2 APRIL 2011 Commodore s Corner Dear Weather Gods, please send Spring back! We need this white stuff gone so we can go sailing in a few weeks. Ok, got that out of my system, now to the important stuff... Hard to believe I m already typing about harbor opening... YAAAHHHHOOOOOO!!!! The big work party to open CSA is scheduled for Saturday April 9th, watch your in boxes for more details. This is one of the major opportunities to get your work hours complete to credit towards your 2012 membership. If we don t get everything finished on the 9th, April 16th is scheduled for a back up plan. IF... and that s a BIG IF... All the work to open CSA is completed on the 9th, boats can start coming in on APRIL 16th, (no that s NOT a typo). With Easter falling the way it does we ve obtained special dispensation to allow boats in early, so we can celebrate Easter with the parts of our family that don t sail. No boat will be allowed on the property if there is still work to do, so come out on 9th and help us open CSA. Watch your boxes for an from me or Peter Conant on Monday April 11th to let you know if we need more work completed on the 16th or if boats will be allowed in on the 16th. In the worse case scenario boats will be allowed in on Sunday April 17th (again that s NOT a typo). Other happenings in April include, the Race Management/Racing Rules Clinic presented by Ted Beier on April 15, from 7 to 10:30 PM at the Maryland Heights Community Center. The session is free to CSA members and $10.00 for all others. For those who want to come, please let Ted know as soon as possible of your interest, and whether you would like the majority of the time spent on (1) how to run races or (2) racing rules. the Vice Commodore, Robb Preston, is working diligently to get the membership packets to you before the 16th, so you will have all your stickers in place before you bring your boat and car to the harbor. Remember to make sure your name hasn t faded from your trailer tongue, you update your spot number (including row letter) on that same tongue (if needed), affix your mast sticker above the top of your top cover so it can be seen with the cover on. Lastly place your 2011 bumper sticker on your car so Mary & Joe can see it easily as you approach the gate. the fleet captains are working with VC Robb to get the parking spaces assigned. VC Robb & Jean Pierre Bordes our Sunday Race Chairs are also working with the fleet captains to get the race duty days assigned. If you have any questions or concerns first reach out to your fleet captain and then reach out to me or Robb. Ok... that s the important stuff for now... Now say this with me... DEAR WEATHER GODS, PLEASE SEND US SPRING SO WE CAN GO SAILING IN A FEW WEEKS. Look forward to seeing you on April 9th or at the Harbor the end of the month. Andrea

Splinters from the Board APRIL Hello to all the new members of CSA, and a special hello to all those returning for another fantastically fun-filled year, which is just around the corner. Normally in these lines you read me discussing the highlights of what occurred at the last board of directors meeting. However, given I m over 40 now, and this is the reason I m sticking with, I ve misplaced my Key West Race Week soft sided briefcase that s gone with me to every board meeting since With this said, yes I could have called another to get some information but time has run out and I m going to beat the proverbial asking for my article from Karen, our esteemed Editor. Here s what I know: 1. The budget for 2010 is closed and we finished in the black. Thank you to everyone who committed themselves to fiscal responsibility, a lesson the US government could use. 2. The 2011 budget organized by Andrea Sepanski, our Commodore, looks great. The only major project underway is the new bridge to the Observation Building. 3. The old observation building bridge is gone and the new one has been designed by John Folwell; he s a CAD guy now. It s different than the old, a little more square in nature, but the old slippery first ramp is gone. We re working on a few modifications to get the new look as nautical and fitting as fiscally possible. 4. All the new windows in the OB are in and viewers say they look great. 5. Adult Sail Seminar is filling up and filling up quickly, so if you know anyone who wants to spend 3 great days in June learning to sail, check out CSA s website for information and application. 6. The club has been asked to join a lake wide on-line members roster dedicated to the 4 sailing clubs on the lake. With a few answers, this is something we re looking at doing. The goal is to bring the clubs closer together. Moving on to a subject worthy of really focusing on here, and that s registering for this year s very special Leukemia Cup Regatta. Included in this Marks are two documents to assist you. The first highlights 3 never before seen donation packages filled with priceless keepsakes from LCR s past. For example, LCR Mount Gay Rum hats, shirts and bags, plus many other special items. The more you donate, the more you get. Also included is your registration form. Get it in early to make sure your boat name gets on this year s specially designed LCR Shirt. Here s a tip on how to get donations. Draft an , about 2-3 paragraphs, to all your friends and colleagues. Simply state the reason for your is your requesting donations for a very special event that you re a part of. Describe the regatta, how it s in its 11 th year, raised close to $500,000 for St. Louis researchers and families in need, and how this year is extra special because the disease we re fighting hard for very recently took one of our original members. I did this exact same thing a few years ago and collected over $400. Request that checks be sent to you in the name of the Leukemia Society. All it takes is 5 minutes to do this, and the rewards will really surprise you. Thank you. Rick Bernstein Chairman of the Board Carlyle Sailing Association Bald Eagle photographed from the OB deck by Mary Bartman. Check out page 11 to see a photo of the missing bridge.

