Please view this special edition of the Marks of the Course, our monthly newsletter, as your formal invitation to join the CSA. Thus, I have written this letter in the style of an invitation. If you have any questions about the CSA, please do not hesitate to contact me. What: The CSA is a sailing and social organization. With a well-protected harbor, 400 yards of floating docks, 3 electric hoists and extensive parking for boats, CSA is nationally recognized as a premier venue for small boat sailing. The facilities also include a large covered pavilion, ample grounds for picnicking, an observation building, restrooms and shower facilities. The CSA has room for over 300 boats. Notwithstanding our world-class facilities, the CSA is surprisingly affordable, with social ( Friend ) membership starting as low as $50 per year. Boat owners can defray the modest membership fees by volunteering. Throughout the year, the CSA provides fun programs and events every weekend. In addition to our competitive one-design racing program, we have social events and parties, regattas, junior and adult sailing classes, fun races and other programs. Our busy calendar builds a sense of community and camaraderie amongst our members. Moreover, the CSA has a sailboat rental program. Qualified skippers can rent boats for a couple hours or an entire week. Associate members can rent boats at a discount. Finally, the CSA loves all water sports. The CSA has a storage program just for kayaks, windsurfers, kite boards and other small watercraft. I look forward to introducing Henry Theodore Preston to the sport of sailing, even though he probably will not get much time at the tiller for the foreseeable future. When: The CSA is open for business from May through October, but we host numerous events, including a formal banquet, throughout the offseason.

M a y 1, CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE Splinters From the Board At our May Board of Directors meeting, we welcomed new board member, Mr. Joe Bartman. Commodore Preston reported we are down about 15 boats compared to last year at the same time. The exciting news is our new sailboat rental program is about to launch. We ve secured a Hobie Wave to start the program which should be ready to go in June. We re heavily into the process of making sure all is insured properly, that our rental boats are licensed correctly and basically doting our i s and crossing our t s carefully. Keep an eye on your s for information to pass along to all you know. Incidentally, this program will also include Kayaks and there will a savings to CSA members. We had a pretty extensive conversation about what some see as the growth of fishing on the property. I have seen it as well as many on the board. The Corps and State Park have given us permission to deny these sportsmen during sailing operations, which we all contend is any time sailboats are moving in and out of the harbor. Some see it differently. The sign at the harbor mouth obviously doesn t work and the Park has given us permission to post more signage which we re looking into doing. The handbook has been revised for this season so please go to CSA s website to get yourself up to speed. A year after the passing of CSA member Ford Miller, his family with the help of Cal Guthrie sold Ford s boat and the proceeds have been donated to our Junior Foundation, CYSS. Thank you Ford!!! June is going to be a great month at CSA: Adult Sail Seminar, Junior Sail Camp, Flying Scot Jr and Senior North American Championships and the month ends with our very popular Open House and Luau. Please check out the stories herein as this would be a great month to bring those friends or family members who ve you ve always wanted to show this great place called Carlyle Sailing Association. Rick Bernstein Chairman of the Board!! 2

May 1, 2012 CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE Lightning Flashes Come one, come all! The Lightning Fleet and CSA are sponsoring a happy hour this Sunday, June 3rd following the conclusion of the races that day. All CSA members are invited and we hope to see everyone there! We've planned it around a Jamaican theme and promise a lively get-together with music, beer, rum punch, and food -- featuring the amazing culinary skills of fellow fleet member, Susan Reed. It will be a party you won't want to miss! So please plan to stop by the hill after the races on Sunday. It will be a great opportunity to mingle with members from the other fleets and enjoy the great weather and great company. Also - a reminder to the Lightning Fleet that we have Race Committee duties on Sunday, June 24th. We still need volunteers for this date, so if you're available to help out, please contact the fleet captain, Carson Menges, to let him know. The season has had a great start this year -- there have been two weekends of club races with a number of Lightnings on the start line, and also a few Lightnings participated in the racing clinic held on Sunday, May 20th. We look forward to seeing everyone in the Lightning Fleet out at the lake this Sunday for races and for the Fleet Party! CSA Championship of Champions Regatta CSA Champions will be competing for the CSA Championship of Champions Regatta on Saturday, July 29, 2012 on Flying Scots. This regatta has seen some of the best and brightest CSA has to offer race to be the best-of-the-best from CSA. Past Champions are a who s who of racing and many of these champions have gone on to race nationally and internationally. Invitations are sent out to competitors who have been Fleet Champions in 2010 and 201 and other champions. If you believe you should compete in our CSA Championship regatta or you recommend that someone should compete based on their competitive accomplishments in 2010 and 2011, please contact Felicia Bamer at fbamer@sbcglobal.net or and state accomplishments.!! 3

