair Hansen Commodores Report With the wonderful summer weather we have been experiencing, the first few months of the year have been busy within the Club. Our Property & Grounds Committee have also taken advantage of the great weather and they have organised the painting of the exterior of the club rooms, the waterproofing and recoating of the deck. The entrance garden will get a spruce up before Easter. The Fishing Committee are working hard organising the biggest event on our Clubs calendar, the Easter Fishing Tournament. 2

The club rooms will be transformed with sponsors banners and chock full of fisherpeople. We have arranged for the fabulous weather to continue for the duration of the Tournament so that we will also see those fisher people lining up to weigh in their catches. We have a great club with a load of talented members and we would like to rope in some of these talents. We have a few people within the club doing a lot of work and we would really like to spread that load. We are looking for a person with secretarial skills and who is computer literate to take over as Fishing Secretary, this is predominantly a summer job and not hugely complicated but does entail some time leading up to Easter. Prior to and during Easter we are looking for a mature person who can manage the til and help with the dishes in the Kitchen. The Wind and Spray needs a new Editor, for the past seven years I have produced the Wind & Spray and it is time for a change. In its present form it involves one/two days work every two months. The job also involves sending out the news regularly, again not difficult in itself just needs a regular time set aside to do it. Lastly Richard, our trusted Treasurer is retiring at the end of August and we would like to get another Treasurer lined up so that the handover is seamless. We use the MYOB accounting package and we are looking for a person familiar with good bookkeeping practices. If you are interested in any of these position or know of someone who may be, or are just able to help out occasionally, please contact me either by phone or . Paula Bary, Commodore 3

Entries are rolling in and we are looking forward to a great weekend fishing this Easter. The Earlybird prize is a trip for two to Fiji, now we know Fiji has been hit by a huge cyclone but not all the island was devastated and our resort is ready and waiting for tourists again, don t be put off by the publicity get your entries in for a chance to win this wonderful prize. vtnz the Warrant of Fitness experts in your neighbourhood There s no need to book for your WoF inspection - just drive on in vtnz even send you an ed reminder when your WoF is due Fast and convenient vtnz Malden St & Tremaine Ave Palmerston North Proud to supply the windscreen pockets for your boat ramp passes 5

Attention Boaties, a message from our Radio Operators: The radio operators have had quite a few radio issues this last month. Some we are addressing and some you can help us with. Please make sure that your marine radios are on International setting. If you have trouble setting your radio up, then please ring Glenda or Fred on and we will organise to do it for you. Our transmissions go through a transmitter, this means there is a couple of seconds delay in transmission. We are finding the beginning of a message or the end of one is being cut off which means we have to ask for the info again. When you want to lodge a trip report please push the talk button wait a ½ second, give your report slowly and clearly, wait a ½ second and let the button go. This insures that your message is transmitted in its entirety without being cut off. If you are on USA or some other setting, your call may not be heard as it will not go through the repeater but only aerial to aerial and this means that only 2 of our operators will be able to hear your call and they may not be the ones on duty. Please make sure that your radio is maintained well and that your aerial is in good condition. We are pleased to see some boaties making trip reports when they are going up river. This is a really good thing to do as you can get in as much trouble up river as you can out at sea. There are hidden logs, sand banks and you can break down, so next time you are in the river, please consider making a trip report and help keep yourself safe. Doing this also helps us eliminate trailers when we are trying to find an overdue boat. Please leave your radios on and cellphone on so we can contact you if needed. Thanks for you co- operation in these matters Happy fishing from your radio operators, Glenda, Fred, Jean and Murray 6

Sailing Report Big news!!!!! The support craft that we have been using for the last twenty years has been sold. Here is our new one being built alongside two others. This new boat needs a sponsor so if you feel that you want to put your organisation name on the side talk, to me. This will be seen every time the boat is out and being used so it s a good way to get your name out there. Last weekend was our regatta. We had twelve lasers on the water which is a very good fleet anywhere in New Zealand. The wind was very strong on the first day which provided plenty of exercise for the sailors. A little calmer on the Sunday, but still great sailing conditions. A big congratulations to Rob Cox, Henry Fyles and Regan Shaw: all winners in their classes. Thank you to our very generous regatta sponsors and to all of our helpers who help make this event happen. And our next event will be on the 13th March. This is a fun day event starting at This allows those who want to go to Wanganui Regatta to attend, or if you want to sail at the club, come and join us for a bit of fun in the river. Everyone is welcome. Ian Pedersen 8

Pool Club Report Our February Friendly Competition has just finished and was won by Phil Brown who only lost one game over the month. The comp is always a fun way to fill in February and is enjoyed by all. Pool Club proper started on 3 rd March with the first of the two 12 week competitions. This 12 week competition is decided on the best of your 10 nights games. If you are interested in playing social pool with healthy competition now is a good time to join in. Come along on Thursday Night at 7.00 and make yourself known to either myself or our Club Captain Bill Baker. A reminder to our Pool Club members that we ask you to register on the night by 7.00 so that we can do the draw and get games started promptly. Good luck to all members for the upcoming 2016 competition. Hope that you all have an enjoyable year in Pool. John Bary Pool Club President 11

Hi Boaties, The weather has been patchy with some good and some bad days with only one call out since the last newsletter. But we have been put on stand by several times with boaties not answering their radios when the radio operators call when their due time has gone over twenty minutes. This is policy made by the NZ Police, so please listen to your radio for Foxton Sports Radio to call. Easter is coming up fast so make sure your boats and radios are ready to go. Last Wednesday we took 20 Horizons Regional Council people up to the Whirokina bridge and out to the bar to show them the channel. Leighton spoke to 10 young Sea Scouts about boat safety and then took them all for a ride in the boat up the river, he just got back and was called to a boat needing assistance out from Himatangi. On Saturday we took 9 Canteen Kids up the river with the boat and jet ski s, they all had a great time, thanks to Leighton and his crew. Photo below. It was great to see one of the tickets our unit sold for the National Coastguard Lottery won third prize which was a Haines Hunter boat and safety gear. Safe boating and don t forget to wear your lifejackets! Skipper: Leighton Judd Crew: Scott Ward, Grant Donnelly, Damien Yalden, Reg Yalden, Eddie Bambery, Trish Huisman and Tony Huisman 12
