Splinters from the Board by Rick Bernstein August's Meeting was held on the 24th at Rick Bernstein's office. Excused where Director's Pinkle and Clark. The minutes of the last meeting were approved. It was reported that the just completed Board of Directors election produced one of the largest turnouts in recent memory. Congratulations and welcome to Andrea Sepanski. The downside of this election was, over 30 ballots had to be trashed due to errors in the delivered ballots. Director Leimbach introduced a new ballot mailing/processing procedure that was approved by the board and will be implemented next year. Commodore Haglin introduced an idea to have fleet members, who volunteer for Sunday race duty, be allowed to count those days towards their qualifying numbers. The suggestion was approved and Haglin will work at introducing the idea to Fleet Captains. The Board welcomed the Title Sponsorship from CSA member Marcus Raichle for the 2005 Whale of a Sail. There was discussion on how we are running and organizing the regatta and the consensus was that sponsorships are the acceptable wave of today and tomorrow. The Board is entering into conversations with members who would like to take over the vacated position of Corporate Treasure, once held by Larry Rothman. It was reported that the Club House elevator has been fixed. The key to use it will now remain with the Harbor Master. Parents are asked to please keep children from playing in and around the elevator. Director Bernstein performed a review of our docks and determined they are in need of significant attention. The dock issue was given priority and a work party will be organized immediately by Haglin and Docks Chairman Wilson. Director Leimbach presented plans for the proposed Lifting Pole/Light Duty Crane that will assist members with raising and lowering their masts. Board members discussed certain items regarding the design and offered suggestions and changes. The crane will be placed at the end of one of the islands near the drive between the car and boat parking lots. Pending approval by the Park Superintendent, the crane should be ready for closing weekend in October. Director Beier proposed somehow separating the Junior Sailing funds from the Operations Budget. Over the years, there has been at times, difficulty in keeping accounting records straight. Beier was given approval to come up with a proposal to make this change occur. Vice Commodore Haile will begin organizing a committee aimed at reviewing CSA's current Rule Book, as it is schedule for updating for the 2006/2007 seasons. Director Leimbach put in a formal request for CSA to host the F18 National Championship in September of The request was approved. The next meeting is scheduled for September 27th at Director Bernstein's office. 2

Dornin Cup Lightning Fleet is Officially Challenged The Catamaran fleet has officially announced a challenge for the coveted CSA Dornin Cup. The Lighting fleet has defended the cup for 10 years against stiff competition and through several campaigns. The fierce competitors within CSA's nationally recognized Catamaran fleet have launched a campaign to wrest the treasured cup from the tight grasp of highly skilled Lightnings. Full details are yet to be announced but a date of October 8th has been approved and accepted by the governing bodies and membership of both fleets. The cup is a long standing tradition within CSA and is held by the victorious fleet of an intense competition. Both fleets compete in a total of 6 races sailing against each other in 3 races in each boat - in this case, 3 in hobie 17s and 3 in lightnings. Any fleet can challenge the fleet currently staking claim to both the Cup and the bragging rights through contacting the Cup trustee, currently Dave Leimbach. Keep watching this section for updates and breaking news on this exiting and prestigious event! The cup history, traditions and rules are forthcoming. TOP TEN REASONS THE DORNIN CUP IS BETTER THAN THE AMERICAS CUP 10. It can be Your Race 9. Challenges can be funded without corporate sponsorship for usually less than $10Gs 8. It's sailed in your own backyard 7. Any fleet can challenge 6. You don't have to find Malmo or be able to translate - Alla vindar bär till Malmö och Skåne! 5. Water temperature is above 40 degrees and you're no where near the Arctic Circle 4. It's simple, 1 Cup, 1 Club, 6 races, 1 winner, 1 loser. 3. Bar-B-Q and festivities for all members 2. All the names are easy to pronounce And Number 1 reason the Dornin Cup is better than the Americas Cup YOU CAN ACTUALLY WIN THE DORNIN CUP!!!!! Rules Quiz See Page 9 for the answers. SW is sailing upwind about 50 yards from the weather mark on starboard tack, but is below the lay line, and will have to tack twice more to round. SL has already rounded and is sailing downwind on starboard tack toward SW and setting her spinnaker. If both boats hold their courses, SL will pass down the windward side of SW, clearing by ½ boat length. As they approach SW luffs forcing SL to alter her course abruptly, and causing her to foul her spinnaker while hoisting it. SL hails, "protest", and SW hails back that she has right-of-way, and can maneuver to delay the progress of SL. Who is right? 3