M a y 1, CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE Great Scot Weekend The Flying Scot fleet consolidated its own Egyptian Cup into the LCR this past weekend.the result was some great racing under almost ideal conditions albeit hot ones. Saturday the wind was 9-15 and Sunday it started out at 10 and down a bit from that high for the second race. It was the first time in a long time that all five races of a Regatta I attended were actually sailed. The Scot Fleet had it's own division of eight boats with strong competition and close racing. I think the Scots were the largest fleet in the LCR (there were a lot of 470s from out of nowhere). The attendance was really strong from our out of town friends who regularly support Scot racing. Frank and Maryanne Gerry came from Lake Delevan Wisconsin with their fast boat Helga and they finished second overall. Clinton Lake was well represented with the semi-pro team of Ben Williams and Don Johnson leading the way and taking first place in the Scots and the Egyptian Cup. Rod and Eric Bussell are newcomers from Clinton and we expect to see more of them. Eric did a very nice job of competing, finishing fourth overall. Five other boats rounded out the field with a special appearance by Nick Chapekis and his daughter Sara. She was sailing in her first races and looked like a crew ringer. She did a great job and talked like an experienced sailor. Nick is a two year Leukemia survivor who has racing experience in the collegiate ranks and also in the Mallory Cup. Nick contacted the Scot fleet a month ago looking for a boat and Jim Williams was kind enough to lend him a Scot (Bill Dummitt offered too.) Of course Bill Clark, the ever present racer now that he is retired, raced hard and fast with his crew Thomas Kraft and smiling Stephanie. Thomas is picking up his own Scot this weekend and Bill will be looking for new crew. Carol Clark helped out with the food for the cocktail hour and her sporty new hat was spot on for sailing. Our Commodore Rob Preston was in the boat of Bill Vogler, finishing third and bringing up the back of the fleet was yours truly with his daughter Jenny who endured another series of last place finishes. It has to get better right? And no Regatta would be official without Felicia Bamer who was not only the co-chair for the Leukemia Cup but also a competitor racing with crew Linda Tatum and Donna Collins. Plus, she handled the scoring duties on her computer, not to mention her famous shrimp dish which she prepared a day early on Friday night. And, she was the fourth highest fund raiser!! Kudos also to our own Len Sisul who reported for duty. Len's wife Rita is also a Lymphoma survivor and Len was an active auction participant winning a nice picture in the auction. He also donated a wooden ship's wheel which was Bob Levin's. He had bought it at last year's LCR auction. The Scots are just weeks away from their national North American Championship Regatta which is being held this year at CSA from June th. Jim Harris is our Regatta chair and he has prepared an outstanding Regatta with Ted Beier as PRO. More than 50 Flying Scots will race in this event. Come out and enjoy the Scots. Mike Pitzer!! 5

