This event was an opportunity to showcase great sailing in Mid-America. My sailing world expanded this summer as Brice and I, along with the Crosby's and Franklin's, towed our boats to Door County, Wisconsin to sail the waters of Sturgeon Bay. Our first day was hampered by ill advice (there was not enough room to rig and launch a boat on the streets of Fish Creek), but after using the launch area at Peninsula State Park we embarked on a week of fun and adventure. We set sail daily to explore the small marinas and towns of Door County. We grilled at the marina, tried a few great eateries and shopped till we dropped. We were challenged by the wind and the waters but also built confidence and sailing skills, especially on one particular sail from Egg Harbor back to Fish Creek. Being a member of CSA has allowed Brice and me to build new friendships around sailing. These past two summers of traveling to sail the Great Lakes have provided some of the best memories and sailing stories of my life. Join in the fun, build friendships and take them to the next level of sailing of your liking. Whether it be racing or cruising, Carlyle Lake, the Great Lakes or beyond, sail, sail, sail. (BVI's here we come). Patti Davis CSA Commodore

2 Multihull Championship. Photo: R. Bernstein Splinters from the Board Hello Sailors, I was unable to attend the August board meeting as that thing called life and the plate that goes along with it was overflowing. Thank you to Ted Beier for running the show and here are the notes from our attorney/secretary, Mr. Mike Pitzer. 1. The Observation Building has a few issues being addressed. As some of you may have seen, the replacement double doors have arrived and our volunteer staff will get on this when they can. 2. The building also has some drywall damage from a few leaks. This has caused a little mold. Most of this work will be tackled at season s end. 3. CSA is planning a pretty big racing and social day on Saturday September 10th. The woman s Strawberry Regatta will take place, as well as a members social event. Check in this Marks for more details. 4. Stay tuned, but as of this writing we re still waiting for final confirmation on a location, date and time of the awards banquet. 5. Director Tom Wyman has put an APB out for help with the Whale. This major CSA function, multi-class regatta, that pre-dates CSA in 1971, is a great event. There is great racing and an extremely fun Saturday night party. Even if you can t race, come for the party as it s our last major all club event for the season. 6. There are a few issues going on with one of the hoists that our chief guy, Mr. Jeff Melly is taking care of. 7. Check out the trimaran on the boat parking lot. It s visiting for a couple of weeks. The actual builder is making his way around the country and here s a cool chance to check out a really exciting boat. 8. In our ever changing world, security is something often on the board s mind. Thoughts are gaining momentum that it s time we provide additional lighting and cameras to our property. Guarding all our goods is a major ordeal for our Harbor Master...it s time we get him and our club some added security. 9. Carlyle Lake turns 50 next year and we re in discussions with the State and Corps about CSA s big involvement. Obviously this is a big deal and we ll want to get as much exposure out of this as possible. Please do all that you can to come out for the Whale, it truly is a great time. 7 Champion of Champions Regatta Light Air Challenge for Racers Scott Stevenson, representing the Catamaran fleet, is CSA s 2016 Champion of Champions. Competing against four other fleet champions, including 2015 winner Jeff Melly, representing the Scow fleet, Stevenson put together very consistent finishes in the five race series with two first, two seconds and a third to win the regatta. The racing was competed in Flying Scots, without spinnakers, around a triangle course, in a round robin fashion, meaning that each competitor sailed in a different boat each race. The other fleet champions competing were Eric Sutton representing the Flying Scott Fleet, John Folwell representing the Lighting fleet and Mark Paoli representing the San Juan Fleet. The first race was won by Sutton, who had a good start in the light and shifty wind and won start to finish. Race two was won by Follwell who recovered from a poor start, found some nice air on the right side as everybody else went left, and nobody could catch him. Sutton won the third race again having a good start and