1 Celebrating 56 years: Celebrating years January/February 2000 July OGYC Launch Schedule 2005 May 28 Sept 11 Sundays 9:00 AM 9:00 PM Mondays through Thursdays 9:00 AM 9:00 PM Fridays & Saturdays 9:00 AM 11:00 PM Sept 12 Oct 9 Sundays 9:00 AM 7:00 PM Mondays through Thursdays 9:00 AM 7:00 PM Fridays 9:00 AM 8:00 PM Saturdays 9:00 AM 8:00 PM Columbus Day Monday, Oct 10 9:00 AM 7:00 PM Oct 11 Oct 31 Sundays 9:00 AM 6:00 PM Mondays through Fridays 9:00 AM 6:00 PM Saturdays 9:00 AM 6:00 PM Commodore s Report Ann Riley Commodore The season is in full swing at this point and the reports back on all the member activities are outstanding. Thanks to all of you who have helped make the events happen----cruises, races, Memorial Day Parade, and sundowners. We are changing the date of the Grill the Commodores sundowner due to an Invitational being hosted by Belle Haven YC that evening. Belle Haven scheduled their event after we had selected a date so we will wrap up the season on September 17 with the Grill the Commodores sundowner. For those of you who may have forgotten or actually didn t know, the combination to the front door is on our website in the Member section. Just put in the combination and turn the knob on the lock to the right and pull the door open. I have had several questions on Rendezvous and why there are only two this year---there are only two because the dates available when we were allowed to select them were not acceptable either because we had other activities scheduled or they were not Friday or Saturday nights. But, more importantly, you should understand the process for getting permits to have a function on one of the islands. Each year in January, a member of OGYC has to go to the Town Hall parking lot and sign in around midnight and then spend the night in their car in the parking lot to reserve a space in the line to get reservations for the islands and the clambake area. If you leave the parking lot for more than an hour, your name goes to the bottom of the list. We were number 8 or 9 this year when I arrived around midnight (pretty amazing.) At around 8 AM, the Town opens up the building and you can go in and sit in your assigned seat based on when you signed in the night before. This year, the process was slightly different than in past years- ---when your number was called, you could make only two reservations so I got the clambake area for the picnic and one of the island reservations. You then had to sit down and wait for all of the other people in line to get their two choices before you could go up for more reservations. On the second round, there was only one date that was acceptable for the islands which I took. I am sure (continued on next page )

Steve DeLuca Club Historian Joe Powers Club House Telephone/Voice Mail Commodore s Report (continued ) you are thinking, as I did after a night in the parking lot, that this is a very strange process----and indeed it is! But, the process is not likely to change since they have been doing this for years in Greenwich. So, what we need is for two or more of our members to volunteer next January to go to Town Hall around 9PM to get in line even earlier and then the next morning each one of them can get two reservations! A very important activity that all boat owners participate in each year is surveillance of the mooring field. Each boat owner is asked to spend one night on their boat at their mooring and periodically scan the mooring field after launch service has ended. Details of the surveillance program are included in this newsletter. Please check to see what dates you are assigned to do surveillance either on the label on your newsletter or on the list posted on the bulletin board near the clubhouse side door----if the assigned date is not a good date for you, please contact another member(s) on the surveillance list and switch dates. 5 Racing Corner Karen Thomas Race Committee Director Multi-club Racing Multi-club racing in Captain Harbor is proving to be one of the best things to happen to racing in Greenwich in some time. The Lasers are a cloud of white sails off Red Rock on Saturday afternoons and the joint IHYC-OGYC Wednesday racing has some RYC racers looking in envy. Wave Dancer and Borderline are keeping the bigger boats from IHYC on their toes and new faces from both clubs are justifying the change in format. The Friday night series has changed also, with a new name and logo, and elegant perpetual trophies in the works, one per division, to be kept at the winning club each season. Wave Dancer has taken the first step in bringing the Division II trophy home with her win at IHYC, with Stampede backing up the OGYC effort in third place. Belle Haven held her first Invitational Friday June 27, after this was submitted results are posted at the club. OGYC club racing is healthy also, with 11 boats crossing the start line for the third annual Russel K. Payea Round the Islands Chase Race. Conditions were