The word must be getting out that BYSC is the place to be. We've not even reached February as I write this and we've already approved 5 new members this year! Welcome to each of you. Whether you're a sailor, power boater, rower, tennis enthusiast, swimmer or social butterfly, multiple committees have been working hard to better all aspects of the club. Why not make this the year that you reconnect with the things you love. The sailing committee has put together a very comprehensive schedule with an emphasis on getting more people involved. If you've been wanting to learn what sailing is all about, this is your year as there will be things for both beginners and experts to enjoy. Our new Manager Milledge Webb brings a wealth of experience in summer camp programs, so count on a terrific summer for the kids both on and off the water. On the social scene, the Auxiliary has lined up more fun events than have ever been seen at our club before and the tennis group continues to grow their program for players of all ages. On the building and grounds scene at the club, the new metal roofs for both the clubhouse and bathhouse are complete and work has now started on cleaning up and updating the interior of the bathhouse. Combined with the new pool furniture that will be in place by the Spring, the pool is going to be a happening spot this year. For those of you with young kids, check out the new addition to the playground where a deluxe sandbox has been donated by Fran and Charlie Calvert. Check the BYSC Calendar for all the exciting upcoming events and activities and start your new year right! Larry Hamilton Commodore, BYSC

WATCH THE SUPER BOWL WITH YOUR FRIENDS AT BYSC! Join us for all the action on Sunday, Feb. 3rd! We'll have the TVs on and the bar open by 5:30pm (kickoff is at 6:30). Sunset is at 5:57.. Bring a snack to share - wear your colors - and join us to root for the 49ers or the Ravens! Your hosts are John and Marge Barber, Patrick and Patti O'Leary, Dave and Susie Roos. Call any of the above or the BYSC office for more info!

BYSC 2013 PHRF Frostbite Series. It is hard to believe this February 9 th we start the fourth year of PHRF (big boat) racing at the BYSC. In the first series we only had about four or five boats that regularly took part. The last Fall Series we had fifteen boats register, and we usually had about 9-10 taking part on any given Friday evening. We feel dividing the series into two classes has helped participation. Class A is ostensibly designed for the more serious racing boat, designed for racing such as the J-Boats, C&C s and one class designed craft. Also boats that have been brought up to race specification, with improved sails, running gear and other go fast options. All craft still need to comply with their class regulations and PHRF racing rules. Class B is ideal for the more cruising orientated boats and skippers, who do not want to have change their cruising lifestyle and the way they use their boat, but would still like to enjoy the thrill and camaraderie of yacht racing. It is also a relatively inexpensive way to get into racing. An old auto racing adage you run what you brung Craft should be pretty much as they left the factory, with standard sails, no spinnakers etc. Again all boats must comply with race regulations and PHRF racing rules. For those not familiar with the initials PHRF, they stand for (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet). What that means in English, is that it is a way of very dissimilar boats to race against each other in a fair and equitable manner. By no means is the system perfect, and is classed as an offshore racing formula - but overall it does work for the type of big boat racing we have at the BYSC, and until something better is comes along, it is the system we use. As most of the PHRF boats racing tend to be (big boats) there is always the need for crew. If you do not have a suitable boat, or one you feel you do not want to use, you could always take part as a crew member. I have started a list of folks willing to take part as crew members, with various levels of experience. In the past, it seems like the skipper who provides the coldest beer, gets the strongest crew! So there are a number of ways to take part and enjoy (big boat) racing at the BYSC. If you would like more information please contact Everett Ballenger (class captain) either on (843) or at Ballenger@hargray.com. The race registration and Notice of Race forms etc are also on the club s website.

SAILORS MEETING, FEB. 9 AT 9AM. Anyone interested in our racing program this year is welcome to attend the annual Sailors Meeting at 9am on Feb. 9. We should conclude it by noon so those PHRF sailors headed out will still have time to make the 1:30pm start. Subjects that will be discussed are: 2013 Schedule-series races and regattas; PHRF racing; River Rats: PRO and volunteer signup sheets for events; junior and high school sailing; rule changes; nautical flea market and other subjects of interest to our sailors. We hope junior sailors will attend as well. Renewed this year will be the Sunfish B fleet-led by Cheryl Potter. She offers some words of encouragement below. In addition, Sue Hamilton will give an indoctrination class for Sunfish on March 23 as well as addressing some basic rules to help keep you out of trouble on the river. Sailing lessons are also being planned. Also, check out the Racing Calendar now posted on the websitewww.byscnet.com/sailing/racing/racing calendar. In addition to the Sailors Meeting the PHRF fleet will start the first of six weeks of Frostbite racing on Feb. 9 at 1:30pm. If you want to crew or learn more about the series contact Everett Ballenger, , Ballenger@realtor.com. And, mark it down-opening day of the Spring Series is April 7. Roy Crocker is again heading up the Jean Ribaut Cup so plan now for April 6 in Port Royal Sound. Frank Pontious, Fleet Captain T , E-fponti@islc.net

Calling all Sunfish sailors! We are trying to revitalize the B Fleet this spring. Let s clean off our boats and get out on the water. For those of you who aren t familiar with the B Fleet, it is what we call those sunfish sailors who are a little less experienced but still want to get out there and race and have fun. We have some wonderful volunteers that are going to refresh our memories about rigging, racing rules, etc. Anyone who has some basic sailing skills should feel free to come out and join us. If you have never sailed before, get down to the club and take some lessons and plan to join us this summer or fall. The more the merrier! If you have any interest, please contact Cheryl Potter at or cherylspotter@me.com. We are very happy to announce Five New Memberships for the Month of January! David Pontious, Randy Dalbow, Tom and Sandy Ogle, Blair and Elizabeth Preston and Tony and Angela Deason, Welcome to the BYSC Family. We are so happy to have you!

AUXILIARY COMMITTEE REPORT To the promote social enjoyment, fellowship, and the general welfare and beautification of the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club January s Auxiliary meeting featuring a Taco Bar and Margaritas was a huge success with 50 members enjoying the evening! Many thanks to Joan Dechovitz and her crew of volunteers who made this happen. Our next meeting is Thursday, February 21 st. During the January meeting the Social Schedule for 2013 was laid out. If you enjoy the social events at our club, please consider taking on the role as key organizer of one this year. I promise you it can be a very rewarding task! One of the main goals of the Auxiliary is to make sure the same people don t end up doing all the organizing of every event. Knowing that your first event can be a little intimidating, we have set up a group of mentors (several members who have LOTS of experience with social events at BYSC) who you can turn to for help at any time. A list of all social events needing Chairs is up at the club and will be online soon, or for more info, contact Carey Kerney - careykerney@gmail.com. In December the Auxiliary bought a beautiful new antique teak cabinet that matches our tables and chairs to display the new BYSC clothing merchandise. Please take a moment to drop by the club and see the attractive items now available. Limited stock is kept at the club and more can be ordered via our website. Don t forget you can now shop online at to purchase BYSC HATS, T-SHIRTS, VESTS AND MORE!