6 APRIL 2011 Notices The Hare and Hound Race Allen Branch Coles Creek C S A CSA H & H Start and Finish Line The race course will start directly in front of the CSA Pavilion. From the starting line you sail to the Coles Creek mark (Red Line) and make a port rounding. From the Coles Creek mark you proceed to the Allen Branch (Blue Line) mark make a port rounding then return to the Coles Creek mark (Orange Line). You make a port rounding of the Coles Creek mark (Green Line) and return to the cabin fleet start finish line. See the drawing of the course above. The race dates: May 21 June 18 July 9 August 20 September CSA Hare & Hound Racing What could be more fun than sailing around the lake with friends and family doing a laid back race! All boats at CSA are welcome. If you haven t done it before, give it a try. It s simple and fun. If you have done some in the past I encourage you to continue. It s all about being on the water, having fun and enjoying friends. The proposed race course would remain the same for the entire 2011 season. The starts would be staggered so the slowest boats, based on their PHRF number, would start first thus eliminating a crowded starting line. Scoring would be simple because a yacht s finishing position would depend solely on when she crossed the finish line in relation to the other competitors. At 4:00 the results will be announced at the pavilion where all can sit and enjoy complementary beer and soda while tall tales are told of the days adventures. Sail 3 of the 5 and you qualify for a H&H excellence award at the Commodores banquet! The Skippers Meeting is at 10:00 AM (required) The boat with the highest PHRF number will start at 11:00 PM. We will try to score 4 divisions, Low/high PHRF; One Design & Cats

8 APRIL 2011 Tid-bits you might find interesting... or not I have heard a rumor that Holly is engaged. That s all I know about it... Maybe she will send us an with the details. With the sailing season starting soon, many of us may need to brush up on our knots. Others may need to learn them for the first time. In either case, here is a web site that shows you step by step in a series of animated photos how to tie any knot you will need. If you think backing your boat and trailer down the ramp is a lot of drama, take a look at how the really large cats like Alinghi are moved around Europe. =sywu9uxc9qy&feature=related Pat and Sue make friends with a Carnaval dancer on their trip to Oruro, Bolivia. Cat Tales by Dave Waugh Dyslexics of the world untie Well, here we are. Just a few weeks until CSA opens. Time to plan your spring events. Check the calendar in the back of the Marks. It has all the club events listed. The first major thing is on April 9th, the spring work day. For the newer members of the fleet, this is the day the docks are put in, leaves and debris are raked up, hoists are installed and all the rest of the housekeeping items that allow CSA to function as one of the best sailing organizations in the Midwest. Bring your rakes, shovels, hand tools and other implements of destruction and come on out. This is a great time to meet people who are not in the cat fleet. This counts as work hours to be applied towards next year s dues... like money in your pocket. Also, you can bring your boats in on April 16th and the first race is May 1st. May 21 is the first Hare and Hounds race. For those new folks, this is a long-distance race which is handicapped at the start. At the skippers meeting you will be given your boat s starting time. It might be something like 11:28:32. Other boat types may start 3 minutes later or 8 ½ minutes earlier. This way every boat you beat across the finish line