varied, starting with knots and rough seas, dropping to almost nothing mid-race, and reviving to a nice little breeze for the finish. Top finishers were Eclipse in third, Christina in second, and Fin taking top honors. The Sixth Annual Club Championships fielded 4 boats, crowning past champion Dan Dobryn, with second place hotly contested by Aileen Hutchins with team Scott and Amy Hutchins, Bill and Sarah King, and Tom O Connell, with Team Aileen taking second place honors. The Mercury members have been getting 4 boats on their start line, and with the launching of an additional 3 boats the day of the club championships, more are expected. Experience racing is not required Mercury members pair up with crew at the club at 1:00 before going out for their 2:00 start. Not made it out yet? You haven t missed the boat, many big events remain: July 8 RYC hosts her Friday Night Invitational and has threatened to add music and dancing to the after-race party there. July 13 The Osbourne All Hands on Helm is piggy-backed to the Wednesday racing get those talented crew on the wheel (also those crew who think all you do back there is sit )! July 22 OGYC Friday Night Invitational race and Party of Parties! Paul Brindak s 10 Year s After Band will rock the beach after an outstandingly committee d race. Everyone is invited to the party, racing or not. This is one of the biggest events OGYC hosts don t miss it. Anyone who wants to help light the club for the event should contact Tom O Connell and/or come down to the club Thursday July 21 or during the afternoon Friday. August 13 Father Neptune returns to OGYC contact Bob Russell to help and participate. September 10 The final on-the-water race event of the OGYC season the USS America Trophy Race, the Ray Westcott Memorial One Design Trophy Race, the Stanley Birdsey Cup Mercury Race, and the Family Picnic everybody races, everybody wins trophies and door prizes at the clambake area picnic after the racing. See you on the water! Greenwich Cove Surveillance Overnight Surveillance Duty will consist of staying on-board a boat in the mooring area, or staying in the Clubhouse, and making periodic checks of the mooring field after the launch service has ended, and throughout the night. These periodic checks are designed to discourage trespassing and tampering with the Club boats. Those serving on duty will be asked to sign-in to the Surveillance Duty Log, indicating date and time of arrival at the Club. Volunteers intending to overnight on a boat in the harbor should plan to arrive one hour prior to end of launch service, so as to allow sufficient time to meet with the Launch Operator on duty, and to transport any supplies out to the boat. The Launch Operator will provide information as to any unusual conditions in the harbor, and any special events that are known. A Town dinghy may be used to transport volunteers, mindful of the request to have it back at dock-side, well prior to the beginning of launch operations the next morning. The Club will provide a powerful boating-type flashlight/searchlight, sufficient to throw a beam several hundred feet. During the night, periodic surveys of the harbor should be made with the light, so as to create a presence to deter intruders. In addition, volunteers should equip themselves with a Cell-Phone or a Marine VHF radio. Should intruders be detected, members on surveillance should contact authorities (either by Cell-Phone or Marine VHF radio on Channel 16) and convey the appropriate information, including: location, number, activity, boat or vehicle. If during that scan of the mooring field any unusual or suspicious activity is noticed (such as apparent theft or vandalism) then a call should be made to the Greenwich Police and/or Coast Guard. Responsibility is strictly limited to observation and reporting. Under no circumstances should any attempt to intervene, intercept or otherwise involve the Member beyond radio or telephone communication to the proper authorities. Any activity involving a call to 911 or marine authorities should be brought to the attention of the morning Launch Operator or communicated to the Vice Commodore if the Member leaves OGYC before 8:30 AM. 5

6 Cruising Corner Paul Gudelis Director of Cruising The OGYC cruising season had an excellent start with the annual Memorial Day weekend cruise to New York. The stout vessels Celeritas, BuBu Too, Avalon, Even Keel and Traces set out from Greenwich Cove to explore the waters of City Island, Sheepshead Bay and Atlantic Highlands in New Jersey. Except for a brief squall encountered in Sheepshead Bay, the weather, sailing and camaraderie were great! Thanks to John Craine for organizing and leading our little flotilla. Additional pictures of the trip can be found at: Don't forget our next cruise, a raft-up, in Oyster Bay July Please let us know if you are interested in participating by dropping an to pgudelis@msp-llc.com or calling Memorial Day Parade 6
