It is a beautiful June evening as I sit out on the porch of the OB (Club House by any other name) writing my article. You can hear kids playing in the background, look down towards the pavilion and see parents sitting around the bonfire. There are also several tents looking out towards a quite lake and stars covering the sky. It was a busy Saturday at CSA with a group of Navigators here with their parents. A work party was preparing for the Try Sailing Day to be held on July 1 st. Thanks to all that came out and helped. The Navigators had a great day of sailing and swimming off the beach. It now sounds as if they have headed off to bed as it has gone quiet. They will need their rest for another fun filled day on Sunday. This month of July is going to be very busy here at CSA. Harbor Mice will be starting, a Moon Light sail is scheduled for July 8 th, there is a crew day scheduled also on the 8 th with a Flying Scot demonstration. The Junior Olympic Sailing Festival will be held on July 15 th and 16 th. That is just a few things happening this month; make sure to check the calendar for all the other events. I have heard many good comments about the changes here at the club this year. There has been another change with the camping. The original spot for camping was the Cat Field till we had the flood and we had to move up near the bath house. This location has been such a hit that the board took a vote this past meeting and we have decided to allow the members to choose their camping location. You are now open to pitch your tent anywhere you see fit; I believe a great spot will be down near the pavilion and bonfire as there are several down there tonight. The night is getting late so I will wrap this up as I need to get some rest for another great day of Sunday races. I look forward to seeing everyone around the club. Please let me know if you ever have any ideas or events you would to see at CSA. Sail On! Your Commodore, Scott Stevenson

Splinters from the Board Summer Solstice has just welcomed the prime CSA season with wonderful long, warm days. We now realize our inner most instincts are catching up to us and the city life has lost its luster. We need: a wholesome connection to Mother Nature; air that s fresh; wind that fills our sails; to kayak exploring nature; to experience the beautiful sunsets; and to dream while gazing at the stars and the moon at night. To save our souls, to feel grounded, to be at peace, and to be at one with the Universe, we must sail and we must camp. hour introduction to sailing lesson, or if you are interested in being an instructor (certification not required and compensation available), please me at ehdave@aol.com. Thank you for helping others learn to sail! But wait! There's more!! Thanks to Bob Monaghan for donating a windsurfer/paddle board to the CSA rental fleet. Adults and juniors both will find using a windsurfer/paddle board helpful in learning wind reading skills. This is another opportunity to increase your membership benefits! Speaking of camping, seeing tents line the water s edge at CSA has improved CSA just as sailboats improve a lake. Camping improves your quality of life and the rewards of your CSA membership. Camping enables members to conveniently use CSA for a 2nd or 3rd day of fun. Camping has become a new family experience for some CSA members. It's been such a benefit to our members (that would be you) that the Board of Directors has revised the work-in-progress tent camping location policy. Here it is: tent camping location is unrestricted, but for your camping enjoyment it is recommended to respect common picnic areas. Prime camping areas include east and south of the pavilion, between the Shower House and Observation Building, and the areas east and north of the Cat Field. Primary and Associate members who have not yet obtained a complimentary camping pass should request one here: e/1faipqlsdgpuwwci6w6inisnysvhs92pxdg9j O614HNtuSfBtCBR8KwA/viewform Thanks to all the people who registered for classes and to those who helped make the Adult Sail Seminar and Jr. Sail Camp happen. Both events were incredibly successful. The Adult Sail Seminar was an opportunity to learn to sail in light wind conditions. The Jr. Sail Campers were challenged with heavier winds. This year so many of you have introduced new people to CSA and sailing since the Adult Sail Seminar and the Jr. Sail Camp, that there is a significant need for additional sailing lessons. If you are interested in a $60 3- Vice Chairman Ted Beier once again provides the detailed members report from the board meeting. Be sure to read his report for all the technical details you need to know. The photo I share this month is an example of how teamwork makes the dream work, and features Della Field and me double trapped on the Hobie 18. Every month Della Field helps me in creating the Splinters article. Her involvement is much appreciated. Thank you! Get to the lake! We must sail and we must camp! 3 Your Board