Commodore s Corner by Preston Haglin Jr. Commodore Having just returned from Y-Flyer Nationals at the Privateer Yacht Club in Chattanooga, I thought I would share a few thoughts and observations. We had fifty boats this year and light winds, but we managed to get 4 races in. The Club itself was lovely with a great view of the Tennessee River on which we raced. The sailors who attended were an interesting and diverse group representing many clubs from all over the country, not a jerk in the crowd. We competed fiercely in very hot, slow, current impacted conditions and honestly, tempers did flair on occasion. But, at the end of each day we cleaned up and headed back to the club house to laugh, tell stories and enjoy the camaraderie that is sailing. I am absolutely convinced that diversity, whether in the Y-Flyer class or at CSA adds greatly to the fun of sailing. Wendy and I listened to stories, shared experiences and laughed 'till we cried with people that we probably would never have met or socialized with were it not for this common bond that is sailing. It is amazing to me that we can endure hot, cold, wind, no wind and rain, go out on the course and try to beat each other racing and still at the end of the day, put it all behind us and enjoy each others company. One of the many things I love about going to regattas is checking out the host club and comparing it to the wonderful facility we have at CSA. Wendy and I try to attend at least five out of town regattas a year and while each host club has it's own unique attraction, no one yacht club has the combination of lake and facilities that CSA has. Without a doubt we have one of the best lakes in the country for sailing and very little problem with power boats. We have a beautiful club house, great bathroom facilities, 3 hoists and a double ramp, flat ground and plentiful parking. When visitors carry on about our beautiful club, they're right, it is the best in the Midwest. Traveling and Nationals was a lot of fun, but it's great to be back, because whatever our flaws, there's no place like CSA. Rules Quiz See Page 8 for the answers. Yacht P, on port tack, is sailing toward Yacht S who is on starboard tack. At about 5 boat length from beginning to cross, P decides that she can cross, and continues her course. A few seconds later S, who has not been sailing as close to the wind as she can, begins to head up gradually, and continues to do so as P is crossing her course, thus making it impossible for P to successfully complete the crossing. Has either boat broken a rule? On another subject, writers of sailing instructions should note that discarding a yacht's worst score is the default in Rule A2 of Appendix A as of the 2005 Rulebook. If no discard is to be used the sailing instructions must modify Rule A2 to so state. 2

Nominees for the Board With the start of the Marks being on the Internet this year, there is a change in the method of voting for the Board of Directors. Season Space Renters with be mailed a ballot with voting instructions. The ballot is to be returned to Dan Claggett post marked by July 15, Andrea Sepanski Brock Tuffi Hello CSA Members, My name is Andrea Sepanski and I would ask for your vote in bringing my 30 plus years of CSA involvement to our Board of Directors. Since 1974, I have been associated with CSA in many forms. From running our club's first Junior Sailing Camps in the late 80's and early 90's, to serving as your Commodore in 2000, I have been involved in many facets of the wonderful growth of CSA. Aside from the activities associated with CSA, I been an active racer and have traveled the country participating in events ranging from local to national competitions. I believe I would be a valuable asset to CSA Board of Directors for a number of reasons. First, I know all the board members and believe I can have a good working relationship with them all. Secondly, from my years of being a Flag Officer and Snipe Fleet Captain, I already know how the processes work at CSA. Third, I am 40 years young now; I have experiences, knowledge and ideas to bring to a board that could use these traits and my youth and enthusiasm. Finally, CSA has been a great part of my life, and I want to help it grow, be stronger and continue its path as a premier sailing facility. I would like to ask for your vote, as I