September was a month full events; the Strawberry Regatta was a great time with around 12 boats 4 of them being junior boats. The Whale of a Sail was a great hit with 70 boats that is up from 45 boats last year. Thanks for the great attendance. The catamarans had their Muddy Waters Regatta which had 15 boats again another increase from the past years. This is a great trend for CSA. In October, we have several more events planned; our normal buoy race will take place each Sunday. Troy Tolan is running the Fall Laser Regatta on October 13-15, and this has always been an exciting time with goods wind and good times. There will also be a Hare and Hounds Race on the 14 th. On the 28 th we will have our last longdistance race follow by a Chili cook-off and a Pumpkin Glow. Our last buoy race will be on October 29 th. As November approaches you need to be thinking about the volunteer opportunities needed to help prepare the club for the winter. Be on the lookout for s from the committee heads asking for volunteers; please sign up early for the work party on November 11th. This will help Jeanette plan the lunch. All boats must be removed by November 5 th unless you are keeping it here in winter storage. We will have our Membership meeting on November 7 th at the Wooden Nickle in Glen Carbon, Il. More info to come. Make sure to save the date for the Commodores Banquet. The Banquet will be held at the Maryland Heights Community Center on January 20 th. I will be sending out more info as the date gets closer. Let s keep the club going through October. The temperatures are on the way down and the winds should get better. See everyone at the lake. Sail on! Scott Stevenson Commodore 2017

Splinters from the Board First, thank you to the many, many people who make up the huge team of volunteers making Carlyle Sailing Association possible. Second, CSA is NOT like any other organization you ve ever belonged to. Third, let me help you understand how this club operates. In our organization, the Commodore and Vice Commodore actually run the club with guidance from the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors has a huge responsibility; the Commodore and Vice Commodore have even bigger responsibilities to deal with on a daily basis. The commodore s staff is made up of chairpersons for Adult Learn to Sail Program, Buildings, Commodore s Banquet, CSA Championship Regatta, Docks, Grounds, Harbor Mice, Junior Equipment Coordinator, Junior Instructor Trainer, Junior Sail Camp, 4th of July celebration, Marks of the Course (Our newsletter), Mechanical, Protest, Public Relations, Race/Cabin Hare and Hounds, Race Equipment, Race One Design, Safety, Ship s Store, Women s Regatta, US Sailing Representative, Try Sailing Day, Webmaster, Whale of a Sail, Work Party Lunch for spring and the fall, Sisterhood of Sailing (SOS). Each of these chairpersons has members who help with their committees. In addition to these traditional functions, we are looking to build a team to gear up our online and print exposure and help with projects this winter. We also have fleet captains for each fleet and sailing instructors who provide sailing lessons on an individual basis through our new program. Are you starting to get the picture here? It takes a lot of volunteers to operate such a fantastic club as CSA. end of his work day because he lives at CSA. So, please give Bob a break by not expecting him to be on duty 24/7. As you can see, it takes every one of you to help make this great club function properly, so please help. If you have a skill that you think will help, please let me know and I will get you plugged into the proper spot has been our biggest growth year for the past three decades, and we want to keep up the pace. Please help, and again, tell me what your special talent or skill is that you can use to help. The members of CSA have always functioned as a team and Teamwork makes the dreams work. If you are a member and you are not getting our Google stream communications as s, please contact Sebastian Bautz at sebastian@bautz.com, or Dick Shindel at rshindel@ezl.com, to start getting our communications is going to add many new and exciting features to your membership, if more members can help with the TEAMWORK. Thanks again. David Leimbach Chairman of the Board ehdave@aol.com (Whose birthday happens to be July 29th) We haven t even talked about our Harbormaster, Bob Winston. Bob is responsible for our rental fleet, which is growing in addition to his harbormaster duties. The Board of Directors recently decided to create a new Chairperson position for the Rental Fleet Maintenance. This person will be the contact person for Bob to report needed repairs; he/ she will then coordinate the repairs. Please consider covering this position and step up to the plate by contacting Commodore Scott Stevenson. Bob also maintains a job jar. If you are ever at the club and would like to help, ask Bob what s in the job jar. Besides the many responsibilities Bob has at our club, he doesn t get to leave and go home at the October 2017 Page 2 Della, Lucas and Selah Field making the Dream work. Photo by Dave Leimbach.