Cabin Fever Is it legal to have as much fun as our fleet had in August? Despite several hot Sundays with little or no wind, we managed to pull of a few memorable racing and social events. After winning the Hare and Hounds race on the 6th, Wayne and Julie scurried around CSA setting up for the Jimmy Buffett party. Julie was concerned that our turnout would be lower since it was not held on the night of the "dam fireworks". Instead, we had a great crowd without having to rope off the area from spectators. Mr. PVC's pirate friends showed up again and this time they were armed! Yes, Don Missey's marshmallow shooters turned everyone into ten-year-olds for the evening and Rich learned never again to dock near the seawall during a dockside party! Thanks to Dave Waugh's movie, we'll be able to experience the adventure again and again! It's been a slow month for racing sailors with a number of races cancelled due to no wind. The CYC Summer series included only six races! The Fall series is now underway as participants look forward to cooler days and heavier winds. CYC's Moonlight Regatta was held on August 20th. The lake was as smooth as glass when the race began and we all started bobbing along. I was a little irritated with the weather and insects as I stood leaning on the boom trying to catch some air. While checking out the bird droppings on deck, I started thinking "We drove all the way here just to drift around all night!" When I looked up to check out the competition, I saw a gorgeous sunset in the distance and lighted sailboats reflecting in the water all around me. Friends and rivals were exchanging wise cracks, singing and even barbequing. I realized that I wouldn't want to be anywhere else at that moment. That's the magic of sailing at Carlyle Lake even in less than ideal conditions. It is still a world away from the work week! To top it off, the winning crew of the Lightning North Americans, Dan and Tobi Moriarty, served Bloody Marys and Mimosas at breakfast the next morning! The Shadyside Cocktail Party on August 27th falls between the Marks deadline and its release date. You'll just have to wait to read about it! Please remember to check your periodically for updates about fleet events! I did not mention Missey's swim party in the August Marks because I learned about it after the deadline for articles! Sorry Don and Nita! Attention all novice and veteran racers: The Strawberry Daiquiri Women's Regatta, Whale of a Sail, a CYC race and two Hare and Hounds races make September the perfect month to get lots of experience/practice. Hope to see all of you out on the water! Ann Lacker 4

Flying Scottlebutt by Leslie Bilodeau We didn't get as many races in as we'd like this month, but we sure had fun! All fun aside, I got a call from Joe Gerrity, who asked me to emphasize the importance of wearing bright yellow life jackets. Remember everybody, safety first. Thanks, Joe! I'd also like to thank Jack Lee for his fine homeopathic remedy for knee pain. The recipe includes soaking white raisins in gin and taking up to nine per day as needed for knee pain. Shirley said it helped her, and she didn't seem to be feeling any pain! Please join me in congratulating the Moores and the Swans. We joined Pat & Delores Swan in their celebration of 40 years of marriage while we were all in Ephraim for the district competition. Paul and Betty Moore just celebrated 50 years. In celebration, Betty rounded up her herd and rustled 'em off to a dude ranch in Colorado. We understand it was an experience they'll never forget. Is that where Dr. Dashing learned to tie a cherry stem in a knot with his tongue? Jim and Betty traveled to Toronto this month. Was Jim trying to dodge the draft? Jim, we meant boat draft! There's something fishy going on with these two. The last time I saw Betty she had a screw loose. She was walking up the boat parking lot with a nut in her hand. I wonder did she try that knee pain remedy? Many of us traveled to Ephraim this month for the Midwest district nationals. I was shocked by the facilities and awed by the scenery. There were over 50 Scots in the harbor for the regatta. Congrats to the teams headed by Sullivan, Pinkel and Vogler. As usual, they made us proud. I'm also proud to boast that the talented Jane Sepanski is having some of her quilting/art (and her quilts are indeed works of art) displayed this month. Please speak to Jane about the specifics of the exhibit. Congratulations, Jane! Congratulations are also in order for the Kaufmann's. They finally got their bottom wet! I think they should name their boat Elvis - it finally left the building (well, parking lot). Mary sure did rope me in on her first day out. Her performance was so fine she took a bow (bowline, actually! hehe). Ask them what I'm talking about. I do have one question for them, though. Which one of you is the skipper? Pat wasn't only the captain when he gave me a wet-gy, he was the crew. too! We anchored Scot Free out one Sunday when the wind died down. Instead of taking down the sails, we put her in park position. When the wind came back up, Pat decided to get in and pull the anchor forgetting one thing - me. As the wind grabbed the sails, the boat took off. I was holding the rope on the back of the boat as Pat sailed away. Instead of Scot Free we could've called her Scot Ski. It was fun for Pat, but a drag for me! (hehe). Thanks to all of you for making August Sundays so enjoyable. Sea you! 5