promise to be an active participant on the Board, and be proactive in whatever necessary change are needed and required for CSA to continue move forward. My wife, Nancy, and I have been members of CSA since We live in St. Louis and enjoy sailing and belonging to CSA. In fact, our first encounter at CSA happened on a windy day when we were having rigging issues with our catamaran. At that time, we sailed from South Shores State Park. We were in the middle of the lake with a sidestay that was breaking and rough shore all around. Looking for a soft landing, we pinched to get into CSA's harbor before we lost our mast! It happened to be a Sunday between races so the beach was full of catamarans. Many folks walked up to greet us and to see if there was anything wrong. I still remember the friendly faces and the willingness to help. The cat fleet helped us get our car and trailer from South Shores State Park, take our mast down without incident and then, to our surprise, asked if we wanted to sail with them on their boats for the rest of the day. We also received the grand tour and Nancy and I were hooked. It looked like a great club with many nice members and great facilities. We joined that year and have been members ever since. I have participated in just about every visitors day since joining giving rides to all who want one (in hopes of supporting the sport of sailing and the great club). I have been the catamaran fleet captain and I have served as the fleet treasurer for 4 years. I also served as the treasurer for the Hobie Cat 17 & 18 Continentals held in We take many sailing vacations with our friends and I have served as crew on the "Around the Island" long distance race in Pensacola, FL for several years. Last year, Nancy and I purchased a cabin boat and have enjoyed meeting many new friends in this fleet. My hope is that if elected to the CSA Board of Directors, I will work to continue to make this a great sailing/racing club for all. I also serve as a volunteer on the Purina Credit Union Board of Directors as the Secretary Treasurer and work for Nestle Purina PetCare in Sales Finance. 3

Cabin Fever Thank you to the Tierneys and Schweppes for providing a fabulous Bloody Mary Breakfast on June 26th. A few renamed this event a "brunch" instead since there was clearly no need to eat again until dinner. Rich Pendl's mast replacement procedure provided the afternoon's entertainment for a handful of guys who stood in the shade offering suggestions and support. For the past two months we've been blessed with favorable winds almost around the clock. I've heard several stories about beautiful moonlight sailing adventures. This last weekend in June was the first scorching drifter of the season. So far, so good! A number of cabin boaters experienced some wild rides during this year's Leukemia Cup Regatta. Thanks to all who helped to provide breakfast for the regatta's participants. Way back in 1963 Jack and Maryanna Coad dropped by Valley Sailing Association and asked Bob and Nancy Lischer for a ride in their Rhodes Bantam. Forty two years later Coad finished about ten seconds behind Lischer in CSA's first Hare and Hounds race. Because starts times are assigned according to PHRF handicap numbers, participants sailing different types of boats can race "boat for boat" on the course. This provides a unique opportunity for sailors who are usually uncertain of race results until they have been calculated. Please consider joining this fun racing program!!!! Contact Chuck Alyea for more information. A number of guests at CSA's Visitor's Day requested cabin boat rides. Wayne and Julie Lentz had the only boat available that day. After racing through heavy rain and wind a few fleet members volunteered to provide rides. Thanks to all who stepped up to the plate in order to accommodate our guests to CSA! Due to a serious lack of wind on June 25th, the CYC Commodore's Cup race has been rescheduled for July 9th. Registration remains open until the morning of the race. For further information, visit the CYC website. Randy Monaghan and Judy Laughlin painted great signage on the islands by the courtesy dock and launch ramp. Speaking of signage Please respect the "5 Minute Limit" requests posted at the ramp and courtesy dock. First, get your trailer in line at the launch ramp. Then bring your boat to the