Theme: Margaritaville Commodore s Message Road Update - Early April will not see the start of our road repair and repaving project. I more or less stumbled on another much Commodore Caught Volunteering larger financially and technically stronger paving company who makes most of the asphalt in the Savannah market. While at slightly higher cost they are going to provide a much stronger, longer lasting road. We asked that they schedule our project in April or May before Summer Camp begins. I will let you know the exact dates ASAP. Watch for details in Jerry's weekly messages. The Flag Raising Ceremony, in its 27 year thanks to John Barber, was well attended and a good start to our Club season. The Club s calendar, both racing and social, is full. Summer Camp is filling up to the point another counselor is being considered. Several pool projects have been completed with several others literally in the pipeline for the summer. The pool is scheduled to open in April as soon as the weather warms up. Check out our new web sight thanks to Tauri Duer. Marvin Day Commodore *** May 4th CINCO DE MAYO Sunset Friday

9 RACING March is over and it was a busy month with a High School Regatta, Santa Elena Regatta and the Laser D-12 Regatta. Thanks to Chris Hoogenboom, John McIntosh, Chuck Rushing, Jim Thomas, Chris Duer, Wayne Bretsch, Mr. Chuck and a whole lot of Race Committee Volunteers for providing the leadership and support to make these regattas a success. All of the regattas were pretty well attended with 2 out of the 3- WINDY and COLD! April is on us now and the start of our Spring Series with warmer weather. Tauri Duer, Fleet Captain, is in charge of the Dinghy Spring Series starting Sunday April 8. All sailors will need to register online (a new program bringing us all into the techy world. Commodore Marvin Day will spearhead the PHRF Spring Series starting on Friday April 6. The other big event for the month is the Classic Boat Rally from BYSC to Savannah and back to Hilton Head and then to BYSC. This will start on Tuesday April 24 with finishes at BYSC on Friday April 27. Woody Norwood is our leader on this event, which includes boats from St. Louis, Barnegat Bay, Charleston and other exotic places (more info included in this Bow Watch). A Catboat Gathering (Regatta) will take place that weekend, April lead by Marvin Day. See more detailed information in this Bow Watch. 10 CLASSIC BOAT RALLY and CATBOAT GATHERING April 27th 29th The twelfth Annual Classic Boat Rally and the second annual Lowcountry Catboat Gathering are happening at BYSC in the last week of April. These events bring classic sailboats from distant places like Saint Louis, MO and New Jersey just to sail in our special waters. The scene will have more classic-designed yachts in the Beaufort River in over 100 years. You will want to come and see these boats. Many of the participating vessels will first gather at BYSC Tuesday morning, April 24, and sail south on an informal cruise to a rafting up anchorage 22 miles south of Beaufort on Bull Creek, just off Daufuskie Island near the south end of Calibogue Sound. A barbecue Fricken Chicken dinner will be catered to the anchorage by participant Andy Fishkind, of Bluffton and his author-spouse Ellen Malfrus. BYSC members are welcome to join at the anchorage at 5 PM, but dinner must be reserved in advance though Woody Norwood at snorwood3@me.com. The Classics will sail on to Savannah Yacht Club Wednesday and be treated to a buffet dinner that night at SYC. The following day, Thursday, the Classic fleet will race to South Carolina Yacht Club at Windmill Harbour, Hilton Head, where they will dine as a group at SCYC after entering the above-sea-level harbor through a lock. On Friday, April 27, the fleet of classics will race from Windmill Harbour to BYSC, arriving at BYSC probably (depending on wind conditions) at around 3 PM. If you can be there, please join in welcoming these adventurous sailors to Beaufort. Margaritas ($3 donation) will be available at the dock around 5 PM for the trophy presentations. Participants are invited to join the BYSC pot luck dinner at 6 PM The Lowcountry Catboat Gathering will start the following day, Saturday, April 28. The fleet of catboats, including the legendary ultra classic Silent Maid, will sail south to a point off Parris Island and finish at BYSC. Dinner follows. The racing will continue Sunday. With the finishing action concentrated around BYSC.