you beat. No waiting for time corrections. If you who wish to learn how to race, plan on attending the racing clinic on May 22. I have not heard the particulars yet but last year there was an hour or two classroom sessions of basic rules and procedures. Then we went out for on the water practice doing starts and short upwind leg for several hours. Ted Beier does a very good job with this event and it is well worth the time. Latham Souther and Jim Disano attended the Hobie 17 North Americans last summer. Jim finish 13th and what did Latham do, you ask? As you can see by the photo that appeared in the Hobie Hotline (distributed nationally), Latham received the Tow of Shame after he dismasted before the first race on Tuesday. 9 Flying Scottlebutt APRIL by Linda Tatum Flying Scot Fleet 83 is preparing for an exciting season. Committees have been formed for a wide variety of activities, some requiring sailing skill and some just requiring enthusiasm for the fleet. Anyone not yet involved in a committee is encouraged to call Fleet Captain Mike Pitzer to discuss all the possibilities for contributing their skills to a committee or committees they determine to be the best matches to their interests and skills. Our 2011 Egyptian Cup Regatta planning is in full swing. This regatta has a rich history dating back to the Crab Orchard Lake Sailing Club (COLSC) near Carbondale Southern Illinois. The name of the regatta stems from the association that Southern Illinois has had from the 1800 s with its the geographic and historical relationship similarities with Egypt. More on that can be found in an article written by Fleet Captain Mike. He has circulated the article to Flying Scot Fleets around the country. Originally this was a multi-class regatta with Lightnings, Y-Flyers, Sunfish, C-Scows and Rebels participating. Do any of you Lightning, Hobie or Y-Flyers remember participating in the old days? Over time the COLSC membership dwindled to only Flying Scot and Hobie fleets. When COLSC activity ceased, and thus Flying Scot Fleet 30 was no longer, Scot sailor Clark Ashby turned to Scot fleet 83 here at CSA to continue the Egyptian Cup. Thus we inherit this wonderful tradition which started before CSA even existed. We hope to have wide participation as this year will give participants the opportunity to prepare for Nationals to be held at CSA in Captain Mike is encouraging all to become members of the national Flying Scot Sailing Association (FSSA) because it supports our particular boat which helps build fleets, resale values and national recognition. Remember, the Scot is in the sailboat hall of fame as a design!!!!! Membership has numerous benefits which can be found on the FSSA Association website, There are Associate Memberships for those who are not boat owners but enjoy crewing on Scots. The pristine waters of Sarasota Bay (Florida) were playground for Felicia, Chris and Shirley in Mid March. They had a great time and encourage everyone to try an early start of sailing season next year by attending Mid-winters. This year s event was hosted by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. This volunteer run club enjoys shade tall trees and bluegreen water. Photos of their facility makes one think you could pretend you are in old Florida, void of high rise condos that exist on the other end of the key bridge. Be sure to ask our trio who went for a full run-down when we next gather around our picnic tables. photos by Chris Beutler