Vice Splinters from the Board By Ted Beier, Vice Chairman of the Board Your Board met on 20 September, and worked at various issues and initiatives. Items of interest to all CSA members included the following: Membership Report As of September, CSA has 142 primary members and 71 associate members as compared to 141 primary and 67 associate members in August. The sailing lesson feature attached to the associate membership continues to be very popular. As noted last month, for more info on this learning effort click the Member Instruction button at the bottom of the CSA website home page. Dock Anchoring System A meeting was held with Superintendent Wilkins from USACE in conjunction with the September Carlyle Lake Association (CLA) meeting. He will present our problems to St. Louis District Engineering, with a request for a meeting to discuss possible solutions. CLA is supporting our efforts here. Commodore s Banquet Venue Announced - The Commodore s banquet will be moved to 20 January to secure our desired venue; the Maryland Heights Community Center. A contract should be signed shortly. The caterer will be Tornatore s Associate Member (AM) Program The question was raised as to whether the AM program should continue as currently offered for 2018, or if it should be updated to include a work hour component to introduce these folks to more of the CSA culture. It was decided to leave the program as is for another year until more data on number of repeat AMs and elevations to regular members is available. AMs will be encouraged to participate in work party efforts and the various CSA committees. Work Chit Program Return of the work chit program to its original purpose/operation was discussed. The following were agreed, to be implemented immediately: Chits should be written for all work at CSA whether the worker needs one or not to determine the extent of work being done. This includes the efforts of AMs, committee heads, officers, and Board members. These must be conveyed to all committee heads for transmittal to the Vice-Commodoer. Work hour summaries need to be completed in time to allow issue of 2018 membership contracts by late December. The harbormaster will maintain a job jar to allow members to work on authorized projects at other times than regularly scheduled work parties. Committee heads need to be solicited for job jar items. Payment of Dues Via Credit Card It was agreed to set up a mechanism to pay CSA dues via credit card for However, a monthly payment scheme was rejected because of complication to our reporting to IDNR and other increased record keeping. If someone wishes to pay monthly, their credit card company must carry the burden. October 2017 Page 3 Boat Lot Asphalt Repair Vice-Chairman Beier was directed to work with Bob Hammel, Hazlet Park Super., to schedule the repairs that he offered recently. St. Louis Boat Show Participation A motion was passed to share a booth with Hazlet Park at the subject event, and pay ½ the cost thereof. CSA will share manning the booth on a basis. Much more on this to come. Rental Fleet Captain The commodore was directed to appoint a rental fleet captain to oversee the condition and maintenance of the rental boats. Vice-Chair Beier will be the BOD liaison for this position. The goal is to remove the fleet maintenance burden from Harbormaster Winston and provide the CSA administration with more oversight Calendar It was announced that highlights of the 2018 calendar need to be defined by the October meeting. Input of events for advertising with USACE, South Illinois Tourism, and other publications are required by early November to meet various publication deadlines. Definition of event dates and themes should be done by 18 October. Fleets are directed to get your date in to Commodore Stevenson by then. CSA 501.C(3) Entity Much discussion occurred about creating an additional 501.C entity at CSA, or expanding the current one to operate our rental fleet and sail training programs thereunder. The goals would be to facilitate obtaining additional boats and to have a method of financing these programs and compensating trainers uncoupled from other CSA operations. Many of the more successful club based training programs are done this way. Details need to be ironed out before further action is taken. The next BOD meeting is on 18 October at the usual time/ location. Meeting adjourned at Respectfully submitted, Vice-Chair Ted Beier Photo by Jeanette Beier

The most liked photo and winner of the CSA photo contest for September is a selfie taken by Julia Bautz. Congratulations Julia! CSA Picture Contest Got Laser? As you all know, we have a Fall Laser Regatta scheduled for Oct There are individuals that don't have access to a Laser but want to sail in this Event! If you own a Laser and are willing to offer it for use, please let me know asap. Thank you! Troy Tolan troytolan@videoop.co October 2017 Page 4