courtesy dock only after your trailer is in place. If your trailer is second in line, you may wait with your boat at the very end of the courtesy dock. Please secure your boat to another dock until your trailer has been retrieved. Do not dock at the courtesy dock when first entering the harbor. Others who are not visible to you may be in the process of retrieving their trailers. Long-time snipe sailors Howard and Cheryl Harris have joined the fleet as proud owners of Linda Cherry's infamous San Juan. Their son Ted is a Junior Sail Camp instructor. Welcome! Those little boats buzzing around the harbor on Sundays are Optimists skippered by our youngest Junior Sailors. Please be patient, and steer clear of them. A cabin boat resembles the Titanic to a fifty pound child sitting in an Opti. Consider getting your children and grandchildren involved in CSA's junior sailing activities. Bob and I love driving home from the lake on Sunday afternoons listening to our three children in the back seat of the car sharing sailing adventures and showing each other how to tie knots! 4

Flying Scottlebutt The Leukemia Cup was a huge success and members of our own fleet played a part in it. The Scots were represented by Mike and Jo Ann Sullivan in Sweetie Pie, Jim Harris and Betty Struckhoff, Felicia Bamer and Jan Wilson in Serenity IX, Bill and Carol Clark in Havinfunow, and Pat Swan, Bill Kauffman and me in Friend-Ship. Tom and Sandy Pinkel also represented our fleet on race committee. Congratulations Mike and Jo Ann on first place! Well done! I have lots of on-thewater photos. I gave them all to Carol, but she wasn't able to get them up. If you want action photos, send me an (Leslie4857@msn.com) and I'll send you what I've taken of your boat. I'd like to extend a warm welcome to our new fleet members - the Kauffmans, the Pitzers, and the Miners. We look forward to sailing with you all and getting to know you better. Speaking of getting to know more about one another, during the Egyptian Cup Regatta this past weekend I saw Frank and Marianne Gerry's bottom! Nice bottom, guys, smooth, r-e-a-l-l-y smooth! I got a glimpse of a few more bottoms, too, before the day was over. Okay, I admit, we showed ours once or twice (racy, eh! :). I know the idea is to sail the boat flat, but we struggled in fresh winds measuring 15 knots plus at times. We got five full races in as we hosted twenty-one Flying Scots from the Midwest District. Competitors from as far away as Wisconsin participated in the weekend regatta. The competition was tough from the outset. The duos of Tim Dvries/Ryan Malgrim (FS 1202) and Susie Stombaugh/Tim Stombaugh (FS 2162) fought neck and neck for first place. Tim and Susie took race #1 and Tim and Ryan took race #2. The Stombaugh's battled back for race #3, but gained only a temporary lead 5 when the team Dvries/Magrim rebounded to grab race #4. Much to Fleet 83's delight, team Tom Pinkel/Peg Woodworth (FS 3076) won race #5. What a nail-biter! See how it all ended up at t CupFinals.htm. Again, I took lots of snaps, so feel free to me. The following weekend was visitor's day. We had nice fleet support with Pat Swan, Bill Clark, Tom Pinkel, Mike Sullivan and Shirley Bild from Scots. It was the first time since I can remember that we actually had wind on visitor's day. A few visitors returned to crew the next day. It's too bad our guests witnessed Pat committing a crime. It may actually be a felony, depending on the value of the Bakers' trailor, which Pat attempted to steal! He might've even gotten away with it if I hadn't personally seen a trailor already in his spot when we got there! And Tom & Linda thought I was just a Good Samaritan, standing at the hoist with their trailor when they pulled up to the dock. Little did they know that just moments before I forced Pat to remove his boat from their trailor and affix it to his own. Is the new rule "first one in gets the nicest trailor?" I think we should entertain discussion on that motion. Just a reminder that the following fleet members have agreed to race committee for July 10th : Tom & Sandy Pinkel, Pat Swan, Leslie Bilodeau, Bill & Lori Kessler, Paul Moore, Paul Moore 3rd. The 4th of July is right around the corner. I look forward to reporting the results of the CSA Championship and Holiday regattas ahead. Until next time, sea you!