10 APRIL 2011 ANNUAL WINE AND CHEESE PARTY- SATURDAY APRIL 9 Hosted by Phil and Inge Holland Contact or inge@summit-container.com WHERE IS EVERYONE THIS WINTER!!??!! Phil & Inge went sailing with the Denny and Shara Taylor (who plan to be back in MO in late April) on their beautiful Beneteau. Bob Lischer joined us. The day was perfect including the sail under the gorgeous Sunshine Bridge. (I just got to drive over it.) Dave and Barb Huhn visited Barb Size and saw her really cool new house at Gulf Shores. Bob and Libby Weinman went to Colorado. Cabin Fever by Felicia Bamer FRUM JOE DA FLEET CAPT Hello cabin fleet. Only a few days left, and we will once again be on the water. It s been a long winter, and I can t wait to see all of your smiling faces as you bring your boats in for another season. It s kind of like watching kids coming down the stairs on Christmas morning. Grins from ear to ear and you just can t wait to get out the toys and go play. Now I know I don t need to plug the Bob Levin Leukemia Cup to you, but I will anyway. We all need to register our boats for this year s regatta. Even if you do not plan on racing register. Bob will be sorely missed around the cabin boats and the money goes to a more than worthy cause. We are the largest fleet in the club and we need to make a great showing this year. Any questions? Register by May 1st, you get your boats name on a really great shirt. If you are new to the cabin fleet, be sure to stop at the front office and either Mary or I will help lead you in the right direction. I would also like to invite you to join our cabin fleet social group. We have something going on of every month of the year. It s a great way to get to know the rest of the cabin fleet and to be able to hang with some really kool sailors. Just let me know and I will get you hooked up. Until next time, Sail fast and Don t Panic! Joe Bartman, Cabin Fleet Captain Jolly, Jill, Jack, and Shirley Party Guests photos by Felicia Bamer ANNUAL ST. PATRICK S DAY PARTY Shirley Reports: The Cabin Fleet met at our house on March 12th, for the traditional St Patrick s corned beef & cabbage dinner. Our daughter, Jill, drove in from Dallas with her car loaded with cooking utensils and her cat Abby, to help me and join in the fun. Jill will be returning Memorial Day weekend to cater the Leukemia Cup breakfasts but will need some help. VOLUNTEERS? Twenty-three Cabin Fleeters attended, including some newcomers to the Fleet: Patty& Brice Davis, Carol & Ray Sherwood, and Janice & Rick Watson and Firses neighbors: Marc and Marie Chrisman (who donated the champagne for the renaming ceremony) and Carolyn Layman. The evening started with the boat renaming ceremony (courtesy of sailing author John Vigor) for Jack & Shirley s new Hunter 260. There was champagne, laughter, and a welcome party for Jolly Green. The idea for the name came from Heinz Dutt, an Air Force Vietnam veteran, at the February party. He knew that Jack was an Air Force helicopter pilot in Vietnam, and the HH-3E helicopter he flew into Laos and North Vietnam on rescue missions was nicknamed The Jolly Green Giant because of its size and green camouflage paint. The idea was immediately accepted and celebrated by Jack & Shirley. Next month Jolly Green and her crew are heading to Florida for the 42nd Reunion of the other Jollys. Birthday Gifts are Important!! Cabin Fleeters have added a new dimension Soling One Meter. In 2006, the CYC RC (Radio Controlled) Sailing Fleet began as an AMYA sanctioned club. Where is New Town? Now I own six sailboats. Thanks to Chuck who had a wheel on the boat (he knew I was a tiller person!); thanks to Dave for my tiller. Just wait a month! I am going to win a race. Join us! Sure was windy last Sunday! They don t capsize. Weekly all year on Wednesday you can race from 4 to 6 pm as long as it is not too hot nor too cold.