Tale of the Whale 2017 Photos by Marina and Rick Bernstein The Whale-of-a-Sail took place in mid-september under warm and light air conditions. The regatta took on a somewhat new purpose this year, aside from being CSA s marquee annual event. The Whale was to be chaired by Greg and Linda Vitt; relatively newer members at our club who have dove head first into being very dedicated members. It s become quite evident that these two really loved sailing, CSA and helping their Flying Scot Fleet. Unfortunately Greg was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer mid-summer and needed to step down as Chairman. The sailing community shifted quickly making this a very cool fund raising event to help this great couple out. As expected the volunteer spirit came out of the wood work, as did the donations. The Lightning Fleet donated cash, as did the Cat Fleet. Members and total strangers donated product and cash. An example of this is long time Carlyle Lake racer Doug Draper, who s never met the Vitt s, donated the beer truck. Our vendors gave us deep discounts and those who normally would be racing volunteered to help run parts of the regatta. October July 2017 Page Page 5 8 Friday night we had a nice welcome party in the clubhouse with snacks and drinks of many sorts. Sebastian Bautz and Carrie Leinicke had their ducks in a row running a fantastic registration table. Next to them my daughter Marina set-up, organized and ran the Chuck-A-Duck 50/50 event and sold T-Shirts all weekend. She did a fantastic job and was my right hand helper throughout the weekend. She also shot most of the Whale pictures you may have seen all over CSA s Facebook page. Speaking of Chuck-A-Duck, if you missed it, it was crazy, held for the first time ever.after dark. Thank you everyone for participating as we sold out of ducks and although we sold out of T shirts, you CAN still buy them. Go To Page 7 for more T- shirt information. Bronson Bowling and his race committee team had light and shifty conditions throughout the weekend yet still managed to get off three buoy races. Thank you, John Folwell, for the terribly, time consuming task of tallying scores for 9 fleets. A huge shout out to the 10 Jr. sailors who took their single handed boats out on the big people's race course and displayed a great future for sailing. Thank you to all volunteers and congratulations to all Long Distance, Buoy and Jr. trophy winners and everyone who raced. Race results can be seen on CSA s website. In the end as we always do, the sailing community stepped up and helped make a difference in the lives of Greg and Linda. How that is, unfortunately, it s too close to the regatta to finalize this information but stay tuned. We know we raised a lot of money and we know that Greg and Linda spent the day at the Whale on Saturday and they had a nice sail. I have nothing but the greatest admiration for all those who helped, for all those who sailed and for all those who donated to the cause. God s speed to you Greg and Linda. Thank you everyone. 7 Here is the coolest Whale T-Shirt EVER!!! During the regatta weekend the T-shirt sales were tremendous and the shirts sold out! If you didn t get one or need another, this is your chance your last chance. Men s and women s sizes are available. They are $15.00 each. You can place your order at the News and Notes web page: The_Whale.html October 2017 Page 7

September has been a busy month for the Flying Scot Fleet with several regattas and other activities. We were very happy to see Greg & Linda Vitt back at CSA on Sept 3, for the first time since Greg's brain surgery. Greg enjoyed watching the races from the bluff and Linda crewed for me in the second race. I understand that both Greg & Linda got out on their Ranger 26 sailboat for a few hours during the Whale of a Sail weekend. Backing up a few months... to late June: we had a record 5 boats from CSA travel to the Flying Scot North American Championship Regatta in Sandusky, Ohio. Everyone had a great time that week. We were too busy traveling to write a Marks article at that time, so here's a recap. Bild, Bowling, Casada, Sutton, and Vogler traveled to this event. There was lots of wind, cool weather, and waves. We definitely needed our foulies! Class rules call for no races in sustained winds over 20 and several days were near or above that level. All races were cancelled on Thursday (the last day of the regatta) as winds were over 25 with gusts in the 30s. On Sunday there was supposed to be a Women's and Juniors Championship competition that got cancelled, because there was too much wind. Some quick work on the part of folks at the Corinthian Sailing Club in Dallas, resulted in a rescheduled Women's and Juniors Championship regatta in September. Chris and I had registered to sail the Women's Championship in Sandusky that was cancelled in June. In August, we got word of the rescheduled Women's championship and decided to give it a go. We bought our plane tickets to Dallas and the folks from Corinthian Sailing Club in Dallas took care of everything else. They picked us up at the airport, arranged for us to stay with a club member who lives nearby, and lent us a boat for the weekend. The folks there were so hospitable and really know how to put on a good regatta. We had fun, made many new friends and improved our sailing skills. There were outstanding sailors that came from all over the country for the event. Competing in this type of regatta is quite different October 2017 Page 8 from club races. Several of the teams had arranged practice sessions before the regatta with expert coaches to improve their game. Although Chris and I didn't have a coach, we learned from watching and listening to some excellent sailors. Even though we missed out on CSA's Whale of a Sail to attend the regatta in Dallas, we're very glad we went. For folks like me who don't like the work of dropping a mast, trailering a boat for long distances and raising that mast again, the arrangements that the folks in Dallas made were great! I expect I will go back to the Corinthian Sailing Club for some regattas in the future, especially if I don't have to haul my boat down there! Because folks at that club can sail year around and many live just a 10 or 15 minute drive from the club, they get lots of practice and have many excellent sailors. While we were in Dallas, most of our Flying Scot fleet was participating in the Whale of a Sail at CSA. The following weekend (Sept 22-24) a group from our Flying Scot fleet will be attending the Glow in the Dark/Midwest Districts Regatta at Clinton Lake in Illinois. I'm sure we'll hear more about these in the future from those participating. Our fleet's holiday party has been scheduled for Saturday evening January 13 th at Pietro's. We hope all fleet members, crew, and friends of the fleet will attend. More details will be forthcoming at a later date. Shirley Bild Photo by Robert Cummings

