Volume XXXIII Number 2 February Ahoy everyone. As you see we are changing things up a bit to help everyone put a name to a face, to help our new members get to know everyone and our old members get to know our new members. I would like to thank everyone for signing in and wearing your name badge. I would like to thank Patti for her help in what not to do when getting into a kayak at a dock. As safety is a big concern to me when we are doing a club events, whether we are sailing, cruising, kayaking or anything else. It always feels good when everyone returns safe and sound. We have a breakfast on the beach coming up and the club is providing everything free to members. If you would like to help, or can help, please contact Toni Elliott or Jane Sperry, they would appreciate the help. So let s untie the boats, load up the kayaks, or come to a social event. I would like to see everyone out having fun. See you out and about at an event soon. Bill Elliott Commodore
HUDSON BEACH YACHT CLUB Minutes of General Meeting held on February 5th, 2019 Page 1 Commodore Bill Elliott opened the meeting at 7:30 PM with the Pledge of Allegiance. He asked for a motion to accept the minutes from the January meeting. The minutes were accepted. Racing Bob Polk spoke of the first race that is scheduled for 9AM on February 23. We have a committee boat for it, but will need committee boats for future races. He advised us of some rule changes. If there are 3 or more multi hulls racing, then they will have a separate start from the mono hulls. The website has been updated with the racing schedule for this year. Cruising Les Emery told us about a day sail scheduled for February 10. So far 3 boats are signed up open to all. There is an overnight sail on February 17th and 18th to Dutchmen or 3 Rookers. If interested, contact Les. Kayaking Mike Lewis spoke about 16 members who braved the chilly morning temperatures to kayak at Crystal River. The river wasn t as crowded as it was last year and there were manatees everywhere. After a successful paddle everyone enjoyed a nice lunch at Charlie s Fish House. February 9th is the next kayak trip to Weeki Wachee with lunch at Bayport Inn. Social Toni Elliott spoke about the upcoming Valentine s Day dance on February 16 th. Dinner will be at 6PM and dancing from 7-10 with music by Angelo. There is a flyer posted on the website. Toni still has a few tickets left. She also spoke about the last breakfast on the beach which was attended by 24 members. Jane Sperry talked about the next breakfast on the beach which will be on Saturday, March 2 at 9AM at the South Pavilion. Jane stated that everything will be cooked there and there is no cost to anyone who wants to attend. Prep work will be done the day before at 11AM at Jane s house on 6530 Driftwood Drive, Hudson. Purser John Dering reported that we have a current balance of $5, dollars in our account. (Continued)
Minutes of General Meeting held on February 5th, 2019 Page 2 Finance Aggie LaVoie reported on all the yacht club items for sale. She displayed 2 shirts that are available for purchase with the yacht club logo and your name embroidered on the front for $ Publicity Jackie Kerschbaum reported that she sent the picture of all the new board members to the newspaper, but so far nothing has been published. Membership Don Himes spoke about anyone who needs a new name tag to please see him. Plastic ones with a magnetic strip are available for approximately $10.00 if anyone is interested. He also told us that next year he will offer the ability to have our photos next to our names in the directory. This will help us all to remember names and faces. For the current year we have 65 members which is up 3 from last year. Tomorrow he will be ing the membership directory to all those who requested it in the PDF format. Mike Nunes spoke about 2 upcoming races. The first one is May 15 th from Hudson to Tampa Bay and we need sailors and crews. The 2 nd race is the Key West race which is 42 hours of non-stop racing. If you are interested in either of these races contact Mike Nunes ASAP. Bill Elliott and Patti Woja gave a demonstration on how to get in and out of a kayak when it is tied to a dock. They gave a lot of helpful tips on kayak safely. Les Emery suggested carrying a space blanket in our kayaks to prevent hypothermia. They fold up small and can be kept in your pocket. The drawing for wearing your name badge was won by George Spiggle. He received a coozie to keep his beer cold! Sandy Young won the 50/50 drawing. John and Cheryl Dering donated tickets to see the Little River Band and those were won by Jennifer and Joe Linquist. Motion to adjourn by Guy Colson at 9:00PM. Submitted by Barbara Lewis, Yeoman