met on 21 June, and worked at flood recovery and getting rescheduled 2017 programs moving. Items of interest to all CSA members included the following: Commodore s Report The docks committee needs the lake one foot lower to replace anchors with existing tools. It was pointed out that this will be a problem because the lake is dropping at only 0.1 ft per day, and Try Sailing Day will be difficult without fully functional docks. It was recommended that the docks be secured with Danforth style anchors using kellets until the water recedes sufficiently to replace auger anchors. The Vitts must resign as Whale chairs, and replacements are needed, but not yet found. Membership Report As of this date, CSA has 136 primary and 39 associate members. Associate members are up by 29 from Carlyle 50 th Anniversary Boat Rides This activity was very successful with eight sailboats making 60 total sorties and giving rides to around 120 people. All of the riders returned with big smiles, and CSA received much good publicity with the public and the Corps. Harbormaster Winston deserves many accolades for leading this effort. Well done, Bob! Also, thanks to the CSA members who helped by giving rides and manning our booth. US Sailing First Sail Program - CSA is now a US Sailing First Sail site. As such, CSA will be recommended to seekers of a sailing experience from the St. Louis area. Check the US Sailing website for more information on this program. US Sailing Certification Training - It was agreed to offer an instructor training course open to all US Sailing members on June This open course will cost attendees more than our certified in-house courses, but stipends will be available from CYSS for CSA members who will work within the CSA junior program. Also, US Sailing would like CSA to host their motorboat operation safety course. A motion was passed authorizing CSA to seek hosting of such. Activities with Boy Scouts - Planning continues to hold sailing activities for the Carlyle Boy Scout Troop. A motion was passed to allow them to hold meetings in the OB downstairs classroom at any time during the year. This will preclude the winter storage of junior equipment in this space. Cooling Unit Failures The AC in the restroom building has failed, and effort to procure a new unit has begun. Also, the ice machine, which CSA purchased from the Bartmans has failed. A motion was passed to purchase a new machine for an estimated $2400. It was decided to scrap the soda machine, which is no longer in use. Boat Parking Lot Pavement Repair Vice-Chair Beier reported that in response to his comments at a recent CLA meeting about flood damage at CSA, he was contacted by Hazlet Park Superintendent Bob Hammel inquiring about July 2017 Page 3 Vice Splinters from the Board By Ted Beier, Vice Chairman of the Board said damage. Hammel was told that the major damage was erosion of pot holes in the boat parking lot and failed dock anchors. Superintendent Hammel wants to visit the harbor to view same, and the visit has been coordinated with Harbormaster Winston. It was suggested that Hammel be shown the pavement damage in his parking spot, F3, which is so extensive that a boat can no longer be kept there until repairs are made. It was noted that this is the first time that a Hazlet park official has taken an interest in CSA needs. Junior Program Needs Director Crosby reported that some of the older BIC boats need replacement sails. He wishes to purchase dacron sails as they will last longer than the current mylar sails given our use. Also, he wishes to proceed with development of a landing stage for junior boats somewhere between Dock D and the launching ramp. The purpose is to reduce congestion around the courtesy dock and improve safety at that location. The Board was in agreement with these actions, which will use earmarked junior funds. High Water Operation Discussion was held about initiatives that can be undertaken now to improve future operation in the event of future periods of high water. These include: (1) operating sea wall electrics at water levels between 450 and 454 (including hoists), and (2) Improving dock maintenance tools and repair processes to be functional at water levels between 445 and 451. Director DeWille will discuss (1) with our electrician members. Also, alternate, less manual labor intensive, methods of cleaning the boat parking lot will be explored. Harbor Camping Area A motion was passed by a 9-2 vote to allow camping anywhere on the CSA property during the remainder of 2017 as a trial period to determine where the most popular areas would be. It was suggested that a desirable location would be between the pavilion and the lake as it is shaded, and is in close proximity to the pavilion, BBQ pits, and the campfire ring. The next meeting is on 19 July. Meeting adjourned at Respectfully submitted, Vice-Chair Ted Beier Photo by Jeanette Beier