Cat Tales by Joe Kasperek Visitors Day: Man, I thought it wasn't gonna to happen. It looked like rain from the moment I turned on to HWY 50 in Lebanon. Press on I told myself. If nothing else will have plenty of food and adult beverages and we could always regale those visitors that did show up with tales of high adventure, daring do and the Hobie way of life. We lucked out! It turned out (after the rain) to be a Cat kinda day (plenty of breeze). For those visitors looking for a good intro into Cat sailing, they couldn't have been disappointed. We had Jim Disano, Shirley Allen and Mark Hood sailing H-16's, Dave Leimbach and Bryan Gill on their H-18's and Greg Niedzwiecki on his Hobie Getaway. Mike Hill and Tom Paoli kicked it up a notch offering rides on Mike's rocket, the Inter 20. A good time was had by all and all were impressed by the performance of the boats and the skill of the skippers and Dave's ability to back his H-18 to the beach. I know that some went back for a second helping on a different Cat. It wasn't all sailing however. Other fleetsters, most notably Pat O'Donnell, Linda Moore and yours truly pulled shore duty. Birthday Girl: I guess we could've been nicer to her on the race course considering it was her birthday and all, but, we weren't. We celebrated Shirley's B'day, in between races, during lunch on June 19th, with cake "n" cards and other goodies. Just how old is she? Well, lets' just say she's too cute to be fifty-something. Oh!! And Shirley's mom was there too. That was a nice touch. Conspicuous by My Absence: I finally got out for my first sail and race of the season, on the third Sunday in June, and it almost didn't happen. In my haste to get out to the lake I left some important parts of my boat at home and had to go back to get'em. So, I missed the morning race. The parts in question were the springs for my boards. Anyway, having taken care of that problem I headed out for the second race. Not expecting much and with no chance of qualifying for the Spring Series I set a simple goal, get your butt around the cans in seaman like manner and enjoy yourself. It's amazing how quick it all comes back. It was a close race and I had a great time as the lead went back and forth among all of us in the High PHRF fleet. It's good to be back, but where's the rest of the fleet? Miscellaneous Ramblings: Patrick Renschen, as of this writing, is still in Italy and sent a picture that Pat O' was good enough to forward to us all. However, I'm puzzled. Did he break down and buy a digital camera? Seems to me that he has, or, had a distain for digital photography. Mike Hill packed up his Inter 20 for a trip up north somewhere. He told me, but, I forgot. 6

Ship s Store This month's featured item is a 12 oz. stainless steel travel mug. It is only $5.50! At that price get a set. The koozies are only $1 and a great inexpensive way to keep your cans cool in this heat. I have samples of several sizes and colors of Polo shirts for both men and women sizes. The sleeveless women's polo looks really great. I'll be at the lake the weekend of the Jul 9th -10th participating in the E-scow Mesa Regatta. I also expect to be there the next Sundays after that, July 17th and 24th. Check out the basement of the O.B. for me. If you miss me there feel free to call 618/ or me at rshindel@ezl.com or msaboff@siue.edu. Martha Shindel KOOZIES STAINLESS STEEL TRAVEL MUG Keep your cans cool with this inexpensive koozie. $1. 00 each Every cup holder in your car should have one of these nifty mugs $5. 50 each Answers to Rules Quiz S has broken Rule As the boats approach, P determines that she can cross safely, thus keeping clear as required by Rule 10. After P is committed, the course alteration of S does not "give the other boat room to keep clear". If S was in doubt of the ability of P to cross, her correct behavior would have been to maintain her course until it was obvious that she must alter course to avoid a collision, bear away to cross astern of P, and inform P of her course alteration and intention to protest. 7

Visitor s Day by Joe Kasperek They came from as far away as the Lake of the Ozarks (I tried to sail there once) and Columbia, Missouri. The sky was ominous, as if to say, you don't think I'll rain on your parade? From the pavilion, we watched as a fleet of competitors from CYC disappeared into a wall of rain. But, still they came and the sky cleared and a freshening breeze filled Carlyle Lake from dam to trestle. It turned out to be an exciting day. Of the 189 folks who signed up for our annual Visitors Day, ninety-six, including seven walk-ons, representing a wide demographic from children to seasoned citizens, braved the possibility of a rain out to take advantage of our hospitality and a hale and hardy group they were. As that freshening breeze continued to build, there was no lack of enthusiasm, among our guests, for a chance to experience an exciting ride under a full press. From Monohulls to Cabin Boats to Catamarans