This month I want to especially thank the many members who donated funds to make the new cooking pavilion by the swimming pool a reality. Some of you know the back story as to why it took much longer than originally anticipated and why the final cost was significantly more than budgeted/authorized by the Board of Directors. If you are not aware, ask me sometime and I will explain. Suffice it to say here that it has been an uphill battle, and it has been made clear that the days of BYSC members wielding saws and hammers to construct a project like this ourselves are behind us. Oh, the world we live in. Also, though the structure is now in place, there is still some landscaping, hardscaping, and equipment installation to be done before it is truly complete. Please be patient with those who are coordinating this project it has already become a very popular addition to our facility and will be even more so when finished. Busy, busy, busy! Early summer is here and thinks are really hopping. BYSC Summer Camp and Junior Sailing of Beaufort Learn to Sail both get under way this month. Steak Night on the 10 th. Hummock Rendezvous the 13 th. The Lowcountry Regatta is the 27 th & 28 th. Crowds at the pool and the tennis courts. Many, many boats launching and retrieving and/or at the docks. If you have been to the club lately, particularly on weekends, you cannot help but have noticed the increased level of activity pretty much everywhere on the property; which is great!! Speaking of boats. When it comes to boating, it is a fact that we only have a limited amount of dockage available for us all to share. Please be courteous to other members when launching or retrieving your boat and particularly with respect to leaving your boat at the dock overnight. As per the club rules, during all but the dead of winter months, each member is allowed only three nights per month at the club docks. Stretching this rule may not have an adverse impact on your fellow members on most week nights, but the weekends (and many of the nights late in the week when the tides are right for the sandbar) are a different story. Please, if you are not planning to use your boat again the same day and/or very early the next, please put your boat back on the trailer and or mooring to help make room for others. And for outboards, please do not leave your boat at the docks with the motor up. Motors down is safer for everyone and helps keep more space available. It is your club come enjoy it - Chuck

2 Dear Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club Members, With summer approaching, the summer camp is about to embark on another wonderful season. With almost half of the available slots for registration filled, I would recommend signing up your children as soon as possible, for once the registrations are filled, there will be no additional openings. Starting in May, summer camp staff will be starting training at the yacht club. Our staff has a variety of talents ranging from fishing, day care and child care, lifeguarding, boating, teaching, and local knowledge of the Beaufort River. They will be undergoing training that will give them all lifeguarding certifications, Auxiliary Coast Guard safe boating training, as well as camp community life, teaching workshops and experience leading kayaking and paddle boarding tours. Our camp will start June 8 th, 2015 at 9:00am. When you arrive, please make sure that you have read the camper/parent packet that is located on the BYSC website: In that packet is a medical form, liability waiver, permission to treat and information regarding things to bring for camp. Your child cannot participate in the camp activities until we have a medical form and the waiver signed. Please feel free to contact the club if you have any questions regarding the packet. Also Like our camp Facebook page to get day to day updates and photos of your campers while they are participating in our programs! Thank you for your support as we prepare for the summer. Our goal at BYSC is to enrich your children, help them to grow and learn. Camp is meant to give children a fun, safe environment to build self-confidence, meet lifelong friends, and learn new activities and hobbies that are safe and empowering. 3 The Low Country Regatta is coming fast. Wanted to give you an update on what we are doing, when we are doing it, and you know the why. Friday, June 26 th : Sailors from across the Southeast will start arriving. We will have our typical Last Friday of the Month Celebration, just with a few more people. Please bring your favorite hors d oeuvres to share and come enjoy the fun! Saturday, June 27 th : The day begins early with breakfast being served to our sailing guests and box lunches being made for all of the volunteers on the water. Registration for the sailors continues and sometime mid day, depending on the wind, the race begins. We have Fat Patties serving hamburgers for lunch. If you haven t experienced this regatta before, it s worth braving the heat to come enjoy the camaraderie and support the sailors. Saturday Afternoon: To keep everyone from starving, dinner is not till 7:00 pm, and for those non seafood lovers, we will have the Mellow Mushroom food truck starting at 2:00 pm. Their pizza is fantastic. Saturday Night: Cocktails begin at 6:00 pm for the Commodores Reception with the Low Country Boil dinner following at 7:00 pm catered by Sea Eagle Seafood. We have my favorite local band, The Bull Grapes, playing; great food, wonderful music and an incredible setting, a hard combination to beat! Please make a reservation for dinner soon, getting a head count will really help! Sunday, June 28 th : Its deja vu all over again, breakfast being served to the sailors, lunches being made for the volunteers on the water and Fat Patties comes back for an encore lunch. Sunday Afternoon: Awards ceremony, clean up and much needed sleep. Thanks for your interest and support, look forward to seeing everyone.

4 Well Folks Summer is here and in full swing. LCR is just a few weeks away so if your interested in volunteering please contact the office. Its really gotten busy here in a hurry and Im glad to say that things are going great. Camp and Swimming Pool are going strong and the kids are having a blast. The available positions are listed below with a brief description of the expected duties. Look it over and feel free to contact me via if you have any questions or if you would like to volunteer. 6 The Hummock Rendezvous A Two-Day Boating adventure June 13-14, 2015 A few years ago, Ricky Akers and some Beaufortonian friends bought a small island near the intersection of Trenchard s Inlet and Station Creek, between St. Phillips Island and Capers Island. To see the location area click on On their Island, which they call Hummock, are two basic dwellings having 13 bunks total. Ricky invites members of Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club and guests to come for a visit on June 13-14, Sailors and motor-boaters are welcome. This is The Hummock Rendezvous. Ricky, with some help from others, will cook dinner of Hummock Stew. Inside overnight-sleeping accommodations will be allocated by Ricky (bring your own sleeping bag). Others can camp on the grounds or sleep on their boats. Plan your arrival on Saturday for 4 to 6 PM (high tide will be 6:15 PM Saturday and 7 AM Sunday). Sailors may race to the island or come without racing. The route from BYSC can be the Beaufort River to Port Royal Sound, then up Station Creek (small sasilboats and motorboats), or out to buoy R14 and entering Trenchards Inlet (see special instructions). The route using Station Creek is 17 nautical miles (nm); going around to Trenchards Inlet is 28 nm. The racing will be Saturday, with a bottle of rum to the winners (sharing the contents with other participants is expected). Sunday, everyone may depart anytime. High tide is around 7 AM. Continental breakfast will be served after 8 AM. Registration: We need time to buy the groceries based on your commitment by Thursday, June 11. Whether you actually participate is your decision; if we don t hear from you on June 11 we will assume you are not coming. Racing Saturday: The PHRF (keel) boats are invited to race to Trenchard s Inlet on Saturday. We will use staggered starts, with the slowest boats (highest PHRF handicap) starting at 8 AM. The required rounding mark will be R14 for the BYSC fleet. The finish of the race will be due east of the entrance to Trenchard s Inlet. The entrance to the Inlet must be approached with caution, using motors, heading due west between the breakers and the marsh where the water is sufficiently deep. Look for detailed guidance, and use your GPS. Each skipper is responsible for his vessel, and extreme care is strongly suggested. Dinghy classes (MC, Laser, Sunfish) need to use Station Creek and allow about 4 hours assuming 8 MPH wind. Sunfish depart at noon; Lasers at 12:30; MCs at 1 PM.