Looking Over the Transom: The History and Handbook of CSA By John Folwell This month I am going to discuss CSA s racing program. Section V - RACE PROGRAM in the rule book discusses the parameters and scope of the CSA s sailboat racing activities in great detail. Here is a link to CSA s rule book: CSA_Handbook.pdf We try to offer a wide range of racing activities to cater to as wide range of sailing skill levels as possible. The primary focus of our racing activities is one design fleet racing. We schedule this kind of racing three or four Sundays a month with a nominal three races each Sunday. For 2017 if we were able to complete all scheduled races, we could have 78 races. We devote a lot of resources to this activity. We have a pontoon boat which is the primary race committee boat. We have three Boston Whaler motor boats used to set courses and patrol while races are in progress. We have a lot of race equipment: marks, flags, radios, etc. to ensure smooth operation and safety of participants. We also schedule pursuit races one Sunday each month. Pursuit races are a less intense form of racing using a handicap system that allows any class of boat to participate. There is also a Hare and Hound series scheduled for Saturdays. The Hare and Hound races are similar to the pursuit races but with a different format. Both the Pursuit and Hare and Hounds races include a social gathering on shore after the races. More details can be found on the CSA website: In addition to our regular racing program there are many fleet and class regattas run at CSA. CSA runs an annual regatta in September called the Whale of a Sail. The 2017 Whale of a Sail will be the 47 th held at CSA. If we count the 10 Whale of a Sail regattas held at Valley Sailing Association on the Mississippi River. This year s regatta will be the 57 th. Periodically regattas of national and international interest are held at CSA. In 1977 Yachting Magazine s One -of-a-kind was held at CSA. United States Sailing Association s Championship of Champions Regatta has been held a July 2017 Page 6 CSA three times. Next I want to introduce you to another individual that contributed his time and talent to the betterment of CSA. Robert G. (Lal) Burridge joined Valley Sailing Association in the late 60 s with his lightning. In 1972 he was CSA s second Commodore at the new Lake Carlyle harbor. Lal was a member of the Board of Directors for 31 years from 1975 to He was Board Secretary from 1985 to Lal was an attorney, a litigator; he had a big voice that could fill a court room or a board room. The board met in a meeting room at his firm for several years. Lal developed an index for the minutes he kept for the board so he could go back and find out what we had done on a given subject in the past. No mean trick early on before computers were available for the task. Lal was active in the Lightning Class Association, serving as a vice president for many years. For my little known nautical fact of doubtful interest I want to introduce you to knees in wooden ships. In wooden ships a knee is a right angle brace used to strengthen stress points in the hull or rigging. The greatest strength in wood is along the line of the grain. Therefore the strongest knees require the grain to follow a right angle. Wood for strong knees is found where a large branch grows from the trunk of a tree. A better source is found under ground where a large root makes a right angle with the main trunk. Knees that are mounted vertically are hanging knees or standing knees. Horizontal knees are lodging or bosom knees. Photo by J. Beier

Sunday Lunches Now Served at CSA This is very important even if you are not hungry. I'll tell you why in a minute. Come and get it! Another of our new initiatives at CSA will be Sunday lunches served in the first level of the Observation building that began Sunday June 25. Steve and Dianne who are CSA members and run the Hazlet cottages, camp store, the POOL and a catering business will have Cathy Kinkead in charge of serving us food (a sample menu from June 25 and July 2 is below). She will try to coordinate with the races and people coming in for lunch, and a little bit before, so folks on shore can beat the crowd. success of catering CSA, and not just for lunches. Please use them for your fleet events and special occasions. Future use of the POOL depends on this partnership, and now that summer is heating up, I gotta believe that we will be loving this pool thing. Let s walk this two-way street together and enjoy the new membership benefits CSA has to offer in 2017! David Leimbach ehdave@aol.com Please, Please, Please get your lunch from Cathy or at least stop by and let Cathy know your preferences moving forward. She wants to know what you want. Now why is lunch from Cathy SO important? Because Dianne and Steve are the same people that have agreed to let our members have unlimited access to the POOL. This pool thing is a one year trial and is based on the Menu Options, June 25 Sloppy Joes, Taco in a bag, Corn, Chips, Veggie Buffet for Tacos, Nachos and Cheese, Mandarin Oranges, Cake Menu Options, July 2 BBQ Pulled Pork or Chicken, Tomato/Cucumber Salad, Corn on the Cob, Baked Beans, Macaroni and Cheese, Brownies, Angel Food Cake CSA Pets on Parade! Patti Davis accompanied her black lab "Sailor" to CSA Friday evening June 24th for a "practice run" at boarding and taking a short ride on Jolly Green before she brings him out for a day of CSA fun!! CSA now allows your canine family member to take part in your sailing fun at the harbor. Your BFLF (best four legged friend) must be leashed and you have to clean up after them. So, no more boring days sleeping on the couch while you are sailing CSA. July 2017 Page 7

