One item is possibly changing to an all afternoon schedule with no morning races all year. Another is cutting race days. It will be held at the Richmond Heights Community Center near the intersection of 40 and Hanley. We will be discussing many things at this meeting. 2 Page 2 CSA Annual Meeting! Day sailors, racers, casual members, family members crew, Jr. sailors, social members, new and old members ALL MEMBERS - are personally invited and encouraged to attend the 2013 annual meeting Thursday November 7 at the Richmond Heights Rec Center at 8001 Dale Ave., just east of Hanley Road. The meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. What s on the agenda? 1. A fee increase will be discussed as those attending this meeting in prior years requested small, incremental increases rather than large increases. 2. New proposed race program ideas will be discussed including the pursuit program. Do you want more races? Less races? Three races each day? You have a voice, and we want to hear what you want to do on the water. 3. CSA also has very nice social and casual sailing/racing programs for the more casual day sailors. Do these suit your fancy, or would you rather have other activities. You have a voice, so make your suggestions heard. 4. Young members and Jr. sailors, you are the future of CSA and we need you. At this meeting you ll also have a voice. What are your wants and desires for programs to change, adjust, grow or be eliminated. 5. All members; you discuss ideas and events through the summer. Come and speak up. CSA s Board of Directors and Flag Officers love to hear your thoughts. We want to grow this club as our members envision it, and this is the meeting to be heard and have your thoughts discussed. Please, plan on coming to the annual meeting November 7th and celebrate our purpose to provide the best sailing product in the area, for a reasonable price, with an emphasis on our members volunteering to run the show, propose programs and plans, and grow our club year after year. 3 Page 3 Cabin Fever by Linda Ditzler Photos by Greg Franklin The Cabin Fleet hosted the Oktoberfest Saturday the 26th. It was a fun night with brats, beer, lots of cabbage, and all the trimmings including a large German Flag. The event Nice pumpkins guys. was open to all CSA members. We had 32 folks present with representation from the Flying Scot, Lightning, and Cat Fleets. It was cold and rainy so we had a faux bonfire (as opposed to fall bonfire) made with two pumpkins supporting Patty Davis fiddling around. a glow stick. We all gathered around our faux fire for some intro time and a couple of songs accompanied by Patti Davis on her fiddle. All in all, it was a cozy, fun evening in the OB with good food and great fellowship.

5 Page 5 Lightning Flashes It seemed like a short season of sailing in Between a late CSA opening, due to spring flooding, weddings, race committee, and weather conditions, the racing season seemed really short. On October 27, 2013, this is all that could be seen on Lightning row, and Lightning Hill. I'm sure you'll be impressed. Pictured are Linda Fasterling and Michael Reed after packing up the BS for the 2013 season. Michael Reed has a challenge with anybody that contacts him: His wager is that there will be no delay of the 2014 racing season due to flooding. Once the work was done in packing up the yachts, studying for the Holiday season ensued. We find it important to start training immediately for our off-season by studying some of the more important literary works ever created. Here we see fleet Commodore Carson Menges proctoring some young sailors on "enlightning Hill". In another area of "enlightning Hill" the elders consult, and discuss beverage recipes and quality. The Lightning Fleet wishes you a loving, memorable, knowledgeable and safe off-season. See you next year!!!! 6 Page 6 WOW-Women On the Water By Linda Ditzler I am doing a Women's Sailing 101 at the Sail and Paddle store, 3780 Rider Trail South in Earth City, on Nov 16th. It should be fun. It is not necessarily instruction but more of why not sail? The official title is How Gals Get on the Water and is an introductory seminar to answer questions and concerns about how to get started sailing. Sail and Paddle is hosting one-hour seminars each Saturday at 10:30 a.m. from November 2 through December 14. The cost is $5.00 per person. Other seminar topics include kayak maintenance, fiberglass repair and family fun on the water. For more details check out this link CYSS Always Accepts Donations CYSS (Carlyle Youth Sailing School) is our Carlyle Lake 501C3 whose mission is to provide sailing for our youth. Accepting cash/check donations (tax deductible) is Treasurer Ted Beier. Shirley Allen has sold eight (8) donated boats in the past two years. We still accept donations of some boats. CYSS has assisted the CSA Junior Program with grants for juniors and adults for training, purchasing Optimists, Open Bics, Laser Radial Sails and Masts, Snipes, sails and covers through the past few years. 8 Carlyle Sailing Association Hazlet Park Road Carlyle, IL Page 8 Do You Know that the HMS Bounty replica sank in the Atlantic Ocean during Hurricane Sandy October 29, 2012? The 180-foot three-masted ship was built for the 1962 movie remake Mutiny on the Bounty starring Marlon Brando, and appeared in the 2006 movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man s Chest. At one point the ship was owned by America s Cup winner Ted Turner who acquired it in The ship foundered about 90 miles off the coast of North Carolina in 18-foot seas. Taking on water, the engines and generators eventually quit making it impossible to run the pumps to dewater. When the crew abandoned ship there were 10-feet of water in the hull. Fourteen crew members were rescued by the USCG, however Captain Robin Walbridge and deckhand Claudene Christian perished at sea.