Cat Tales by Joe Kasperek As far as Club Racing was concerned, the month of August was hardly worth a mention, except for the first Sunday and even then we only got one race in (barely). The lawn mowers got a good work out; there was plenty of socializing, kayaking and our harbor bobbing skills improved. Other than that it was hot and windless. However, it is my understanding that Saturdays were fruitful, for the most part. I found just a bit more wind than I really cared for on a weekday excursion to CSA, a present to myself for my birthday (just my luck). I was hoping for a leisurely day sail. Oh well, that aside, those who traveled during the month found some good times Formula 18 North Americans: It must have been a site to see as Tom & Daniel Paoli and Mike Hill & Holley Conklin headed for Hampton Beach, Virginia for the F18-NA's in early August. Tom provided the tow vehicle and what could be considered an unconventional towing arrangement as they hooked their trailers in tandem for the trip east (don't even think about backing that rig). Mike and Holley took 13th place, while Tom and Daniel scored a 16th in a field of 38 competitors. I heard some talk on the Cat Field about hosting the 2006 F18-NA's at CSA. Bring'em on!!! Broken Mast: Using a more conventional method of hauling Cats to a regatta, Kitsy Amrhein, Karen Pauls and Latham Souther double stacked their boats and made the trek south to Lake Arkabutla. Latham told me that the turn out was light with six or seven H17's, four H16's and one H18. There was wind on Saturday and nothing on Sunday (nice to know we aren't the only ones suffering a wind deficit). Kitsy, with Karen as crew, took line honors in the H16 class and Latham managed a 4th on his H17. Our good friends, Mike and Marsha Lodes seem to be content in being fierce rivals on the race course as Mike took the top spot in the H17 division with Marsha coming in 2nd. Mike and Marsha will join us for the Muddy Waters and we may see one other from down south. As an aside, the cost of traveling is definitely going up! Latham said they spent $170 for gas. Conspicuous by His Absence: Jim Holmes showed up on the third Sunday of August (with a pretty lady at his side). Haven't seen him since the Luau and it seems he has a busy schedule as he's taken on some new, or, extra duties at work. He and his date drifted out of the harbor on his H18 for a swim (Ya! O.K.!). Miscellaneous Ramblings: Now that she's solved the problem about her rudders kicking up properly, will Shirley Allen finally install those new High Tech rudders she's had all season? Or will they remain on her mantle posing as a work of art? 6

Lightning Flashback by Rick Bernstein It was a glorious and unforgettable scene, the end of race 5 at this year's Lightning North American Championships in Sheboygan Wisconsin a few weeks ago. My boat finished 4th just ahead of the arriving 7th place finishing boat, so I had a front row seat to what was about to transpire. To his and his crews surprise, the 6 boats that finished ahead of them all waited around the finish and when they crossed the line, the North American Championship was soundly and succinctly won and in the hands of CSA Skipper Matt Burridge, along with teammates Dan and Tobi Moriarty. All the boats in the area whooped and hollered and yelled and screamed as they congratulating this team that truly dominated this regatta like few had seen before. I for one, knowing this team for most of my life, had trouble holding back the pride, it was really, really great to experience their domination and be there for the celebrations that followed. The NA's were sailed in a variety of conditions, from lumpy and light, to lumpy and on the edge of heavy, to race ending fog and big shifts. Sixty-six boats competed, and this included many World and NA Champions that had no power to stop the Burridge team; they were just too dialed in. Check out these scores: 1, 1, 2, 2, and 7, winning the regatta by an astounding 21 points. The irony of this event was that in 1976, Matt drove his first NA's in Sheboygan Wisconsin as a young teen, with his dad crewing for him and local sailor Paul Muckerman. At that regatta, they capsized in the first qualifying race, sustained race ending damage to the boat, and soon learned that their entire regatta was over because the boat simply could not be repaired. Since then, Matt has returned many times to Sheboygan, racing in local Lightning regattas, with great success. This my friends, is a classic story of "never say die." This was Matt's 18th try at the NA's, and now, forevermore, they will be known as Lightning North American Champions of In other NA news, how incredible would it have been to have CSA members on the first two final finishing boats? We almost had it, if only my boat would have finished top 10 in the last race. We made the classic mistake of leaving a 10- degree lift in favor of, what was thought of, as the other favored side. Wasn't to be and ended up 6th overall, sailing with Brian Hayes of Connecticut. The other CSA boat in the event was skippered by CSA's junior sailor Ian Schillebeeckx. His boat, racing in the President's Cup series, finished 6th overall, and won the award as the highest placing Junior boat in the entire regatta. These guys also finished 5th in the Junior North American Championships, qualifying them for the Junior World Championships in Helsinki Finland next year. Also racing in the juniors was CSA's own Nick Beckmann, Skipper, along with Edd Burke and Ian Moriarty. They finished 9th, and ended the regatta with strong finishes the last day including leading many races. All in all, a very strong performance by every CSA boat in attendance, with all top 10 finishes. Congratulations Lightning sailors, especially the Burridge team for bringing this now second North American Lightning Championship to CSA. Lastly, the CSA Lightning Fleet is gearing up and looking forward to the upcoming October 8th Dornin Cup Challenge made by the Catamaran fleets. Apparently there's some trash talking starting taking place towards the Lightning Fleet. All we have to say is, hope you guys have read about who you're challenging. If not, read above. Congratulations!!! Matt Burridge, Tobi and Dan Moriarty for an AWESOME VICTORY in the Lightning North Americans. 7