sailing well in the shifty wind. The last two races were won by Stevenson with very close racing, with luffing matches on the reaches, and smart sailing by all on the shifting air on the windward legs. Final Results: 1 st Scott Stevenson, Cat fleet 9 points 2 nd Jeff Melly, Scow fleet 12 points 3 rd Eric Sutton, Scot fleet 13 points 4 th John Folwell, Lighting fleet 17 points 5 th Mark Paoli, San Juan fleet 24 points September 2016 Page 7 Many thanks to the Flying Scot fleet members who so generously donate their boats for use in this regatta. Also thanks to PRO Dave Crosby and his crew who all did an excellent job of keeping up with the course changes in the light and shifty winds and getting all five races completed! Race photos are by Linda Vitt. Thank you Linda! Howard Harris Champion of Champions Chairman

8 By Bronson Bowling and Shirley Bild The Traveling brigade has been rolling on the miles and miles. The summer travel series started at the 111 th Annual Ephraim Regatta in upper Door County Wisconsin. Team Wreckless made the 10 hour trip up country to the longest running consecutive regatta. The conclusion of the 1904 world s fair was the last time there was not a regatta in Ephraim. The hospitality and the weather could not have been better. Thirty Seven Flying Scot sailboats reported to the race course on Saturday. Over the entire event, 4 races were sailed, but there were 7 general recalls and 1 abandoned race. We certainly got our fill of friends, parties and lie telling over bratwursts and ice cream. The next stop on the list was the Midwest District Championship hosted by the Delevan Yacht Club on Delevan Lake in, of course, Delevan, Wisconsin. Twenty-four flying scots were on hand from as far north as Medicine Lake, Minnesota, and Ephriam while Fleet 83 was well represented with 3 boats. After 3 races on Saturday, the close racing resulted in a 4 way tie for 1 st place, and a 2 way tie for the subsequent 2 nd place (read: 5 th and 6 th Place). Sunday didn t produce enough wind to hold any more races so tie breakers were religiously employed. The Champion of Champions event was held Saturday August 27. Howard Harris went to great lengths to conduct this event as a true test of skill in a one design round robin format, and the Flying Scot Fleet was there to support the event. Our own Eric Sutton sailed for our fleet as the winner of last years overall club races, and competed against the best CSA has to offer. Eric got the Bronze and all the results can be seen in Howard Harris article on page 7. Check your calendars for other events coming up. Notices for the cancellation of the Match Racing Invitational are currently circulating. However, we re looking forward to the WOW (Women on the Water) Strawberry Regatta and the Whale of a Sail. Please register your boats early to give organizers a head count. September July 2016 Page 88 On the home front Shirley Bild gives the following update: In late July, we had a 100 degree day mini mega with lots of very short races. The heat on the parking lot afterwards was oppressive! The following weekend a couple of Scots went sailing on Saturday, as the Sunday predictions were for hot and no wind. The following week I was out of town visiting grandkids. Several Scots sailed the pursuit race that Sunday. Last weekend was rainy all day Sunday. I don't think there were races that day. We stayed home, due to the weather. Yesterday was great weather with a high in the upper 70s. Winds were shifty and gusty with 8 Scots on the line. The course was crowded with more than the usual number of CSA boats and a multitude of visiting catamarans preparing for the Multihull Nationals Regatta at CSA. In the spectator section on the bluff were Jane Sepanski, who rode out to the lake with Andrea and husband. Peg Woodworth was also watching while recovering from a broken ankle, which was in a boot. Jim and Betty came in early from racing with a tiller extension problem, joining the spectators. Carol Clark was also there. We hope that the pleasant fall weather will bring out more folks for the spectator section. Those who raced were tired after three long races and a start/finish line on the far side of the lake. We got a second and a third place, Eric got first places, I believe Bill was second. Not sure of the finish order in the last race. In that race the two Puffin boats decided they wanted to kiss each other just before the finish of that race, while a cat zoomed in demanding room between them and the committee boat. We're expecting a baby Puffin to appear by next week. We ll be back for September and October racing. 