Fleet Captain Report February 2019 Thanks to the improving weather it appears that we may get a day sail in on February 10, going out in the afternoon and returning in that evening. On February 17 there will be a cruise to 3 Rooker returning the next day (February 18). Both cruises are sponsored by Don Himes. Please contact Don Himes or myself if you plan on cruising. Let s try and make this a great cruising season with many day sails and at least one multi day cruise a month. Check the HBYC calendar for updates. I will welcome any suggestions for day sails or cruises. Les Emery Fleet Captain Scuttlebutt Ahoy racers and sailors alike. Opportunity to be on the water is abound! It looks like HBYC will be entering at least 2 boats in the Bone Island Regatta. Captain Don Himes and Captain Guy Colson are looking for crew to either race or just sail. The boats must be in Tampa by May 15th. Contact me at for more details or go to boneislandregatta.com Mike Nunes Past Commodore REMINDER: At our March General meeting Don Himes will be giving a demonstration of the features on the website and use of PayPal. 5 Kayak Director s Report Weeki Wachee River Kayak Trip Saturday, February 9, 2019 Twenty five people launched onto the river at about 10 AM on a beautiful sunny day. The water was clear and you could see many fish. One of our paddlers saw a five dollar bill floating under the water and was able to recover it. We saw only a few manatees, some turtles and birds. There were also some snakes (water moccasins) swimming in the river and on the shore. We had a few members of our group who went for a swim, four unexpectedly. Nobody was injured except maybe their pride. We completed the 5.5 mile paddle at about 1:20 PM, packed up our kayaks and headed to the Bayport Inn for a good meal and conversations. Next paddle will be on the Little Manatee River on March 16 th. Details to follow. Mike

Hello HBYC Racers This year there will be 7 scheduled points races plus a Women At The Helm Race (no points) and a Hudson to Anclote Race with post race raft up (no points). In addition I have left room in the schedule to permit participation in the Gulf Harbors YC Spring and Fall Regattas. Our Season Opener is scheduled for February 23. Rules, handicaps and schedules are posted on the HBYC website. We will continue starts for both Multihull and Monohull classes. However, this year I will combine the starts for Monohull and Multihull if there are 2 or less Multihulls. We will also keep the modified PHRF handicaps established last year that provides a credit or penalty for sail material (type and age), a non-spinnaker offset allowance and a cruising equipment bulk allowance. This has proven to greatly equalize all of the boats that race at HBYC events. A description of these changes is posted on the HBYC web site. I will also continue to award a 1/4 (.25) bonus point for the winner of each race. For example, if there are 5 boats racing, the winner will receive 5.25 points, instead of 5 points. This helps to avoid ties in the Season Points total at the end of the season. Due to a lack of committee boats, I may have to designate a racer as the committee boat for races for which I can t get a committee boat. At this point I have a boat for the season opener. If necessary, I will call specific racers to serve as a committee boat starting with the biggest and fastest boats. I can accompany the crew and run the race or the racer can opt to run the race themselves as has been done in the past. After each race we will have an after-race gathering at a place to be announced for the racers, spectators, crews, committee boat crew, and spouse/partners of all participants. We did this last year and it was a lot of fun! This year I will: Use marks 1, 2, 6 or 7 as the starting mark so all starts will be to weather. Start Monohulls and Multihulls together if there are fewer than 2 Multihulls. If there are 3 or more Multihulls, Multihulls will start 5 minutes after the Monohull start. I will use a time on distance calculation for corrected time finishes. This will allow you to easily calculate how much corrected time you gain or lose against each of the other competitors. Racing your boat is one of the best ways to improve your sailing skills and to learn how to make your boat sail better and faster. Come on out and join us and have some fun! Our races are informal and fun and I would like to encourage everyone to come out and race with us. All members are welcome to crew. Bob Polk Race Director 2019

As an alternative, Custom Embroidery and Screen Printing, located in the Gulfview Mall in Port Richey, has our logo on file and can embroider just about any clothing item, whether they supply it or you do.