Y-Flyer Beer and Boats Regatta Photo by J. Beier Photo by J. Beier The CSA Y-Flyer Fleet 56 will hold its annual Beer and Boats Regatta at CSA the weekend of August 19 and 20. If you have a Y, or can borrow one, or rent the CSA Y-Flyer, join us for a great time. Three races are scheduled for Saturday and two more on Sunday morning. We will be doing a pot luck dinner on Saturday evening at the pavilion. Bring a dish to share. If you have questions, contact Tom Barnett, Regatta Chairman, tombarnett2012@att.net. July 2017 Page 8

Shout about CSA! We continue to need your help to create awareness about the great sailing facilities and amenities we all enjoy at CSA. We want to make many more people aware of who we are, what we are and how to become a part of our club. We have created new windows to CSA like our new websites at which in turn leads to We have six great hosts linked to a phone number to introduce and promote sailing. We have mailed out 700 postcards to prospects who have been to CSA and others who are sailboat owners. We have installed a new kitchen. We are working on plans for a deck off the members clubhouse (aka the OB). We allow dogs and camping, too. We have the Adult Sail Event and Junior Camp. We have increased the number of Saturday events. We have more social activities than ever before. All of these great enhancements are not enough. We need YOU to shout about CSA. You are our best sales reps. You can hang up a postcard in your office (I will mail you some. Call me at ), talk to your neighbors, blast it on your Facebook page, tweet about it, and bring people out to see CSA. We can get them on a boat for a ride. Tell them about upcoming CSA events or just bring them over. Be our voice, shout about CSA, after all, there is much to say. Oh, and please visit the Member Recruitment Page at Recruitment.html to learn about our great contest. We have decided to make the second place award a drawing among all those who recruit a new member. So you qualify even if you bring in just one new member. Learn how to get credit by visiting the page. If everyone would recruit one new associate or primary member, CSA would be humming. Be part of the reason that CSA is going to be better than ever in Mike Pitzer July 2017 Page 10

Carlyle Sailing Association Hazlet Park Road Carlyle, IL July 2017 Page 12 Do You Know Crystal and I brought the Indulgence, our San Juan 21, to CSA last Saturday, June 24. We had relaxing drives between St. Charles and CSA, listening to Allen Jacksons Drive album and, of course, Jimmy Buffet s Creola, Take Another Road, Cowboy In The Jungle, He Went To Paris, and other greats. That is unusual for me as I am usually a bit apprehensive towing the boat, even after 37 years of being on the road with it following close behind. We arrived about 11:30 a.m. and it was a beautiful, breezy day at CSA. As Crystal and I rigged the Indulgence and stepped the mast, I was pleasantly reminded of my weekends at CSA in the 1980 s and early 90 s when CSA was a bustle of activity. Back in those days sailing families were all over the grounds, lots of boats at all four docks, children, mostly wet from swimming and playing in the hose, running around and having all kinds of fun, and back then it was not unusual to have difficulty finding a spot to park the car. Last Saturday was very similar in many respects; there were lots of sailing families enjoying the day, several scout families were at the dock getting basic sailing lessons as part of a day of Scout Adventure, and there were wet children playing and laughing. The sounds of families having fun floated on the breeze across the sunny harbor. Even Harbormaster Bob said the place is buzzing. This Saturday was also very different than in past years. CSA had tent campers on the grassy knoll between the pavilion and the shower house, there were families enjoying the company of their canine family members, and there were kayakers putting their muscles to the test in the harbor and beyond. Yes, it was a beautiful day at CSA. Crystal and I enjoyed reconnecting with sailing buddies, and listening to all the different song birds that make Philippi Harbor their summer home. Like in the old days, I even enjoyed working on the boat. Now the Indulgence is all ready, so we look forward to our next visit to do some sailing.
