If you have friends or neighbors that may be interested in joining our Club, please invite them to any of our social or sailing events. From the Commodore Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club... It was The manufacturer of the then popular new Sunfish was trying to duplicate that success in a catamaran called a Catfish (which turned out to be a bust). Ned Brown who was a BYSC board member and staff photographer for the Beaufort Gazette wanted an action shot for the paper. So your commodore (18 years old at the time) obliged. If he asked today? I doubt it!! We had a terrific Commissioning Day and Flag Raising Ceremony at the club on March 30. I was so pleased that we had many past BYSC commodores in attendance, including some who are no longer members. Our club has a history of great volunteer leadership and I hope you had a chance to meet some from many years ago. Marvin Dukes was our earliest commodore attendee (48 years ago in 1964) and was able to be with us with his wife Cilla. And we gave special recognition to Nancy Sproul who was our first lady as a BYSC Commodore in We think Nancy was also the first lady to serve as a Commodore at any South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (SAYRA) club. What a special person she is! Other pictures are in this issue of the Bow Watch and on the club website. And thanks so much to our Auxiliary Committee for arranging that event as well as the Open House on April 1. That committee is working hard to make this a big year for social events and parties. They held a wine tasting with great hors d oeuvres at their last meeting. If you want to be part of a fun group, get involved with them at their next meeting. Commissioning Day marks the start of the small boat racing season with our Spring Series. Come out to the club almost any Sunday afternoon and enjoy the scene with lots of sailboats out on the water. The PHRF big boat winter series has ended, but the Ribaut Cup will be coming up this month. Watch for club s about this. John Barber had a very good turnout for the annual River Rats training on March 17. He and Marge do a wonderful job with that. See pictures in this Bow Watch of that training. Thank you to all who serve on the race committees and work the mark boats for our races. We couldn t do without you. It also looks like we will be hosting the JY 15 Nationals at BYSC in September. This is another great opportunity to showcase what we have at BYSC. Your Board is seeking ways to increase our membership. Having more members will give us the financial flexibility to undertake some improvement projects without incurring additional debt. We have extended an offer to past members, who have dropped out of the club, to rejoin us at a reduced initiation fee if they rejoin by June 30. The economy has taken its toll on some of our friends who have left us. If you know of some who might be interested in BYSC again, please let them know that we want them. Call Bo for details. 2 BYSC Race Weekend April featuring the Classic Boat Rally & the Jean Ribaut Cup Welcome to the Seventh Annual Classic Boat Rally ( CBR ) being held on the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) for sailboats of classic design having an overall length of 15 to 24 feet, combining the adventure of sailing from Savannah, GA to Dataw Island, SC, racing daily along the journey, and sharing social interaction on shore in the evenings. Note that you can stay ashore at night in comfortable accommodations, or you may stay on your boat if you prefer. The event begins on Thursday, April 19th, at the Savannah Yacht Club, arrives Friday, April 20th at the South Carolina Yacht Club (Windmill Harbor on HHI), arrives at BYSC in time for the Jean Ribaut Dinner Party on April 21st, with the final leg from BYSC to Dataw Island Marina on April 23rd. There are lots of logistical challenges with this event, along with some great food and beverage. Please visit or /call Woody Norwood snorwood3@me.com for more information regarding this event. The Jean Ribaut Cup is held at BYSC on Saturday, April 21st. There is a skippers meeting and cocktail party at the BYSC Clubhouse at 6pm. Boats will be departing BYSC for the Port Royal Sound Race Course at ~8:30am. A catered dinner party and awards ceremony will take place Saturday evening. 3 We managed to get one race just one race in on Saturday 17th, the final race day of the Frostbite PHRF series. What winds there were came from SSW. Although very light, the winds were fairly constant, and it was hoped they would pick up a little for a second race. But alas the winds did not cooperate and any thoughts of a second race was abandoned. We had a great showing again - with nine boats attempting to start the race. It was defiantly a day for the lighter boats with only four managing to finish the race. Stray Cat managed to snag a marker buoy anchor line just before the start, thus by the time the rudder was removed and replaced, we were pushed well away from the start line, and in the very light conditions and strong flood tide, took eons to get back up to the start line. We managed fourth in the end, ahead of us was II Salty Dogs, second Myrdie III and taking line honors the very rapid Dolce! Dolce owned and Skipper by Alan Dechovitz also wins the 2012 " Frostbite Series " - Stray Cat (Everett Ballenger) second and third Rickie Akers with Loki. Congratulations to Alan and his crew for a well sailed series. But as we had three different winners in the series it shows that if the stars and planets are aligned correctly - Dolce can be beaten! Judging by some of the feedback I have had, we had a great series, and competitors seem to have had a good time. The "Big Boat" PHRF racing seems to grow bigger with each series. We had between 7-9 boats start each race which is a very strong showering, considering how long the series has been running. Even though the "Frostbite Series" is over, there is still lots of "Big Boat" racing through the year. So keep your boats tuned and your crews happy!! 5 Please welcome new BYSC members David & Sheila Tindall Bill & Kendra Cheney Ashley & Katherine Hefner Easter Egg Hunt was fantastic! About 40 kids showed up to decorate Easter cookies, do arts and crafts and hunt for eggs. It was a happy morning at BYSC and even came complete with a conservation lesson when the kids emptied the candy from their eggs into their baskets and we gathered the eggs to be used again next year! Many thanks to Amy and Chris Geier, Mary and John Lohr and Erica and Mike Freeman for putting together a great party!!