10 Great Week of Competitive Sailing During 2016 US Multihull Championship The week of August 22 through August 25 saw the 2016 US Multihull Championship and the 2016 Hobie 17 North American Championship competitions come to CSA. The sailors, who came from as far away as British Columbia, and who also came from all over the US, started arriving a week beforehand. Most people arrived on the Saturday or Sunday before the events. If you raced in the Sunday club races, you saw more than 20 catamarans on the starting line for some practice/tune-up racing. The finish in the 2 nd afternoon race saw a herd of 10 or more boats finishing in such a tight bunch that scoring was a real challenge. We had 33 cats registered for the Nationals. The regatta started on Monday with winds of 3 gusting to minus 2. Ashley Enders, regatta chair, scared up a race on some standup Hobie Eclipse boards powered by a stair-stepper like device. The racers also sampled some of the many cases of Kraftig beer donated by William K. Busch Brewing Company. However no sailing occurred that day. Tuesday came with winds of 8-10, and four races were sailed. At last a regatta was in the bag and Ashley could breathe. Wednesday brought four more races, with the first 2 races sailed in winds of with gusts in the high 20s (all winds speeds in mph). There were some capsizes, and a few near misses, and some challenging conditions, but no serious issues or boat damage. CSA s own Dave Leimbach did a little bit of Carlyle Lake-bottom Mud Mining in the big blow, but his crew got right back on the boat and sailed out the regatta. Rick Bernstein, Regatta Videographer, got a great video of a Hobie 17 sailor practicing his ballerina AND bodysurfing moves after rounding the weather mark. Head on over to the regatta Facebook pages to see the video. Thursday came with enough wind for one decent race and one light and getting lighter race. The first race saw CSA s own Jim Disano attempting to sail over a 3 foot high gate mark. He didn t make it. But he is now engaged to the mark and expecting baby marks in nine months. Thursday evening, there was a nice barbeque and some good music by Rosewood Band. They had a very nice set of what Ashley would call the Past Generations Mix. That was perfect for many of the sailors of a certain age that were there. September 2016 Page 10 Friday turned out to be a repeat of Monday. Matt Bounds, PRO extraordinaire, blew the final horn at 11am on Friday and the racers all got their boats packed up and ready to go. An awards ceremony was held at Bretz Wildlife. A great buffet dinner was followed by trophies. Ken Marshack and Valerie Pioszak were crowned the 2016 Alter Trophy winners and Phil Collins was named the 2016 Hobie 17 North American Champion. Liz Walker from US Sailing had nothing but nice things to say about the fine facilities and people at CSA. Those feelings were echoed by many of the sailors who attended the regatta. The CSA membership should be proud of our facility the people who volunteer to organize and put on such events. Ashley Enders would like to give a big thank you to the CSA Board for all of their generous and helpful support, all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly all week to help feed and care for the racers, the race committee volunteers, and to Bob the busy beaver Winston who was constantly running around making sure coolers were iced and stocked, tables got moved when needed and everything was in place where it needed to be. It takes a village for a 28 year-old who has only been sailing 5 years to pull off two national events simultaneously (thank you for the English lesson Dan Haile). The CSA family came through with flying colors to help make this event a huge success and great memory for the racers who came to compete. Jim Disano Photo by Ashley Enders

12 Carlyle Sailing Association Hazlet Park Road Carlyle, IL September 2016 Page 12 Do You Know the U.S. sailed away with one medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics? There were 10 classes run at the Olympics, and Caleb Paine, of San Diego, earned a bronze medal in the Finn class. Paine sailed a strong series and won the doublepoints medal race. This was the first Olympic sailing medal won by the U.S. since Stu McNay, Dave Hughes, Annie Haeger and Briana Provancha narrowly missed podium positions in the Men and Women 470 Classes. Below is a short summary of the countries earning medals.
