HAMPTON YACHT CLUB 4707 VICTORIA BLVD. HAMPTON, VA TEL: (757) FAX: (757) WEBSITE: Summer Powerboat Cruise Submitted by Gloria Newby AUGUST 2016 From June 22 through July 6 a group of enthusiastic power boaters headed to North Carolina for two weeks of adventure! Nine boats participated although some arrived later (boat problems) and some left early (family and work commitments), but it was generally agreed, a great time was had by all. First stop for some was the Atlantic Yacht Basin where we enjoyed the hospitality of Tom and Jane Fowler who couldn t cruise with us but went to the Mediterranean instead. Next stop, coming and going was Coinjock, home of the homemade potato chips and 32-ounce prime rib. By June 24 th the whole group: Barefoot n, BeeCee, Elysium, Know Pressure, Luna Azul, My Girl, Prime Time, Tradition, and Yelena had gathered in Manteo. We took over the gazebo for an inaugural cocktail party. The next day was sunny and windless, so the trip across the Pamlico Sound to Ocracoke was beautiful. We spent three days exploring the island by foot, bicycle, golf cart, and dingy. We gathered every night at 5:30 for happy hour and discussion of the day s activities horseback riding on the beach, visiting the British Cemetery, the Ocracoke Lighthouse, and the Dave Williams House )first light keeper of Ocracoke), Howard s Pub [which we were sure was named after a distant relative of Dr. Bob] and shopping to name a few. A family of otters showed up one evening to entertain us. Our next destination was up the Neuse to New Bern. The city commissioned 300 handpainted bears to commemorate their 300th anniversary. Walking through town to see them was a joy, but there was also the Tryon Palace & Gardens, the drugstore were Pepsi Cola was invented, a fabulous hardware store, and Morgan s Pub. The weather was still gorgeous as we headed to Beaufort for two days. It has a great waterfront area with shops, restaurants, a place for olive oil tasting and wine tasting, and several ice cream stores. The wild horses on Carrot Island were visible, and there were several dingy rides over to the island for swimming. The streets are lined with beautiful old homes which made walking in town very interesting. (Continued on page four)

M AINSHEET P AGE 2 C OMMODORE S L ET TER TO THE M EMBERSHIP The year is now half over - hard to believe. It has been an eventful one, and July at HYC certainly did not disappoint. I have written many times about the hospitable spirit of our club and it continues to sparkle. Thanks to the efforts of Stephanie Sweeney, Rich Ash, our wonderful staff and the membership, the Royal Navy and British Army (I received a beer-enhanced explanation of why their navy is royal, but their army is not they seemed to be serious about it) have assured us that, in one of their boat commander s words, the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay will have even more special meaning to us from now on. I think he was referring in double entendre to the dust up between Comte de Grasse and Graves from awhile back, but I got his main meaning. Despite the storm they encountered and their misfortune, they had a blast at HYC. Our membership had a great deal to do with that. I wish I had a list of all the members who provided them with rides to local attractions and home-cooked meals; thank you all. I received a note from Phil and Pam Eastman, of Flowery Branch, Georgia, who thank all of us for making them feel as if this were our home club. They made it clear in their note that the members most responsible for this were Henry Hudgins, Dave and Suzanne Hamilton, Dave and Sherl Eberwine, and Clayton and Dorothy Jensen. Thanks to all of you. The junior program is going well. Thanks largely to efforts made by Doug Amthor, our race team is about triple the size of last year. Our annual junior program regatta was an enormous success thanks to the efforts of Gary Bodie, Tyler Moore, Arielle Darrow and many others. If you have not done so yet, I hope you can get out and enjoy the water soon. The summer will be over before we know it. See you around the club, Jamie Summer Clam Dig Saturday, August 13, 2016 If you have not participated in this fun event, now is the time. Participating boats leave the Club and arrive at the clamming area around low tide. After fun on the water, we return to the Club and enjoy a meal on the dock. The Club supplies beer, soft drinks and water. Please bring something to share. The dock party begins at 4 p.m.