M a y 1, CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE Gateway Melges 24 Spring Regatta Way back in July or August 2007 we had a no wind day up on the hill and the M24 fleet guys started talking big talk about hosting a class regatta here at CSA. All of us had traveled to other venues over the years, and we knew that few clubs have the amenities that CSA has to offer including a great facility, close race course, professional race management, and a supportive community. We started talking about hosting the worlds, which may happen someday, but ended up inventing a spring regional invitational regatta. Spring seemed to be the best time of year, since the fall was already full of other events and we thought that the northern teams would come south for a regatta before their seasons started on the great lakes. Plus the breeze is usually up in the spring. We had a fleet meeting, talked to the other Midwest District fleets, advertised at the winter regattas, and collected a little seed money to get started. We all love the water, but mother nature gave us water in abundance the spring of It started raining and didn t stop. Water came down the Kaskaskia river, all the Carlyle creeks and tributaries, and then overflowed the lake. The water was up to the hoist motors on regatta weekend, and we had to cancel the inaugural event! Our discouragement was temporary, and the second annual inaugural Gateway Melges 24 Spring Regatta went into the record books May 2-3, Our hill prediction of reliable spring breezes conditions was a little off, though. Saturday gave us a light and unstable northerly, but Sunday came through with good racing conditions in a 10 knot south easterly. 12 boats were on the line, and Mike Dow (Traverse City, MI) took home the gold, with Dan Moriarty taking second in the inaugural regatta. In 2010, the Melges 24 Midwest District recognized the Gateway regatta as a scored event in the Midwest series, and ten boats sailed the regatta. The wind blew strong out of the northwest as the teams were setting up their boats on Friday, but everyone was left guessing on Saturday as Carlyle was squeezed between a passing cold front to the southeast and a trough to the northwest. Most guesses were right at some point in the weekend, with light breezes coming from all directions. Big shifts were the norm, and there was a high premium on staying in the pressure. Augi Hernandex (Chicago) took away the honors turned into another heartbreak; cancel the regatta once again due to flooding. The 2012 regatta results were swept by local CSA boats (actually all seven boats were local, but hey). John Woodworth s race committee did a great job in challenging light wind conditions and got five races in. Rick Bernstein s VCubed had blistering speed all weekend and took the regatta win handily. Congratulations to the VCubed team on some great sailing! We are looking forward to next year already and the new tradition of the Gateway Regatta. Tom Wyman Fleet Captain!! 6

M a y 1, CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE The Hare and Hound Race Allen Branch Coles Creek C S A CSA H & H Start and Finish Line The race course will start directly in front of the CSA Pavilion. From the starting line you sail to the Coles Creek mark (Red Line) and make a port rounding. From the Coles Creek mark you proceed to the Allen Branch (Blue Line) mark make a port rounding then return to the Coles Creek mark (Orange Line). You make a port rounding of the Coles Creek mark (Green Line) and return to the cabin fleet start finish line. See the drawing of the course above. The race dates: May 19 June 9 July 21 August 18 September CSA Hare & Hound Racing What could be more fun than sailing around the lake with friends and family doing a laid back race! All boats at CSA are welcome. If you haven t done it before, give it a try. It s simple and fun. If you have done some in the past I encourage you to continue. It s all about being on the water, having fun and enjoying friends. The proposed race course would remain the same for the entire 2012 season. The starts would be staggered so the slowest boats, based on their PHRF number, would start first thus eliminating a crowded starting line. Scoring would be simple because a yacht s finishing position would depend solely on when she crossed the finish line in relation to the other competitors. At 4:00 the results will be announced at the pavilion where all can sit and enjoy complementary beer and soda while tall tales are told of the days adventures. Sail 3 of the 5 and you qualify for a H&H excellence award at the Commodores banquet! The Skippers Meeting is at 10:00 AM (required) The boat with the highest PHRF number will start at 11:00 PM. We will try to score 4 divisions, Low/high PHRF; One Design & Cats Questions, contact Jerry DeWille at jkdewille@sbcglobal.net!! 7

