1 APRIL VICTORIA BLVD. HAMPTON, VA TEL: (757) FAX: (757) WEBSITE: The Weekend AFTER Memorial Day OPENS Thursday Evening, May 30th Racing-Parties-Awards May 31st thru June 2nd Submitted by Lin McCarthy It s time to GET IN THE PICTURE! Southern Bay Race Week on-line registration is open at the YachtScoring SBRW site - click here Click there also for event documents, pictures, docking info, paper entry form, accommodations info, contact names and numbers and more. SBRW PHRF B fleet heads up wind Ninety-six (96) boats [of 102 entered] raced in SBRW HYC racers dominated the racing side of the SBRW event last year. Of the 11 fleets, 7 of the 1st Place Overall winners sported the HYC burgee: PHRF Spin-Jake Brodersen, Midnight Mistress; and J24 OD-Alan Bomar, Roundabout. And, there were even more HYC racers in the pictures of the award presentations throughout the regatta of the coveted, numerous, distinctive SBRW trophies. SBRW Super A Fleet winner (2018) Super A-Sledd Shelhorse, Meridian X; PHRF A1-Phil Briggs, Feather; PHRF A2-Eric Schwab, Dorothy Kate; PHRF B1-Ben Weeks & Michele Cochran, Rumble; PHRF C-Ben Cuker, Callinectes; PHRF Non- And, the SBRW picture is not complete without the motley crew of HYC volunteers who pull-beer, serve on the race committee, handle check-in, and Four buddies at work at SBRW help dock boats, park trailers and give how to use the lifts lessons. Part of the mystique of HYC southern hospitality is the way the volunteers, HYC membership, and staff (continued on page three) The Hampton Yacht Club Board of Directors cordially invites you and your spouse, or guest, to our Annual Flag Raising Ceremony Saturday, May 11, :00 to 8:00 p.m. No Children Please. Please observe appropriate dress for this occasion.

2 PAGE 2 MAINSHEET COMMODORE S LETTER TO THE MEMBERS The object of the Hampton Yacht Club is the promotion of opportunities for its membership to participate in all aspects of the sport of yachting and to associate with others of like interest. This would not be possible without our many volunteers. Sock Burning is behind us and April is the month where we begin to see the manifestation of hundreds of hours our volunteers spend taking care of the administrative details and planning required for all of our boating events. My special thanks in advance to all of our committees and volunteers. I wish there was space to mention you all by name. Again, thank you so much! Wednesday Night racing starts this Wednesday 3 April and CCV begins their Season with a Tune-Up day on Sunday, April 7 th followed by Spring Series Racing on April 14 th and 28 th! Building and Grounds Beautification: Thank you to all of our volunteers who have been working on the Garden Bed on Bridge Street. It is going to look wonderful. The positive visual impact the Garden Area will have when approaching the Club on Bridge Street will be amazing. I look forward to seeing the finished product. Changes to Friday Night Happy Hour: Friday Night Happy Hour will become more health conscious! Partially due to the recent outbreak of staphylococcus aureus infections in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast Poultry Houses, the cost of chicken wings has become such we will no longer be able to serve them complementary on Friday nights. Rich is working diligently to find a suitable vegetarian alternative. Beginning May 1 st, chicken wings will only be available on Friday night by purchase from the pub menu. We hope to bring back complementary Friday night chicken wings in Liquor Locker and Bring Your Own Bottle Policy: Due to increased cost outside of our control, liquor and wine costs exceed our actual sales. The best solution to remedy our loss in alcohol sales is to increase our sales volume. This will enable us to purchase at a higher volume and lower rate. In order to reduce our cost, I have asked the Board of Directors to approve discontinuing our policy of BYOB for liquor and wine. Beginning July 1 st Membership will no longer be allowed to BYOB. Liquor Locker refunds for the remainder of the year will be refunded in your September Statement. I have tasked our interior decorating committee with developing Re-Use Options for the spaces occupied by the Liquor Lockers. Presently, our plan is to sell the liquor lockers to membership with proceeds donated to the Junior Sailing Program. Note: The New policy will not impact beer sales. Credit Card and Cash Sales: I am very excited to announce HYC will no longer be accepting cash and credit cards for food, beverage and merchandise sales beginning June 1 st. This new policy will help HYC become more inclusive and more in keeping with the northern Yacht Clubs. All guest purchases will be conducted via a temporary membership card account or placed on the host member s account. HYC Parking: My personal thanks to the BOD for approving designated parking spaces for the HYC Flag Officers! Our Parking Lot Committee will begin to investigate the best places to locate the designated parking spaces so that they will be as close to the Club as possible. Look for the new parking signs mid- summer. Commodore s Dining Room: A dress code has been established for the newly refurbished Commodore s dining room. Ladies and gentlemen dining upstairs will now be required to wear either a coat and tie, cocktail attire, or any clothing displaying a yacht club burgee or a logo from Margaritaville. Swimming Pool Up-date: Due to increased request from our social and young membership, I have formed a committee to investigate the permitting, location and costs to construct a swimming pool. Initial research and architectural reviews have shown the most economical and environmentally friendly option is to install a Floating Pool off of the end of the North Hoist Dock and next to F Dock. The downside to this option is that we would have to vacate 2 to 3 of our fifty foot slips and move these boats to the F Dock T Head, presently reserved for visiting yachts. Another downside of this option is waiting list for 50 foot slips will become longer. I will keep you all posted on this new initiative. Happy April First (April Fools)! V/R David McConaughy

Come and Enjoy A Delightful Evening With All Of Your Friends (continued from page one) all nurture and foster it. Volunteers are known to have the secret combination to the boaters showers written in magic marker on the backs of their hands - easy to show quickly to any visiting crew in need. HYC has a reputation of friendliness that takes hold when the visitors step on the grounds and last throughout the regatta. And, the HYC staff is the hub of the wheel that turns to make the regatta visitors and HYC-ers feel at home and a solid part of the regatta bunch of racers, families and friends.