PAGE 4 MAINSHEET HYC CUP UPDATE July 11, 2016 With three events in the books, the top nine boats in the HYC CUP Championship are: First Place 8 points Callinectes (Ben Cuker) Second Place 7 points Diablo (Greg & Carrie Cutter) Third Place 6 points Feather (Phil Briggs) Remedy (Will Roberts) Sitella (Brian Hill) Sixth Place 5 points Dorothy Kate (Eric Schwab) Rumble (Ben Weeks) Sea Star (Bump Eberwine) Voodoo 2 (Leroy Lissenden) The Masters Race was run July 30 (after deadline) and does not appear. However, complete, current standings for all 39 boats plus an explanation of how the CUP is scored are posted on the HYC website. There are two HYC CUP events in August: - The Plantation Light Race on August 20 - The Singlehand Race on August 28 (Continued from page one) We had a cool, cloudy, overcast trip to Oriental where we stayed at River Dunes. Magically, after everyone was tied up, the sun came out and it was a beautiful day for lounging around the pool. It is a private club so we arranged in advance to have dinner there. They presented us with a creative July 4th menu featuring RED snapper, WHITE wine and scallops over pasta, and BLEU cheese porterhouse steaks. The desserts were also patriotically selected including apple pie with cheddar cheese ice cream! The overcast skies returned the next day as we traveled to Belhaven and a nasty storm blew through after we tied up. It had cleared by 5:30 so we were able to have happy hour, then Emory Morgan treated us to authentic North Carolina barbecue from his hometown of Washington, NC. We had noticed a large tent on the grounds of River Forest Manor when we were tying up, and the dock master informed us there was a wedding reception that evening. The bride and groom arrived at the reception on the bow of a beautifully restored 1953 Trumpy. What a sight! We were all lined up on Know Pressure to greet them with applause, cheers and horns. On July 3 our weather luck ran out and our mettle as boaters was tested to the limit. We left early from Belhaven to cross the Albemarle Sound to Manteo, because the wind was suppose to pick up later in the day. Unfortunately the wind picked up early and we rocked across at knots and 3-5 foot seas. It was not fun. Small craft warnings were issued when we were halfway across, but there was nowhere to go but either forward or back. When we finally tied up in Manteo, the Dark & Stormys came out much sooner than 5:30 and tales of woe were shared. However we all made it safely and no boats sustained damage!! Fourth of July in Manteo is a great small town experience with hot dog stands, funnel cakes, the local church choir singing, and a hat contest and bicycle decorating contest. Bettyrene Pope and Gloria Newby decided to decorate bicycles and enter, but were somewhat embarrassed to be the only contestants over the age of 12. However we represented HYC proudly and the majority of our fellow boaters turned out to cheer us on! That evening Tim and Patty Worst hosted an extended happy hour where we all brought our favorite July 4th treat (corn, watermelon, wings, barbeque, etc.) as well as Jack Pope s birthday cake. We then stayed aboard Know Pressure to enjoy a jet-packed water-walking demonstration, and the magnificent fireworks.

AUGUST 2016 PAGE 5 Sailing Center News Summer is almost wrapping up, but that does not mean the sailing has to end! Adult Sailing is still running Team Racing on Thursdays and Women s Racing on two Fridays out of the month. If you are interested in joining us on HYC s club-owned Sonars, please me at Arielle@hamptonyc.com. You will certainly be glad you did! I still have two more Learn to Sail Classes for the month of August and September that are open, please let me know if you are interested in learning how to sail or race! Finally, do not let your broken boat, or lack of boat, stop you from going on the water. HYC s Sonars are available for recreational use from sunrise to sunset. I typically leave one to two Sonars in the water, so you do not have to worry about hoisting them in and out of the water. Please me if you are interested in going for a nice, enjoyable sail. Junior Summer Sailing is still going on! If you have not signed your child up for summer sailing classes, there is still time to do so! Don t miss out on a great opportunity to have your child learn how to sail with our very qualified instructors. HYC DOUBLE-HANDED RACE REPORT Submitted by Lin McCarthy The annual HYC Double-Handed Race was blessed with pleasant breezes and sunny skies. Nine boats were broken into two fleets and sailed a 4.5 nm course in the harbor. Race Officers Rich Wilcox and Catherine Ryan completed sign-ups in the Dockside Lounge the morning of the race (July 10), conducted the brief Skippers Meeting at high noon, and managed the racing on the water. Two husband and wife teams were winners of the two fleets. Greg and Carie Cutter won the PHRF fleet and Justin and Elizabeth Morris lead the Sonar fleet to the finish line. Beer, soft drinks and nibbies fueled the post-race gathering well into late afternoon. Complete race results are posted at the HYC website. FEATHER, BLACK WIDOW, CALLINECTES, and SEEKER win fleets in 2016 Moonlight Triangle Race. Reprinted from Southern Bay Racing News You Can Use # 798, Lin McCarthy editor. The consensus among racers in the Moonlight Triangle is that it was a nice night to race and the cool, southern Chesapeake Bay was pleasant place to be. The PHRF A and PHRF B fleets sailed at 21.7 nm course, while the PHRF C and PHRF Non-Spin fleets went 14.8 nm. Breezes were light-ish to moderate, (7 to 10 knots most of the way) and all of the boats finished before 10 p.m. Phil Briggs J36, Feather, chose to go to the beach and picked up valuable time in that current and corrected to first in the largest fleet. Ian Hill s Sitella was first to finish the longer course, but corrected to third place when all was said and done. In all, 22 boats started the race and all finished. RESULTS: PHRF A (11 boats): 1.Phil Briggs, Feather; 2.John Blais, Stardancer; 3.Ian Hill, Sitella. PHRF B (6 boats): 1.Ken Copeland [ w/ Gade and Girardin], Black Widow; 2.Ben Weeks & Michele Cochran, Rumble; 3.Bob Archer, Bad Habit. PHRF C (2 boats): 1.Ben Cuker, Callinectes; 2.Alan Bomar, roundabout. PHRF Non- Spin (3 boats): 1.Alan Johnson, Seeker; 2.Bob Howell, Pegasus; 3.John Wandling, Pisces. Principal Race Officer -Richard Payne; Official Scorer-John Ritter.

PAGE 8 MAINSHEET Submitted by Mary Greblunas This year s Summer Sailstice plan was to anchor in Willoughby Bay for a progressive dinner, but due to the weather we had to move it to Hampton Yacht Club (which is the home port for most of the boats). Flight Risk sailed over, we used the new gazebo for cocktails & appetizers, Elnath used the flag deck and Summer Wine borrowed a boat. Everyone started together with cocktail & appetizers and got their assignments for the rest of the dinner. Unless you are hosting, the captain was not with their first mate. We had delicious food & drinks along with great conversation.
