JULY FOURTH CELEBRATION 5:00pm BRING YOUR OWN PICNIC AND ENJOY THE FIREWORKS1 Commodore s Message The Club's Lowcountry Regatta has become at least for me somewhat of a "Mystical Happening". Competitors, local and several states away, volunteers, mostly Club Members but a few friends of the Club including Sponsors make themselves available for two days, spectators as well. Why do we do this year after year? We like being with each other and just having a good time in the out of doors, except the A/C indoors feels pretty good too. Racing small sailboats, 85 this year is the main event. The food prepared by Junior Sailing of Beaufort's Junior Sailors, their parents and well wishers was outstanding...a Lowcountry Boil and lots of it. The Social Committee's efforts were at every event in what has become a festive/tasteful (food) tradition. Seeing the art work on LCR Regatta T Shirts, the Vice Commodore who is responsible for the event, choose the 2018 design. Another great shirt! Our Staff did their thing to great effect. The Racing Committee ran an expanded number of races, totally organized. The land crew organized and transported the competitor boats either to the crane at the end of our pier or to our water launch ramps, seemingly effortlessly. When the storm came Sunday afternoon they retrieved the fleet in no time. Almost Mystical! Marvin Day

2 Vice Commodore s Message The 52 nd Annual Lowcountry Regatta The 52 nd Annual Lowcountry Regatta held on June 23 rd & 24 th was a great success and a lot of fun. We had 85 competing sailors and as many or more volunteers to make the event possible. Several visiting sailors and family members commented on how well the event was run, how great our Club is, and how welcomed they felt. Some went on and on about it. They are right, we do have a great Club, because of our highly involved Membership and our spectacular setting. I would like to give a special thanks to: Frank Pontious and his Race Committee, including Pam Floyd s Registration Committee, for being the well-oiled machine that they were on and off the water. Marilyn Marino and her Social Committee for coming in early and leaving late to do all the food prep, breakfasts, bag lunches, and clean up. John & Cheryl Potter and the Jr. Sailing Volunteers for the excellent Dinner and Sunday Cookout. Sheila Tindall for procuring the LCR T Shirts. Congratulations to Judith Alling for winning the design competition. Chuck (Mr. Chuck) Stauffer and David Dixon s two grandsons (Lee Byrd and Spencer Tracy) on tractors, along with Luke McLaughlin. Jerry and Anne Giarla for keeping things moving in the background. Marvin & Nancy Day for their guidance and leadership. And to our generous Sponsors! So, in spite of a water-line break for a short period of time, gale force winds knocking over sail boats & tents, and missing sandwiches, it was an excellent event. I am proud of our Club, and I hope you are too. Sincerely, Will Achurch Chairman of the LCR

6 Race Committee Chairman s Message A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated in making the 2018 Lowcountry Regatta a super event. It was a great effort and one of the best LCR s we ve ever had. We certainly had the best winds that I have experienced in the LCR. We ended up with 85 boats on three courses, which is a decent number. Our staff was definitely on their game. Chuck (Mr. Chuck) Stauffer and David Dixon s two grandsons (Lee Byrd and Spencer Tracy) on tractors, along with Luke McLaughlin, kept the trailers moving, and General Manager Jerry Giarla was everywhere keeping things humming behind the scenes. They definitely were a big help. With almost 60 members helping to make this regatta a success it is difficult to acknowledge a few people and not specifically acknowledge everyone else. However, some people spent so much time and effort before and during the regatta it would be fair to give them a special shout out. Bruce Harmer for all his work on the developing the roster of volunteers-a daily job for al most three months. Doug Newton for taking over David Dixon s position of getting the facility ready during t he previous week. Luke McLaughlin and Commodore Marvin Day for spending a good portion of a week get ing ready. John Barber for repairing leaky marks, identifying which ones were to go where and getting all the equipment to the dock for distribution. Marge Barber for conducting Recorder Training and the developing written procedures. PRO s Jim Thomas, Chuck Rushing, Wayne Bretsch and John Barber. Junior organizers and consultants: Chris and Tauri Duer. Pam Floyd and her Registration team. And our scorer emeritus, Walt Gnann Everyone did an excellent job and we received numerous attaboy s from the competitor s as they were leaving. Special thanks needs to be given to the numerous safety boats that assisted the capsized sailors on Saturday afternoon south of the McTeer Bridge. The volunteer firefighters from Lady s Island Fire Department were on station with Scott Haupt and his boat ready to help anyone in need. This is the way it s supposed to work in storm situations and it did! Although fearing that I might leave someone out I still want to acknowledge three guys who spent considerable time in the water helping the rest of us: David Yoakum, David Zapp and Butch Mumma. There many have been others and I m sorry if I missed you and could not acknowledge your assistance but I did want to give a shout out to these guys. Another LCR is history. Plan for next year, June 22-23, Frank Pontious