many of these folks waited in turn to try out everything we had to offer. Not that there weren't some problems and concerns. Not-A-Yachta lost a rivet on her port spreader causing it to separate from the mast (quickly fixed) and everyone kept an eye on the wind as it continued to build during the afternoon. In every respect the 2005 edition of CSA's Visitors Day should be considered a success. We put our best foot forward, despite the possibility of bad weather and were rewarded with complements and praise (see note sent to us, else where in the MARKS). Three membership applications were given out. Eight of our guests signed up for Adult Sail Camp. An equal number put their names on the Crew Sign Up Sheet. Our guests felt so at home at CSA that one of them, a young man by the name of Dereck, pitched in to move beer and soda from the pavilion to the O.B. and continued to offer assistance with any thing that needed to be done (just the kinda folks we like to have around here). O.K. time to roll the Credits; Kudos and high praise to the Forty-five CSA'ers who participated in running the event, giving sail boat rides and making our guests feel welcome. Good Job!! We did, however, miss those of you who signed up to help and couldn't make it. That's O.K. we know who you are and where your boats are parked and we've hired a little gremlin to remove all the stitching from your sails. In a very personal way we want to thank Mary Couch (Pat O'Donnell's sister) and her friends Mary Anne Lee, Anna Maria and Ken Lahman for their help in preparing and serving the food and refreshments. Although, they are not members, they are special friends of CSA and like Dereck, they are just the kinda folks we like to have around here. Thank You! Letter from a Visitor s Day Guest Dear CSA members, We had an absolute blast at your open house. Everyone was so accommodating. The boat rides were splendid. The food was great. So was the company. All very generous of you. Sincerely, Robert and Linda Goodrich. Swansea, IL. 8

CSA has Harbor Mice by Tobi Moriarty Those of you who have been at the club on Sundays this past month probably noticed the white Optimist Prams zipping around the harbor like a bunch of little mice around a farmer's barn. In addition to the already successful week long sailing camp started generations ago, CSA has established a Sunday Junior Sailing Program for beginning sailors. These impressive sailors meet every Sunday for ten weeks over the summer to learn the basics of sailing. Two instructors are assigned per week and the class is held from 10:30am until 3:30pm (or so!) Some of these "Harbor Mice" are yet too young to attend the overnight sailing camp but are now able to get a jump start. Imagine going to sailing camp as a ten year old with three years of Opti sailing already under your belt! Who are the Harbor Mice? Shannon Lacker (12), Melina Crosby (11), Kevin Lapp (11), Alina Moriarty (10 - until July), Megan Crosby (10), Stephen Eastman (9), Allison Lacker (8), and Emily Eastman (7) have all participated in June. Who are the Instructors? Nicholas Beckmann, Ted Harris, and Rob Horsfield Thank you to the following people for you support in starting this Sunday Junior Sailing Program: Ted Beier and the rest of CSA Board of Directors, Carlyle Youth Sailing School (CYSS), All of those who have made donations to the CYSS, John Sepanski for taking the time and energy to certify more US Sailing Level 1 Instructors at CSA, Felicia Bamer for always being there and helping, The parents of the "Harbor Mice" for getting your kids there and for making a financial commitment to a new program. Thank you to the rest of you for dodging the kids who have taken over the harbor as you leave and come back to the dock on Sundays. 9

Junior Sail Camp "This was the best week of my life!" exclaimed Dominic Carrol, a 10 year old camper who was on a Laser Radial. That pretty much sums up camp this year. We had beautiful weather for camping at night. The kids went out sailing everyday. The beginners were a little frustrated about capsizing and taking on water the first 2 days with mph winds. Once the winds settled down, they were proud of what they could do and spirits rose on Thursday and Friday. The advanced groups got a worko u t with the high winds. We had a new food coordinator this year. Her name is Laura Smith-Severson. She made it look easy. Laura went to several local businesses asking for donations. Donations were made by JW Produce, Save-A-Lot, Carlyle Meat Market, Wal-Mart, Dairy Queen, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, and Subway. Laura was helped by Elise Graham, Terry Franklin, and our nurse Cindy Barkman. John Sepanski organized the instructors and the presentations made to the kids. The kids put on presenta- by Nancy Eastman tions at lunch on "The 'Funnest' Time We Had Sailing". The young Opti group created a song on "Who are you Going to Call - Opti Sailors!" Some of the new volunteers attended the US Sailing