APRIL The Bob Levin Leukemia Cup Regatta is Friday Sunday, May Friday night is the CYC Welcoming Party, Registration and the start of the Silent Auction; Saturday besides racing (one-design, cabin around the buoys, long distance with single start), is Breakfast provided by Cabins and Cats (volunteer to help), Welcome, Lunch, Silent Auction, Rum Party, Chuck a Duck, Dinner, Live Auction, Band. Photos by Felicia Bamer Judy Barnett Judy, Judy, Judy! Judy was the first female skipper I met when I raced in the 1970 Whale of a Sail at CSA. At West County Shopping when 4 boats were on display was the first time I really talked with her. She really only talked about me buying a Y-Flyer (such a big flat boat from a Snipe). Therefore, it is Judy s Fault I purchased a Y in 1981, and Judy s Fault I sold my second Y in (The beginning of her involvement in starting the City of Maryland Heights was in She was rarely racing in 1993.) I even crewed for her once (1980) in Beer and Boats before. I told her one Sunday I was looking at purchasing a Y. On Thursday that week, I was driving back with my first Y-Flyer from Atlanta. The class (AYFYRA) through her gave me wonderful leadership positions (Internationally and Nationally and Locally). Let me know if you wish to know more information about the afternoon of April 16th Celebration. (fbamer@sbcglobal.net or ) I learned of Judy s passing from another female skipper Shirley Allen. Shirley wrote: Judy was a great lady and one of the few female skippers when I joined CSA. She was so tough on the boat. I was scared of her, but I tried to be like her. I even used to wear a black swimsuit like she did. She and Tom sailed their separate boats, as did Terry and I. When I got to know her, turned out she was nice. Judy: Thank you for your Friendship and Laughing and Mentoring and Knowledge! Sadly, Felicia (Ms. Serenity III; Serenity IV)

12 APRIL 2011 Y s Guys by Dan Haile The Y-Flyer Fleet as well as most of CSA was saddened at the passing of Judy Barnett. Early March, CSA members worked on repairs to the docks. The sailing season is rapidly approaching. Work parties are underway to get the club ready to go for the season. The Y-Fleet held their own work party to get our SPEC boat into shape for the season. The trailer bunks were replaced last Saturday. We still have more work to do to it, so if you have some time, we still need to do more to get it ready. She was a force within her family, her community, and her sailing club. She will be missed. Our condolences go out to Tom and the rest of her family. The MAC Regatta Schedule has been put together. Dan Haile is MAC coordinator this year. See him for membership details. There are only 5 regattas this year and a few changes with those. There will not be a Riviera Regatta since Mattoon is hosting the Nationals this year. We have also decided that due to man-power issues, the CSA Y-Flyer fleet will count the Whale-Of-A-Sail as a MAC regatta instead of holding the Beer and Boats regatta. The Y-Fleet should participate in some of the upcoming CSA activities. For example, Ted Beier is putting on another of his very informative Racing Rules Seminars on April 15th. I think he is going to concentrate on Race Committee activities this time. I think most of us will need to learn how to run a Pursuit Race properly. We also need to participate in the Open House on July 2 nd in order to get our boats shown to potential new members. I am willing to sail the SPEC boat for that event to show it off. I hope everyone has been working on lining up crew and getting their boats ready for the season. I d like to see a lot more Ys on the starting line this year. We all need to sail more just to get ready for the Nationals. It is very close to home this time and we should be able to put in a good showing of boats from CSA. Use the Crew List if you need to find a crew. If you need help getting your boat tuned, just ask. There are several in the fleet that can help you do that job. Let s go sailing!! Dan Haile and crew, Kath photos by Mary Bartman

Just for Fun APRIL Fleet Days 2 just for fun days have been added to CSA s 2011 calendar. We re calling them Fleet Days and they are scheduled for Saturdays May 14 and August 13. Why two special days for what we try to do every spare hour during sailing season? We hope the organized fleets will take this opportunity to gather and enjoy the camaraderie of sailing along with other activities, such as: Introducing prospective crew to their boats or building the skills of existing crew Getting to know graduates of our Adult Learn to Sail program Offering rides to friends or others who cannot make our Open House date Sharing tips on boat rigging for speed, ease of use or safety Having a white elephant gear swap Practicing capsize and righting the boat Perhaps enjoying the sunset with a cookout or a takeout meal from a local restaurant This is an opportunity to show off our club to guests in a personal, fun and casual atmosphere. Unlike Open House, Fleet Days will not be advertised to the public. We encourage everyone to personally invite guests and to offer rides to guests invited by others. Every guest should be able to give the harbormaster the name of the member who invited him or her. So mark your calendar for two days of casual fun. See you at the lake! HELLO FELLOW CSAers, As the escrip coordinator for the Carlyle Junior Sailing Assn. I just received a notice that we made $93.59 in donations in I would like to promote this again this year and invite CSA members to use this free incentive.
