It has been super busy around CSA with all of our camp opportunities, regattas and races. Here is a quick look at what will be happening in July!! In an effort to bring our CSA families out for the 4th of July (July 2nd) Rick and Janice Watson are chairing a chicken and ice cream social at CSA. Join them on July 2nd for a family potluck (chicken and ice cream compliments of CSA) and take advantage of the best view of Carlyle Lake's fireworks from our own CSA grounds. Make it a weekend and hang around Sunday for the Pursuit Race and Harbor Mice activities. Ashley Enders is prepping for Muddy Waters scheduled for July 9-10th. Please contact her to help out. Joy Bode and Jerri Franklin are chairing our Strawberry Regatta on July16. This is the same day as Hare and Hound#3 so ladies load up your boats and take the helm. A dinner and activities are in the works so watch for a flyer there. One of our more popular races will get underway July 24th as we welcome members and visitors for the "Mini Mega Race". Take this opportunity to improve your sailing and racing skills in these fast paced races. 4 Photos by P. Coonan Adult Sail Seminar Wrap-Up Hello Sailors, After just completing my first venture running the Adult Sail Seminar, I must say; WHAT A BLAST IT WAS. It was a completely different stress than running a regatta, because here you deal with 26 individuals and all their personalities and schedules and their various sailing and life experiences. With a regatta you promote, take a registration for a boat and there you go. Here it was s and phone calls and face-to-face communication continuously, seriously, getting to know these folks, and I loved it. July 2016 Page 4 After spending 6 years watching Dave Leimbach run the camp, I had a fresh idea that was either going to bomb, or be a hit. Thankfully intuition paid off and for the most part the response was and has been very positive. My thinking was, why not use racing as a tool to teach. For many weeks I made sure instructors knew not to shove racing down these newbies throats, but on and off the water we would use parts of racing as the platform to help better sink in all that we're teaching. We started with day 1 simply having the students sail out to the starting line which was the pontoon and a starting mark they were then to practice tacking and getting use to the helm, trimming their sails, communication with crew, while getting the boat upwind to a few marks. Then go around the mark and sail back to the starting line. On day 2 we shortened everything so students had closer quarters do the same, but with boats around them, thus teaching keeping your head outside the boat, talking to crew, learning right-of-way rules. In the afternoon we introduced listening to the horns helping count them down to a start, and with their instructors first showing them, get to the line after 5 minutes and go upwind. Here you could really see the eyes light up in students as we added a little taste of competition. On the final day, we held an impromptu laid back easy going regatta with more controlled starting sequences, instructions announced over the RC boat's PA system and wow, did these students ratchet it up a notch. I'm really proud to say every student was remarkably proficient by day 3 and the progress was incredible and the competition was fun and fantastic. I recall at one windward mark about 10 boats arrived within about 30 seconds and I heard hailing "starboard," and I saw a few boats duck to avoid, and I even saw teams erupt in excitement when they won a race. For those of us who race, we know the learning curve goes straight up when, as individuals and teams, we're trying to get around a course compared to basic day sailing.it became quite obvious the teaching method introduced worked. A huge thank you goes out to the CSA members who helped make this a huge success. From the land team to the power boat help to the 14 instructors, this camp would never succeed without their help. Thank you, Kay Ward for spending 3 days driving the boat as I filmed the students in action. I have to give a huge shout out to Dave Leimbach for letting me run with my idea and being there for me the past 6 months as I worked to put this seminar together. Finally, to the 26 students, it was like watching your kid take their first step I'm so very proud of the progress they all made over the very quick 3 days. We'll be following up with all of them with the goal of getting them back to CSA on boats as crew or possibly soon on boats of their own. Rick Bernstein Director 2016 Adult Sail Seminar CSA Snippet Shirley Allen was recently searching the harbor for two rudders lost by the juniors. She found one, and found a rudder that had been in the harbor for a long time, and looks like it may be for a Snipe. She is still hoping to find the other junior rudder. If you or someone you know has been missing a Snipe rudder, the one Shirley found has been left by the race shed.