Instructor Course taught by John Sepanski. They included: Denny Taylor, Nick Beckman, Ted Harris, Mike Bibb, and Rob Horsefield. Other sailing instructors included: Shirley Bild, Shirley Allen, Ford Miller, Heinz Dutt, Curtis Stahl, Jim Antonacci, Carol Aljets, Felicia Bamer, and Joe Gerrity. Our Junior counselors were K a t i e Graham, Bridget Doherty, Justin Daley, C h r i s Helmkamp and Ian Schillenbeekx. Sailing in the high winds was hard on the boats and the kids. Cliff Flath took care of fixing the boats and Cindy Barkman fixed up the kids. Both were busy this year. Dan Haile made sure our campfire was ready and he patrolled the campground. Debra Skaer and Ann Lacker were busy taking pictures. We also had several parent volunteers. We had a lot of new kids to camp this year. I hope they all return and that we get a lot of new ones next year too. 10

Juniors Compete in Annual Firecracker Regatta by Felicia Bamer Ian Schillebeeckx, Justin Daley, Carlie Dickson and Kyle Haggeman won first place in the four classes sailed at the Annual Junior Firecracker Regatta. Trying to hide behind the rocks of CSA, the race committee chaired by John Sepanski kept the races going and going in the 10 to 14 mph breeze on Saturday, June 18. In the Laser, Laser Radial and Opti classes leads changed and competition was close and stiff. First place for these three classes were determined in the afternoon. Twenty-seven (27) of the forty (40) Jr. Sail Campers sailed in the regatta. Laser (5); Laser Radial (9); Optimist Dinghy (8); Sunfish (5). Complete results will appear on the CJSA Web Site. Winners of the Photo Trophies Laser 1. Ian Schillebeeckx 2. Edd Burke 3. Colin Brennan Laser Radial 1. Justin Daley 2. Ian Morarity 3. Sam Bibb 4. Kristen Skaer Optimist Dinghy 1. Carlie Dickson 2. CJSA now has seven (7) Laser Radial Sails and eight (8) Optimist Dinghys that are leased. Contact Ted Beier or Felicia Bamer for more information. 12

What Type Of Boat Should My Child Learn To Sail On? by Shirley Bild U.S. Sailing Certified Instructor For the past seven years, I've taught beginning sailors at CSA's Junior Sail Camp. Six of those years I was teaching kids sailing Sunfish. This year I got to teach the beginning Opti group. What a difference it makes to use Optis! The Opti is a very stable easy to sail small boat about eight feet long. When we had winds of on Tuesday and Wednesday of camp this year, all of our beginning Opti sailors were able to sail (some of them paired up) with only a few capsizes. On those days, Sunfish sailors either sat it out because it was too windy or ended up capsizing frequently. The Sunfish are also much harder for a child to right when they capsize. Optis are lighter & much easier to launch & retrieve than Sunfish. Also they're very maneuverable and have a flat squared off front with padding on it. Because of this, our Opti group did not have any boat damage from collisions this year, where using Sunfish we always had some boat damage from collisions. The Opti is forgiving and easy for a child to handle. The Sunfish is frequently frustrating and difficult for a child to sail upwind. At the Firecracker regatta on Saturday we had wind of with quite a bit of waves on the lake. Of the five Sunfish who entered only one was able to make it upwind to the start line to actually start a race, the others gave up and had to be towed in. All the Sunfish that were out that day capsized at least once. Of the eight Optis who entered the regatta, all started the race within a minute of the signal and finished at least one full race. Four finished all six races in the regatta and we didn't have any capsizes among the Optis that day, although several had to do a little bailing. Because of the advantages of teaching beginning sailors in Optis, the sailing camp staff has decided that starting in 2006 only Optis, Laser Radials & Lasers will be used at CSA Junior Sailing Camp. If you own a Sunfish that you had planned to use for camp, we suggest that you advertise on the internet to sell it. There is still a good demand for Sunfish at other midwest lakes, although it may be harder to find a buyer at Carlyle. If your child weighs less than 120 pounds, we recommend you get an Opti. If your child weighs pounds a Laser Radial is recommended. Those over 140 pounds can sail a full rig Laser. You can buy an Opti from the CSA rental fleet for $800 or buy an Opti elsewhere at varying prices, ages, and condition. Again the internet is a good place to start your search. You really don't need a trailer for an Opti; it's lightweight & 4ft by 8ft dimensions allow it to be transported inside many vans or SUVs. A dolly is helpful for launching, but the Opti can be stored on the racks at CSA and a borrowed dolly used to launch, if you prefer. Radial rigs for Lasers can also be purchased or rented from the club. Talk to Ted Beier or Felicia Bamer for further information about rental or purchase of an Opti or a Radial rig for your Laser from the club. 13