13 Beaufort Community Sailing & Boating June was a huge month for Beaufort Community Sailing and Boating! Our annual Learn to Sail program kicked off with almost double the number of students as 2017 at over 110. From this LTS program we ve had an increased number of sailors move on to our racing team as well. Our Race Team has been sailing around the region and improving each week. In the beginning of June, we took 5 down to the South Carolina Yacht Club for the US Sailing Junior Olympic Sailing Festival. Arabella Duer finished 2 nd in Optimist Blue Fleet and Traianus Rota 6 th in Opti Blue Fleet. We took our largest group of Opti Green Fleeters to the Regatta with Lachlan Duer (2 nd ), Marshall Shook (5 th ) & Maggie Houlihan (6 th ). This was the first travel Regatta for our Green Fleeters and we couldn t be more proud of how they did! We finished June with the BYSC Lowcountry Regatta and had an excellent turnout! We had teams in almost every fleet and all of the sailors also helped to serve our awardwinning dinner at the Lowcountry Regatta on Saturday evening. Opti RWB by division: Arabella Duer 2 nd, Traianus Rota 6 th, Reese Myers 7 th Opti Green Lachlan Duer 1 st, Noah Dando 2 nd, Marshall Shook 3 rd O Pen Bic Ben Gambla 8 th, Everett Nason 10 th 420 Jacob Lawson 4 th Sunfish Thomas Gnann 5 th, Christopher Roberts 7 th

14 Beaufort Community Sailing & Boating We have several Regattas coming up in July at Hobcaw Yacht Club and Carolina Yacht Club-Charleston before a short break building up to the Opti Southeast Championship and the Midlands Regatta in Columbia. We also have our big SAYRA event we are hosting at BYSC in September, the Pluff Mud Championship. We hope everyone comes out to help with and cheer on our junior team in September! Finally, we have 2 more sessions of the Spirit of America program coming up in July and August. We are in dire need of volunteers to come out and help with teaching powerboating and paddling (SUP & kayak) skills. For more information, please see the website and contact us. We are now located at the BYSC, so it is easier than ever to come out and help educate the next generation of safe boaters in Beaufort! Thank you all again for your generous support of sailing, Beaufort Community Sailing & Boating, Board of Directors Please follow the link below to see June s BCSB Photo Album!

15 Adult Sailing Seminars at BYSC Summer is in full swing. We have already successfully taught three classes of adult sailors. If you are interested in joining their ranks and getting some hands-on experience, please visit our Signup Genius page here: Select some months that work for you. Get some of your friends to visit the page, too. As soon as four people select the same month, Junior Sailing of Beaufort s adult instructor will contact you to nail down dates. You can also check out our webpage for more information: All of the classes are taught aboard the S2, which is a 27-foot keelboat. In the past seminars, participants learned aboard the safe and stable S2 with four students and one instructor. The instructor is fellow BYSC Member Scott Gordon. Scott is a US Sailing Level I Small Boat Instructor. He is also an educator in the public schools with 20 years experience. His sailing experience includes racing small boats, keelboats, and coastal cruising. He has taught people sailing from ages 5-70 in the past 20 years. The cost for this seminar is $275 for BYSC Members and $325 for Non-Members. That includes 16 hours of instruction over four days. Twelve of those hours are on the water. Four of the hours are in the classroom and on the dock. A couple important points to consider for sailing in the summer months. Sailing is a sport. It involves physical activity in a low-impact and extremely fun kind of way! It is important to listen to and take care of your body while participating in sailing. Hydration and nutrition are two very important factors to consider while sailing. You have to drink more water when you are in the direct sun and sweating. The more attention you give to these factors, the more enjoyment you will get from your time on the water. See you on the river!

16 Spirit of America Spirit of America is looking for volunteers! What is Spirit of America? Spirit of America is the premier youth boating education program. It has been operating in Beaufort for the past 5 years as the YMCA boating program, but it has recently been transferred over to Beaufort Community Sailing & Boating (BCSB). The program is an innovative year round opportunity and STEM educational experience for middle school aged students, years of age, that combines a summer-camp atmosphere with classroom discipline. Each program participant is exposed to sail, power, paddle, personal watercraft, and large vessel disciplines, rules and practice. In addition, the students spend time in the classroom passing their state boating education course, in the controlled environment of a pool, and in natural settings to build up their confidence and competency. The program is offered at a very low cost and is supported by grants, sponsorships, volunteers, and donations. Tuition for the week long program is $50. Families who cannot afford that cost can apply for scholarships to further reduce the cost. The point of this program is to expose ALL children to safe boating and to grow their knowledge and confidence. What types of volunteers are we looking for? Boaters! Spirit of America volunteers teach the students about boating safely on kayaks, SUPs, canoes, power boats, sailboats, large vessels, and personal watercraft. Instruction is provided in the classroom, pool, and on the water. Sail, paddle, and power volunteers accompany the students and lead them through the waterways surrounding the Port Royal Maritime Center. What do volunteers do? Volunteers can do anything from accompanying students on power boats, teaching classes, checking students in, demonstrating paddling strokes, and teaching sailing, to exhibiting proper self-rescue techniques. Since each power boat and sailboat need an adult on board until the students receive their boating licenses, volunteers are particularly in demand for the on the water sessions. We are also in need of volunteers who are willing to setup and launch the equipment, retrieve the equipment, and maintain the building and equipment.