BOB LEVIN 2012 LEUKEMIA CUP REGATTA! SUCCESS! Kyle and Jacob Bernstein Recipients of the Bob Levin Corinthian Award whose deed of gift states participants of the annual Leukemia Cup Regatta will nominate annual reward receiver. The CSA Cabin Fleet donated the Award in 2011 whose ship was constructed by prior CSA member Art Short. Why? They did not race. Kyle and Jacob came with a smile. They started to work immediately carrying boxes and boxes, setting up tee shirt sales and dry erase boards, hung sailing instructions on Official Bulletin Board, played with rubber band ball, hung banners, carried more stuff, gophered, set up water, soda with ice, rode scooter I wanted to ride, gophered, sold tee shirts oh that is just Friday. Saturday still smiling carried more boxes, carried more ice, soda, water to the pavilion, did lunch duty, carried auction items (Silent and Live) to pavilion, sold Chuck-A-Ducks. I bet they did trash! Did they sleep! Sunday: put out trophies, carried tee shirts, dealt with auction items, carried money, Smiled! Where is the photo with the 2011 first winner to me little Ricky to them DAD! I bet they then got to do trash again! They were smiling when they met me at the OB later in the afternoon for me to give them cereal for Junior Sail Camp. The Bob Levin Corinthian Award is on display on top of one my trophy cases in the OB Rick Bernstein 2012 Kyle & Jacob Bernstein ME FGB ---Being on the LCR Executive Committee these past years, I must also share some of my thoughts. Cancer! Leukemia! In 1971, in 1981,, I was brought again to tears a number of times. To say Hi! to Agnes before the Welcoming Ceremony, to see the RED BOAT on the Cabin course while I was racing! Yes, again, Agnes and Carol with Skipper Jerry DeWille and his son Chris won the Cabin JAM class. HIGHLIGHTS -- Here are some highlights worthy of highlighting: 1. When we arrived, we first saw the Beer Truck along with soda that Doug Draper from CYC had donated again. He has donated all 12 years of the regatta beer/soda. 2. Our friends at Carlyle Yacht Club ran an incredible kick-off party Friday night thanks to the coordination of Bob and Susan Snyder (the preparer). 3. As Rick said the forecast early in the week was for upper 90 s and almost no wind. Our winds were 6 to 15 mph, and Cabin and One Design courses completed 5 races in wonderful weather. 4. The Chuck-A-Duck had one winner. To show how incredibly unselfish sailors are, the winner donated their winning share back to the regatta; total raised, $ The live auction Saturday night raised $1, We sold 110 of 144 LCR shirts all thanks to the passionate work of Kyle and Jacob. 7. The silent auction raised $ Once again we offered free breakfast Saturday and Sunday to all, donated by the Cabin fleets and Cat fleets at CSA. Thank you to everyone who purchased, prepared fruit, woke up super early, and who cleaned up. 9. Thank you everyone who worked on race committee. Ted Beier and Garin Miller were the PROs. 10. A month ago Rick and I received an from a Nick Chapekis (Wildwood resident) that he was a two (2) year Leukemia Survivor and wanted to introduce his 17 year old daughter Sarah to sailing. Collegiately, he had raced on east coast and Lake Michigan, the Mallory Cup and travelled to J-22 National Championships. He chose through our web site to borrow a Flying Scot. 10. Rick Bernstein chaired his 12 th year. I recall the night Rick brought the proposal to the CSA Board of Directors. I could not believe there was opposition to hosting it. This year Rick took on the task of being Treasurer of the event when we decided as the LCR Committee we should be a third party event we run ourselves.