13 Laser District 12 Championship Report BYSC kicked off the Laser District 12 Championship season in March with 2 days of excellent sailing conditions and fantastic BYSC Race Committee work! The sailors enjoyed the traditional shrimp boil put on by the BYSC sailors and kicked off 6 races on Saturday. Saturday evening was a great dinner by our BYSC Laser sailors and Junior Sailing of Beaufort. Sunday we got in 5 more races in cold, rain and big breeze. Laser sailors are a hearty bunch and so are the Evo s that joined us for the weekend! Congratulations to the winners and good luck on the road at the next event in Savannah! 16 Spring Series 2018 Celebrate the beginning of spring by signing up to sail or volunteer in the Spring Series! The Dinghy Spring and Fall Series Regattas are at the core of the BYSC Racing Program with a good turnout of local sailors throughout the series. Though many of the participants are seasoned with serious skills, they go out of their way to welcome adult and junior newcomers and beginning sailors into the fold. A full Race Committee allows local sailors to gain weekly practice in an environment of friendly competition. The Spring Series runs for 6 consecutive Sundays and has a final race on Memorial Day. When: Consecutive Sundays from April 8 to May 13, first 2pm Monday, 5/28, Memorial Day, first 1pm Who: Dinghy Sailors Included classes: MC, Laser, Sunfish, 420, Opti, Bic, Evo, JY15 How: Register Online Here! All sailors, including skippers and crew must be registered. Please complete the registration online and bring your check to the club for payment. If you sail more than one type of boat as the weather conditions change, please fill out a separate registration form for each boat. Only one fee will apply. All skippers are expected to check in with the Race Committee when they head out on the water each day so the Race Committee knows who they have on the race course. Volunteer: Sign up Online Here! Our racing is dependent on our fabulous volunteers! We are looking for a number of positions for the race volunteers for the Spring Series.

17 Spirit of America Spirit of America is looking for volunteers! What is Spirit of America? Spirit of America is the premier youth boating education program. It has been operating in Beaufort for the past 5 years as the YMCA boating program, but it has recently been transferred over to Junior Sailing of Beaufort. The program is an innovative year round opportunity and STEM educational experience for middle school aged students, years of age, that combines a summer-camp atmosphere with classroom discipline. Each program participant is exposed to sail, power, paddle, personal watercraft, and large vessel disciplines, rules and practice. In addition, the students spend time in the classroom passing their state boating education course, in the controlled environment of a pool, and in natural settings to build up their confidence and competency. The program is offered at a very low cost and is supported by grants, sponsorships, volunteers, and donations. Tuition for the week long program is $50. Families who cannot afford that cost can apply for scholarships to further reduce the cost. The point of this program is to expose ALL children to safe boating and to grow their knowledge and confidence. What types of volunteers are we looking for? Boaters! Spirit of America volunteers teach the students about boating safely on kayaks, SUPs, canoes, power boats, sailboats, large vessels, and personal watercraft. Instruction is provided in the classroom, pool, and on the water. Sail, paddle, and power volunteers accompany the students and lead them through the waterways surrounding the Port Royal Maritime Center. What do volunteers do?

19 Junior Sailing of Beaufort Update Very exciting news, Beaufort Community Sailing and Boating (Junior Sailing of Beaufort) has taken over the nationally recognized Spirit of America program location in Beaufort. With over 20 locations across the country, this program came to Beaufort about 4 years ago and had been hosted by the YMCA and on-the-water activities took place at the Port Royal Sound Foundation. We plan to host this seasons sessions at the Port Royal Sound Foundation location and are looking for volunteers to help teach sailing, paddling and powerboat operation during one or more of the 4 planned sessions. April 9-14 (Spring Break Session) July 9-13 August More information can be found on our website at: With any questions or interest in assisting, please contact Chris or Tauri Duer or any other member of the Junior Sailing of Beaufort Board of Directors.

20 Adult Sailing Seminars at BYSC Here comes March and with this month comes Spring, nicer weather, and wind. We also are planning and looking forward to several races. Beaufort Community Sailing & Boating (JSB) would love to see more adults sailing this year. So much, we are articulating an Adult Sailing Program and looking for interested BYSC members and non-members alike. Right now the main focus is four day classes for introductory students. BCSB has a 27-foot S2 keelboat and it is the ideal platform to learn how to sail. In the past seminars, participants learned aboard the S2 with four students and one instructor. The instructor is fellow BYSC Member Scott Gordon. Scott is a US Sailing Level I Small Boat Instructor. He is also public-school educator with 20 years experience. His sailing experience includes racing and coastal cruising and 20 years experience teaching sailing. The cost for this seminar is $275 for Members and $325 for Non-Members. It includes 16 hours of instruction over four days. Twelve of those hours are on the water with four hours in the classroom and on the dock. In the past few weeks, Beaufort Community Sailing and Boating (Junior Sailing of Beaufort) has updated their webpage with a good deal of new information. One of the pages is devoted to the Adult Sailing Program. Check it out at this address: Take it a step further and sign up for a class! Currently, we need one more person for our May class. Hopefully that person will be you.