Looking Over the Transom: The History and Handbook of CSA By John Folwell This series of articles started out as a review of CSA s rule book. I have pretty much exhausted that subject, however, I have not run out of historical information about CSA and its predecessor Valley Sailing Association, or of little known nautical facts of doubtful interest. As far as the rules go I still encourage members to read the rule book: I will discuss changes as they are made or emphasize sections as situations arise that are related to rules. Below is just such a situation. These pictures show the J24 Just So off its trailer on the parking lot. I refer you to Section IV Harbor Rules and Regulations, paragraph C. 3. g. (page21 in the above link). This paragraph specifies how a boat should be secured when parked on our facility. I don t know why Just So ended up on the parking lot. It could be that the boat was not properly secured and a strong wind blew it off its trailer. It could also be that even though the boat was properly secured the additional load cause by a strong wind made the starboard side of the trailer collapse. Whichever the reason, it illustrates the power of occasional storms at CSA. Just So weighs more than 3000 pounds. Check the condition of your boat s tie down equipment and your trailer. Photos by John Folwell For a look into the past I would like to show you my Commodore s report from February The corporation was still running both the Carlyle facility (CSA ) and the Mississippi facility (VSA). This was as far as I can remember the first time at Carlyle that a flood affected our operation. The water did not leave the parking lot until July 22, Full harbor operation started on July 28. While we were not able to run a regular race program, we did run races off the parking lot by either floating our boats off their trailers or by using a chain hoist. I designated these races our Flood Series and presented bottles of flood water as trophies. October 2017 Page 9 Continued on page 10

Looking Over the Transom: From page 9 For my little known nautical facts of doubtful interest, I want to introduce you to the bosun's pipe. The bosun's pipe or boatswain s call (formal name) is to the navy and ships as the bugle is to the army. Every evolution on a ship has an associated call. Even to this day the captain or visiting dignitaries are piped aboard a ship with the shrill sounding of a bosun's pipe. 12 October 2017 Page 12 Do You Know the Y-Flyer Beer and Boats Regatta was held at CSA August 19-20? Congratulations to Kevin and Wanda Black who captured the first place trophy! It was a challenging light air drifter but successfully managed by the Race Committee PRO Ted Beier. On Saturday, August 18, during the Skipper's Meeting of the Beer and Boats Regatta, Tom Barnett (Regatta Chairman), Dan Haile (Y-Flyer Class President) and Kevin Black, made a presentation of the President's Award to Ted and Jeanette Beier for their service to the Y-Flyer class. Ted and Jeanette have performed PRO and First Place Sailors Kevin and Wanda Black Race Committee duties for every Beer and Boats regatta plus every Y-Flyer Nationals Regatta held at Carlyle Lake since the first one in When Ted, Jeanette and the rest of the Race Committee team are on the job, Y sailors appreciate knowing they are going to get a well-run regatta.