11. Bob Snyder and Tom Aquino represented CYC. Thor Schaette represented BYC but our meetings were too far away. Rey Neville from BYC designed the program again. Bonnie DiMercurio (TYC) coordinated ads prior to a special year wedding anniversary celebration in Mexico. 12. Agnes and Carol Levin were on hand the entire weekend. The two raced with Jerry DeWille on the old Levin boat, and won their division. Thank you Agnes and Carol for your very generous donation to the trophy budget for the regatta. 13. Congratulations to Dave & Barb Huhn Ecstasy, Marcus Raichle V3, Brian Hacker Martha J, Felicia Bamer Flying Scot 5638, David Krause (from Wisconsin and former CYC racer) and Jerry DeWille Mean Machine for being the top 6 fund raisers. 14. This year s regatta raised just over $30,000. Each and every year it is said, but this regatta would not be as nationally successful and renowned if it weren t for the donors, sponsors, volunteers and participants. Thank you to every single one of you who at the most donated money, and at the least, thought about the regatta and wished us all well. It s only through certainty can we succeed and work awards a cure. Felicia Bamer

CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE

CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE SAILING 101, BY AMY NARISHKIN, OWNER ST. LOUIS SAIL & PADDLE So often I hear being in the sailboat business, I ve always wanted to learn to sail but don t know how to get started. The funny thing is that I hear this from people of all ages, teens, moms, mid-lifers, and retirees. I grew up deep sea fishing and water skiing with my family. It was not until I met Cyril (my husband and business partner) that I started to sail. After almost 25 years of sailing with him, I find the hum of an engine can be annoying. Now I prefer the sound of water lapping on the boat and watching for the signs of wind and weather. Sailing gets me back to nature. To give you an idea of the different ways people learn to sail, I asked Cyril and a few friends how they got started and how they would recommend others start sailing. The first person I asked how he got started sailing was one of our salesman, Cliff. Cliff explained, I was in the liquor business. One afternoon, instead of having a drinking lunch, the rep took me sailing at Lake Carlyle in Illinois. It was on an O Day 23, just like one of the boats we have here on consignment. It was a beautiful day. I watched him sail for a while. He showed me what to do. Then I took the helm and I wouldn t give it back, that is, until we reached the dock. I asked Cliff how he would suggest others get started sailing. He recommended that you learn how to sail with a friend or take sailing lessons. (Cliff is now a sailing instructor himself!) He went on to say, Then buy a boat and get your feet wet. I asked how do you find the right boat? Cliff suggested, Walk the docks at the marina and ask folks what they would suggest. You need to find a boat that fits you. This is what I specialize in, finding the right boat for the right person. Some of things you have to consider are: who you ll be sailing with, how often, where you ll be sailing, and whether you want to take it for the day or the weekend. After talking with Cliff, I asked Cyril to describe how he started sailing. When I was 10 years old, we moved to a house on a lake in Holland. My dad bought an old clunker, a daysailer called a Zeff. For the first time, I had that awesome sense of independence! Then I discovered what it felt like to go fast and that was even better! When I was 13, I used my allowance to buy an OK racing dinghy that was in major disrepair! I spent about a year restoring it and then started racing it. As I grew bigger and stronger, I could take it out in heavier winds and really push it. Then in high school, my best friend was allowed to buy a sailboat for his bar mitzvah. He got a Flying Dutchman. I convinced my parents to let him keep the boat in our yard. The two of us decided that we would only sail when the wind was howling and there was really bad weather. cont,

