3 Commodores Report Happy New Year! With all the Christmas festivities behind us wasn t it great to be able to chill out and enjoy the fantastic weather over the holiday period. It was good to see so many people taking advantage of the calm weather to go fishing, and using the river for all manner of watersports. We have had a lot of members using the club and bringing in visitors which is great to see, can I remind you ensure that your guests sign the visitors book on entering the club. New Years Eve was the best ever! The sell out crowd was party to a treat with Vicky and Cindy reuniting as the String of Pearls and friends joining in, each bringing a different style to the band. A great night of entertainment. Our very enthusiastic grounds team completed the path and retaining wall from the Club to the Ramp just before Christmas. This has made a vast improvement to the area, looks good, thank you team. You may have noticed that the Club building is now looking a little tatty. We are presently preparing the building for painting so the next 6 weeks will see a huge improvement in the appearance of our Club. The annual Ambrose Golf Tournament is coming up on 30 th January, the weekend after our anniversary weekend. This is always a fun day for golfers and non golfers alike registration is open to all members, and the registration form is at the Bar now. The Kids Fishing day is being held on the Saturday of Waitangi Weekend. Bring your children / grand children along, the Police Blue Light team will be there in support and there will be a sausage sizzle. Our Lucky Members Draws have both now reached $1,000 and at present there are 2 draws each night, this will increase to 3 draws after 3 weeks and stay at $1,000 until claimed. You must have your membership card to claim the prize. Remember also to show your membership card when ordering your meal to receive a 10% discount on your meal. 3
4 Lastly Super Rugby starts on 26 th February. This promotion gained a big following last year and some strenuous competition between members. Register your interest at the Bar if you are wanting to participate in the pick the score. Yours in boating, Paula Bary Commodore Club Christmas Party The Club Christmas party and Great Christmas Give- away was a fantastic night at the club, with over $1500 worth of presents given away to members who had dined at the club over the previous 6 weeks. Its fabulous to see such great support for the club from the members Winners were: Marge Salmon Tony Stella Diane Collin Keith Swinbank Dereley Barry Scott Ward Jan Klein Alison Thomas X2 Bill Curtis X2 Bruce Culley Les Welch Finn Pedersen Robyn Harvey Kelvin Hirst X2 Val Hirst X2 Kevin Giles Jake Slykhuis David Collin Ian Pedersen Watch out for our next Tui promotion starting soon, where we will give away tickets to the Hurricanes vs Blues pre- season game at Eketahuna. 5 Fishing Report The New Year fishing competition again had to be cancelled due to bad weather, after weeks of great weather you would not believe the weather could change so dramatically last weekend. Keep practising as amongst the usual Snapper, Gurnard and Kahawai, we have seen Groper, Kingfish and a couple of Elephant Fish caught in recent weeks. In the meanwhile the Fishing Committee will be putting all our efforts into organising the Easter Fishing Tournament. Entry forms will be available at the Club and on line from 1 st February and all skippers who have entered the Easter Tournament in the past 2 years will also be sent entry forms. The cut off date for the Early Bird Prize this year is 12 March. Summer Fishing Contest has seen many changes on the leader board as some good catches are weighed in. Results from November and December are as follows. November Snapper Keith Brown 9.42 kg Gurnard Bill Pond 1.24 kg Kahawai Norm Cutler 1.90 kg Tarakihi None caught December Snapper Frank Slobbe 9.42 kg Gurnard Steve Roughton 1.40 kg Kahawai Ross Brannigan 2.42 kg Trevally None caught Kids Fishing Day is planned for Waitangi Day - Saturday 6 th February. Bring along your kids, grandchildren and neighbourhood kids and introduce them to the sport of fishing. We have had some changes within the Fishing Committee, Gary Eccleston stepped down as Coordinator and Kevin Giles has taken on the job at least until after Easter. If you think that you would like to take on this very satisfying position, please talk to Kevin or Paula and come along to a meeting to see how it all works. 5

8 Foxton Sports Radio Hi everyone, we have finally had a few really good fishing days with one weekend having 80 boats out on Saturday and 101 on the Sunday! Almost no room in the car park There are a lot of new boaties around this year so we felt it was time we did a bit of Housekeeping Our channel 64 works off a repeater which means there is a delay between transmission. We are finding quite a few folk are talking too soon when using the radio and the message beginning is getting cut off, which makes it difficult for your radio operator to get the correct information. When using your radio, you push the button in, wait a couple of seconds and then relay your message. The same happens at our end. We are also finding that some folk are talking over the top of each other. You need to make sure the channel is clear before making your call. This is how boats get missed or information gets confused and then if something goes wrong we don t know you are out there or we have the wrong details because two boats were sending at the same time. Your radio operators are a pretty smart lot but not that clever that we can hear two messages at once!! Please give your radio operators time to answer your call. We work from home and are not sitting in an office with our radios every second of the day. We could be in a different room when your call comes in and we are not speed runners so give us a minute to respond. Please also make sure your radios are set to International. If you think your message hasn t been heard then ring us on your cell phone. A few little tips which will keep you safe on the water this summer. Thanks and happy fishing from Fred, Glenda, Jean and Murray 8

10 Sailing Report I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday and got some great sailing in with the fantastic weather. As we have only had the river race since the last Wind n Spray, I can report that the river race was enjoyed by all that took part and a big thank you to the organisers of the BBQ picnic up the river, its always a great family day out with some good sailing up to Whirokino and back. With the very generous assistance of the Pelorus Trust, and the sailing section saving hard for many, many years, we are now able to purchase a new inflatable boat to replace Rescue Two - our yellow inflatable rescue boat that we have been using for the last twenty years. The order is in for the new boat and we hope to get it in March. We are looking at selling our good old faithful rescue two, so if you are interested in looking at it, please contact me. We are also looking at a sponsor for the brand new boat, so also contact me if you would like to have your name and/or logo on our new boat. This will be seen every- time the boat goes out, so will have great profile. Coming up over the next few months, we certainly hope that wind stops blowing so we can get some sailing in, we have more sailing race days and our regatta on 27th & 28th February, so as always, anyone is welcome to join in, we are always looking for more people to come sailing with us. Ian Pedersen Sailing Regatta 27 th & 28 th February 10

14 Hi Boaties, With the great weather over Christmas and the New Year there were 1300 radio calls, that s a lot of boats going out!! We had one call out to a broken down boat, other calls we were stood down before getting the boat or ski s on the water. We have got a new jet ski, (picture below) it is quite different to the old one so most crew are getting familiar with it. The boat and both ski s were used on Wednesday night for a Police call out, a possible flare sighting of Waikawa Beach, it turned out to be nothing, possibly fireworks or Chinese lanterns. The national lottery tickets are selling well, if anyone would like any please call or txt Trish on they are also available at Hammer Hardware in Foxton. There are some great prizes, tickets are $10 each, $7 of that which comes back to our unit and this helps with maintaining our gear during the year. The bar markers are up and seem to be working well, so safe boating and don t forget your life jackets. Eddie Bambery and Crew 14
