2 2 DECEMBER 2011 Commodore s Corner Hard to believe that we are already one month (basically) into the winter season. CSA has been closed up for the winter, again with the assistance of our great volunteer community of workers. Thanks to Jeanette Beier for bringing together the lunch for the closing work party day. Thanks to all my staff; you was there to put the place to bed for the winter and last, but not least, thanks to all the other folks that came out to assist. This year as in all the years past (and the ones to come in the future) would not have been what it has been without YOU, the membership the other folks. Although, we feel like the season may have been a bust due to all the flooding, in reality it was not, we accomplished and learned many things during the 2011 sailing season. Our community is strong and we continue to look to make it stronger. As we close out 2011, I want to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season! May 2012 put wind in your sails and waves behind your rudders. One last thought, please join us on Saturday evening January 21st 2012, for the Commodore s dinner where we will celebrate the new year with our sailing family. Please watch your s for further details on this event. Again, Happy Holidays!!! Andrea Sepanski-Levinson Evening of January 21st. Commodore s Banquet at the Nelson Complex in Edwardsville, Illinois. > sending out a registration form within the next week or so with all the final details. > Paul Hanson Banquet Co-Chair Spring 2011 view of what was. See page 4 to what is.
3 Splinters from the Board DECEMBER November s meeting was packed with end of the season dealings and looking to the winter months preparing for the 2012 season. CSA member John Sepanski sent a proposal to the board requesting a sponsorship to send him to a very important sailing symposium. Obviously with John s talent and dedication to the growth of CSA s racing programs, the board approved the measure based on determining a few final details. Commodore Sepanski will be advised to send an to work party organizers as there are a few tasks remaining to 100 percent shut the harbor down for the Winter. Those board members who were at the harbor closing work party in early November reported smaller number of volunteers than in the past, however the work went fast as the weather cooperated. Thank you to all those who worked. Long time CSA member Tom Barnett has introduced a plan to develop a Female Sailor of the Year trophy in honor of his wife Judy, who passed away earlier this year. Judy was a charter member of CSA and responsible for helping to start a number of programs at the club. The board approved funds to help design and build this perpetual trophy with Tom s assistance. The Commodore and Vice Commodore with help from a few knowledgable board members are working together to update that large list of CSA s trophies given out each year. Some of the questions raised were where are some of the missing trophies? which trophies are no longer given out? and what trophies should be retired? The answers to the questions will be revealed at the Banquet in January. There were some complaints sent to the board following a cancelation of one Sunday s racing. The board heard all the evidence and decided next years Race Committee Chairman will spend additional time making sure all weekend PRO s read and understand CSA s guidelines for canceling Sunday racing due to adverse weather conditions. The board is in discussion with a few folks interested in buying our Jr. Snipes. The final tally of CSA members who joined our Winter Storage program was 13. Thank you to all those who are participating and helping to support this program. Discussions are continuing on candidates to interview to replace outgoing Board Attorney Carson Menges. By December s meeting we should have a new board member. Incidently, congratulations to Carson and Courtney on the birth of their first child born on Monday, November 28th. Katherine (Kate) Michelle Menges came into our sailing world at 6 lbs 4 oz s at 7:57 pm. Commodore Sepanski, who was excused from the November meeting due to something called a Honeymoon (congratulations Andrea and Paul Levinson), is continuing her duties these days preparing for her big party in January. Please check details elsewhere in these Marks and please come out and celebrate at the Commodore s Banquet; we will be bringing out the old and bringing in the new so come join the celebration and excitement. Rick Bernstein Chairman of the Board Carlyle Sailing Association
4 4 DECEMBER 2011 N , W Cabin Fever by Felicia Bamer The season ended abruptly with the annual Wine/Tears Gathering on the last Sunday with all going inside with a windy windy last day. Linda D decorated with her award winning carved tongued pumpkin. The tradition is carrying on, but it looked like a catamaran group from years ago! Oh, Heinz and Karin D came to visit also! Then the Annual Wine Tour was held the following Sunday at the Blumenhoff Winery near Augusta with great food but a small crowd Taylors, Mencins, Alyeas, Franklins, Ed Verch, Linda Tatum and me -- on a very cloudy day. Cabin Fleet Officers for 2011 are Fleet Captain Joe Bartman, Secretary Shirley Firse, Treasurer Kathy Kane-Doherty, and Social Chair Linda Ditzler. Jerry DeWille kept the Hare and Hound Saturday races alive. Many have already gone south with the Taylors already in St. Petersburg. Palm Piloters Dave L and Linda D with other CSAers went to Pensacola to serve as Hobie 16 Nationals Race Committee. Joe and Mary have more company this winter with masts up on the parking lot looked strange as I left Work Party Day. Well, the Pelicans and Seagulls had already taken over the harbor. By the way, if you want to sail a remote control Soling One Meter sailboat over the winter, contact me. Join some of us CSA Cabin sailors on Sunday or Wednesday in St. Charles New Town; of course, weather permitting! Now is the time to celebrate the holiday season starting with Thanksgiving and the annual Kane-Doherty Christmas Party evening and business meeting on December 3rd. See you also at the Commodore s Dinner on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the LeClarie Room in Edwardsville, IL. May each of us be in Fair Winds in 2012!. Sail Safe! Sail Fast! Sail For Fun! Aeolus Work Party Chief Cook Jeanette Beier and Sandy Melly with Betty Struckhoff s new Landscape for OB Landing plus John Folwell s New Bridge!

One of the days was spent sailing on the lake with a great time had by all. Rides were given by Ray & Carol Serwood, Denny & Shara Taylor and Wayne & Julie Lentz. This is the hand drawn picture of that day in which Doris made for the front of her Christmas cards this year.

8 8 DECEMBER 2011 Poems and art courtesy of Eleanor Bertrand, written last year for the 7th grade Poetry Slam, submitted by Bill Bertrand. SUMMER WAVES A bright sun beams On the blue water lake. A warm wind blows, The willow trees sway. And we are Sailing, On the blue water lake. The curling waves Are shining, As we Sail away. A red sun sets On the green water lake. A cool wind blows, The rolling waves soar. And we are Sailing, On the green water lake. Cicadas cries Grow quiet, As we Sail away. A half moon shines On the black water lake. A crisp wind blows, Our little boat flies. And we are Sailing, On the black water lake. Orion s stars; Radiance, As we Sail away CHAOS ODE TO A BOAT Ode to my little sailboat, gliding along the green water. A gentle wind fills its sails as it cuts threw the rolling waves. Ode to my little sailboat That s painted blue like the Sky. And a strong, tall mast holding a white, elegant sail. Lord Saints preserve it. A storm rages. The thunder booms And the ground rumbles. The lightning strikes; Radiant sky. And a forest burns. A strong wind blows Across the land The grasses are waves. Storms sweep across the ocean. The waves are roaring lions. Hours of chaos, then silence.