My dad bought a Catalina 22 and that became our family boat. My friends and I would take the Catalina and go through the locks and travel all around Holland. Because Cyril started sailing as a child, I asked him how he would suggest someone get started as an adult. If you want to sail as a family, get a little cabin boat like we did. That way the kids can be in the cabin and play and have a potty and the parents can sail. Leave the boat at the marina for a great little weekend get-away. If you want to race and go fast, you can get a mono hull or catamaran sailboat and join one of the area sailing associations and race with them. If you do not know how to sail at all, Cyril suggests taking a sailing class like the one the American Sailing Association offers. ASA 101 and 103 will teach you the basics as well as navigation strategies. After talking with Cyril, I asked friends of ours, Mary Ellen and Don Morrison how they got started sailing. Don explained that he taught himself to sail a little bit at 19 years old when he was a canoeing instructor at camp. However, he really learned to sail in his early 30 s with Mary Ellen when they had two small children. For a day, they borrowed an 8 foot Super Porpoise. They loved it so much that two days later they found and bought a 14 foot O Day. At the time, they were living in St. Joseph, Michigan and are proud to say they are self-taught sailors. They now keep their 37 foot Endeavour at Sioux Harbor in Missouri on the Mississippi River. Don and Mary Ellen have made good friends at Sioux Harbor over the years, friends with whom they cruise. In fact, another couple, that are good friends, bought their sailboat first and fooled around with it until they learned to control it. They sail out of Sioux Harbor as well. Buying a boat first is not unusual. In fact, two gentlemen (mid-lifers) came into the Shop last Saturday asking us how they could learn to sail. They had just bought an old boat, a fixerupper, that would need a couple of months of work before she would be sea-worthy. They asked me about sailing lessons while they worked on their boat. I gave them our lesson schedule and they signed up for a weekend-long ASA 101 course. If you re ready for a new or used boat, we can help you find the right boat at the right price. If you want to just get your feet wet and crew on someone else s boat, we can hook you up with local sailing associations. If you re ready to take a class and learn from a professional with the American Sailing Association, will give you a class schedule with a couple of local sail instructors. No matter how, we recommend that you learn with a friend, spouse, or family member. Learning is so much more fun and effective when you do it together. And at every age and season of life, sailing is a wonderful way to escape and connect with nature. Amy Narishkin St. Louis Sail & Paddle 13

Commodore cont... Where: The CSA is located in Eldon Hazlet State Park on Lake Carlyle, which is about 55 miles east of St. Louis. Aside from Lake Michigan, Carlyle Lake is the largest body of water in Illinois covering more than a 26,000 acres. The Park, which includes many amenities, is perfect for hiking, paddling and viewing wildlife. Who: The CSA is comprised of about 200 fun-loving families from Missouri and Illinois. As a member-run organization, our members are involved in every aspect of the CSA, from dock repair, to race administration, to financial accounting. Many of our members have been sailing at the CSA since they were children. Why: Whether you re looking to get on the water in a sailboat for the first, or just the first time in a long time, the CSA is ideal. There is no better way to spend an afternoon than sailing. Sailing at the CSA is less complicated and less expensive than you might imagine, especially since the CSA offers sailing classes and various programs for novices and non-boat owners. Our members are family-oriented, friendly, and enthusiastic about sharing their love for the sport of sailing. We hope to see you at the CSA this summer. Yours with great respect and esteem, Robb Preston, Commodore *** Do you shop at Schnucks Supermarket? 16 June 1, 2012 CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE` CSA Open House A Great Time to Meet the Public on a Sailboat Our Open House at CSA is our best opportunity to show our facility, and the great pleasure of sailing, to the public. It is scheduled each year on the same day as our Luau and the Carlyle Lake fireworks to provide a day and evening of sailing and social adventure. This event provides opportunities for all. For our visitors there is the chance to be introduced to our facility in Hazlet Park, take rides on different types of sailboats to determine which they like best, and hopefully then to consider joining CSA to continue the fun for a lifetime. For our CSA members the event is an opportunity to meet new people and show them the fun of sailing, demonstrate their boat, and perhaps, find new crew for the future. This year CSA will introduce a new class of membership. This will be a Kayak Associate, which will admit members whose primary boat is a kayak. At open house we will have St. Louis Sail and Paddle on site to demonstrate kayaks for those who may be interested in pursuing such a membership. For the evening we hope many of our visitors will have made reservations for the Luau. They will join CSA members for an evening of fine food and drink. Later in the evening we will enjoy the Carlyle Lake fireworks. CSA is a premier location to watch the fireworks. Link: VolunteerForOpenHouse CSA MARKS OF THE COURSE 714 Yale Ave St. Louis, MO 63119
