October is a very important month in the life of BYSC. Our Annual Stockholders meeting will be held on October 18 at the club with a lot of important items to consider. Foremost is the election of new board members for three year terms beginning in January. There will be six very qualified candidates presented for four board positions and it will be the responsibility of the membership to make the choice of those who will lead over the next few years. This is your opportunity to select leadership that will best reflect what you want for this club in the coming years. Biographical information for each of the candidates will be provided ahead of time and there will be an opportunity to vote early by proxy if you so desire. There will also be information presented on the financial status of the club along with reports from each of our standing committees. Please plan to be there. The other important thing that has happened over the last month is the announcement that our General Manager, Bo Von Harten is resigning and will be leaving us in mid-october. Bo has done an excellent job in keeping BYSC running smoothly since he joined us in January He and Amber will be moving to Charleston and we wish them both the very best and hope they will come back to see us often. Bo will be joining us at the October 12th Sunset Friday, and possibly the October 18th Annual Meeting. We are very fortunate that David Dixon is available and willing to step in as our interim general manager until we can find a permanent replacement for Bo. David has indicated that he is willing to take this on for a few months and we have hired Renee Dillinger to help with the office administrative work. Please give both David and Renee your support and encouragement as we go through this change in club management. Our chairman, Tripp Presnell, has formed a committee to search for the new manager and we will keep you advised of that progress. If you have recommendations, please let Tripp or me know. I have enjoyed crewing for Alan Dechovitz on a big boat in the PHRF series. Sailing on anything is a lot of fun. The pictures this month are on a windsurfer, which is the smallest boat I ve ever sailed. That is a blast. Fall is here, this will be the last weekend to use the pool for the season. We still have some sailing going on in both the PHRF series and the one design fall series. And the tennis courts always seem to have a lot of activity. We will be hosting the JY 15 North American Championships the second weekend in November, so there is still much happening at your club. 2 BYSC is looking for someone to host the Christmas Party! Anyone interested in this please let us know! JUNIOR SAILING OF BEAUFORT Junior Sailing of Beaufort is hosting practices for students 8th grade-12th grade interested in high school sailing. Practices will be on Fridays at 3:30 pm & generally last until 5:30 pm. Practices are open to students from any school or home schooled. The student must join their respective school team to participate in ISSA sanctioned regattas. The Beaufort Academy advisor is Lisa Mazzeo. If any parent or teacher is interested in organizing a Beaufort High Team this year also contact Lisa. Sailors must wear closed toe shoes & bring a life jacket. This is a photograph of the 1963 Labor Day races taken from the Ribaut Road bluff looking back toward town. I count at least 43 Sunfish and Sailfish sailboats on the river. Note that this was before the Waterfront park was built and you can still see the box girders of the 1927 bridge that has not yet been removed. Also note that there are no boats moored in the river west of the marina. You will also see what a typical Beaufort dock looked. like in those days.

4 PHRF Race Results Sept 7th We had a total of nine boats come to the starting line for the first race of the Fall Series. Seven in class A and two in class B. Pretty good turnout for our first race. The feedback I got from most competitors was that they had a great time. The weather co-operated for sure with the breeze actually increasing through the evening! Congratulations to Christian Koppernaes for taking line honors in class A and to Reggie Fraser for his first win in class B. Kudos to Woody Norwood for sailing single handed. It is one thing cruising single handed but racing a bigger boat is another story. Chris Duer was forced to retire with a gooseneck breakage on his C&C 34. At the moment the weather looks great for this coming Friday. See you on the water. I will try find a white board to place at the end of the dock, with the course we will use Sept 14 th I believe we had the most boats start a PHRF race we have ever had. Eleven (big boats) showed up out of the total fourteen that have registered so far - again the most we have ever had! So the series goes from strength to strength. It was a shame the wind died on us just about start time, which meant the only three boats to finish were spinnaker boats the rest of the fleet was DNF. The fifteen minute start delay probably did not make that much difference in the end, but time is really of the essence on our Friday evening series. We do not have the luxury of being able to delay a start unless for weather or safety problems, because the wind can drop off so fast. Having said that, after about an hour and half of racing and boats having to anchor up to stop from going backwards! The actual finish was very exciting with line honors finally going to Dolce and crew by a whisker ahead of Loki, with Junior Sailing coming in third. We are almost a victim of our success, and because we discourage any official protests, the more boats we have racing the more there is a chance issues will arise. Our series is not much different to other classes of racing, in that rounding marks can be a bone of contention between competitors. We have a wide range of boats, and I suspect a wide range of racing experience. I would encourage any competitor who is not familiar with the Overlap rule to please look it up and take note. When we only had a handful of boats racing there was less chance of any problems, but now, with the potential of many boats closing on a mark at the same time, it is a distinct possibility the Overlap rule will need to be observed thanks for your cooperation! BYSC would like to begin a Kids Night Out for children ages Every two weeks, BYSC parents will be able to drop off and pick up their children between 5pm and 11pm at the Club. While your having a fun night out, running errands, etc, your kids will be in the good hands of Ms. Elise from Summer Camp. Cost is $15 for the first child, while siblings are an additional $10 each. 7 AUXILIARY COMMITTEE REPORT To the promote social enjoyment, fellowship, and the general welfare and beautification of the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club. The Auxiliary is gearing up to help organize two important upcoming events at BYSC. The annual Change of Watch party & prize-giving Oyster Roast is Saturday, November 10 th. Susan Cosby is coordinating the Auxiliary s help with this event and is looking for volunteers to help pull it all together. Contact her at sailsew8@gmail.com, or signup on the back porch. That same weekend, BYSC is hosting the JY15 North American Championships. Sailors from all over the country will arrive Friday night, November 10 th, and then compete over the next three days. The Auxiliary is making sure that all on-shore activities are taken care of, and we are looking for more volunteers to help with a variety of jobs, like a welcoming party, setting out breakfast spreads, making box lunches and a meal both Sunday night and Monday afternoon. Shortly there will be some new swinging benches along our shore for members to sit and enjoy the views thanks to Chuck Rushing s efforts. The Labor Day Picnic was a big success due to the hard work of Carey Kerney and her team of volunteers and Chip Dinkin s wonderful food. Thanks to all. September s Auxiliary Thai Food dinner was a delicious gourmet delight. My personal thanks to Sam Levine, Linda Williamson, Angie Williams, Martha Weeks, Erica Dickerson, Larry Hamilton, Andy Lyons, Kathy Wadley & Kristi Rushing for chopping and dicing and cooking and rolling their little fingers off to prepare this complex meal. (And thanks to Sheila Tindall for providing Dave s birthday cake for all to share!) Coming up this month are two new events! Wednesday, October 10 th will be STEAK NIGHT at BYSC. Limited tickets will be available and RSVP s are a must! See more details in this issue of the Bow Watch. Saturday, October 20 th will be a Tailgate Party at the club. Details coming soon. Our next meeting is Thursday, October 25th at 6pm at the clubhouse (this date is one week later than the usual 3 rd Thursday of the month due to the BYSC Annual Meeting scheduled for October 18 th ). Whether you are a new member or old, this is a great way to meet new friends and get involved in making your club the best ever. The meetings are always very social and fun in nature and everyone is welcome. See you there!