7 By Bronson Bowling and Linda Vitt Photos by Jeanette Beier Things are really heating up this summer at CSA. << You can t fault us for stating the obvious puns.>> No surprise that the parking lot seems to melt under your feet and the downwind runs remind you of a rotisserie oven. Yes, heat was on the menu this weekend, but so were a lot of fun and good times with friends. The only relief was a wonderful cooling tent set up on the asphalt desert by our wonderful Fleet Captain Bronson Bowling. The moderate to light and variable winds of the summer were well established for the annual hosting of the Egyptian Cup Regatta. This event was founded at Crab Orchard Lake and over the years has evolved to be Fleet 83's home turf Flying Scot event. Our entire fleet pitched in and executed a well-run regatta. First time Regatta chairs Greg and Linda Vitt represented our club and our fleet well in their organizational efforts, and a huge special thanks to Bill Kesler for all his behind the scenes work to make this year's regatta run smoothly with registration and creating a great ECR web page. Special awards were presented to Greg and Melissa Ziegenfuss of Butler's Pantry for the outstanding menus they provided, and to Ted Beier PRO for heading up another great race committee; both are long-time supporters of the ECR. We thank the entire fleet for all of the contributions in time and energy that were made to produce a welcoming, positive and lasting impression with our guests. It s always good to hear so much laughter and lie-telling from friends and competitors. We even had a pharaoh on hand to tell us how July 2016 Page 7 bad things have gotten in retirement. Twentytwo boats competed in this years event with 10 traveling to CSA from Ohio, Tennessee, Kansas, Indiana, Georgia and Clinton Lake, Illinois. We would like to welcome Vito and Diane Calcara to the fleet. They recently purchased Flying Scot #5000 from the club newlyweds, Mike and Linda. Additionally, we d like to welcome Paul and Andrea Levinson who recently purchased Felicia's boat #5638. If you are reading this as a new sailor, or someone who has recently signed up on our get into sailing page, thank you! Many folks in your place can be intimidated by sailing and how seemingly complex it can look. Additionally, there are so many unknowns. How can you learn it all? That s what we are here for. We believe that sailing is a lifelong recreational sport and pastime. Sailing is something that takes time to learn and mistakes are going to be made. Once you ve accepted that imperfection and know mistake making is part of it, the real learning starts. Come visit with us, send an , but don't wait, it s time to get into sailing. Keep an eye on the CSA calendar for upcoming events and activities. The summer club race series kicks off soon.

10 Marine Rules of the Road That Apply at Carlyle By Ted Beier Several questions have been raised lately about this topic, with the night sailing season in full swing, so a quick review is timely. The primary rules come from the international convention titled, The International Rules for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea, or IRP- CAS. As an aside, you will even see this document referenced in the racing rules because when racing at night, the racing rules turn off, and the IRPCAS governs. (Can you find this reference in the RRS?) The US Coast Guard makes various sets of rules that comply with IRPCAS for US territorial waters including inland lakes and rivers. All of these talk about a Burdened or Keep Clear vessel and a Privileged or Stand On vessel. Any state regulations are required to agree with the USCG rules. When operating at night, sailing craft 22 ft LOA or less need only a white light to deploy on their sails in the presence of on-coming vessels. Larger sailing vessels need red and green side or combination lights and a white stern light. A sailing vessel under power with a motor of 15 hp or greater must comply with the same light requirements as motor vessels. A sailing craft meeting a motor vessel is always the stand on vessel, but if the motor vessel is a jet ski, I would not depend on the operator knowing that. The only exception is that if the motor vessel must stay in a marked channel for safe passage, she is the stand on vessel within that channel. When operating CSA motor boats for the racing program, keep the following in mind: A vessel crossing from your starboard side will be the stand on vessel, and you are the burdened vessel. If crossing from port, she is burdened. July 2016 Page 10 A vessel passing another is always the burdened vessel. A vessel towing another vessel(s) is always the stand on vessel. Those are the published rules. Here are some experiences of Harbormaster Winston. While night sailing recently, a patrol boat followed me into the harbor to say that I needed navigation lights. I cited the law that states a flashlight is sufficient for a small unpowered craft. The federal officer reaffirmed that "No, you need the red & green navigation lights" After a "Yes sir, understood", that was the end of it. The same scenario has happened to me on Crab Orchard Lake with federal fish & wildlife officers. I think the law is very open to interpretation by law enforcement. One version I found states; -"If practical...red & green sidelights and white stern light visible..." -"If not practical, have on hand at least one lantern or flashlight..." "Practical" is wide open to interpretation. In the end, safety is the intent of the lake patrol and I tend to agree that the red, green & white combo better shows the direction of travel and right of way. With LEDs, There is a wider selection of portable navigation lights these days. Go here for and example of LED nav lights. LED-marine-battery-powered-sail-canoe-kayak-dingy -/ ?hash=item4d3cb14fe0