6 Sunset Friday hosts are needed for many of our Friday events in April and May. This is a great way to both meet new members and relax a bit. There is a signup sheet on the screen porch, or if there is a specific Friday you wish to assist with please the office bysc@islc.net and we ll get you on the calendar. Installation of Russell Harley as BYSC Commodore in Russell was a charter member, also served a second term as Commodore in , and was selected as a Topsail Society member in Russell and Kitty are still club members. The Family Fishing Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, April 26th. Details will be available soon.

9 BYSC Auxiliary Committee Report The new BYSC Auxiliary has really started to blossom and the actions of the multiple sub-committees are being seen all over the club. The March monthly meeting was a very enjoyable combination of heavy hors d ouerves and a tantalizing wine tasting, while members mingled and discussed various ongoing projects. Many thanks to Joan Dechovitz for organizing the food, and to Carey Kerney for the wine tasting. The Landscaping committee has been working hard clearing out old shrubs and brush all around the club, and has done a particularly nice job transforming the area around the newly painted flagpole with attractive plants, flowers and new sod. Nancy and Marvin Day are responsible for the beautiful new plants in gorgeous ceramic pots on the back deck. And this committee has many more plans in the works to beautify other areas of the club. Two green thumbs up to Chuck Rushing for heading up this group. The Auxiliary took on organizing the food and the decorating for the recent March 30th Flag raising / Past Commodore s party. What a beautiful event that was! Our Commodore, Andy Kinghorn, really made each past Commodore feel special and all who attended will fondly remember that night. Everyone learned a lot about the history of our club. Angie Williams and her crew did an exceptional job of making the evening extra special with phenomenal food, presentation and decorations. March 31 st the kids got a visit from the Easter Bunny at BYSC and were scurrying around gathering up eggs. From what I hear, the parents had as much fun as the kids. The April 1 st Open House for new members was another project taken on by the Auxiliary. This was taken to a whole new level with Erica Dickerson, Catherine Lyons and Caryl Sweet spearheading it. They decorated the club beautifully with flowers and organized an innovative, interactive program to welcome potential new members, ensuring they would get to see all that our club has to offer, while enjoying great food and drink. I not only had potential new members telling me what a nice event it was, but many existing members going out of their way to say what a great day it was. Great job by all! The Building Committee has met and made a final list of improvements that they want to do to our kitchen. You should see some very significant improvements in the coming months. Mike and Esther Long have worked hard to get this group going. The new on-line BYSC Directory is moving along courtesy of the Membership/Communications committee. If you haven t already gotten your pictures taken, John Dickerson is attending many different events at the club to make this happen. There is also work started to source out some new cool BYSC merchandise/clothing. Merilyn and Calvin Smith are working on plans to start group afternoon card playing at the club, so watch for that in the Bow Watch or weekly BYSC News. Carey Kerney and her Social Committee have put together a very full Social schedule for the year with lots to look forward to all ages. Check this out on the BYSC Website. April s Auxiliary meeting will be WEDNESDAY, April 18 th (the club was already rented for the 3 rd Thursday of the month when our usual meetings are scheduled). More great food and a Beer Tasting will be on hand for this next fun meeting. If you haven t already attended one of these meeting, you re missing out. Come on out and join us.
